The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 6

Quite simply, we can’t have them all.

On a day that began with us fixated on the fortunes of Sergio Aguero, it was perhaps fitting that almost every other big striker produced their own bid to steal his thunder.

Aguero was a slow starter but eventually found his gear to take his turn in Manchester City’s mauling of Crystal Palace.

A goal and an assist were his reward, with two bonus points ensuring that the Argentine avoided being dwarfed by the double-figure blitz from Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane from midfield.

Again, there was evidence that Pep Guardiola’s attacking riches border on the ridiculous. Just ask Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian sat unused on the bench, forcing his 678,000 owners – not least the 183,000 who acquired him with Palace in mind – to choke on a bitter pill.

Pep’s Jesus decision was perhaps signposted by 90 minutes in midweek. But it’s no less confusing for us Fantasy managers, who must now wonder if Guardiola will toy with ongoing rotation of his strikers, with Sterling and Sane building compelling claims for regular starts.

Chelsea in Gameweek 6 will tell us more, although it’s City’s meeting with a beleaguered Stoke City defence that we really care about now.

We can, of course, opt out completely. It’s not as if our options are limited.

Harry Kane’s brace at the London Stadium offered a reminder that he will not surrender the Golden Boot, or his place in squads.

Sold by 196,000, with 141,000 of those swapping to Aguero, the Spurs striker set the bar for the City man with a 13-point return in the early kick-off.

Kane remains a force of nature, with the talent to circumvent Spurs’ woes on the Wembley turf – he now has 11 goals from his last five away matches.

Romelu Lukaku wasn’t to be put in the corner. He picked off his sixth goal in as many Gameweeks, as Manchester United endured a hard-fought victory at St Mary’s.

But Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata won today’s battle.

He ruthlessly exploited an ailing Stoke City defence to punish the 148,000 who had disposed of his services amid the clamour for Aguero.

Chelsea and Morata won’t play against a centre-back pairing of Darren Fletcher and Glen Johnson every week, but the Spaniard’s haul was nonetheless telling.

It offered a reminder that this is a season awash with goal scoring riches.

Our midfield firepower may have stalled – thanks in no small part to the absence of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez. But that’s allowed the strikers to roll back the years and reinstate themselves as the critical position in our squad.

This could have a marked impact on our squad construction, particularly for those still with Wildcards to play. Funds in midfield will surely be scrutinised, monies in defence squeezed.

This could be a season where the big-hitting forwards take turns to dominate. Restricting ourselves to just two may no longer cut it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

By having Brady Atsu Ritchie in midfield alongside Haz. Still have Bertrand, Jones, Forster, Hegazi, Naughton Mee at the back, which will eventually squeeze the £m out of to get Pogba for one of the three mids when he returns

I'm an advocate of the triple heavy frontline going kun Kaku Kane on my WC last week.

See many on here saying it ruins the rest of your team, which looks a classic case of people regurgitating what they read on the boards without actually having a go at tinkering with it on FPL. Perfectly doable imo.

Morata also in form and has a great run of fixtures coming up, for those that want to save a few pennies.

Yeah, it just means you have one less premium mid. Not the end of the world.

One thing about Morata is we're yet to see if him or Hazard is the better option. I would prefer Hazard even if slightly more expensive as the 3 slots are so valuable this year!

Totally agree. I went for that triple up front last week after Kun destroyed Watford & it wasn't well received by a fair few folks - primarily because my midfield was rubbish apparently & my team has no balance.

    4. diesel001
      • 7 Years

I am struggling with the defence with those three up front. Best I can come up with is a 4-4-2:

      (Pope) - Elliot
      (Naughton) - Azpi - Jones - Kola - Davies
      Ritchie - Eriksen - (Carroll) - Silva - Salah
      Morata - Lukaku - (McBurnie)

      1. Kuqi Monster

        6 years, 7 months ago

I went 433, Kolasinac Davies Jones 4.5 Mbemba in defence.

Means you have to have three cheapies in midfield, but you only have to play one each week, and I like the look of Atsu at 5m.

I see. Can just get away with this:

          (Pope) - Elliot
          Naughton - (Hunnemeier) - Jones - Kola - Davies
          Ritchie - Salah - Eriksen - (King) - (Carroll)
          Morata - Lukaku - Aguero

There's truth in it though... If you can have 2 premium defenders and another strong midfield option in stead of one premium striker they will probably outscore a top heavy team. Aguero's 11 points this week, or even Lukaku's 9 can't beat Jones and Azpilicueta's scores for example!

And let's wait and see what a certain mr Sanchez will decide on doing on Monday first?

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years

Well yesterday for example Mee & Jones got 15 points between them & are only 9.5 combined. They far out scored Alonso & kept up with the city full backs. Likewise week before Cedric, Hegazi, Naughton etc. There's plenty of value in the 4.5 & 5.0 def bracket to enable those big hitters

        1. Krionos

You need balance I think. 3 10+ strikers will leave you struggling for points in midfield and defense. Yes, there's good value in the 4.5-5.0 bracket. But look at the points some of the premium wingbacks have scored so far.

If you look at the current top ranked teams, very few of them have 3 big hitters in attack, as they are piling on the points by having a solid midfield.

I think it's just not sustainable... You can have any 2 of Kane/Lukaku/Aguero/Morata up top combined with say, a Joselu and then add 2 premium midfielders or defenders. Since you can only captain one of the big hitters any gameweek I just don't see a good reason to have 3...

I will save a ft this week in gw 7 so I have 2 ft's in gw8. Will sell Hegazi & Firmino but what would you prefer:

    Foster, Lossl

How many FT? How much itb? To be fair your team looks in good shape, could even save.

God no - why anyone would want to sell Lukaku is beyond me - guy is going to top score in FPL, or very close to it. Just get Haz by shuffling some 8.0-9.5 mids

-8 pts though not for me. and I already have tuanzebe because he is cheap. Elliot is already in my team 0.7M in the bank

    C. Azpi, King, Morata
    D. Cedric, Groß, Morata

I am wondering whether the switch from Costa to Morata (a different type of striker) has made Alonso less effective.

I think champs lge will have a bigger bearing - he will have to play a lot of extra football this year, at a very high level. For his position, physical fitness is key more so than any other position on the pitch

alonso has been whack all along defensively, his attacking return blinded people

Pogba will be straight back in for me. Might ditch lukaku when I have him and keep Jones. Not comfortable with 3 Man U.

    -Morata-Kane-Lukaku
    -------Foster---Mbemba--Caroll--Chalobah

Defence looks a bit weak but nothing pressing so I would save a transfer.
