Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Tuesday

Liverpool’s wide men get among the goals again, while Alvaro Morata and Gylfi Sigurdsson both bag a brace apiece for Spain and Iceland respectively.

Alexis Sanchez shrugs off an injury scare to play the full 90 minutes for Chile and Swansea’s cut-price frontman Tammy Abraham delivers for the England Under 21s.

Here’s the notes on a busy night of action…

Liverpool trio all in action

Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane continue to dominate Fantasy Premier League managers’ thoughts.

Only Romelu Lukaku is owned by more bosses than the Brazilian among strikers, while the Reds’ wide men remain in the top four for midfielders.

All were in action last night.

Firmino started but drew a blank as Brazil were held 1-1 in Colombia, while Mo Salah scored an early, and decisive, goal as Egypt saw off Uganda 1-0, with West Brom defender Ahmed Hegazi completing a second 90 minutes of the international break.

Mane, meanwhile, was the pick of the bunch. He found the net and added an assist as Senegal drew 2-2 in Burkina Faso, with Everton’s Idrissa Gueye setting up the Liverpool man’s goal.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have a mixed schedule to come – mci, BUR, lei, new, MAN, tot – but that’s not dampened the desire for the trio as all three are in the top six for Gameweek 4 transfers-in.

Firmino (260,000+) leads the way and played just 63 minutes over the international break, Salah is third with 162,000 new owners and 180 minutes of action under his belt, while Mane (142,000) is sixth, having also played two full matches for his country.

Philippe Coutinho will also be on Klopp’s mind. Last season’s talisman started, scored and played the full match for Brazil against Ecuador before being handed a further 15 minutes from the bench against Colombia yesterday.

Any doubts about his fitness seem to have been laid to rest, but what state he is in mentally following his protracted non-move to Barcelona is yet to be discovered.

Klopp has made it clear that he wants to welcome the 8.8-priced star back into the fold, but FPL managers remain cautious – a mere 3,600+ have taken a punt on him this week, and he is owned overall by just 2.0%.

Elsewhere, Welsh tyro Ben Woodburn was at it again, providing an assist as Wales won 2-0 in Moldova.

Silva shines on mixed night for City stars

David Silva produced a goal and assist for Spain in an 8-0 rout of Lichtenstein.

The Man City midfielder started both matches for his country over the international break and his contribution last night built on a solid start to the domestic campaign.

He has 16 points from two assists and four bonus – a decent return for his 8.1 price tag, particularly when compared to Kevin De Bruyne’s (9.9) eight-point haul to date.

While the Belgian continues to be the most sold player of the Gameweek, with 185,000 parting company, 68,0000+ new managers have made Silva City’s most popular new acquisition.

He now sits in 9.5% of squads (De Bruyne is in 18.8%), but faces a decidedly mixed bag of short-term fixtures which involves Liverpool at home and Chelsea away sandwiching a trip to Watford and a visit from Crystal Palace.

Competition for places in City’s midfield is beyond intense, but both Silva and De Bruyne have played the full 270 minutes so far, and it would be a major surprise – even by the reliably unreliable Pep Guardiola’s standards – if they don’t feature prominently against Liverpool.

Who plays up front, however, is anyone’s guess.

Gabriel Jesus has started all three domestic matches to date, although he was hauled off against Everton as Guardiola was forced to re-group following the dismissal of Kyle Walker.

Sergio Aguero was dropped to the bench for the Gameweek 3 trip to Bournemouth as Guardiola abandoned his two-striker policy for a Jesus-only front line.

The Argentinian travelled thousands of miles to spend a further 180 minutes on his backside over the international break, whereas Jesus followed up a full match against Ecuador with a 30-minute run-out in Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Colombia.

Given that their Etihad encounter underway on Saturday lunchtime, Man City and Liverpool have chartered a private jet to get their Samba stars back with plenty of time to spare.

Elsewhere…

Europe
Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata’s excellent international break continued in Lichtenstein as he scored twice and provided an assist in Spain’s 8-0 demolition job. Having also found the net against Italy at the weekend, he’s been subject to over 224,000 transfers-in this Gameweek – second only to Firmino ahead of a trip to Leicester.

West Brom forward Hal Robson-Kanu and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey were on the score sheet for Wales as they left it late to beat Moldova 2-0. Burnley striker Sam Vokes set up Ramsey’s clincher.

Ramsey came into the international break with his fitness in doubt. He has finished it with two starts and a goal – encouraging signs as Arsenal embark on a decent run of fixtures (BOU, che, WBA, BRI, wat) in which the home matches in particular offer the chance for the 3%-owned midfielder to build on his opening day strike against Leicester City.

Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson managed the full 180 minutes for Iceland over the break, and he scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Ukraine last night.

Back-to-back clashes with Spurs and Man United have ensured that the playmaker’s ownership remains at just 5% in FPL but with the fixtures set to turn in Gameweek 6, heavy investment is expected as Sigurdsson looks to replicate last season’s career-high 181 points.

And Swansea’s Tammy Abraham produced a goal and assist for the England Under 21s in a 3-0 win over Latvia.

After opening his account for the season in the Gameweek 3 win over Palace, Abraham – at 5.5 – now boasts an excellent upcoming schedule, with home encounters against Newcastle, Watford, Huddersfield and Leicester in the six Gameweeks.

Leicester’s Demarai Gray and Huddersfield’s Kasey Palmer also found the net, with Everton midfielder Tom Davies supplying the assist for Palmer’s effort.

South America
An Alexis Sanchez injury scare proved to be unfounded as he played the full 90 minutes in Bolivia as Chile lost 1-0, while Chelsea’s Willian opened the scoring for Brazil in Colombia.

Africa
Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba finds himself in the top eight for transfers-in this week on the back of a nine-point haul in Gameweek 3 and a very attractive 4.0 price tag.

So more than 126,000 new managers – out of 8.0% in total – would have been delighted to hear that he had opened the scoring for Congo DR against Tunisia last night.

Less pleasing was the fact that Mbemba then limped off with a knock just before the hour-mark that puts his participation for the trip to Swansea City on Sunday in doubt.

His Toon team-mate Christian Atsu recorded a second assist of the international break as Ghana romped to a 5-1 win over Congo.

Man United’s Eric Bailly and new Spurs signing Serge Aurier played the full 90 minutes as Ivory Coast lost at home to Gabon 2-1, with Southampton’s Mario Lemina scoring a long-range screamer for the visitors.

Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez deadline day whereabouts were a mystery, but he was found in time to turn out for Algeria in a 0-1 loss to Zambia last night.

Australasia
Huddersfield’s most popular FPL asset, the 11.5%-owned midfielder Aaron Mooy, returned from illness to play the full match for Australia, providing both assists in a 2-1 win over Thailand.

Brighton keeper Mat Ryan also started.

WC Team no Kane or Kaku

    Elliot Krul
    Naughton Hegazi Davies Jones 4.0m
    Alli Eriksen Miki Pogba Salah
    Firmino Quaner Morata/Jesus/Laca

This allows you to rotate Naughton and Hegazi but more importantly allows you to have a 10m striker that you can captain?

Robbie Brady has taken more corners (16) and delivered more successfully (9) than anyone else so far this season. Having taken 16 of the 17 corners Burnley have won, he also has one of the league's clearest monopolies on them.

Burnley haven't scored from a corner in their first three games, but have the highest expected goals (xG) from corners (1.10) of any team yet to do so, and the fourth best overall (after United, Spurs and Watford).

Their next two opponents have the second and third worst expected goals against (xGA) from corners in the league so far, Palace (1.62) and Liverpool (1.47), who are ahead of only Swansea.

Cheers for that. I'd like to take a different approach: 46% of Burnley's goals were scored from set pieces last season. Let's assume Brady is expected to be involved in about 90% of Burnley's goals from set pieces. So I'm roughly estimating him to be assisting 40% of Burnley's goals. I'd probably expect Burnley to score about 2 goals over the next two fixtures (you can verify this with the bookies). That makes him about 0.8 assists expected. Would you say that's good value for a 5.5m mid bought in for assists?

I probably don't understand this and stats are great but ...

1.1 expected goals scored from corners when Burnley haven't scored one yet ... after 3 games ? Can you really take any meaning from this ?

Expected goals against from corners stat after 3 games ?

      Seems a bit fanciful

      1. Ludo
        • 10 Years

Expected goals gives a value to every shot taken, factoring in the location and situation - for example, an xG of 0.20 for a shot means that it has an average conversion rate of 20%, based on previous shots taken in the same circumstances.

It's not something that gets more or less accurate over time, and it doesn't account for the quality of the finisher - it's just the best method we have to assess the quality of chances a team or a player has had.

The total xG of all Burnley's shots from corners is 1.10, so with average finishing, you'd expect them to have scored at least once. Basically, they've been creating strong chances from corners, and Palace and Swansea have been conceding them.

As you say, the issue is the small sample size of three games, but that's all we have to go on to make any of our decisions at this stage.

So if a player never actually gets a shot on target but has lots of shots, the expected goal stat will be very high? It a player never even scores a goal the expected goal stat will still be high ?

Basically the expected goal stat is not driven by shots on target or goals scored ?

Does the quality of possession affect whether the shot is on target or not ? I thought whether s shot was on target was a straight binary issue - yes or no - and not dependent on any thing else at all ? Confused still ...

If you miss an easy shot that the majority would score, you'll get a high expected goal stat for that attempt.

If Player 1 misses easy chances compared to Player 2 scoring difficult chances, then Player 1 gets a higher 'chance of scoring' stat than Player 2?

                    Is that correct ?

Player 2 is outdoing his expected goal score. Vokes has 0.32 yet has 2 goals.
Player 1 is like Kane atm. Kane is around 2.5 so 2.5 expected goals yet on 0 goals.

Quality of position is all that counts. If you are getting in good positions, you'll be expected to score more than Coutinho having pot shots outside the box.

If you have 100 shots outside the box, how many would you expect to go in?
Freekicks are more likely due to having some distance before the ball is blocked.
That would affect the value given for the shot.

So the answer is no? Nothing to do with whether a shot is on target - which after all is a prerequisite for scoring goals ?

I am struggling with the relevance of a stat that suggests a player will score even though the player may not have even ever have a shot on target ?

Where does this stat come from ? Who dreamed it up ? Is it Opta or something ?

Nothing to do with SoT. If you have a shot from the 6 yard box in the centre of the goal, you are expected to score at least 1 out of 2 times. The value is roughly 0.5 for that shot. They give a value for all the areas on the pitch. You can have 10 shots from half way that the keeper saves which shows 10 SoT but a value of something like 0.01x10 = 0.1 so quality of position counts.

Brady basically must have a very similar 'chance of goal' stat as Alonso then ? Even though he hasn't scored and just has a single shot on target ?

If that is the case it's not a very realistic stat ?

If Alonso was taking the same shots as Brady, he could have 3 goals. It doesn't take account of the player's quality.

Alonso scored a low chance free kick and a goal from the left side which Lloris pretty much let in. Both rate low in quality of position.

Thanks for your replies TM, genuinely trying to get my head around it. I can understand the relevance of having lots of quality chances, but I do think it needs to be be considered along with the quality of the player and the quality of the shot (on target or not).

Some players simply couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo not matter how many times they try 😉

Chances are if the quality of position is high, the shot will be on target even if a rubbish player is taking it.

Except for Brady (at the moment) who has only had one shot on target and must dither a bit because defenders seem to be able to get a foot in and stop the shot 😉

Quality of the player is definitely a big factor as well - the two players who outscored their xG by the most last season were Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku! It's the best measure we have for quality of chances, but I'm not saying it should be looked at it in isolation, it's just another string to our bow.

Burnley may well continue to fail to convert the chances Brady creates, but given how well he's delivering corners, and how poorly Palace and Liverpool are defending them, I think he's a good option for the next couple of weeks - that's all. He's not going in my team, but at 5.5, he's well worth highlighting.

Right, it just measures the quality of chances, not the quality of the finisher.

It's incredibly unlikely you'll get a player with a high xG but very few shots on target or goals for long, though. Taking lots of shots won't boost your xG much if they're from poor positions.

For example, Pogba and Salah have both scored 2 goals and 2 assists so far, and have taken 12 shots. However, Salah has had 8 shots on target to Pogba's 3, and 11 shots in the box to Pogba's 5.

This is reflected in their xG - Salah's is 2.81, second only to Lukaku, with an xG of 0.23 per shot - he's taking his shots from positions that, on average, would be converted 23% of the time. Pogba's is 1.52, which is an xG of 0.13 per shot. Given that both have a conversion rate so far of 16.7%, you might expect Salah to improve, and Pogba to regress slightly, if they continue to shoot at the same rate.

xG has been found to be a better predictor of future goals than shots on target (http://11tegen11.net/2015/01/05/the-best-predictor-for-future-performance-is-expected-goals/). It started off being developed by football analytics enthusiasts, but now OPTA have developed their own model, which is being shown on Match of the Day this season.

Do people pay much attention to projected price falls?

I note Mee and Dunk look close to a drop while their respective partners Tarkowski and Duffy have neutral movement on fplstatistics.

Would you opt for the safe option value wise or plunge for the 'better' player with the risk of a prise drop if form doesn't improve?

I paid attention to it and he is kind of stable. Transfers over the last couple of days were non existent and he has one green arrow instead of a couple of red ones on fplstatistics so that suggests Mee is safe from dropping for now.

20 minutes in three weeks is not great for confidence or sharpness. Jesus has both of those and Kun might just get the easier game against Feyenoord midweek. Of course, it's a mixed signal so far with Pep's selections so we will again know much more on Saturday.

Who would you rather have on WC:

          A) Blind
          B) Jones
          C) Kolasinac

All extra funds will just be saved itb.

          Best 4.0-5.0m attacking defenders?

Have a back line of 1x5m, 3x4.5m and 1x4m but need improvements... currently:

          Daniels/Hegazi/Naughton/Mee/Mbemba

Sutter and Dunk have had chances but Brighton is not the best atm so Not taking a chance. Not sure where else to look?

toss a coin, all personal preference.

Eriksen for me, when Kane goes off he'll now be crossing to Llorente's head instead of Jansen's

I prefer Eriksen due to goal involvement. Alli can be explosive but also has a temper and often loses on BPS. Both great options though

Flip a coin - I have Erikson but wish I had Alli
If I had Alli I would wish I had Erikson
Alli for goals Erikson for assists and free kicks
Not sure how things change now Son is back

Eriksen but Alli's banned from 3 CL games so secure.

Eriksen for the hauls (potential captain pick), Alli for the trickle of points - Alli less likely to be rested/rotated due to his CL ban. Personally I like Eriksen, especially after his International displays this week.

MH spoke about this and said he's one for the future in relation to Zouma being there for a season and a Chelski player. He argued that they wouldn't have been able to get/afford him (Wimmer) next season.

Tough one. The way Zouma was playing last game was almost like a winger so hopefully for FPL sake he moves to RWB and Wimmer players. I'm going to wait for now.

Probably this week. The main thing I don't like about it is the selection headaches. Should probably have less £ on the bench

Yeah considering him as well. Sort of too good for 3/5/2 & 4/4/2 yet I'm not not comfortable enough with him for 3/4/3.
