The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Sunday

This was meant to be the day that would see talent from the north London clubs cause tremors in the Fantasy Premier League ranks and market place. Instead, both Spurs and Arsenal fell flat – to varying degrees of disaster.

Harry Kane had the opportunity to transform the Fantasy Football landscape. Not only could he have buried the August goal hoodoo, but he could also have delivered points for the 16.1% who captained him to capitalise on the failings of others – including Romelu Lukaku’s zero point score.

Once again he blanked. Once again the numbers he produced defied belief.

Kane had ten attempts on goal, seven from inside the box. For the second match running, he has surpassed his personal record for the number of shots in a single Premier League match without scoring.

This season Kane has fired just 25% of his efforts on target with a zero conversion rate. His rates for both in 2016/17 were 52% and 26% respectively.

According to certain statistical models, he should have 2.5 goals by now. But he hasn’t. He’s got nothing, and he’s being ushered out of FPL squads at a pace.

To compound matters, both Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool provided goal and assist returns with maximum bonus to overtake Lukaku in the forward standings.

They provide an obvious exit route for those left feeling decidedly uneasy about Kane’s extraordinary three-match drought.

Dismissing talk of the August “curse”, there is perhaps another reason behind this sorry spell: maybe Spurs really are destined to struggle at Wembley.

We have just two “home” matches to go on – the first against the champions Chelsea, while it should also be noted that Spurs only edged out Burnley 2-1 at White Hart Lane last season.

However, there is building momentum behind the theory that Mauricio Pochettino’s men could lack intensity and that sides will raise their game on visiting Wembley.

With Swansea City and Bournemouth the next two opponents due to arrive, we will surely have more evidence soon. Falter against that pair, and our confidence in Kane and Spurs’ other key assets – Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli – will plummet.

While it’s a testing trip to Everton to come next, those forthcoming home fixtures, coupled with the unfeasible and record-breaking numbers – may convince many Kane owners to sit on their hands, even when faced with cheaper and more profitable temptations.

Spurs toiled, but their suffering pales in significance next to the cataclysmic display delivered by Arsenal at Anfield.

Like Kane, Alexis Sanchez had the opportunity to put Fantasy managers in a spin. Instead, he played a 60-minute role in a farcical Gunners performance which may actually transpire to be his last for the club.

It remains to be seen if Sanchez stays in the Premier League to be a factor in our season. For now, he played his part in making Liverpool’s attacking assets seem irresistible, as the aforementioned Firmino pulled the strings for both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to step up with further hauls.

It appears that there is still one thing we can all rely on as Fantasy managers: Liverpool will present us with the dilemma of putting many attacking eggs in a single basket.

With Kane – our most bankable scorer currently defying all odds to misfire – perhaps we should just embrace that “problem”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ozil is the epitome of Arsenals issues. Guy doesn't have to turn up and still gets played no matter what. Wenger has his favs and thats that. Does not promote healthy compeition.

Sell Sanchez, Ox and Mustafi. Play 3-4-3:

      Cech
      Holding Kos Monreal
      Bellerin Xhaka Elneny Kola
      Ozil Lacazette
      Giroud

Personally think Arsenal should have signed Siggy. Would have been a perfect supply man for Giroud and would have given them a Plan B in games. Lacazette can run in behind so they still have stretch threat and can work Plan A.

Gary Neville really is getting tiresome the way he attacks Arsenal.

He was talking today like Arsenal have been relegation material for the last decade rather than a top four team. I think Wenger is probably well aware that he plays more attacking football than defensive football (along with Liverpool) and pay the price for that at times....but the truth is I'd sooner have watched Arsenal these past five years than his dull as dishwater (at times) United team who really haven't been any great shakes either.

Having said that...what we saw today looked something different to the norm....it looked for all the world like a team with big dressing room problems...they really didn't care today.

    Just rubbish.

There are massive issues throughout the club. From the board to the manager to the players. And it's been that way for several years and I can't see it changing any time soon. Sad times.

I don't think the issues have been as "massive" as Arsenal fans make out...not by a long way...

They've been one if the most consistent clubs in the league without actually winning it....but playing some of the best football at times....very similar to Liverpool. The difference is though that Pool fans don't beat themselves up over it.

Today looked like something different though...

Got to disagree. Neville was talking about a decline in Arsenal. That has definitely happened. What we have seen is Wenger does not have an eye for a defender. He inherited a great defence in 1997 then got lucky that Sol Campbell was willing to move to Arsenal from Spurs.

Arsenal may have dressing room problems, but the biggest problem is the tone from Wenger and the execs. How is it acceptable for Xhaka, Ramsey and Ozil to not perform their defensive duties away from home at Anfield? What is their punishment? Nothing. Wenger has let mediocrity in standards (e.g. effort, responsibility, accountability, team spirit) permeate through the club.

People have a go at Pulis and Allardyce, but they get the best from their players. Wenger has let his players off the hook defensively.

Ozil is singled out (perhaps a little unfairly), but what is his output? His set pieces have been poor, he isn't picking out killer passes or putting in defensive effort. He does run around, but it is not effective running. Give me Eriksen or Siggy any day over him.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 11 Years

Never in a million years would I want Pulus or Allardyce football over what Wenger tries to do...even if he fails.

The thing that shows the mediocrity in standards at Arsenal is

        i) the fact that Ox thinks he is so good he can go and get into Liverpool or Chelsea's midfield. That guy is deluded.
ii) Welbeck is playing and he is a striker who barely scores (worse than Gabbi)
iii) Ramsey is seen as a good player, but he has done nothing apart from have one hot season in the last five years.

Or Arsenal might remain in free fall and lose/draw against Bournemouth.

Lukaku possibly off pens now and I'm determined not to miss out on Kane's first and FAR overdue haul. He's a season keeper for me despite slow start. Later in the season with Ibra coming back in and Pogba/Mkhi/Rashford scoring so much themselves, I decided to get rid. Yes, his ownership frightens me as of now but one Kane haul/Lukaku blank and that ownership will come down while my ranking goes up. At least that's the plan.

          Time to roll the dice.

Repost (got stuck on bottom of page)

Thoughts on keeping Abraham? I will start him if I keep him since Newcastle at home is a good fixture. Finally got his first PL goal after missing a great opportunity in each of his first two games, so that's good for his confidence.

Unfortunately, Llorente should be back after the break, unless he goes to Chelsea, and Swansea are rumored to be buying back Bony from City. Not sure how the presence of these players will affect Abraham's starting place, since Ayew could also potentially be dropped

Think now is when we need to be making a serious decision on whether or not to stick with Kane or jump ship.

Lots of factors to consider, what are everyone's thoughts?

Key thing for me is that his stick isn't going to be rising any time soon, so if he is sold now and drops in price, it will make him easier to buy back later on (especially on a WC which I intend to use over the next international break) if he proves 'essential'.

He's had great fixtures already though and hasn't delivered. Granted, his stats are phenomenal, but it looks like it may genuinely be true that it takes him some time to find his feet.

Last season I believe he only managed 3 goals in September after a goalless August. I'm not sure if that would be sufficient given his price.

He could well get 3 goals in the next game though, which is the risk in dropping him.

Nope, no serious decision needed. Chill out, golden boot winner for 2 years in a row for a reason...

        Slightly narrow minded approach imo.

I'm not talking about getting rid for good, just until he finds his form. He's not going to win the golden boot if he doesn't find his previous form.

Plus he isn't worth his price tag, can use those funds elsewhere to maximise points.

He is worth the money too, just be patient.

Only if you captain him week in, week out.

Wembley factor makes me doubt if I'd be willing to do that with other options available.

Why must I captain him each week? I have Firmino, Lukaku and Salah who are just as worthy captains.

I just don't see who would take his place that has such potential... Gotta ride the rough with the smooth really.

Don't have the time to get into the depths of it right now but it's to do with how many points you need from each 0.5m in order to achieve a good score.

Kane won't reach the adequate number of points unless you make his points work for you more by captaining him most, or all weeks, ensuring you always benefit from the hauls.

It doesn't sound like good maths but the numbers are there if you look into it (check Ruth's posts).

Chances are you're better off going with an alternative like Morata and using the remaining funds to upgrade other players who are performing under their points requirement.

Meh. It's a game and it sounds like you think about it too much.

                  Kane for president and captain.

Same boat. I'm hugely biased towards TV at the start - a Morata increase means a 0.2 swing which is tempting me.

As you say, if he starts banging them then possible to bring him back for cheaper.

However I'll be really annoyed at missing his hat trick next week after these 3 blanks.

    A) kolasinac --> alonso
    B) kolasinac & mounie --> naughton & morata (-4)
    C) mounie --> firmino (have salah)

Im with you on the no Lukaku. Would rather Morata. But with the highest own player in the game it's way too much of a risk, not having him!!

Of course. But he's likely off pens now and as scared as I am of his ownership if Kane FINALLY comes on and Lukaku underperforms that ownership will drop while my TV and rankings will skyrocket. It's a total risk but these first three weeks have been really unlucky for me with a very decent squad.

        Time to shake things up.

Not really... I guarantee you Nyom was not on yours or anyone elses radar before he got an assist today...

He's not a very good FPL proposition as that will likely be his only attacking involvment of the season...

I'm thinking of wildcarding into this? No stand out captain choice, is that too risky? Any thoughts?

    Foster Elliott
    Cedric Jones Alonso Hegazi Naughton
    Alli Salah Mkhi Poba Fabregas
    Jesus Firmino 4.5

    1. Rödallegabomb ᴿᴮ
      • 11 Years

Wouldn't wildcard to a team with a 4.5m striker, especially without heavy hitters like Lukaku and Kane. The luxury of a wildcard is that you can reshuffle after a maverick tactic, but if you use it now and it doesn't pay off, chances are you're stuck with it until the second half of the season.

That being said, the back line looks good - possibly too much invested. Plenty of good 4.5m options and M'Bemba may be worth a punt at 4.0m as a temporary starter for now.

Prefer Eriksen to Alli, what with set pieces and the likes. Don't know if Spurs assets will be as valuble as we had first thought given the Wembley factor, but Eriksen can easily score well given how adept he is on deadball situations.

      Fabregas is fools gold imo.

      Not sold on Jesus either.

Views please (for an auction league, I wouldn't ideally pick these)
Is Richarlison only playing whilst Pereyra is out?
Is Berahino finished? If so, who best from Jese or Choupo Moting?
    Will Chris Wood start?
Is Izquierdo of Brighton any good and will they start to score reasonably?
    How is Jordan Ayew playing?
Will Hoedt of Southampton start and are Yoshida's starting days numbered?
Are Hendrick and Defour set for regular games?
    Thank you.
