The Numbers Game – Swansea City

Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Dunno. Further to what I said before, all defenders have had 180 minutes on the pitch . Except Declan Rice, 210.

Arguably the best defences this season will be United, Chelsea, Spurs and Southampton, which do you think is the most cost effective (/highest scoring) from each?

    Spurs:
Trippier gives us an easy way in here, not really a discussion there.

    Chelsea:
Alonso the best option purely for attacking purposes but does Cahills Terry-esque knack for set piece goals or Azpil as a bonus machine (whilst maybe getting the odd game at wing back with Rudiger brought in) warrant that 0.5 to be spent elsewhere? Furthermore does Luiz at 1.0 cheaper give enough coverage with maybe the odd goal thrown in to warrant him over the rest?

    Southampton:
Bertrand is obviously the preferable option with attaching output before we know if Cedric will start GW1, but Yoshida also has a knack for the odd goal and bonus points, or do you go fire and forget with Forster at 5.0 with a slight lack of 4.5 GK options?

    United:
Personally after the Jones news I don't think we can read into pre season as to the starting centre backs. It seems clear Mourinho has been playing Lindelof and Smalling together knowing they'll have to play the first UCL game (and super cup) together so it wouldn't surprise me to see Bailly and Lindelof start GW1, so with Valencia seeming slightly overpriced is Bailly worth the outlay? Do you punt on Lindelof with the assumption Mourinho will give him league games to settle rather than throwing him into the Champions League? Is De Gea even 100% safe in the league or could Romero get a pre UCL game?

Apologies if the post is too long but thought it might summarise some of the discussions I've seen on here! Cheers!!

That's pretty much my defence currently, but can't help thinking, for example, having Luiz could mean Bertrand and Bailly (with a 4.5 GK instead of De Gea) which could arguably be more nailed on?

You're saving a bit of money by going that route so it depends what you can do with the extra cash. That's if you have faith in Luiz or Bailly to get you consistent CS point returns because let's face it they aren't exactly attacking merchants

      All good observations.
      I'm starting to edge towards...
      DDG
      Kolasinac Bailly Trip Yoshi
      in a 433 probably
I'm a bit concerned about Chelsea defenders, conte may not have confidence in Alonso if he's been looking for a new LB (sandro) and Rudiger could upset things, maybe for Cahill!

      1. Big4FPL
        • 9 Years

Kolasinac is a good shout to throw into the mix if Arsenal can sort their defence as well, think I'd be all over him more if Arsenal had signed Rudiger to give them a solid back 3! I agree over Alonso which is why Azpil is so tempting, given he's just an all round reliable defender that I can't imagine being dropped! Cahill I think will be okay given he's captain, I could be wrong though!

I am seriously considering Yoshida instead of Cedric..possibly Pied, if Cedric isn't fit in time, some talk he could start.

At Chelsea, it's hard to ignore Alonso, even with the hefty price tag. He is set to start in my back 5 and with any luck it's a set and forget for the entire season.

Trippier still has me worried, I drafted him because so many others did. Not sure Spurs will taste 17 CS at Wembley like they did last year, which means now I must require on Trippier scoring and assisting. Money might he spent better elsewhere.

United, I am running out Valencia and considering doubling up with Bailly. Valencia was a bit of a risk near the end of the season, but he can do it all, get forward, score, assist and defense.

      1. Big4FPL
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

It's a shame Pied isn't nailed on as a 4.5 Southampton defender would mean Bailly + Pied over Lindelof + Yoshida for a SOT MUFC double! But I'm with you in that I currently have Yoshida over Cedric.

If there hadn't been the rumours of Sandro combined with Moses briefly being trialled there (and Azpil previously playing left back) I wouldn't be doubting Alonso as he's currently in my team, I guess it's just the possibility that you're forking out 7.0 for a defender that gets benched (even though I do think it's unlikely)

I wish I could find the cash for Valencia as I agree with you I don't think he'll be rotated, he was rotated last season when the top 4 was no longer achievable so saved for the Europa. My only concern is as a United fan his days of firing crosses constantly seem to be over, he's a lot more conservative with playing a final ball

Has to. Pogba is 100% nailed and Matic must give him more freedom to get forward. It doesn't make Pogba become Sanchez suddenly but it does make him an option for sure at 8.0. Until now I was all against the Pogba pick but now he might be value. I'd expect him to do better returns than the likes of Ramsey and Willian or Ozil now.

Currently mulling over what the best pricing structure is to use for my squad.
The relative strength in the striker pool (both premium and mid priced), the number of attractive defensive options, and the apparent dearth so far of midfielders in the 5-6m bracket, is swaying me towards a 4-3-3 formation.
Within that, there appears to be a number of options at certain price points: midfielders at 7.0m, strikers at 10-11.5m, and all the goalkeepers between 4.5 and 5.5m.
Therefore, of the options below, which do you feel gives me the best squad balance?

    A

    4.5, 4.0
    6.0, 5.5, 5.5, 4.5, 4.5
    10.0, 7.0, 7.0, 4.5, 4.5
    12.5, 11.5, 8.5
    0.0ITB

    B

    5.5, 4.0
    6.0, 5.5, 5.5, 4.5, 4.5
    9.5, 9.0, 7.0, 4.5, 4.5
    11.5, 10.5, 6.5

You see, I've been thinking, and apart from Defoe/Firmino/Benteke there aren't any mid price strikers that come without caveats - and even with Firmino arguably Pool mids are better. I've been considering going 2 at the front to begin with (two premiums) and waiting to see which mid price striker stands out. And I disagree that there aren't many mids in the 5-6 bracket. JWP had 40% goal involvement last year when he played and those fixtures...

I think you're right, so the 6.5 striker in option b could become Defoe or Benteke 🙂 The fixtures are great for Soton, I remember JWP being talked about before the DGW's at the back end of last season though and he did nothing at all. Just gone with Bertrand at the moment from them.

Possibly, Boufal will be competing more you'd think. But someone's got to start. This is my view on Liverpool that some of them will have to start so maybe not avoid altogether.

I am starting with Tadic, hopefully the forward position is nailed, regardless of who it is. Both Gabby and Austin have scored this preseason, but I like Tadic in the 10 role or possibly playing aside Boufal. With those first 11 fixtures it's difficult to ignore.

Ah it's not a player, but the formation. Still planning on starting with a 5-3-2, so I feel it's going to be feast or famine in the early weeks. Now the decision is how do I want to start my midfield with strong 7, 8, 9m midfielders or with a 9 and 6.5m and rotate a 6m midfielder in that third position.

Is it me, or do more put value in a poor pre-season performance rather than an outstanding performance? In my estimation, I have noticed that players who don't do well in these early match seem to worry managers (see Lindelof) rather than a player (Ince, for example) who has played well. How much does their pre-season play hedge your decisions?

Pre season is a good indication of how a player may be gelling in new team e.g ince and salah.

However it's just about getting fit for the new season.

If a player is doing well pre season the chances are they will continue the form into the new season

With Matic leaving Chelsea it surely will affect Che style of play seen last season.
Matic was a defensive shield in from of the defenders. Unless Conte gets the same quality I feel Che will struggle with getting CS.
Will Willan or Fabregas also loose value as no one can replace Matic CDM quality.
Is avoiding CHE to start with the prudent choice
    Thoughts?

Alonso is a must have imo. Plays so high up and gets in the box plenty

While I wasn't to pleased to hear of their poor play against Inter, I still feel Alonso is a set and forget defender. Still have in slotted in GW1. Also have Willian, but right now he's just going to play GW1 and will be rotated. I am sure their defense will be solid, not putting much into these pre-season kicks

Tried something a little different - appreciate any feedback.

    DDG

    Kolasinac - Trippier - Yoshida - Pied

    KDB - Zaha - Willian

    Kane - Lukaku - Vardy

    Subs: Elliott, Rosenior, Carroll, Cork

Appreciate that Pied is a short-term option but would switch him out once Cedric returns. Few of the budget strikers fill me with any confidence - Vardy could be a great differential with only 3.5% ownership?

    A) Kolasinac, Kompany, Zaha
    B) Trippier, Danilo/Stones, Pogba

    Cheers

Indeed. But Foster is too important to my team to muck about with Dawson.

Following on from some Jrod chatter above, why does a player being injury prone matter in FPL, like really, why??

Oh no you have to transfer him out, it might mess up plans but that's going to happen regardless, I suppose one argument is "It minimizes the potential risk to plans by not going with an injury prone player". The only potential issue is if you have a couple of crooks in your team, but even then there's ways round it with a strong squad.

The way I see it this can help if you're a top manager, you then need to rejig your plans, it's not like there's no options??

I challenge someone to convince me why I shouldn't have an injury prone player based on being injury prone alone.

No reason. Stick Sturridge in immediately.

THIS IS DIFFERENT LAD! He's a rotation risk... Different things, duh.

          Whack Lamela in then.

He said injury prone alone though. Sturridge just isn't going to get any gametime regardless of fitness.

In one game? You get a blank from him/her. That stuff happens.

i have experienced quite a few 1 pter from aguero(c).

and yellow flagged andy carroll in which you are always guessing whether he will play or not

Ok, but you still go for him as he's a good option. Would you avoid Aguero for a whole season though?

Big AC was never fully fit, I think this is key. Jrod has been fit for a good few months now, I think that's something important I left out. A player returning from injury is a different proposition altogether.

aguero is an exception that he is worth the risk due to his goal record and literally there is no1 better than him for most periods. most will captain him either way and will have to waste transfers.

for the case of AC, there are other alternatives available, so i would rather choose someone else knowing that he is a transfer in waiting.

Jeez, don't remind me of Carroll. Benched him for so many weeks late last season. Destroyed me though with that 6m lying on the bench and Bilic spouting nonsense every week about how close to fitness he was.

OK. Those sticking in Chicharito in their squads: He will, at best have 90 minutes, against Manchester City, pre-Season. He is not being risked tonight.

    My advice? Ditch him.

Same. Also knowing West Ham's history with Striker's he'll be put in the squad too quick get injured and be out for 6 weeks which turns into 3 months then come back again around January play a few games, get injured again and then maybe a couple of games at the end of the season too. Bookmark this, I hope I'm wrong though.

It's a shame as I've had him in my team in the hope that West Ham will score in their first 3 and if they do he's likely to be involved (Alternatively Lanzini), but as you say I'm now considering dropping him. Thinking Mounie instead but with 1.0 in the bank to then make the swap or do Aguero to Kane

If you Jesus instead of Kane it really opens up some nice options. A squad with KDB, Eriksen, Mané, Lukaku and Jesus provides some lovely captaincy options and the defence isn't that bad.

I have Aguero right now and am considering Jesus to use the extra 1m. That 1m goes a long way in defense.
