The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 34

We were braced for disappointment and, four matches in, the Gameweek has delivered just that.

While it would have been hopelessly optimistic to expect big returns from Saturday’s limited set of fixtures, it’s already clear that we may have to settle for consolidation, if not damage limitation, from Gameweek 34.

Middlesbrough have been quick to snatch the role of arch villains.

Brought in by 201,000+ FPL managers – second only to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford for transfer traffic – we started the day wondering if striker Alvaro Negredo could possibly grasp hero status. Sadly, it seems we already have our answer.

In truth, Gaston Ramirez is perhaps the real culprit behind Boro and Negredo’s miserable afternoon. The Uruguayan’s needless back-to-back cautions reduced Steve Agnew’s to ten men having already fallen behind to an early Josh King goal at Bournemouth.

That hindered their toothless attack and meant that Negredo would again be starved of service. Agnew’s side mustered a pitiful five attempts on goal, with Negredo treated to two of those efforts.

Meanwhile, at the back, Ben Gibson – brought in by more than 118,000 FPL managers – marshalled a defence that capitulated to concede four goals and return zero points.

With both Hull City and Swansea City earning victory, the concern now is that Boro may be on the verge of giving up the ghost.

They will face Sunderland on Wednesday for their second Gameweek fixture in what has the makings of a dead rubber. The loser will sure be relegated, the victor, in all likelihood, will be accompanying them. A draw would be useless for both.

Optimists among us will be willing Agnew’s side to lift themselves – to bounce back from today’s damaging 4-0 reverse with a convincing performance with goals and a shutout.

However, we have to question just how much they have left in the tank. We didn’t neccersarily expect profit from the trip to the Vitality Stadium, but we could hardly have envisaged such a fruitless defeat.

Over 155,000 (3.5%) put the armband on Negredo, including 27 of the top 100 FPL managers – Rashford, with 20, was the next most popular armband option. That is a staggering statistic and evidence of just how a double Gameweek can turn heads and warp the decision-making of even the leading managers.

To be fair, today’s big single Gameweek asset fared little better.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku started his clash with West Ham as the most captained – backed by 602,000+ (13.6%) of FPL managers.

No doubt buoyed by his record of nine goals in nine appearances against the Hammers, it was the Belgian’s statistic of just a single goal in his last seven away trips that proved a more worthy indicator of what was to come.

Luakaku mustered just a single blocked shot on goal as a dull London Stadium encounter passed by with a whimper. That was typical of a day of disappointment.

There’s still some way to go, but already the fears surrounding the fools gold of double Gameweek 34 have been realised. It remains to be seen if Rashford and Crystal Palace’s assets can change the outlook.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Against a ghost ship team today in a head to head league that had daniels in it. 12 points behind now. Gutted as i would go top if i won. I also went AOA and benched holgate for Sane. Last week i did the reverse . Not my season

Tell me about it. I'm over thinking every change this season. Last season myself and the wife had a baby so fantasy football was on the back burner and it was a transfer change on a Friday night and that was about it. Little to no research and ended up with my second best rank ever.

I feel you there. There's so much agonising about a 0.1 price change every day on here yet the casuals always get away with last minute minimal tinkering. Some teams who don't make transfers for weeks get great points. I'm gonna try take a step back next season. Just log in Friday like you say and don't over think it.

Yep. I'm in a league with a few close friends. All aren't into the fantasy football thing like me. 6 of us in it. Winner gets a pint from the rest. I'm 2 points ahead of second in it. I made negredo captain this week. Second place who forgot to make a transfer this week has ibra captain and his vice captain is Kane. It's just one of those seasons

2 here and no WC. Doing Zaha > Hazard in 36 with good cash itb and might keep Benteke. They have Hull at home for BB in 37

I don't have BB to worry about either, just TC left. If Benteke keeps his form up I'm tempted to just keep him. I think I saw on the FPL show that Benteke usually finishes seasons very strongly. I'll then get rid of PVA and Zaha in 36.

I had PVA since February and just kept him as I had no wildcard and was stocking up on DGWers. I brought Zaha in a few GWs ago as he looked in great form. I had Ibra who then did his cruciate so shipped him for Tekkers (c).

I'm only messing it's fine I just don't like benteke and although I thought kaku would b a season keeper not sure now. If he blanks again next week I will get rid. He always scores vs West Ham but didn't today. I know 37 he is at home where his firm is good but there might b better options especially that he hasn't got a double either. After this week think about doing Benteke>gabbi

I think double saints attack is ok given they have two doubles and are cheap players. Prefer jwp to tadic, jwp is a good bench boost enabler. Just see how they do this week

I only have TC left though. Tadic is such a frustrating player to own, kinda regretting getting him now. Will just have to leave him in though as no real point getting rid of him with his 2 dgws.

I have 12 points in my team (Negredo(c), Lukaku, Jaku) and 14 in my bench (Mawson, Holgate)

I wish Darmian gets injured trainning does that make me a bad person?

Have sanchez and looking at cech too.

I'll probably get him in on my GW36 WC and then consider swapping him out the next GW if he doesn't look up to it.

Wouldn't get Cech. Their defence has been below par this season. I'd go for DDG instead. Also wouldn't get Ozil, especially if you already have Sanchez

Don't really fancy a double up on Saints. He's just my 5th midfielder and plays Watford at home in 37. Probably won't have to use him in 35/36 considering the rest of my defence!

Fair enough good strategy. Bench Jesus next week probably too early for him anyway. Awsome team 😉

It's only 1 extra game though compared to other teams. Sanchez is enough attacking cover for me with there being no nailed on striker for Arsenal, and Alli/Hazard having good fixtures as well. Might try to fit Monreal in but then I'll have to drop one of Bailly/Vert for him (who also have a dgw in 37)

Alli, tough fixtures. Zaha, £6 for only playing one game. Yoshida, most likely no points. Bailly, tough fixtures and No points potential. More Arsenal, everything to play for..

Really can't drop Alli in his current form. Playing Zaha in 35 and 37 for what might be 2 of the best home games on paper! Yoshida is a cheap defender with 2 DGW. So the only thing where I mind understand you is in Bailly, would you get Monreal instead?

Good arguments but when are you wildcarding?
Having thoughts of Chech, Mustafi, Sanchez and Redmond, specially for 36.

            Wildcard is active.

Sanchez is already in there, don't fancy Redmond (already have Gabbi). Def not doubling up on Arsenal defence, so might do Bailly/Vert to Monreal

There are always pros and cons for every player. 😉 Thinking of Gabby and Jesus gametime when Austin (soon back) and Aguero is still doing ok.

    Choose one:

    A) de Roon > Sane
    B) Lukaku > Kane
    C) Brunt > Yoshida

B, he's the closest to essential and most of Lukaku's games are away now

Any early thoughts on strong one week punts for GW35 before the WC?

The fixtures looks quite meh for me. Mkhitaryan could be a good bet if he doesn't start against City. Southampton is interesting, but I'm maxed out. Otherwise it's mostly away games on decently owned players like Coutinho/Firmino, King and Vardy.
