Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Jack Butland

Having finally recovered from a long-term ankle injury, Stoke City stopper Jack Butland served a late reminder of his talents towards the tail end of last season.

Stuck on the sidelines for the opening 33 matches, the fit-again Butland replaced Lee Grant on Mark Hughes’ teamsheet and chalked up 20 points in the remaining five Gameweeks.

He signed off for the season with a 10-point tally against Southampton in Gameweek 38 to hint at what’s to follow in 2017/18.

  • That lack of pitch time is likely to affect Butland’s cost across the Fantasy games this season. He’s expected to come in at a maximum of 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League – identical to last term’s initial value – though there’s a case that he could even be listed as cheap as 4.5 considering that Stoke shipped 56 goals in 2016/17. Given that no Potters’ defender scored more than once in the previous campaign, Butland looks like the plum route into Hughes’ backline next time around.
  • A look back at Butland’s breakout season in 2015/16 highlights why we have such faith for the upcoming campaign. Afforded the number one slot as a result of Asmir Begovic’s move to Chelsea, he proceeded to rack up 132 points in 31 appearances – an average of 4.3 points per match (ppm) that term is identical to the top scoring keeper from last season, Burnley’s Tom Heaton.
  • Like Heaton, Butland’s ability to register save points and bonus boosts his potential beyond just shutouts. He chalked up a save point in 18 of those 31 outings in 2015/16 and was the leading keeper for saves at the point of his injury. He also delivered 14 bonus points that season – only Heaton (21) bettered that tally last time around. He was quick to replicate that output last term, claiming four saves points, two bonus and a pair of clean sheets from those five outings.
  • Looking at Stoke’s displays across the last two seasons, Butland’s absence clearly hampered their resilience. Without him, Hughes’ men conceded 66 goals in 40 matches– an average of 1.65 against – and produced nine clean sheets, or one every 4.4 matches. With Butland between the posts, they were breached 45 times in 36 outings – an average of 1.25 goals against – and registered 12 shutouts, or one every three matches.
  • Stoke’s opening set of fixtures – which pits them against seven of last year’s top ten in the first eight Gameweeks indicates that many will perhaps be keen to avoid their defensive regulars. Yet, as we saw in the case of Heaton last season, Butland’s shot-stopping prowess should keep his tally ticking over and strengthens his case as a “fire and forget” option between the posts.

I'd probably start with using the comparison tool on players once you've got some of your pre-season targets lined up.

In terms of the tables, you could always try making your own, more simplified versions - guide here.

      https://vimeo.com/51468138

Hopefully, we will be adding some additional tables next week - I'll likey provide a quick run through those when they come out.

If it's not already there, is it possible to add a filter for minimum number of appearances.
Like only show players with a minimum of "drop down 1to10" appearances.
I find that while sorting by some stats, specially minutes per ***** stats, some bit part players come up top.

You can do exactly that by building your own table. See the video I linked.

You can choose the stats to include and specify a filter based on minutes, matches played, or any stat and value.

Okay, a question while I make the kids breakfast.

More chatter on King to Spurs. If this happens or firms up before the prices, do we think it helps to justify any re-classification as a forward?

Personally, I think if he stays at Bournemouth, he might just remain as a midfielder.

Talk of Spurs move is putting that in jeopardy. Plus. Would we even care? Understudy to Kane, with occasional game on the right flank beckons if he moves - we'd not consider him anyway. Would be a massive shame.

    1. FC Lackless [BALEGIUM]
      • 7 Years

I completely agree he's a midfielder and will destroy his usefulness [at least for gw1] if he moves to spurs. An opportunity opens up at Bou though ... Stan might be the man if the price is right.

So if he's kept as a mid, what's the price point? It would have to be high enough to safeguard against a sustained run of starts up front. Does he justify 8.5 or more?

Not for me, as mentioned by Dreams his appeal has wilted a bit whether he stays or goes...I wouldn't be interested at anything over 7m initially.

Can't see him being that cheap - 16 goals last season. Even if we accept he's unlikely to mirror that, I can't see him coming in under 8.0 as a mid.

He had a problem at the end of the season but came back for final match so he's fine for pre-season as far as I know.

Afobe another factor for sure - if King is classified as a forward, BOU would have five in the game.

Reclassifying him as a forward no matter in which team he is out of Bournemouth and Spurs, will dent his appeal.
      A. At Bournemouth, Defoe will take over the penalty duties and will most probably score the goals because that's what Defoe cab do.
      B. At Spurs, I seriously doubt his game time. He'll be out of the radar unless he proves himself all over again.

Agreed, but the move makes sense for them, sadly. Cover for Kane, more pace to use out wide as required. I do fear there's some legs in it.

If he went to Spurs, I'd see him as more an 'understudy' to Son.

I'd still be buying Kane for Spurs and King would slide down my wishlist, although he could end up being better value than Alli or Eriksen if significantly cheaper. I'd be monitoring his minutes before I leapt in, if that happened.

Conversely, if he stays as a MID at BOU he'll be high on my watchlist even if I'm not intending to start with him.

King is an overrated player IMO. He went on a hot streak akin to Ramsay and Vardy. He wil be back to normal this season. Let him go to Spurs it will make Defoe an even better option with less competition. I still don't trust Howe with strikers as I think he will rotate Defoe, Afobe and Wilson.

Can't see Defoe being rotated. He looked incredibly fit at Sunderland - surprisingly so. Also, he just has to sit in the box - he won't need to do the work he did at Sunderland.

Harsh on Wilson and Afobe though - it will be interesting to see how Howe manages that.

I'm slightly afraid of rotation too.

All about the prices - if there's a better value mid at Defoe's price (8.0 I am guessing, which was Coutinho's price last year) then I'll leave him but atm he's pencilled in for me.

Looks like Chelsea are going to acquire Antonio Rudiger - very handy young German centre back who was impressive in the Confeds Cup just now.

Presumably that would push Zouma out the door on loan and close the door to Andreas Christensen making the first team squad. With Ake already gone, it's a shame these young (cheap) Chelsea options aren't going to be viable to us.

I've heard nothing but good things about Christensen and I really rate Zouma but yeah, neither seem likely to be in first team plans.

Chelsea have become like a Football Manager powerhouse - signing up starlets only to leave them benched for seasons and sell them with a handful of appearances.

Rudiger might just be the next name on the conveyor belt.

Zouma on the bench more likely IMO. Needs cover with CL this season.

Yeah, I'm intrigued. Assuming Conte plays a back 3 again, his first choice will be Azpi, Cahill and Luiz. So there ought to be 3 defenders as cover which in theory would be Rudiger, Zouma and Christensen.

But is Zouma prepared to spend another year getting the occasional run-out after seeing an expensive purchase push him down the pecking order? And Christensen has just completed 2 seasons on loan playing first team football and spectacularly well by all accounts. As Ake shows, there's only so long these boys can wait, especially as experience shows good youth players hardly ever break through at Chelsea.

It would be perfect if one or both go on loan to another PL side and play football, but I think it far more likely they'll go abroad again, either on loan or permanently. Maybe they'll give it one more season, seeing up Cahill slows up. I hope so - I want to see plenty of them this season.

          What if Conte does this?

          Courtois
          Zouma Luiz Cahill
          Azpi Kante (Bakayoko) Alonso
          Pedro Hazard
          (Lukaku)

I think he will do this, but with Rüdiger/Christensen, not Zouma.

I don't think Zouma is rated highly by Conte in his system.

Azpi had played sort-of wingback before Conte arrived (with Ivanovic bombing down the other wing), yet Conte chose Moses in that role. Not sure what his thinking was, but presumably he sees Azpi as a central defender 100% and not a wingback.

Anyone think Luiz could be an option if he comes in at .5 cheaper than the rest?

Could be a way into clean sheets at least. Surprised at how few goals he has in his career.

              Interesting.

If the top defenders are 6.5 again, he might sneak in at 6.0 in which case I'll be more tempted than Pete Doherty in a crack den.

Blimey. It makes me wonder about playing Fantasy for other sports - could a top FPL manager take a year off to study NFL and then compete with some of the big boys in the US at their own game? And vice versa.

Fantasy Sports Swap. Would be a great experiment, if not a Channel 4 documentary.

I'm pretty sure fantasy skills translate across sports if you put enough time and effort into research before it. Finished #18 overall and England's #1 in the Champs Trophy fantasy earlier this year.
Problem with NFL fantasy is they only offer draft and DFS leagues, no way to have an elite rank.

Do people think Butland will be an upgrade over Grant? I thought Grant was excellent and am not convinced that Butland will be much better. Mark Hughes is a manger under pressure IMO especially if some of the newer appointments (De Boer, Silva, Clement) get off to a good start.

Yeah Butland is a proper FPL beast, really hope he's 4.5. It would be good to have Begovic, Ben Foster, Butland at 4.5's to give some choice. Heaton will get a price rise i'd imagine, so it might be him, Fraiser Forster in the 5.0 category... If they are 5.5's they may not be very popular.

I had Grant and to great effect in the latter part of the season. However, the stats show Butland is better (at least in FPL terms).

I'm going to spend 4.5 max on a keeper and it'll be Butland IF he's 4.5 but he'll probably be 5.0. Then Begovic, but if he's 5.0 probably I'll go for Fabianski.

I wouldn't be looking at anyone else from Stoke though - like you, I'd rate Sparky in the bottom 3 or 4 managers in the PL this season.

Jurgen Klopp will reportedly block Daniel Sturridge from leaving Liverpool because it will cost too much to replace him.

The Sunday Mirror say there is “massive interest” in the striker, but the “inflated transfer market” is proving a barrier to any sale.

Apparently Sturridge will now stay unless there is a “mammoth offer”.

I'm sure there's big interest but probably not for fees that meet a valuation. Contracts would be interesting too - you'd surely have a pay for play element in there?

Really don't know what will happen to Sturridge - he's such a talent but the injury situation makes him such a risk for any investor.

I see Liverpool have 5x fixtures in the 14 days from 12th - 26th Aug... Wonder will Klopp Rest/Rotate Mane for the PL games? Especially with it directly followed by international break. It will be fascinating to see how their high tempo style of play impacts them with an expanded fixture list this year. Also Arsenal may catch them on the back foot at anfield, with gunners having full week's preparation & no european games at that point!

The danger is that Liverpool's attack will just be a fluid unit, rotating frequently with a lottery for who will be benched at any given time. Salah's arrival gives them a lot of options and, ironically, probably cuts ours down.

There is a reason that Eriksen, Alli, Hazard and Sanchez etc got the most points and that is because they are nailed on to play.

City and Liverpool players are far less nailed now given all the signings. Spurs attacking players still look decent options IMO because Spurs don't have the strength in depth.

Would be interesting to see how an all Belgian FPL squad would do:

    Courtois - (Mignolet)
    Alderweireld - Vertonghen - Kompany - (Kabasele) - (Denayer)

    Lukaku - C.Benteke - (Origi)

A bit more now...hopefully 3 out of 4 anyway. Unless I misunderstood Mark, he's indicated there will be a price squeeze on goalies with a [4.5-5m range]. If true, think it would be a bit much having Foster/Fab/Beg the same price as De Gea so expect them at 4.5.

I may just revert back to my old formula of 4.5/4.0 a second I feel we may need every single penny in attack this year, at least early days till we settle or find a 'cheap enabler'

8 CS. 6 of them at home. 5 of them after Clement arrived. 60 points in 17 games with Clement is alright.

Most people would rotate Fabianski with someone like Foster. Fabianski had 33 points in 8 games at home with Clement in charge. That's acceptable, but finding the next Heaton/Gomes/Schmeichel would pay off better.

Virtual coin flip would surely be the fairest way to settle a tie such as that, fpl should really give both managers the prize in this case.

Should do very well, still improving and with better quality teammates you'd imagine the 'going missing' & 'attitude' should become a thing of the past once he's got the move he so obviously wants?
For all Costa's faults he always put a shift in and Big Rom will be expected to do the same. He has a Kane-like quality that we saw in that 'good' home spell and a few away games, so with much better players around him he should really move to the next level.

Bournemouth conceded 67 goals in 38 games = 1.8 per game (rounded up).

Ake played 8 games for Bournemouth and they conceded 15 goals in those 8 games = 1.9 per game (rounded up).

Without Ake they conceded 52 goals in 30 games = 1.7 per game.

Too much reliance being placed on Ake's attacking output if selecting him?

Spot on - I was surprised at this. I was trying to find some data to back up how he could improve them defensively but it wasn't there.

For me, Daniels is still the stronger option but we need pre-season to assess.

I expect Daniels to come in at 5.5. PPM I expect Begovic to be the best value at BOU.

The 'eye test' says he is actually a good defender. A run of games and a chance to build a settled partnership, make him promising. I think he will be a big success.
If They keep King, I fancy them to be a solid side.

Ake's BOU starting c/s rate is 0.375 per match v 0.233 without him and PL points increase sharply too, 1.62 with him v 1.1 without. Intriguing player, 5.0 could still offer good value.

No issues for me at the moment, but I have tested multiple browsers on both Android and PC, and Chrome seems to struggle on this site. First time in my life I have experienced shorter loading time in Internet Explorer than Chrome.

Chrome is fast on IOS for me. Is it painfully slow on Android? That's been the issue reported. I just wonder if its memory related on dependent on phone spec.

It is painfully slow in Android when it's slow. However I have noticed that as soon as the comments page changes, it's back to normal speed.

At times, yes. The loading speed is very slow if you are in an article with many posts/comments and it is improved as soon as there is a fresh page/article.

Still get the odd delay in comments loading. Half the page will load and the rest will be black, even though you can scroll down. It's like the browser is waiting on something before it paints what is there. Weird.

Do we think Lukaku's home form shtick will stay with him in Chelsea? Would be interesting because both Hazard and Lukaku were the rwo big hitters with home form. How do we think that will affect their output, at home and aqay from home? Once Hazard is fit again of course.

That's a very good question. Lukaku's form was so weighted to home matches last season we will certainly need to watch for that. We certainly see Hazard's attacking numbers dip on the road but that's because Conte has them sit deeper and counter.

It will be fascinating to compare Lukaku at Chelsea vs Lukaku at Everton early on. That data could even covince me to look at him over Kane if Spurs start to falter at Wembley.

Mark - is there any chance of getting a Games played stat for Teams on stats tables in the Members Area?

There's Appearances for Players, but only Time Played for Teams, which is a bit clunky. I only ask because when you start to get blanks around DGW time, a team might look like they're doing well defensively, or poorly offensively, when really they just haven't played as many.

    Home vs Away (2016/17).

Difference in points per game at home versus points per game away. Positive number means stronger at home.

    Burnley 1.37
    Everton 1.32
    Leicester City 1.26
    Hull City 1.16
    Tottenham 1.05
    Bournemouth 0.84
    Watford 0.84
    Arsenal 0.79
    West Bromwich 0.68
    Swansea City 0.68
    Stoke City 0.53
    Chelsea 0.47
    Middlesbrough 0.42
    Liverpool 0.32
    West Ham Utd 0.26
    Manchester City 0.11
    Southampton 0.11
    Manchester Utd -0.05
    Crystal Palace -0.05

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I expect Utd and West Hame will improve this season at home. Burnley could be in trouble if the opposition have a plan to beat them at Turf Moor. Spurs may be impacted by moving to Wembley.

      Nice stuff. Thanks.

Surprising to see United and City at the foot - City, in particular, were stronger defensively on their travels.

We do need an outlier like Burnley - it makes it far easier to get cheap clean sheets and work rotations.

Liverpool fans what (in your opinion) is Klopp's 1st and 2nd Eleven?

    Mignolet (Karius)
Clyne (X) Lovern Matip (Klavan Lucas) Milner (Moreno)
    Henderson (Can) Wijnaldum (X)
Mané Coutinho Salah (Lallana Origi Ings)
    Firmino (Sturridge)

Oh yes, I'm glad we'll have a stronger bench for sure 🙂

But I can't see there being 4 players over 100k a week given the quality of player Klopp is looking to bring in. I think we may see 1 departure of a high earner. Lovren, Henderson, Sturridge all over 100k and I don't think any are nailed. So let's see
