The Numbers Game – Manchester United

Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Ben Davies then OR give up on the Spurs defence with the bigger pitch and allow for Alli/Erik/Kane

Has actually played an awful lot more at left back than right back. Like 44 apps at left back compared to 10 at right back.

If Cedric is to miss the start of the season and VVD is still in his current situation come GW1, who are the best Saints options at the back?

Forster at £5m is safe and Bertrand is the premium pick at £5.5m.

Yoshida & Stephens 'should' start the season as they ended the last, alongside each other, at £5m each.

Pied seems to be right back of choice in Cedric's absence. At £4.5m he'll presumably offer a very cheap route into one of the leagues better back lines for GW1 at least.

Would Pied be worth the added risk, in hope of getting a few GWs out of him, or would it be better to stick with Forster and/or Bertrand?

    1. PvA
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 11 months ago

Don't think it's worth the risk personally. It's just a wasted FT or a hit in the first few gameweeks. If lucky it'll be 4+ weeks, but I doubt it barring injuries

I can, but you have to back yourself to bring in budget and mid-priced options against poor opposition. Playing the fixtures should earn you purple patches of points.

That's why I'm a little confused more of the RMT's aren't targeting the opening fixtures. Some seem to be setting up a team for the season.

    3. Hamish
      • 7 Years

Yes ofc, there's a lot of evidence backing up the choice of a premium defence filled with wing backs. A much higher ppg than their similarly priced midfielders.

From what I remember and I don't have the stats to prove it, but I believe Kane usually starts the season slow and then gets into a rhythm, only reason why I'm tempted by Aguero and Alli.

Swansea are so busy rejecting Everton's offers for Sigurdsson, they aren't doing any business on their own. I fear they might go down this season. I've always liked them for their style of football, but the quality of the squad just isn't at the right level for me. They've brought some ok signings, but I'm afraid it won't be enough.

    1. Twisted Saltergater

Indeed, they kept losing important players and replacing them with mediocre ones. Similary Southampton have an exodus every odd season, but last year was the only time they failed to replace the sold players properly.

Why is everyone overlooking Chelsea defence? Best defence in the league last year, and fixtures are reasonable. Kante and now Bakayoko in front of an already strong defence. Alonso/Azpi are the men

Burnley screams a clean sheet, doesn't it. Would like Azpilicueta, but I think I'll end up with David Luis at 0.5m less.

Too expensive with better value elsewhere. Also rotation now. And they weren't the best defence in the league last year. Spurs and United were ahead of them. Bakayoko is also injured for a while.

Yeah he did. But only because DDG and Lloris missed some games where their replacements got the clean sheets I think. Also, goals conceded is a better measure of a defence than clean sheets, which United and Spurs beat Chelsea on anyway.

        Burnley clean sheet
        Spurs away is tough
Everton at home was 5-0 last year
        Leicester away was 3-0
        Arsenal at home was 3-1

They have not gone bad overnight.

Quite remarkable how Palace snuck in the Premier League out of nowhere, looked doomed, stabilised and here they are four years on, with loads of established talent and De Boer as manager.

Have I just stumbled on a very good way of playing the draft game with my answer to TL's post about multiple teams?

I nearly convinced WR to play picks from Northern clubs vs picks from Southern clubs last season instead of the usual game...but he changed his mind.

Could that idea be widened for picking draft teams (not done one yet)...so for instance one picker could pick English players whilst another European, a third one could pick S American and a fourth one ROW.

We could actually restrict ourselves for individual picks in smaller mini leagues by any number of permutations and come up with some really nice varieties of leagues couldn't we?

    Would it work?

Yep that would work, you could also require each player to use a different formation each week

So we could do picks from NW clubs v Picks from London clubs v Picks from the rest...

Or indeed something as daft as all picks from Man City vs all picks from Man United..?
