The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

I wish I hadn't read about the option of going Elliot / 4.0 in nets.

It's a bad idea but the money it gives you outfield is delicious.

I think I'm going to do it. I hate spending money on keepers. That .5 makes Austin into Chicha, Sane into Coutinho etc.

A lot of people talk about balance and often say things like "weak midfield" or "too heavy up top".

Surely as long as you have enough point scorers, it doesn't matter where your lesser players are. i.e. If you have a front 7 with 4 top price and 3 mid price players in it, does it matter if that is split 1-3 or 2-2 or 3-1?

Yes I remember when I doubled up once on Liverpool midfielders and people thought it was outrageous, yet doubling up on 1 Liverpool mid and 1 striker was deemed fine!

On the whole, yes you're right. Balance comes into it in terms of having a benching headache, as you need to field a defence, you might as well have someone who will get you points there and not have an expensive mid sat on the bench. Also, in terms of jumping on expensive players is very difficult if you don't have anyone at that price point in the same position, you'll need to downgrade elsewhere first and possibly miss out on price rises or incur a hit.

        agree with you
but it´s also worth noting that one should not be to obsessed by balance, a hit once in a while isn´t a big deal, as long as it is for the sake of geting in a player one must have. It is almost impossible to "cover" all price backets anyway imo, but ofc one ought to have a balance which gives you decent opportunity to swap players in the same price bracket and etc.

Tonight's Helpful Hint From The Virg.

Do you have a £4.5m and a £4m defender in your team?

Then get Naughton and Rangel. That way, you're always guaranteed a starter.

And it's a good night from me. G'night all. 🙂

If you play 3-5-2 you should play nailed 5 mid. RLC>TC

Rotating between 3-5-2 and 4-4-2 playing the fixtures. So hopefully he will nail a spot down. If not the TC thank you.

while Morata settles i feel he'll be the focal point.

Yet i don't have him! i've got Kachunga as my 4th mid and Morata up top

I don't rate him AT ALL

I've watched a lot of Chelsea over the years and in my opinion he is a terrible FPL option. He has minimal end product

He is a work horse defensively with great dribbling. His final ball and finishing is far from where it should be

Name me 1 big/important game Willian has turned up in... I'll wait

Pre-season is used for getting players match fit. Just because Willian scored a few against lower league teams doesn't mean anything

He is improving steadily each season including in terms of goals scored. No end product is harsh imo.

I agree. Still not good enough to expect returns from tough fixtures though.

I remember Chelsea dismantling City at the Etihad in Mourinho's first season back and iirc Willian was canny enough then.

        No world beater like.

The only question is him or Cescs. One of them is essential I think.

He's one of those players who's in my team because of being swayed by people on here. I haven't really put him in because I particularly fancy him as a pick. He's not 'my' pick if you understand me?

I'd like to say go with your gut but when you know you're in a big minority (looking at Triggerlips' poll) you have to wonder if you've got it wrong.

Besides the outstandingly shit bench.....I can't see a way to improve this.

    Begovic / Elliot
    Alonso / Bellerin / Trippier / Cedric / 4.0
    Kdb / Salah / Willian / Milivojevic / Carroll
    Kane / Lukaku / Quanie.

Would love a bit of little p or rooney....but not for a few weeks

what you get if you combine the worst bits of Martin Cranie and Colin Quaner. Not good 🙂

True. I have no intention of them ever being used. The idea is to down grade some of my premiums once the bandwagons emerge

Been fairly settled but have got itchy feet with Hernandez's price.. I can't see Firmino or Defoe being worth the extra now. What should I do with the 1.5m?

    Foster Myhill
    Baily Trippier Dunk Lascelles Rangel
    Sane Pogba Willian Ramsey
    Kane Jesus Firmino

    Firmino>Pea
    Lascelles>Hunemeier?
    Dunk>6.5m?

How can I improve this team?

    Foster - Elliot
    Trippier - Lindelof - Daniels - Cedric - Mee
De bruyne - Alli - Tadic - Zaha - RL Cheek
    Lukaku - Lacazette - Gayle
