Fantasy Eliteserien – Gameweek 3 Preview

After a five month long winter break the new season of Norwegian’s top flight football kicked off with a bang with two Gameweeks within a few days.

With Gameweek 3 starting on Saturday there is little respite for the clubs, and more importantly, us Fantasy managers. Gameweek 2 saw a lot of frustration as key assets were either benched or taken off early with the tight schedule in mind.

FFScout League Standings

The FFS community has shown an overwhelming interest for this fringe league, with 476 already having entered the FFScout main league (3769-1041).

On top with 135 points we find Norwegian Red (Oieiao) – perhaps fittingly – an Englishman.

In the FFScout  H2H league 16 managers have won both their matchups, with Ned Ryerson and Riski Virksomhet being joint top thanks to their superior points tally. Ned Ryerson features again on top of Phil Dagger’s Last Man Standing.

Stock Check

Ahead of looking at the risers and fallers from the two Gameweeks so far it is worth checking out Goktugerce‘s excellent statistical review of the first two Gameweeks, looking at team statistics, average positions and expected goals & assists. Meanwhile, Niemi took an in depth look at the good and bad players so far in every position.

Rising

Vegar Hedenstad (6.5) – Two clean sheets and an assist. On some set pieces.

Mike Jensen (10.5) – Two assists. Easy on the eye, which means he will be a favourite of ‘the man in the stand’. Already has 4 bonus points.

Milan Jevtovic (7.6) – A goal and an assist. A possible injury to Elbasan Rashani means Jevtovic could be nailed on going forward.

Nicklas Bendtner (12.5) – Two goals. The Dane is yet to find the groove but nonetheless has managed to find the back of the net in both games. Will score a lot of goals purely because of the sheer amount of chances Rosenborg create every game.

Sigurd Rosted (5.6) – Two goals. Not only is he a massive threat from set pieces, Sarpsborg play 4 out of their next 6 fixtures at home. Last season they kept an impressive 9 clean sheets in 15 games at home.

Patrick Mortensen (6.6) – Two goals and an assist. Sarpsborg have scored the joint most goals so far and the fixtures are favourable.

Gilbert Koomson (7.5) – Dubbed ’Siggy of Eliteserien’ by some of the FFS posters, Koomson showed some of his potential by scoring a penalty in GW2. The top assister from last season is yet to assist this campaign but that looks like a matter of time.

Bendik Bye (5.5) – Two goals and an assist. After a potential season ending injury for strike parter Ole Sveen, Bye should have done enough to nail down a permanent starting place.

Ifeanyi Matthew (6.1) – A goal and an assist. 4 bonus points already, including full points in a game his team lost.

Ibrahim Shuaibu (5.0) – Two goals and two assists. Incredible form and value.

Frederik Gytkjær (7.5) – Three goals. Mistaken for his brother who was the league’s top scorer last season, a lot of casuals have enjoyed the early investment of the younger Gytkjær.

Ohi Omoijuanfo (7.0) – Hat-trick in the first home game. 3 of the next 4 fixtures are at home.

Marco Tagbajumi (7.6) – Two goals. Going somewhat under the radar compared to his expensive strike partner Marcus Pedersen. Favourable fixtures.

Jylian Ryerson (4.5) – One goal. Listed as a cheap defender, Ryerson has played both games in an advanced midfield position. Will probably drop a bit deeper once Adegbenro is back. Ryerson is a jack of all trades and due to Viking’s extremely thin squad we could hope to see him OOP for longer parts of the season.

Falling

Ghayas Zahid (10.5) – Tipped by many to be in contention for player of the year, Zahid has nothing to show for so far. Consistent returns are vital for players with a premium price tag. Does however face the bottom team at home in GW3 so those patient enough to keep could finally be rewarded.

Mohammed Abdellaoue (9.4) – An impressive pre season was followed by an anonymous opening GW before being ruled out for GW2 with an injury. Is very injury prone.

Lars Vilsvik (6.0) – Viewed as a full back with big attacking threat, the only thing Vilsvik has produced so far is an own goal. The fixtures are however still good.

Rafik Zekhnini (8.5) & Fredrik Nordkvelle (9.0) – Although the former registered an assist after coming on as a sub, he was benched due poor work ethic in the previous match. The latter is yet to return attacking points.

Samuel Adegbenro (7.5) – After missing the first game through illness, Adegbenro returned to training ahead of GW2. But he missed the second game as well, and now await four of the toughest games Viking will play all season.

Gameweek 3 Picks

Scoring the winner in his debut game, Bård Finne (9.1) will look to continue his good home form when Vålerenga welcome the bottom team Sandefjord. With Abdellaoue being a doubt for Sunday, Finne might benefit from a central striker role.

When it comes to attempts, midfielder Ifeanyi Matthew (6.1) is second only to Bendik Bye with 4 shots per game. The Nigerian will certainly fancy his chances at home against what currently is the joint worst defence in the league.

Marco Tagbajuni (7.6) is on top for average xG (expected goals) per shot. Although a small sample size, this suggests he has so far been on the right place at the right time. Up against a shambolic Aalesund defence, the rather budget friendly striker could potentially even be trusted with the armband.

Just played my wildcard. Pretty similar to Niemi's team, but numbers showed that it's a good squad. Here's my team with some quick comments:

    Leciejewski - McDermott
    Hedenstad - Rolantsson - Ryerson - Kirkeskov - Moe
    Haugen - Svendsen - Midtsjo - Adegbenro - Njie
    Omo - Mos - Lindberg

    2.0 ITB.

I have been planning to double up on Brann defense so Leciejewski and Rolantsson is the way to go. McDermott is nailed on for 4.1 so it's an easy choice. I still think Hedenstad is the best choice from Rosenborg with potential set-piece duties to come (thanks to Niemi for the info), and Ryerson is an OOP attacking midfielder who's playing for one of the best defenses in the league. I really believe Viking will start getting some good results soon. Moe is another easy pick. Kirkeskov may look like an interesting choice here but his numbers are really good. He has 0.38 expected goals + assists per 90 (by far the best among defenders) so I'm getting him for potential attacking returns.

I feel pretty good about having 5 of 8 defenders with most expected goals + assists per 90 in the league.
Kirkeskov 0.38, Rolantsson 0.3, Moe 0.26, Ryerson 0.24 and Hedenstad 0.22. Defenders I didn't choose are Haugen (0.3), Norbye (0.28), and Nasberg (0.24) but they are not nailed on so no loss here.

As for the midfield, I'm pretty happy with Njie (0.36 xGA/90) as 5th mid, Haugen (0.45) and Svendsen (0.36) are doing pretty well. I got Adegbenro (0.45) last week and I believe he will be good. Midstjo (0.45) looked like the best choice from Rosenborg and nailed on. I believe it's a good midfield. When Helland comes back I will try to get him in again though. Probably for Midstjo. Braaten (0.52) may be another good choice here.

I took Shuaibu (0.42) out just because he was dropped, his underlying numbers are good. Though Lindberg (0.55), Omo (0.62) and Mos (0.55) are much better. I don't like Omo's fixtures actually but whatever, he's the most owned player in the league. Mos has some nice fixtures at home.

I guess that's it. I'm pretty satisfied with what I have right now.

Looks good. Not a million miles from my (slightly failed) wc team. Would have liked to keep McDermott but was injured at the time.

Out of interest (only if not a hassle to check) - How do expected goals + assists compare between Mos & Sigurdarson, and between Lindberg & Mortensen?

          There you go:

          Mos: 0.36 + 0.19 (goals + assists)
          Sigurdarson: 0.41 + 0.13
          Lindberg: 0.18 + 0.37
          Mortensen: 0.27 + 0.08
          Omo: 0.58 + 0.04
          Bendtner: 0.3 + 0.13
          Shuaibu: 0.44 + 0.04
          Lehne Olsen: 0.33 + 0.19

Sigurdarson can actually be a choice...

The only problem is with Helland coming back Hedenstad won't take many set pieces. Meling is also a really interesting choice, but I think he could be rotated soon.

Very similar team to mine for sure. Looks good.

Yeah, but he still had good numbers with Helland playing. I think this is a good template team both player quality and fixture wise. Doesn't have any differentials though, except Kirkeskov.

I think a template team is a differential. Few teams have all the template players. A pretty much template team gave me a 3100 ranking last year and currently 3800 this year in FPL.

Kirkeskov is a nice pick though. I'm either getting Kirkeskov, Stølås or K. Haugen as my 3rd defender. All great attacking potential.

Might go back to Hedenstad as well, although it's pretty frustrating as I already sold him and will lose 0.1.

And regarding K. Haugen, he's 100% nailed on. Concerns about Vikings ability to get CS though and he's 1 yellow away from suspension.

Why Haugen though, when you can have Ryerson for a cheaper price? Viking defense looks good in numbers though, I expect at least 3 clean sheets from them in the next seven GWs.

And regarding team value, my TV is 100.3 for now and I only used 98.3. I don't think team value will be much of a problem in this game.

Yeah, that's the biggest problem. Seems like more of an attacking threat though. Not sure what the numbers show, but Ryerson's number should have dropped pretty much after he was moved to DM/CM.

Just saw you said Ryerson is OOP as an attacking midfielder. He's not. That was only for the first 2-3 gameweeks. Ernemann has been playing as a CAM with Ryerson deeper.

Do you have expected G+A numbers from these players?

Morer Vicente (started the season as a CM, now a striker)
                      Zahid

                      Same numbers for some defenders

                      Seck
                      Haraldseid
                      Stølås
                      Kippe (few games)
                      Kind Mikalsen
                      Grøgaard

Numbers are xG first, xA second. Here you go:

                        Vicente: 0.23 + 0.08 (0.492 xG v Viking last game, 1.52 xG v Molde before that. Interesting)
Zahid: 0.18+0.24 (Could be a good pick too. Maybe I can swap him with Midstjo)

                        Seck: 0.04 + 0.03
                        Haraldseid: 0.01 + 0.07
                        Stolas: 0.02 + 0.05
                        Kippe: 0.12 + 0.06
                        Kind Mikalsen: 0.04 + 0.04
                        Grogaard: 0.01 + 0.05

                        Thoughts?

Thanks, this is really great. Morer Vicente looks like a great 5th midfielder right now for me. Scored 2 goals so far, although 1 of them was from a penalty after Kastrati went down injured while winning the penalty. It's either him or Njie for me as a 5th midfielder, but I'm leaning towards Morer Vicente as I don't like the triple up with Ohi and Moe.

Quite surprised at the low numbers for Sack. He has 8 goal attempts inside the penalty box, highest of all defenders so far. What's the numbers based on?

Also quite low numbers for expected assists for Stølås, Haraldseid and Grøgaard. Number of key passes aren't far away from Hedenstad for example. They're also on set pieces and put in a significant amount of crosses. I guess it's the accuracy of the crosses and set pieces that give Kirkeskov and Moe such great numbers?

Kippe could be a great pick. He's such a great header of the ball and a big danger in the box. Back in 2010 he scored 7 goals in 30 matches from CB! He's 39 now though , so I'm not sure you can expect him to play every week. Seems to have regained a place in the starting XI, but I have to do more research on how nailed he is.

I'm also interesting in the numbers for Reginiussen and Meling. Do you have access to numbers for Reginiussen from last season? I think you should have a look at Ryerson xGA in GW1-3 vs. 4-7. I'm pretty sure it has dropped significantly.

Very long post, but I'm also interesting in which defences are underperforming and which defences are overperforming? Especially interested in Haugesund, Lillestrøm and Aalesund.

Good shout for Morer Vicente. I wouldn't have known about him if you didn't write. Do you think he will continue playing up top? If he will, it makes sense to get him in for Njie.

As for Seck, my data has 7 attempts of him inside the box and all of them are headers. Headers do not get high xG values. Hence the low numbers. But he basically gets a header every game, so he may continue scoring. Numbers are based on a lot of factors (location, foot/header, coming from a cross, set piece, dribble, throughball etc. etc.)

Can't look up to Stolas, Haraldseid and Grogaard's numbers in detail for now but it's probably accuracy. Those guys may send killer crosses but maybe their teammates can't reach it, no way to accurately measure it. I'll check their numbers again after three more matches. I'll let you know.

Lillestrom's defense actually do not look as bad as 11 goals conceded (I'll come to that in a bit) so Kippe may too be a good shout.

Meling has 0.07 xGA this season, but you know, small sample size. Reginiussen has 0.04. For last season, Meling had 0.02 + 0.15 and Reginiussen had 0.15 + 0.02.

Ryerson's xGA in GW1-3 is 0.42 (0.4 xG, 0.02 xA), and in GW4-7 it's 0.11 xA and 0.005 xG. But in last three games he has a total of 0 xGA. I guess I'll replace him with Haugen...

Rosenborg conceded 3 from 5.58 xG.
                            Sarpsborg conceded 9 from 5.84.
Aalesund conceded 9 from 13.85 (worst in the league).
                            Valerenga conceded 13 from 7.78.
                            Lillestrom conceded 11 from 7.93.
Viking conceded 10 from 5.46 (best in the league).
                            Haugesund conceded 9 from 9.93.

All other teams have similar numbers for expected and real conceded goals. (+/- 1)

                            Rosenborg scored 13 from 10.2
                            Sarpsborg scored 16 from 9.32.
                            Stabaek scored 13 from 10.52.
                            Molde scored 11 from 8.02.
Kristiansund scored 5 from 3.91 (worst in the league).
                            Viking scored 5 from 9.1.
Valerenga scored 10 from 11.49 (best in the league).

Viking have been really, really unlucky so far. Valerenga are also kind of unlucky. Rosenborg are the luckiest, but they are the biggest team.

I'm still not sure on Haugen though. If Viking gets clean sheets Ryerson will get points. If I invest 0.7 more for defense that'll be 27.9 (and 9.6 on goalies). Feels like a lot. That leaves me with 1.3 ITB and not in a good position to get Helland back in.

Also, if Haugen doesn't perform, Zahid looks like a good shout again. Though I sold him just after GW4. See the pattern here.

I'm not sure om Morer will stay up front. Noticed he plays out left often too.

Ah, fair enough. Seck doesn't offer much threat outside headers in the box. Seems like a beast though.

Yeah, expect Meling to improve. Reginiussen are also normally more dangerous than he has been so far this season.

Ryerson has been moved to CDM and doesn't go much forward. The problem with Viking is they are prone to mistake. The GK is awful. For most goals he's at fault IMO. Not always howlers, but he's a big problem. Might consider Haugen after looking at your stats though.

Might consider Sarpsborg and Albech as well then. What his xGA? Lillestrøm looks decent over Haugesund as well. Haugesund has a quality keeper though. I'll stay away from Aalesund as well.

Also won't double up on Molde attack now. Sigurdarson should be enough. I'm doing Svendsen>Zahid.

I guess there are some quality vs quantity top, hence why Rosenborg are "lucky".

Thanks for all the stats. This is great.

I do agree with you. I think 5.4 is quite expensive for a Viking defender, but if they are as good defensively as your numbers suggest maybe they're worth it.

Both on 2 yellows though and Ryerson a doubt for the weekend due to illness.

You're welcome. I guess I'll just swap Svendsen with Zahid as I said below, or get Morer and Haugen too. It only leaves me with 0.1 ITB though.

Looked into Hedenstad vs. Meling stats. Last match Meling actually took 4 corners and Hedenstad 3. I think they will take most corners with Helland out, although he won't be out for long (most likely).

It also seems like Hedenstad is more involved in their game (82 vs. 65 and 72 vs. 53), based on the previous 2 gameweeks.

On the other hand Meling do put in at least the same number of crosses as Hedenstad. He had 2 key passes against Brann, Hedenstad had none. Meling also had a (horrible) shot.

I think Meling is as good of a pick as Hedenstad. The only thing concerning me is Gersbach. Meling should be first choice, but Gersbach could play every now and then. With 3 games coming up within a week, I wouldn't be too surprised see him getting a start.

What do you think of Reginiussen? Isn't he the best RBK defender pick? He scored 5.0 points per game so far, Hedenstad 4.3 and Meling 3.0 ...

            1. Niemi
              • 9 Years

I'm currently on Reginiussen myself. He is decent and the air and has some goal threat, although stats this season doesn't suggest it. He is the standout player though and racking up bonus points so far (6 points, all in the last 3).

Meling only played the last 3, didn't start the season because of an injury. Missed out on 3 CS and potential attacking returns. 4g3a last year for Stabæk and 1g4a two years ago.

Hedenstad was subbed out with an injury against Aalesund and missed out on 5 points. Would have had the same number of points as Reginiussen if not.

hmm thanks, am wondering whether Helland > Midj is worth a -4. Bit uneasy having no rosenberg attack now, and will have to play Njie against Ros instead...

Njie is a good attacking pick, but not the best fixture for sure. No defenders with an ok fixture?

                I don't think it's worth a -4.

Ok, seems like the game admins are just lazy, he has a long-term injury, although not specified. They could just put Skadet (injured) imo...

This has actually opened an interesting posibility. Kjetil Wæhler is looking at a possible short term comeback to cover the great injury problems Sogndal have. He is 41, but if he actually does this he is a real option in the Sogndal defence...

Wæhler could be an improvement. Steiring at 3.9 could be a good cheap pick if they start keeping clean sheets, although it doesn't look good for them.

Is it viable to drop Svendsen for Adegbenro? Molde doesn't seem to have hit top form, but he's been getting good returns. I also own Sigurdarson and I prefer him over Svendsen. I feel like both are great fantasy assets, but on the other hand I don't like doubling up offensively on a team that's not on fire yet.

          Thoughts?

Sander Svendsen's away stats are dreadful. 3 goals and 3 assists in his career. It's so easy to bench him against one of the best home teams in the league.

Over the next 3 GWs I'd rather have Adegbenro over Svendsen. Since the games are in such quick succession I want to have someone 100% nailed on and fit. Adegbenro is a bit more fixture proof, and since you are running with BBS it's better to spread the risk. I'd only consider Svendsen over Adegbenro if you don't want to transfer either out for the next 6 GWs.

Sure. Haugen has 0.14 xG, 0.31 xA. So it's really similar. I wish I had both, I can still get Zahid in for Svendsen.

Zahid had 1.39 (0.63 if you exclude the penalty) xG, 0.35 xA against Stabaek in his last match too.

Kjetil Wæhler ready for Sogndal-comeback. This, coupled with Ryerson uncertainty, makes Sogndal defenders a real option as differential players for this weekend as they take on a bottom-placed Viking-team at home.

Not gotten any word on if he'll be added to the game in time, but it will be a boost to those around him at any rate.

Which defender to get in for Utvik?

          Keepers are: Leciejewski and McDermott
Other defenders: Hedenstad, Ruud, Vilsvik, Moe. (Perhaps suggest someone who'll be benchable for most weeks as I want to keep 3 at the back?)

I've looked at a cheap 3 way rotation besides Rolantsson and a Rosenborg defender. I've started with Moe as he has good home fixtures coming up AND exceptional attacking potential for a defender, especially at that price. I've set 5.0 as maximum for this rotation. Mainly looking at good fixtures at home, but I'm also considering playing defenders against Kristiansund away (and maybe Sandefjord and Sogndal).

Moe: VIK (10), LSK (12), KBK (14), SAN (18). Also got home fixtures against Rosenborg (8), Brann (16) and Molde (20).

          Kippe/Kind Mikalsen: kbk (8), TIL (11), VIK (13), SIF (15), STB (17). Also got S08 (9) and VIF (20).

Those two rotate fairly well, with decent home fixtures in 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 18. LSK have the best away fixture in 8 as well. What's missing now is a good fixture in GW9, GW16 and GW19-20 (although it's so far out that I'm not sure it's worth planning for)

Ryerson seems to be the best fit, with AAFK (9) and SOG (16). Also got KBK (12), FKH (14) and LSK (18) and offers a good alternative those GWs to Moe.

Albech also seems to be a decent fit. S08 have good stats and should keep more CS going forward. Most CS last year as well. He has TIL (8), LSK (16), FKH (18) and SIF (20). Sadly he has hard home fixtures coming up: VIF (10), MFK (12) and BRA (14). The away fixtures looks o though: lsk (9), fkh (11), san (13) and kbk (19).

Fixtures for my starting defender w/ Ryerson until GW20: kbk, AAFK, VIK, TIL, KBK, VIK, KBK, SIF, SOG, STB, SAN/LSK, aafk/fkh/sif, VIF/bra

Fixtures for my starting defender w/ Albech until GW20: TIL, S08/lsk, VIK, TIL, LSK, VIK, KBK, SIF, LSK, STB, SAN, kbk, SIF

Who do I roll with? I expect Sarpsborg to be tighter than Viking, but there are always a chance Ryerson will be moved further forward again.

Might go Seck over Ryerson/Albech as well. LSK/STB rotate perfectly until GW19. Only "bad" fixture will be Sarpsborg at home for Lillestrøm in GW9 and Brann at home for Stabæk in GW16, but both teams are capable of CS there. Seck is 0.7 cheaper than Ryerson/Albech.

My team atm, 0.8 itb and 1 FT

          Kristiansen - Janukiewicz
          Hedenstad - Ruud - Moe - Rolantsson - Ryerson
          Adegbenro - Svendsen - Trondsen - Njie - Jensen
          Mortensen - Sigurdarson - Omoijuanfo

What to do with Ruud? Keep him on the bench this week or transfer out for Grøgaard maybe?

          Cheers 🙂

If you transfer in Kind Mikalsen or Kippe for Ruud you can do the same rotation as me (look above) with 1 Lillestrøm defender + Moe + Ryerson, with Hedenstad and Rolantsson starting every week.

I'm feeling this as well. They're one of the few teams getting steady defensive returns, and their strikers aren't worthy of investment atm.

Pretty set on my WC team now.

          Leciejewski - McDermott
Rolantsson - Reginiussen - Kind Mikalsen - Moe - Seck
Zahid - Haugen - Midtsjø - Adegbenro - Morer Vicente
          Sigurdarson - Omoijuanfo - Lindberg

2.8ITB. I have enough money to upgrade either one of Haugen, Midtsjø and Zahid to Helland.

Do I get Meling or Hedenstad over Reginiussen?

Do I upgrade Seck to Ryerson or Albech? Barely won't get much gametime anyway.

I can squeeze in Mos for Lindberg, but is it worth it? 3.0 extra.

            Looks solid.

I'm still of a mind that 3 from Rosenborg is optimal, and with things as they stand I'd be looking at Hedenstad or Meling TOGETHER with Reginiussen, but you might be saving space if one of their guns start firing fully?

I've lost faith in Ryerson, Viking don't seem any closer to closing up at the back and his new DM/CM role dropped his off.stats hard. Just a feeling though, can't back that up in numbers...

The Mos/Lindberg discussion is hard: Mos the steady performer and only regular performer on a bottom team, or Lindberg as a set-piece taker and finisher in a team where points rotate round by round..... it's a toss-up in my book, and that soon wins over Lindberg with the cheaper price...

Yeah, I think 3 from Rosenborg is optimal but 2 defenders leaves very little flexibility if/when they start scoring more goals.

Numbers suggest Viking are quite solid at the back, but they are prone to mistakes and such things. He doesn't offer much going forward any more, but still one of the better picks at 4.7 for sure. There are also a chance he could start in an attack position again in the future as well though.

If they were at the same price I'd take Mos, but that 3.0 price difference is massive.

Actually you tempted me to consider 2 Rosenborg players at the back. The fixture looks good. Less money ITB for Midtsjø>Helland though, which would have to be my move to get him in.

On WC too and my current draft is very similar. I have gone with the Haugesund gk and RBK double at the back.

I think double Brann is quite a good idea. Most solid defensive team (together with Rosenborg), especially at home. And they have 2 home games coming up..

Yeah, that is true, although they have only 1 so far. Would feel a bit odd that my four defenders who play every week consist of 2 RBK and 2 Brann. But this game is different to FPL so could be a good differential to most who probably have 1 each.

They are definitely the tightest teams on paper. Both have pretty good fixtures coming up as well. Hmm, I'm tempted to double up on both with McDermott, Seck and Moe to step in if needed.

Any perticular reason to go for Brann-players right now? Are their fixtures improving?

How long is a player usually suspended for? Will Ruud come back after this GW, if yes is it then better to transfer out Vilsvik instead?

Who are the remaining fullback options?
