Sky Sports Fantasy Football – The Overhaul

Sky Sports Fantasy Football makes a return as a regular on these pages this season and, as of this evening, our pre-season analysis of the game gets underway.

We start by plunging headfirst into the most dramatic change introduced for 2017/18. The Overhaul is a new feature that looks set to literally transform the way we approach the game.

Similar to the Fantasy Premier League wildcard, this allows us to completely revamp our squads on two occasions over the season. However, there is a key difference with the Sky Sports Overhaul, as it is restricted for use during two distinct one-week windows.

This alters the way we approach our entire initial squad selection.

Here’s why…

“The first Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 4 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 5. The second Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 28 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 29. You will be able to make unlimited transfers during those periods until the first game day deadline”

With this in mind, it makes sense that our starting XI should focus solely on the opening three Gameweeks.

Following that, the international break affords us the opportunity to revisit our team, armed with three weeks of player form and data to help us rebuild.

Prior to the season kick-off on August 11, we will be basing our player list analysis articles around the “pre-overhaul” top targets, before revisiting each position to give a “post overhaul” view on line-ups.

Beyond our initial selection, the Overhaul also has far reaching implications on our transfer policy during the season.

Overhaul Tactics

The 40 transfers at our disposal can now be broken up and distributed over three distinct window periods.

  • The three-Gameweek period from August 11 until September 9, prior to the first Overhaul.
  • The 20-Gameweek period from September 9 until February 24, prior to the second Overhaul.
  • The 11-Gameweek period from February 24 onwards, after the second Overhaul.

Prior to the first Overhaul, it looks sensible to limit transfers to the bare minimum.

The best approach here is to pick an initial squad with good fixtures and with captains available for each match day – in our forthcoming articles, we will look to help guide you with this.

Of course, form, injuries and general misfortune could combine to play their part and derail that strategy.

However, our general rule with our intial selection should be to target assured starters or “nailed on” assets. This is always important but is made all the more paramount when you are essentially picking a team for the opening three Gameweeks.

Another viable tactic would be to use one or two transfers in a bid to get off to a flying start, covering all the major captains and looking for any “two for one” scenarios that the fixture schedule can offer us.

For example, by starting the season with an Arsenal asset for Friday night’s fixture at home to Leicester, then shipping them to acquire a Manchester City player for Saturday’s trip to Brighton, offers two possible captains and the extra player for a single transfer. It can also allow you to split your Arsenal/Man City budget in one team slot.

In terms of spending transfers, the Overhaul period two looks set to be the time frame where Sky Sports managers will use the bulk of their 40 trades.

This spell covers the vast majority of the season and the busy Christmas period while some of these weeks are essentially double Gameweeks.

In the past, experienced Sky Sports managers would use transfers on extra captain days and gain from “two for one” situations as best they could. However, the need to manage 40 transfers over the course of the campaign limited this tactic to rare occasions.

The Overhaul is set to shake this up, offering us the opportunity to be thriftier with our transfers.

Indeed, if we can select a solid XI and get our defence right after the first Overhaul, then extra captains and “two for ones” should take up the bulk of our future swaps, providing we can avoid being cursed by injuries and suspensions.

The second Overhaul arrives in the international break in Gameweek 28 – February 17.

Getting to that last Overhaul with around 10 transfers remaining – thus preparing for the fixture pile-up and inevitable rotation – should be a realistic goal.

Of course, with this being a new feature, it’s difficult to gauge the tactics and impact it can have on our seasons until we have first-hand experience.

If you have some alternative strategies on the use of Overhaul, then please let us know your views in the comments.

Why has Chelsea sold Matic to Man U? Chelsea are going to have such a torrid season, its going to hit them like a brick wall this season when they realise Morata isnt good neough and that when they get injuries and multiples competitions they are screwed. If they get any silverware this season its a miracle Leicester style

dunno but Man U need Matic more then Cheslea need 40 mill imo. Some Italian clubs were interested in him, sell him for 30mil to serie A is better than 40mil to Man U who need him

It's because Chelsea try not to treat players as commodities. If a player has given good service and wants a move to another club they will generally let them go, as long as the price is fair.

Matic is 29 tomorrow. 40m is top dollar for him really. United have paid a premium because they need him.

The surprise isn't the sale of Matic, it's the sale of Chalobah. He could have been useful cover in CM, especially as van Ginkel has been loaned to PSV again and RLC has gone to Palace. Any injury to Kante or Bakayoko and Chelsea are in trouble. The squad is terribly thin.

I never understand why a club sells a player to their immediate rivals when it will so obviously strengthen them. £40m isn't even that much in today's insane market.

They bought Tiemoue Bakayoko, so Matic became surplus to requirements. Matic often got rotated with Cesc anyway, Kante being the best DM.

      Valencia > Trippier
      Bertrand>Yoshida
      Salah > Zaha
      Defoe > Lukaku
Is what I would do. You'd still have enough invested in defense but with 3-5-2 you want two heavy-hitting forwards for sure. It'd be nice to keep Salah but if you're going to invest so much in defense, something else has to give. I'd rather give up salah than lukaku but who am I to say. I'll probably be proven wrong within the first gameweek

I'm seeing Kolasinac in a lot of teams despite him being quite average in preseason so far (i know pre-season isn't the be all and end all...) but very few teams with Koscielny who played a full game today. Is no-one going for Kos?

I think people are picking him for attacking returns over clean sheet potential. A LWB in a Wenger side is essentially a midfielder, he'll have a lot of licence to go forward.

Taken from the pre season guide.

      In Conclusion

With a very favourable run of fixtures to kick start their season – including three home matches in the first four (SWA WHU hud WAT), interest in Southampton is understandably high.

As the numbers suggest, they were a little unfortunate to struggle for consistency under Puel, with injuries to both Austin and Van Dijk instrumental in the Frenchman’s summer departure.

Up top, Austin was simply irreplaceable. Involved in 77.8% of his side’s goals when on the pitch, his average of 156.5 minutes per goal was almost identical to Chelsea’s Diego Costa (154.5).

Restricted to just 22 appearances over the last two seasons due to injury, the question is whether Pellegrino can afford to rely on him.

Tactics could also play in Austin’s potential pitch time – the new manager mainly prefers a high pressing approach and the striker lacks the mobility to carry that out.

Gabbiadini, meanwhile, has never been prolific – indeed, he has scored more than 10 goals in a season just once in his career. He certainly offers more movement up top than Austin and the numbers suggest he could yet make an impact if he can up that conversion rate.

Is a Mhki or Pogba double up with Lukaku just a trap that's too tempting

The positive is the fixture and possible value -
Negative from a Mhki ( who produced nothing from an FPL perspective last year) or Pogba still playing deep and can't even in latest match stop hitting the woodwork.)

    1. AriseSirGiggsy

If I was picking the team Mhky would be in, but I his stsrt isn't assured... many options available

Yeah I would go with Mhki if I was but he is less nailed than Pogba.

Overall worth risking it on either of them or not?

I don't find it tempting at all. Much better options at 7m. Knowing the way Yanited play, wouldn't double up in attack.

That's my point it's the lack of attacking out put last year versus fixtures for start of the season.
Lukaku will get more goals but enough to compensate for threat from the midfield and Mou shut up shop tactics - I don't think so either.

who will score more points over the first 6 gameweeks, Pogba or Alonso?

    1. Sterling is £11Mill..…
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Alonso just due to CS's tbh. Pogba could match his atatck or exceed it but with added cs Alonso wins for sure. Pogba might need to score or assist every game to match him potentially

          • 7 Years

true, still think Alonso edges it though. All Alonso has to do is get one cs and Pogba needs to get a goal, something which didnt happen much last season. And if Alonso scores as well then Pogba is screwed

          1. polis
            • 12 Years
            6 years, 10 months ago

How do you work this out?

Alonso clean sheet = 6 pts.

Pogba clean sheet + assist = 6 pts. Doesn't need to score.

Granted if Alonso scores but given fixtures I'd favour Pogba to ping one in the onion bag. Especially with Matic now in the team.
