The Watchlist – Saints Alive

The tempting offer of six fixtures over the final four Gameweeks means Southampton’s budget-friendly regulars are among the main beneficiaries of our latest Watchlist refresh.

The impending Double Gameweek 37 also plays a part as we start to fine-tune our plans for the second Wildcards over the run-in.

Southampton’s pair of Double Gameweeks 36 and 37 elevate both Fraser Forster and Maya Yoshida to the top of the keeper and defender standings respectively.

At 4.4 to Forster’s 5.0, Yoshida – who has a goal, two clean sheets and seven bonus points in his last four outings – offers potential at both ends of the pitch, which should come in handy bearing in mind that the Saints take on Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United (as well as Middlesbrough) across their two doubles.

Between the posts, Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford faces Bournemouth, Hull City and Swansea City (as the first of his Double Gameweek 37) in the next three rounds of fixtures.

Coming in at a mere 4.1, he’s chalked up 11 save points in seven appearances since returning from injury and is sure to be kept busy regardless of whether his side concede. Pickford looks tailor-made as a Bench Boost option in Double Gameweek 37 for those eyeing up Forster as their first choice option.

Similar to Southampton, six matches in the remaining four Gameweeks helps Arsenal duo Petr Cech and Laurent Koscielny move up our ladder, though a single clean sheet in six is a worry.

Nacho Monreal could also profit in his new stint as a wing-back – as evidenced by his goal against Man City at Wembley – yet Arsene Wenger’s switch to a three-man defence could also promote Gabriel as a cheaper option at just 4.8. We continue to monitor both.

Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso and Leicester City’s Robert Huth both have five matches in the remaining four Gameweeks and boast a considerable goal threat.

From Gameweek 36 in particular, Alonso’s schedule (MID, wba & WAT, SUN) looks very encouraging for returns, as he looks to strengthen his grip as the top-scoring defender in FPL.

Huth, meanwhile, has delivered two goals, an assist and a pair of clean sheets in his last six. Owned by just 2%, he could be an effective differential with home encounters against Watford and Bournemouth on either side of a Double Gameweek 37.

Since Craig Shakespeare took the helm in Gameweek 26, the Foxes’ centre-half leads all defenders for attempts, efforts in the area and shots on target.

West Brom’s six-goal man Gareth McAuley also returns in our latest update, ahead of clashes with Leicester, Burnley and Swansea, in addition to a Double Gameweek 37.

Manolo Gabbiadini is the major climber among the forwards in light of Southampton’s upcoming six matches.

Four goals in his first three appearances serve as a reminder of the Italian’s potential. With his fitness now hopefully up to scratch after returning from injury, the January signing – having dropped to just 6.4 – is staking a claim as a third forward option for Wildcard teams over those back-to-back doubles.

As highlighted by his 16-point haul in Gameweek 27, Dusan Tadic is capable of posting huge hauls for the Saints, yet a single assist in the subsequent five also underlines the Serbian’s inconsistency.

Given that Tadic sets you back 6.9, though, we’ll also be monitoring James Ward-Prowse (5.0) and Nathan Redmond (5.9) as cheaper routes into Claude Puel’s attack.

As the only team to offer a pair of home matches in Double Gameweek 37 – against Leicester and West Brom – investment in the Manchester City attack could pay off.

Leroy Sane has to be our pick from the centre of the park. The German international has started each of his side’s last 12 league matches, chalking up four goals and a pair of assists over that period. Priced at just 7.6 and owned by only 5%, Sane squares up to Middlesbrough, Palace and Watford from next week onwards.

Gabriel Jesus‘ return to training stalls Sergio Aguero in the forward standings. Having found the net in five successive Gameweeks – and scoring in the FA Cup loss to Arsenal – the Argentine has found his best form of the season in recent weeks.

But Aguero limped off at Wembley, so if Jesus can return to contention, a price of just 8.6 to his team-mate’s 12.8 would have significant repercussions on our end of season plans.

Bournemouth’s Josh King keeps his spot among the top five midfield options after netting for the eighth time in nine outings in Saturday’s rout of Middlesbrough. He may not have a Double Gameweek to offer but a trip to Sunderland, followed by home clashes with Stoke and Burnley, could barely be kinder for the 6.1-priced midfielder. Those without Wildcards will surely be clinging on.

Wilfried Zaha slips a little this time around ahead of his home encounter with Spurs on Wednesday. Palace have a kind home fixture against Burnley next weekend but, with trips to City and United in Gameweeks 36 and 38 respectively, will his owners look to hold for a Gameweek 37 visit from Hull when the Eagles are one of ten teams without a double?

Elsewhere for Palace, Christian Benteke owners will be holding tight, for now at least, – double-figure hauls against Chelsea and Liverpool in the last five Gameweeks suggest he could continue to deliver returns.

Meanwhile, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy looks an assured starter for the five-match run-in. He’s hardly cheap at 9.9, but the front man’s transformation under Craig Shakespeare has been remarkable.

Vardy has racked up six goals, three assists and 12 bonus points in seven appearances since the change of manager, producing points on each of those occasions.

Having netted eight of his 11 goals at the King Power Stadium, you’d fancy Vardy to benefit from those home clashes with Watford and Bournemouth (either side of his Double Gameweek 37) to flirt with selection in our squads. Those with Wildcards and in need of a combustible end of season differential will surely be considering the Foxes striker.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on desktop and mobile.

You -could- hold out another week. Gives you the luxury of combating newer injuries etc before GW36.

Then again, tricky week for your current team. Not getting Boro out ASAP has the potential to hit your budget for the WC.

I'm intrigued by the backtracking from Big Sam. After Sunday, he was warning of major changes to the squad. Today, he's debating the merits of sticking with the same line up that got him here. Might be code for sticking with the same set of starters and then substituting them off early if the game is out of reach or they look particularly sluggish.

dont worry folks, Allardyces deep inferiority complex because of all these 'foreigns' (just witness his long, post match explanation as to how he bested Klopp with very little possession)-means he will field a strong team against Spurs. His entire career is founded on one up manship and nothing else

He does also strike me as a bird in the hand type personality. Why play back-ups tomorrow and then basically bet the farm on a Saturday match vs Burnley? Say they have an off game on Saturday, then he's looking at two away matches against the Manchester clubs sandwiched by a home match against HULL, who are in a dogfight for any result possible.

When jesus was scoring said cant be dropped. Aguero 6 in 6 do the math

I think you're stating an opinion rather than fact. Say I brought in Aguero off the back of this post, and he was rested vs Boro. That's a possibility right?

Jesus will get fewer minutes as he's coming back from an injury

But if he's fit, think Pep will drop Aguero (form or no form) - seems to prefer the former over the latter

Thinking of spreading the Hazard money to get 3 Che defenders. Mid, Wba and Wat. I don't know how any of these sides can put a single goal past Che. Assuming that's 3 clean sheets, 3 Che defenders give you 6x3x3=56 points (excluding bonus) over GW 36, 37. Can Hazard score 56 points over 3 matches?

They haven't kept a clean sheet in 11 games now, and if they get closer to winning the title - that'll not change

So would actually be very careful of Chelsea defenders. They aren't into clean sheets anymore

With Alonso probably keeping his place at LWB... ooof! (Although if that was the back three, we'd probably concede most games.)

You're assuming Chelsea will definitely keep those clean sheets. Judging their recent defensive record, anyone could score just the one against them.

Also, not having Hazard is going to be dangerous at the latter part of the season. Many people will be bringing him in based on recent form & you are risking missing out on his returns.

It's not the worst thing to spread the Hazard money about - but I would not do it for three (expensive) Chelsea defenders.

I was thinking of doubling up with Chelsea defenders for their run in. We just need Spurs to keep on their heels to keep rotation to a minimum.

They haven't kept a clean sheet in a long while and Hazard should outscore all their defenders

Ya, I get your point about Chelsea not keeping clean sheets. But think again. Middlesbrough? West Brom? Watford? They scream clean sheets.

Be careful to compare your players in their respective positions, i.e.
      Hazard with Mids
      Alonso with defs
      Costa with forwards
I look at it like this rather than mixing positions up, I think it's more relevant that way.

      1. Esraj
        • 8 Years

Ya, that's okay. But getting Hazard means I have to get Holgate, Stephens, Yoshida and Maguire, Pickford and Jaku. So, I was just thinking whether it's worth getting him at the expense of a cheap defense.

Haha it is not logical to say that Hazard needs to score 56 points.

You need to compare 3 Chelsea defenders + a cheap mid VS. 3 cheap mids + Hazard for this post to make even just a little bit of sense......

      1. Licious Lizard
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

And even that doesn't make sense as the 3 Chelsea defenders + a cheap mid are around 24m, while Hazard + let's say Yoshida, Stephens and Holgate are cheaper.

    Sanchez / Hazard / Eriksen / Sané / King
    Kane / Jesus / Gabbiadini

With a front 8 of the above, should we even be that worried if one of Jesus/Gabbi doesn't get consistent -enough- minutes? Apart from BB, we have to bench one anyway.

Does it make it worth the risk?

Love it. Pretty much a perfect front 8.

I've been tracking Ozil recently, and think he might be a decent alternative to Sanchez.

The last thing you want is for the player you've benched to play the full 90 and the one you've started to have a cameo of a few minutes. Especially since none of them look likely to be benched and stay benched, unlike Walker, Valencia. If they're fit, they'll play some part in each match.

Nice front 8 'potentially' may be missing Alli/Cout but you can't have them all

Likely to be 0.1/0.2m short of Alli over Eriksen (I have Alli at the moment), which is a shame - but points output is relatively similar.

I'd like Coutinho & I only got rid of him a couple of weeks back when there was news he wouldn't start (for Zaha). That week went fine; Zaha scored well with Cout playing 45 mins (but scoring)... but unfortunately can't find a way to get him back in.

Are we too pessimistic about Negredo's contribution in GW34? Agreed, Boro are rubbish but Negredo 'can' get a couple of goals against Sunderland and suddenly emerge as the GW's hero. He's got a couple of double digits this season, this has to the week if another one has to come surely.

That Bavies news with Valencia in my pack definitely pushes me to use my AOA.
If I play AOA and say Bavies doesn't play does my first defensive sub come in?
Say I had no other def playing-does AOA then just play
    1-5-3?

Yes, price changes occur as normal. Beware of selling someone who you have a lot of value tied up in as if you then try and bring them back in they will be more expensive.

Yes I made that mistake last year and lost a lot of TV because of it. So shall I keep my team as is until the last minute, only transferring in early those players I'm convinced will go up in price?

    2. HazardAGuess
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 1 month ago

      Yes, definitely.

A tactic I'm employing is to bring in the players I 100% want on my WC, regardless. Same goes for those I'm a 'maybe' on but might rise.

If you have players that are at danger of dropping, shift them to a player of a similar/same price that is currently stable. (Also, watch the player's selling price to see if a drop will affect you.)

If you have players that may rise before the deadline, but who are not in your plan, keep ahold of them for as long as possible. You could nab a cheeky 0.1m profit.

Pep loves both Sane & Jesus. Only reason I can see Sane on the bench would be for a rest because he's been playing continuouslyacross competitions for so long now, Jesus because he's just back from injury.
