Sky Sports Fantasy Football – The Overhaul

Sky Sports Fantasy Football makes a return as a regular on these pages this season and, as of this evening, our pre-season analysis of the game gets underway.

We start by plunging headfirst into the most dramatic change introduced for 2017/18. The Overhaul is a new feature that looks set to literally transform the way we approach the game.

Similar to the Fantasy Premier League wildcard, this allows us to completely revamp our squads on two occasions over the season. However, there is a key difference with the Sky Sports Overhaul, as it is restricted for use during two distinct one-week windows.

This alters the way we approach our entire initial squad selection.

Here’s why…

“The first Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 4 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 5. The second Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 28 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 29. You will be able to make unlimited transfers during those periods until the first game day deadline”

With this in mind, it makes sense that our starting XI should focus solely on the opening three Gameweeks.

Following that, the international break affords us the opportunity to revisit our team, armed with three weeks of player form and data to help us rebuild.

Prior to the season kick-off on August 11, we will be basing our player list analysis articles around the “pre-overhaul” top targets, before revisiting each position to give a “post overhaul” view on line-ups.

Beyond our initial selection, the Overhaul also has far reaching implications on our transfer policy during the season.

Overhaul Tactics

The 40 transfers at our disposal can now be broken up and distributed over three distinct window periods.

  • The three-Gameweek period from August 11 until September 9, prior to the first Overhaul.
  • The 20-Gameweek period from September 9 until February 24, prior to the second Overhaul.
  • The 11-Gameweek period from February 24 onwards, after the second Overhaul.

Prior to the first Overhaul, it looks sensible to limit transfers to the bare minimum.

The best approach here is to pick an initial squad with good fixtures and with captains available for each match day – in our forthcoming articles, we will look to help guide you with this.

Of course, form, injuries and general misfortune could combine to play their part and derail that strategy.

However, our general rule with our intial selection should be to target assured starters or “nailed on” assets. This is always important but is made all the more paramount when you are essentially picking a team for the opening three Gameweeks.

Another viable tactic would be to use one or two transfers in a bid to get off to a flying start, covering all the major captains and looking for any “two for one” scenarios that the fixture schedule can offer us.

For example, by starting the season with an Arsenal asset for Friday night’s fixture at home to Leicester, then shipping them to acquire a Manchester City player for Saturday’s trip to Brighton, offers two possible captains and the extra player for a single transfer. It can also allow you to split your Arsenal/Man City budget in one team slot.

In terms of spending transfers, the Overhaul period two looks set to be the time frame where Sky Sports managers will use the bulk of their 40 trades.

This spell covers the vast majority of the season and the busy Christmas period while some of these weeks are essentially double Gameweeks.

In the past, experienced Sky Sports managers would use transfers on extra captain days and gain from “two for one” situations as best they could. However, the need to manage 40 transfers over the course of the campaign limited this tactic to rare occasions.

The Overhaul is set to shake this up, offering us the opportunity to be thriftier with our transfers.

Indeed, if we can select a solid XI and get our defence right after the first Overhaul, then extra captains and “two for ones” should take up the bulk of our future swaps, providing we can avoid being cursed by injuries and suspensions.

The second Overhaul arrives in the international break in Gameweek 28 – February 17.

Getting to that last Overhaul with around 10 transfers remaining – thus preparing for the fixture pile-up and inevitable rotation – should be a realistic goal.

Of course, with this being a new feature, it’s difficult to gauge the tactics and impact it can have on our seasons until we have first-hand experience.

If you have some alternative strategies on the use of Overhaul, then please let us know your views in the comments.

Coming Next…

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be providing player list articles, man of the match analysis and lots more to help guide you through to the season kick-off.

    Good evening guys,

    A) Kolasinac + Gayle (or other 6.5m striker)

    B) Mee + Defoe

I'm trying to summarize all the trending Hot Topics over the last week to distill the best/most controversial advice FFS has had to offer so far. Here are my takeaways :

    - This is the season of Wingbacks, they play OoP and are worth the premium
    - Alonso probably is better than any 7.0 mid apart from Willian
    - Avoid Arsenal until things settle down
    - Pool is a roulette so might as well go for one and stick (maybe cheapest one?)
    - Lukaku and Kane are almost essential, esp. for captaincy options
    - KdB is the best, nailed on route into City attack from pre-season evidence
    - Cedric hasn't appeared yet, Bertrand might be more nailed on
    - DDG + Dawson probably has a higher upside than Foster + Bailly because WBA tend to leak a goal a game, and Bailly has no attacking threat. Matic's arrival might make Utd more solid.

This would lead to a team of :

    De Gea
    Alonso Trippier Bertrand Dawson
    KdB Willian ___
    Kane Lukaku Firmino

The 3rd mid slot can be filled with a 4.5 - 5.0 mid of your choice (Carroll/Punch/RLC)

Nothing is certain but with his ability and their lack of options at RB I'd say he's likely to be nailed by the start of the season. Targett has been playing very well in pre-season which is another thing to consider. New manger might give him a few chances which lessens the appeal of Berty, even with his cracking attack output.

If wing backs are worth the premium, why take a 4.5-5.0 mid instead of another wing back?

      1. Enzo the Baker
        • 10 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

The budget permits either a 4.5 defender or a 5.0 mid, everyone else has to be at base price. I can't think of any reasonable 4.5M wingbacks...

        1. Enzo the Baker

          6 years, 10 months ago

I know your "traditionally blah blah" comment is idle chatter but let me just post the actual reason I've shown 4 defenders - its just that we are out of budget after making the team above. The prices for the team are :

          5.5 __
          7.0 5.5 5.5 5.0 ___
          10.0 7.0 __ ___ ___
          12.5 11.5 8.5

If you are okay with a 4.0 goalie, and 2 mids at 4.5 each, your final two spots are totally 9.0 for a mid + def.

How you choose to spend that is up to you, if you can find a 4.5 wingback then good for you !

I think the 433 FFS Template is *closer* to:

      Foster Myhill
      Alonso Cedric ManU/Trippier Dawson/Daniels 4.0
      KdB William ( X ) LoftC Carroll
      Lukaku Kane (Y)

      With 14.5 - 15M for X and Y depending on ManU def.

      Anyone concerned about Firmino nailedness?

Sturridge apparently fitter than ever and Lallana singing his praises "like two new signings!".

Origi gone quiet but will likely get minutes at some point (maybe cup games).

Solanke - banging the goals in pre-season.

I see Mane and Salah as 100% nailed either side but of which striker?

Firmino's been weak so far in pre-season while Cout and Salas's both been great, still have Firmino in my team though, but that's down to good ol' coverage.

Me. I had Firmino in my team as I thought 8.5 was a great price, but for the reasons you outline above I'm wavering. Leaning towards downgrading Firmino to Defoe or similar, and upgrading a mid to Salah.

We also need to consider rotation because of Champions league, and the fact Firmino is Brazilian and therefore subject to huge long haul flights in the international breaks

As someone pointed out far more articulately than me earlier today, Pogba had no lack of goal attempts last year, indeed he had 37 shots from inside the box.

Is the problem just that he can't hit a barn door, rather than that he is being hampered by positioning and defensive duties?

    Going 433:
    DeGea

    Willian; DeBruyne; Zaha
    Kane; Austin; Lukaku
    Elliott; Hunemeier;Carroll; RLC

Walker won't be rotated initially as Mendy is still unfit.

Is anyone considering Vardy? Tough fixtures to start but he's a player who seems to do better against the top teams, when Leicester can play on the counter-attack.
Tempting me over rotation-risk Firmino and soon-to-be 35 year old Defoe...

BREAKING NEWS: Chelsea are interested in signing midfielder Danny Drinkwater from Leicester, according to Sky sources. #SSN

Would Iove to hear how replacing a £40m 29 year old with a 2 game wonder benefits anyone.

I doubt he is in the Leicester first team at the moment... seems pretty unlikely. Iborra and Ndidi seems like it might be on the table.

Although... reuniting the Kante/Drinky dream team would be nice.

Is Ritchie fit to start the season? Not sure why Cork is on there ahead of Carroll but I'm sure you have your reasons. Defence is too pricey unless your going 4-3-3

cheers, Not sure about redmond or tadic tbh. redmond seems safer option in terms of output last year.

Redmond played up front some of last year. I don't think that will happen this season which might dampen his output.

Tadic was muted last season but the one before he did much better. Higher ceiling I think

The only mid I really like is KDB

      Alli/Eriksen and Cout/Salah next

No one else really doing it for me
