Dugout Discussion – Southampton vs Man United

After Alexis Sanchez ended Double Gameweek 37 with a season-high 27 points, Wednesday night’s meeting at St Mary’s has a lot to live up to.

Southampton entertain Manchester United in the penultimate showdown of a seven-day round of fixtures, and it’s fair to say that Claude Puel and Jose Mourinho both owe us a favour after their recent penchant for rotation scuppered many best-laid wildcard plans.

The Saints’ boss reinstalls a number of regulars after the 2-1 win at Middlesbrough on Saturday. Snapped up by 40,000+ and 27,000+ respectively for their second successive Double Gameweek, Jack Stephens and Manolo Gabbiadini return to the first XI along with the likes of Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond and Cedric Soares.

Despite mustering just a single assist in his last six league outings, Gabbiadini is his side’s most captained player, with 15,000+ handing him the armband for the Double.

Fantasy faith in United is at a low as Mourinho looks to keep his main men fresh with one eye on next week’s Europa League final against Ajax.

Marcus Rashford continues to be used sparingly on the domestic stage and is handed a third successive appearance on the bench, though Wayne Rooney is named in the first XI for the fourth successive league outing.

Having found the net in three of his last four Gameweek appearances, the Red Devils’ skipper is the most captained FPL asset among Mourinho’s starting line-up, with almost 28,000 affording him the armband.

Really don't think Romero is a great shout anyway, Mourinho will field an experimental side of youngsters, Bailly may be out, and Gabbiadini won't get a penalty.

Nah, never got a spare FT, luckily... 😛

Not my captain though, fortunately every player of the team did well to reduce the damage of Sanchez/Jesus(c)

Lets see how Kane(c) do, anything more than 2pts will do the job at this stage...

This final gw is really becoming quite the benching headache.
1.4 in the bank and fancying Coutinho and Vardy for the 38

    Alonso Cahill Benalouane Stephens Holding
    King Sanchez Haz Eriksen Albrighton
    Kane Jesus Llorente

    1. Was 99% set on Haz > Cout, but dont wanna get burned by a Hazard show vs Sun
    2. Can see both llorente and vardy getting good returns, but is vardy in worth it?
    3. Haz > Cout leaves me w money to burn. Any last hoorah punts for the goalfest on sunday?

See previous two page discussions but I come down on the side of Haz to Cout if you are leading your ML as a template move. Haz will be preserved for the FA Cup Final and go easy at a cameo Sunday.

Hazard + Capoue to Coutinho + Lallana (-4)?
    Benching Gabbiadini.

ML won and 28 k before tonight's game. Below 20 k would be great but very unlikely. Might as well back Liverpool players and enjoy the final day.

    1FT 0.7 ITB

    Courtois
    Cahill, Kompany, Vertonghen

I think Id be tempted to start Cech this week - given the uncertainty around what the Chelsea line-up might look like.

Can someone explain the logic of taking hits in the last ganeweek of the season? Unless there is a problem if fielding 11 players I can't see how a hit will pay off a priori?

I think the 'logic' is more to do with having a fun punt and a final farewell than any realistic expectation of improved points returns.

To get the maximum possible points.

For many it's actually a very logical step. Say you are 14k rank and you want top 10k. Well you're going to need to think clever and get a big differential captain to get top 10k rank so many will be thinking move Hazard to Coutinho and spend a hit on Gabbi to Vardy/Sturridge (c).

      1. Lizard Lips
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 10 days ago

These moves it's feasible you make an extra 20+ points and hit targets, catch ML leaders. Obviously it's risky but it is for many better than not taking the hit and ultimately not giving yourself a chance.

So I am now thinking (for the 100th change of mind today alone) of Hazard and Gabbi to KDB and Llorente. Both are in form, City have a lot to play for and I read a post by Hotdog saying Swansea should still give it a good go. I will be without Vardy against a slow defence and any Liverpool players though if I do this.

    A) Hazard Gabbi Bailly > Coutinho, Vardy, cheap bench enabler (-4)

Trying to narrow down to teams who have it in them to get good scores, good attacking minded teams. Swansea is one of those teams indeed.

Not sure, very possibly and can't see any other move he'd want to make.

                  His team would be:

      Defence is good.

We've the same front 7 aside from Hazard/Alli. I can't see any glaring changes personally. Hazards minutes and goal involvement are more in question than Alli's though.

If spurs doesnt get a cs tonight i might have made a big mistake that could cost my ml..That is chosing Vertonghen over Monreal

    Since gw36- Monreal - 3 cs / Vertonghen - 0 cs so far

I felt at that time spurs were racking up the cs's and arsenal were dodgy at the back. And thought monreal might get rested for atleast onegame.

Things worked out differently than i thought 😉

    Pickford
    Monreal Mawson Alonso
    Sanchez Alli Siggy King Sané
    Jesus Kane

    DeGea Benteke Holding Kompany

Such a hard 11 to pick. Holding may be a better shout over Monreal, he had 2 good chances against Sunderland, one shot was blocked and the other a header straight at Pickford. Got in good positions though. Don't wanna bench Mawson either.

Some good options to draft in but really don't feel like I need a change all that much.

Alli to Coutinho, Sané to Fabregas/Willian is all I can really see that might be worth doing.

    Any thoughts? 1ft, 0.1itb

Fabregas is in Spain at the minute though. I'm really not sure I want to take a hit this week either. I think it's a case of grass is greener sort of thinking.

Guess it's just see how Leicester and Spurs get on tonight.

If Vardy scores and Kane doesn't, that might be my transfer and then Alli to KdB maybe

It can be a season-changing day.
I think it was back in 2010 that Lampard saved my season. In the last game against Wigan, Chelsea won 8-0 and secured the title. Drogba got a hatrick and my captain, Lampard, got (I think) a goal and four assists with three bonus points. Happy days!
I have a feeling that Liverpool might trounce Middlesbrough this time around. Liverpool are attacking anyway and have everything to play for; Middlesbrough have nothing to play for. It feels like the kind of game in which Liverpool might score four or more goals. There's no telling now if Origi, Sturridge, Firmino, Coutinho, or Lallana will be among the goals. Milner might not be a bad shot either if he takes a penalty.
Likewise, Man City have it all to play for, though Watford players will perhaps be more motivated to impress after the sacking of Mazzarri. Jesus, Sane, Aguero, de Bruyne, Toure, and Sterling all have plenty to prove.
Personally, I think it's worth a gamble on the final day and risk going for a non-obvious captain, like I did back in 2010.

Could be some huge scoring games on Sunday:

Liverpool & City something to play for vs tripe (Middlesbrough & Watford)
    Chelsea showboating vs awful Sunderland
    Spurs vs Hull
Arsenal must win big vs Everton

Therefore Burnley vs West Ham will be the 4-4 score

I'm thinking that it means the players will be wanting to show the club hierarchy that they're serious so they don't get sold as part of negotiations with the new manager. Insecurity can motivate better performances. I think it's different from, say, West Brom, who are stable and safe with nothing to play for against another team in a similar situation. That makes me think there's more chance of a low-energy 0-0 between West Brom and Chelsea. All this makes me lean to a Liverpool captain or Sanchez for the final week.
