The ScoutCast – Episode 230 – Harried

Two Gameweeks down and already the dilemmas are building; the siren song of the Wildcard button is calling.

Failing big hitters are the major bone of contention as Jonty, Andy and Luke join me for the second ScoutCast of the season.

We give our verdicts on Spurs talisman Harry Kane, while also assessing the fall-out from Manchester City and, in particular, the shot-shy Kevin De Bruyne.

Driven by another round of community questions, we also chew over The Pogba vs Mkhitaryan debate and the big Bournemouth bail out, before previewing Gameweek 3.

Oh, and after his ten point return on the Aaron Mooy investment, we wrestle to prevent Jonty dropping his name into the conversation at every opportunity. I think I counted two. That’s a win for everyone involved.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Still can't decide on my WC team, it basically boils which is the most essential:
    a. Alonso and a cheap forward or
    b. Firmino and a cheap defence

For me, I'd want my third forward to be at least 7.0m, that way it's an easy downgrade to the form budget striker, difficult to go cheaper then need to find money later one.

He's looked very good and could nail down a spot as Koeman's not afraid of giving young players a chance and he has speed which the squad is lacking. Still a rotation risk unfortunately

    Quick question FFS peeps

I've had a shocker of a start to this season's campaign and will definitely wildcard during the international break.

I have already used my free transfer this week to bring in Pogba (late to that party), but do you reckon it's worth a hit (-4) to remove Richie (who I am already losing patience with) to bring in Richarlison ... or hang fire?

    Thanks in advance.

    Is Kane that essential ?

He scored 7 goals in the final two games of last season. So before that he was "only" at 22 (less than Lukaku and only two more than Aguero). He plays in a team that will lose most games against top oppositions. Do you want your more expensive striker to play in a team that will mostly score less goals than the opposite side when it comes down to big Premier League clashes ? (for example against Chelsea last week).

I don't say it's a bad idea to own him or that you should get rid if you have him. Actually I just brought him in on my WC. But I didn't brought him in thinking of him as a season keeper but mostly because of the great fixtures coming. I think that with Aguero, Lukaku and Morata playing on top teams and costing 1m less or 2.5m less, you can go without him and upgrade other areas. Even Firmino can be a good pick and you save 4m doing that, that's huge.

    What are your thoughts ?

I think there comes a point where 12.5 is too much to keep faith in a player when he's not putting up the actual points, but that hasn't came yet. I am more intrigued to see how Spurs will do attacking as a team this year, which as you said it if they aren't firing then there's many sensible options for cheap.

I believe he's not essential, but it has more to do with the other great premium options and the fact that I think his goal conversion rate will regress.

    5. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

He's had 14 attempts in 2 weeks (11 in the box!) & somehow managed to blank... think it's a genuine case of being unlucky & provided he avoids injury, the law of averages will catch up soon. At this rate he should definitely score v Burnley, hopefully a brace, possibly even a hattrick to balance things out

      1. Turbolag
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

The law of averages isn't real. Shots are simply an indicator of past scoring potential that you hope carries over to the future.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

If he had only 1 or 2 shots, that would be genuine cause for concern. He could still easily be on 50 or 60 points from the first 6 games

          1. Turbolag
            • 7 Years
            6 years, 9 months ago

Sure, but in reality he only got 2. I want to dispel this "law of averages" nonsense and say that his performance by any metric over the first 2 weeks shouldn't affect your expectations for this week.

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years
              6 years, 9 months ago

You're contradicting yourself - by basing your expectations for his performance this year to regress from last year & simultaneously saying past performances should not influence future expectations... I believe his goal conversion rate will progress from his GW1-2 performances. It may not come in GW3, but combined with the fixture, it's likely to come in GW3.

              1. Turbolag
                • 7 Years
                6 years, 9 months ago

"Regress" was admittedly the wrong word to use. I suppose what I meant was "After examining the data, I predict that Kane's conversion rate this year will be lower than his conversion rate last year."

                  • 14 Years
                  6 years, 9 months ago

But the irony was that you actually refer to the law of averages bringing Kane's goal conversion down last year & then say you want to dispel it as nonsense in bringing his goal conversion up from GW1/2. Totally agree he is not guaranteed to score v Burnley in a one off game, but totally disagree that he is not likely to score v Burnley given his stats in GW1/2

                  1. Turbolag
                    • 7 Years
                    6 years, 9 months ago

What? When did I use the law of averages in my arguments about Kane? As I said above I'm not saying that I expect anything to average out. I did my research, and my prediction for his conversion rate came out lower than his conversion rate last year. The faulty "law of averages" logic was not involved in that conclusion.

I also never said that he was not likely to score against Burnley, just that his performances in weeks 1 and 2 do no make him more likely to score than if this was the first match of the season.

                    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
                      • 14 Years
                      6 years, 9 months ago

By saying you expect Kane's goal conversion to regress... where will it regress from? Above the mean, where will it regress to... towards the mean

                      1. Turbolag
                        • 7 Years

Once again, "regress" was the wrong word to use. I only used it because it is commonly (incorrectly) used in that sense, and I it was much faster than typing out the more correct version above.

              • 9 Years

Why is the law of averages nonsense? It doesn't mean you'll get lucky. It just means if you get in the right positions and keep taking shots, your skill level will ensure you will get your fair share of points. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. There is always a certain percentage of shots you take that will work. That is the law of averages. Yes, it doesn't apply to one week in isolation but it can be a fairly accurate when you look at a few weeks grouped together.

              1. Turbolag
                • 7 Years
                6 years, 9 months ago

Usually, the law averages is used to say "If an event has happened less often than expected in the past, it will happen more often than expected in the future, thereby making the average frequency of occurrence match the expected frequency."

This is mathematically incorrect. Consider the classic example of flipping a coin. If I flip a coin 5 times and it comes up heads every time, the law of averages would say that it would be more likely to come up tails if I flipped it again in order to bring the average frequency of tails closer to 50%, which is obviously incorrect.

In FPL terms, the law of averages would say that because Kane scored less often than one would expect in the past two weeks, he will score more than we expect in the future so that his scoring output matches the expect value.

I don't think anyone meant it that way. They merely mean in terms of shots, if he's getting so many chances, he's that good a player, that he will likely put away a few chances. He has scored 21, 25 and 29 goals in the last three years, so there is no real reason to believe he'll suddenly go through a 10 game barren spell. It may happen, for sure, but with his attempts at goal, I'd rather err on the side of having him in my team than not.

But coin tosses are random! Strikers are more likely to score the more chances their team generates for them & the more shots on goal they have... the statistics in GW1/2 indicate that Spurs are generating high amounts of chances for Kane, which makes him more likely to score....

Add the word "random" into the first sentence about law of averages, it makes a big difference

Right, I'm making this argument in the context of goal conversion rate, which is the ratio of goals to shots. When a player takes a shot, there is a certain probability that it goes in. That's where the element of randomness comes in. The shots do give him more chances, I'm not arguing that at all. What I'm saying is that the fact that he was "unlucky" by not scoring on the ridiculous number of shots he took in the first two weeks does not mean he should be "lucky" (be more likely to score on a given shot than expected) in the future. It's up to you to decide what that expected likelihood is.

Put simply, if Kane keeps taking shots as frequently as he has been doing in the first two games for the rest of the season he will probably be the top scorer in the league again.

For owners of Kane & Kaku... which are you captaining? Leaning towards Kane, maybe foolishly, as Lukaku could be safer option?

Kane, stats and hopefully a chance to gain on Kaku captainers

I wouldn't consider Lukaku the safe option. Kane's stats are much better in every department but the final product. This is his week to finally capitalize, and was the only reason I included him in my GW1 squad.

Utd very free scoring is the only reason i think Kaku may be more dangerous... but I'm also 95% going with Kane for captaincy

Take a look at who United played. Mou is definitely not a manager who will want to be a free-scoring team in bigger games.

Yeah but Leicester conceded 3 to a worse arsenal attack than Utd's, I can see Leicester conceding at least another 2 or 3, maybe 4 if Pogba/Mkhi/Rashford/Kaku have their shooting boots on

There comes a time where you have to captain your 12.5 striker. If you aren't going to do it at home to Burnley then you probably shouldn't have a 12.5 forward like Kane. I captained Lukaku for the first 2, captaining Kane this weekend, hope he breaks the August Blues!!

“When the game is in the last 15 or 20 minutes, the opponent is tired and we’ve moved them during the game, we can put into the game dynamic players like Bernardo Silva, Raz (Sterling) or Sane. In another game maybe it’s Sergio (Aguero) or Gabriel (Jesus). So it’s a point where we can win games in the last minutes.”

Good luck dealing with that. He may outscore Kane this week, but be wary of offering such advice, given one is 100% nailed and the other is not.

Given the fixtures this week, which two would you play and what order would you put the remaining two in on the bench:
    A) Schindler (Huddersfield play Southampton at home and Saints haven't been too good in front of goal recently)
    B) Loftus-Cheek (Palace play Swansea at home)
    C) Carroll (Palace away, obviously)
    D) Ritchie (plays WHU at home)

I am between Schindler for the potential CS followed by RLC or Ritchie for the, less likely, attacking return and then Carroll last based purely on the fact he has an away fixture and Swansea's form isn't great. Bench would be the remaining player who plays at home with Carroll second.

    Any help?

For me it would be RLC simply because he's looked quite decent and he's playing as a winger. For me, when it comes to cheap players and decisions like this, always play an attacker.

Along with RLC I'd play Ritchie, set pieces and corners, never know when he'll play a hand in a goal.

That's actually who I have put in. I am still tempted by RLC to Schindler though as they have been solid at the back and they're at home. If I choose RLC he will blank and Huddersfield will keep a clean sheet. If I choose Schindler, he will concede and RLC will score. I hate this game.

I could wait till next round and do firm + jesus --> kane + chicha or jesus + RLC --> sanchez + quaner and do lukaku kane on a ft the next window, but then ill potentially loose out on a lot of points by not captaining Kane. Waiting will give me more time to monitor the plans, but getting kane now could give me a massive point haul. Im loosing my mind

Personally I like Salah better. His movement is very good for FPL imo. I don't think you could go wrong with either though.

Right now yes, and could possibly be in the future if he keeps his form. The WBA back line isn't the youngest.

Who else is thinking of bringing Sigurdsson in now? If KDB blanks this week, I will have no choice but to sell him. Not only will he not have paid me back for 10m, he will drop in value. Sigurdsson has 3 tough matches (Chelsea, Spurs and United) but really, Chelsea don't look great at the moment. He is also 8.4m but after the wonder goal tonight, he is picking up momentum.
