Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 4 – Sunday

Burnley’s record signing keeps things clinical, while his defensive colleagues keep it clean against a Crystal Palace side that does everything but score at Turf Moor.

Elsewhere, a toothless Swansea City can only dream of such chances as they succumb to an increasingly resilient Newcastle.

Here are Sunday’s notes.

Wood pulling up some trees…

Two matches, two goals – Premier League life is good for Burnley’s Chris Wood.

He followed up his debut strike away at Spurs with the winner at home to Crystal Palace, latching on to Lee Chung-yong’s awful back pass to slot home.

The New Zealand international was used alongside Sam Vokes in a 4-4-2 formation by Sean Dyche, a system that could well be the home default for a while in light of the Clarets’ kindly Turf Moor schedule.

They’ll entertain Huddersfield, West Ham, Newcastle and Swansea City before the end of Gameweek 12, although it’s an entirely different matter on the road.

Dyche is unlikely to be so progressive when his side have to face Liverpool, Everton and Man City over their next three away fixtures – match-ups that should mean a switch to 4-5-1 and competition between the two strikers for a lone spot up front.

Wood has form and efficiency in his favour. His 60% shot accuracy and 40% goal conversion rates are up there with the best among those forwards who’ve scored twice over the last two Gameweeks.

That’s just as well when Burnley have managed a mere 17 attempts over that time frame – including just three chances created today.

…while Burnley’s defence stand tall

An injury to talismanic keeper Tom Heaton didn’t deter Burnley’s backline from completing their first clean sheet of the campaign.

Last season’s top scoring shot stopper went off with a suspected dislocated shoulder after 35 minutes – a blow to his 7.2% ownership but a chance for understudy Nick Pope, who is 0.5 cheaper, to get a good run in the team.

He started that bid with a two-point showing – he made three saves – while the most popular pick among the defence, Ben Mee (8.1%), had to make do with just the six points after missing out on any bonus.

Those on team-mate Stephen Ward (4.4%) will be rather more satisfied with an eight-point showing that included two bonus – the full-back now has almost double the points (19-10) of his more popular colleague.

Mee’s time as the go-to Burnley defender for Fantasy Premier League managers could be limited.

James Tarkowski looks to have cemented his start and is beginning to show more bonus point potential as he now leads Mee for clearances, blocks and interceptions (65 v 55) and tackles won (7 v 5).

However, if Heaton is – as expected – sidelined for several months with a dislocated shoulder, we perhaps have to question the merits of investing in the Clarets’ backline. The skipper is undoubtedly a key factor in their clean sheet potential having made more saves than any other keeper last season.

Palace problems crystal clear

Frank de Boer might be out of a job by the time I finish writing, or you finish reading, this sentence.

But there were signs of a revival in their loss at Burnley.

The coach ditched his wing-back system and geared his players up to be more direct, and it so very nearly paid off.

A Gameweek-leading 23 shots was the result, with Christian Benteke and Scott Dann particularly profligate in front of goal.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, their schedule is about to stiffen. Southampton visit next week, before back-to-back trips to both Manchester clubs and a home match with Chelsea.

Palace’s most popular player, Ruben Loftus-Cheek (8.4%), could be the major casualty in all that.

The 4.5-priced midfielder had reportedly recovered from a groin injury that forced him to miss the Gameweek 3 loss to Swansea City, but he was deemed not fit enough to even make the matchday squad on Sunday.

Benched by 349,000 and sold by 91,000 this week, the exodus may well now continue.

When fit, his starting role would seem assured, however.

Newcastle keep it clean

Nearly 900,000 FPL managers kept Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot out of their starting line-ups, making him the most benched player of the Gameweek.

The 20.5%-owned stopper responded with an eight-point performance at Swansea City that included a clean sheet, three saves and one bonus point.

He’s now up to 19 points for the season and, with minimal competition for his starting slot at Newcastle, continues to function very nicely as a 4.0 fire and forget option. Significantly perhaps, he made just three saves today but still picked up a single bonus point.

The Geordies made it back-to-back clean sheets with a resolute showing in south Wales, and they have now conceded just three goals in four outings this season – only three sides can top that.

Rafa Benitez’s men are also fifth best for fewest shots conceded in the area, while centre-half Jamaal Lascelles’ match-winning goal launched him to a 15-point display.

But it was Jesus Gamez’s first start of the season that might get us thinking.

The 4.0-priced defender racked up eight points, including two bonus, and could be the latest uber-cheap way into an increasingly impressive Newcastle defence ahead of an almost entirely kind run of home fixtures – STK LIV CPL BOU WAT LEI.

His place, however, is far from guaranteed, with the benched DeAndre Yedlin and Florian Lejeune waiting in the wings.

At the other end of the pitch, Matt Ritchie made it consecutive assists for his 2.4% ownership, while the 3.6% on Christian Atsu had to make do with a second-half cameo following his international exertions for Ghana.

And in the battle of the budget forwards, Joselu might have failed to score, but he offered much more than Swansea rival Tammy Abraham.

The 5.5-priced Magpies striker registered a Gameweek-leading four shots on target, while his six shots in total was matched only by Man United’s Romelu Lukaku.

Abraham managed just two attempts as the Swans continue to struggle for a creative spark.

Swansea assets cheap but cheerless

Abraham was one of three Swans players who made it into the top 20 for transfers-on this Gameweek.

He was bought by 101,000 new managers, while team-mates Kyle Naughton (135,000) and Renato Sanches (116,000) proved even more popular.

Naughton’s owners can at least look forward to a decent run of fixtures.

Once next week’s trip to Spurs is out of the way, that involves visits from Watford, Huddersfield and Leicester City and an away clash with West Ham – solid chances to build on Swansea’s two clean sheets thus far.

But the Swans’ impotent attack is a major issue.

Paul Clement’s side are bottom for shots and joint-bottom for both shots in the box and shots on target.

In fact, they’ve managed just three more attempts all season than Palace had at Burnley today.

A -12 in itself isn't necessarily worth a WC, but nor do I think Kane is necessarily worth a -12.

How bad is your strikeforce and/or captain options for next week that's got you so desperate?

    Foster (Elliott)
    Alonso, Jones, Hegazi (Mbemba, Long)
Eriksen, Salah, Mkhi, Carroll (Cork) Kane, Lukaku, Chica

    Have 0,3itb and 2FT
    Thinking to do this week:
    Firmino+Doucoure+Bavies for Chicarito+Salah+Mbemba (for -4)

And next week to use 0,9m funds to upgrade Cork or Hegazi.

    Any thoughts on those moves?

    Will appreciate thoughts, thanks.

See how Chica goes today. He has a good run of fixtures.
Don't know if I like those moves as it may still leave you with only 2 playing defenders.

Maybe Heg to Bavies and downgrade Chica if does nothing for no hit.
Or I am thinking go 433 over time with Chica to fodder. With the big 2 upfront you got to save somewhere and 4 at the back saves bucks.

Who do people fancy for the CL this year?

Real Madrid and Bayern stuttering in the league, Barca weakened. Will Allegri see sense and drop Buffon for Szczesny? 😉

I'd love Napoli or BvB to win it.

They have a frightening team! Cavani could get 5 or 6 1v1's a game, so could possibly score one. 😉

I'm not sure they really have an XI much better than the other mentioned superteams, I think they just found a good balance under Zidane. I think with Benz being on a downward slope, other teams just need that balance.

On paper there are a few teams on their level for sure but it's the balance you point to and the strength and experience all the way through the side that sets them apart and that's what has set them apart the last two seasons..

Pep doesn't have it in his locker to build a team that can defend and be hard to beat when it matters he could get away with it at Barca because his team had the ball for 80% of pretty much every game and had Messi too.. Last seasons capitulation against Barca will be hard to get out of the system for PSG but have the players on the pitch to go all the way for sure.. Mourinho has been there and done it but doesn't have the personnel at the level of the elite although he didn't at Porto or Inter tbf

Any thoughts on this team, looking at the fixture swings:

    Pickford, Elliott
    Alderweireld, Jones, Wimmer, Naughton, Simpson
    Hazard, Pogba, Siggurdson, Choupo-Moting, Carroll
    Kane, Vardy, Firmino

      It's okay.

Obviously individual players are simply personal preference, but your squad structure looks worryingly inflexible.

There are no other strikers in the 8.5m price range should one of both stutter, 5.5m mids are difficult to come by, and 3 4.5m defenders could be difficult.

On individual players, I think it's too early for Hazard, I prefer Jese over Moting, and Toby seems a strange choice over Davies.

Rather Davies over Alder. Spurs mid needed imo.

    3. PoKoeman
      • 7 Years

Yeah Davies would be great (though missed the first price rise), just thinking with CL and then Christmas rotation then Toby A is unlikely to give any issues, and surely he has to regain that goal threat of a couple of seasons ago!?

Moting currently OOP as striker and seems to play the full 90.

I think Vardy will be a great pick, then want to keep Firm as Lpool cover, but yeah I get the point about needing 2 FT or a hit to change things easily.

Could have Davies, Salah, and Morata over Toby A, Hazard, and Firmino?

Only issue for Morata is that he seems to be substituted a lot already, which may get worse as CL kicks in, do we think this is just Conte easing him in?

Don't know to be honest. Does not need 90 it seems. The points keep rolling in - happy to have him for now.

      2. Wilshere Knowledge

I think Davies is worth the risk of Rose, giving some corners, being a wingback, good on BAPS, and the fact Rose hasn't played in so long, on top of his outburst.

Moting and Jese are interchanging the striker spot during games it seems. I just think Jese has better end product. Although Jese isn't completely fit yet.

I like Vardy and Firmino too.

I prefer the first 3 to the second, although you could keep Firmino over Morata and go wild with the funds? 😉

        1. PoKoeman
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

Cheers! Great points. I guess we will get obvious signs when Rose is on the way back so Bavies is probably the way to go.

I guess Moting will be a good bandwagon for the week (as well as price being cheaper than Jese), and he seems a good threat from set pieces, which adds a little more to his stock

You could risk Mane to Cout like I did and then Heg can become a decent attacking mid around 6 mil mark- like a Kola.

Which one is better options, and why?

    A. Firmino+Doucoure+Bavies+0,6m
    B. Chicarito+Salah+Mbemba

Note: A can be done with -4, B is my current team.

    Thanks.

T ext below is from above article. Hard to see them keeping a clean sheet in the so called easy matches of Leicester and Watford

Once next week’s trip to Spurs is out of the way, that involves visits from Watford, Huddersfield and Leicester City and an away clash with West Ham – solid chances to build on Swansea’s two clean sheets thus far.

Wimmer an interesting one. I'd be a bit worried about his minutes when Shawcross returns from injury.

Davies seems like a no-brainer though

To afford it I need a 4.4 defender and wimmer fits the bill. Club record signing so I think he will play.

I could have done today and got a 4.5 but with champions league mid week didn't want to risk it

Horrific gameweek here. Played my WC and it must have been the worst WC I've ever played. If I'd left my team as it was last week then I'd have had an awesome GW, banked a transfer and still have my WC intact.

Now I've had a bit of time to reflect, here's the aftermath:

    - 3.3mil GW rank. Dropped from 1.4mil to 1.8mil OR. Scored 35points all out.
    - Got rid of Kane & Lukaku. (mercifully left enough in the bank to get Kane in though)
    - One week punt on Lacazette failed (over just going with Kane from the start).
    - Double Liverpool was/is a massive fail (although it's hard to predict a red card followed by a Pool capitulation)
    - My 4 man Defence scored a total of 5pts between them.
    - Am struggling for funds to get in a Spurs Mfer going forward.
    - Have triple Man Utd (Jones, Miki, Pogba) just as their fixtures/form take a turn for the worse.

    Positives:
    - My team looks pretty good on paper still.
    - Happy to have Morata onboard. And I think he can keep pace with Lukaku for 1.5mil cheaper.
    - Think that Alonso will prove to be a total bargain at 7.1 so happy to have him in my team as well.
    - Despite the City result, Firminho looks to be a great bet at 8.6. On pens and nailed on in one of the potent attacks in the league.

You'll be fine. Seen a lot of WCers having a bad week despite a good team. Get Kane.

I must admit that I find it hard to sympathise with those who wildcarded last week. It was far too early and as I advised repeatedly on here, getting rid of Kane is pure madness.

If Morata blanks and Lukaku goes wild, your rank will take a severe drop.

Now that Bavies has emerged at 5.6, wouldn't he be a better bet as your elite defender rather than the more costly Alonso?

      1. thegaffer82

The WC was a mistake. No doubts about it but at the time I had what seemed like major problems (Kane 3 blanks & price dropping, Kolasinac played CB or benched at 6.0, KDB not delivering at 10.0, Mounie wasting a valuable striker spot, Danilo rotation risk; Plus I really wanted Alonso, Firminho, Pogba (over Kaku) and Morata.

I see what your saying about Davies. But ideally I'd like both to be honest. I'm firmly in the camp who see Alonso as a 7mil MFer who scores more points for cleanies and goals. I'll leave him in my team for the long haul now.

Bad look on the WC. But should be ok after you get Kane back in and get the armband on.
I agree on both Alonso and Bavies. They seem the go to attacking defenders. Then Jones and Cedric provide some value. So thats my back 4.

Can't agree that WC was a mistake. It's disappointing when you do it early and it doesn't work out, but I pulled the trigger and have 83 GW points with Chicharito to come. I'd take that every time on a WC, and the squad has been built for the future too. Madness is keeping cash ITB for Kane instead of just playing Kane, imo.

The first gameweek after an international break is notoriously hard to predict - which means that a good wildcard will often flop in that week.

But if you have Morata, Firmino, plans for Kane for free plus the likes of Alonso then you are well set up.

A wildcard needs to be looked at in terms of how it sets you up for weeks to come.

Captaining Alli a bad idea? He is banned in CL and will be fresh next week against SWA(H). I have Luka, Jesus, Salah, Pogba and Mkhi as other candidates.

Not a terrible idea, but I just think the likes of Kaku or Jesus will offer you less chance of a blank. Alli can be a bit hot cold, whereas Kaku & Jesus just keep bringing home at least a goal or assist most weeks.

Pogba could be a great diff though. Everton have been surprisingly poor and Pogba is very threatening every game

    Foster Elliott

So both my budget defenders (Suttner and Mee) look likely to drop this week, have 2 FT. I wouldn't transfer both but as I have Ryan, Suttner out is definitely on the cards as I would probably never double them up in a week (don't ask me how I let double Brighton defense slip through). Only other real issue is probably Gabbi and not sure what I'm doing with him yet.

I suppose the question is would you let the impending drop influence your decision making here or just cop em on the chin particularly with midweek games this week?

You might want to start writing 'work' in inverted commas. Not much work being done. 😉

Want to be part of the rotation?

            Rotation never works TM.

Did you learn nothing from Siggy/Bojan?

I've never had Bojan in my team.

We must destroy Skynet before it's too late.

Is Gomez a favorite in Klopp's defense now?

Yes, but if pool sort things out and he becomes a 1st choice I think he's a great cheap differential.

    Firmino to Kane.
Liv shouldnt be as prolofic without Mane, and I have Salah already

    What you guys reckon?

Kane will score more points. But Firmino is also a good option.

Depends on whether you could make better use of the funds tbh.

People are considering Lukaku or Jesus>Kane, so Firmino is relatively an easier decision. Especially when you have Salah already.
