Dugout Discussion – Brighton vs Newcastle

Sunday’s solitary fixture gets underway at 4pm as promoted pair Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle United square up at the Amex Stadium.

With many now filling their forward lines with premium frontman, we get the chance to run the rule over a trio of budget midfielders today.

The Seagulls’ Pascal Gross has played a part in all four of his side’s goals so far, serving up two goals and a pair of assists in his last two outings.

He was the second top transfer target for Gameweek 6, with over 381,000 transfers in.

For the Magpies, Matt Ritchie has bagged four assists in his previous three, while Christian Atsu’s goal and assist over his last two starts has also turned heads.

Indeed Ritchie and Atsu, along with team-mates Jamaal Lascelles and Chancel Mbemba have been subject to heavy investment over the last week, with a combined 783,000+ transfers in.

Newcastle number one Rob Elliot is the most owned player for Sunday’s clash, sitting in 23.7% of squads after conceding just once in his previous three. Yet he is the most benched player in the Gameweek, with over 808,000 naming him among their subs.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Lol @ all these planned wildcards. Use your WC when your team needs it, not just because conventional wisdom dictates the int break is a good time for it.

Can we just talk about Salah for a moment:

The guy has scored 4 in 6, while assisting twice. The 2 he hasn't scored in, he only played like 10 mins and 45 mins. Moreover, I think most would agree that if he worked on his finishing, he would have 6 or 7. At 9.1mil (or whatever he is now) he is as close to essential as one can get. While Coutinho/Mane might be good options, it doesn't mean that Salah isn't anymore

      • 8 Years

I would rank them as Mane first, then Salah, then Coutinho.

But all 3 great options. I have Salah and wouldn't swap him, just like I wouldn't swap Mane if I had him.

yep, just those swapping and discussing about swapping; why not have both, just because you have Salah, doesn't mean you cant have Coutinho as well, or even Mane

The biggest problem with Coutinhos return is that Klopp can have an easier time resting him more. Not that it makes him a bad option at all, as you rightly point out.

        6 years, 8 months ago

yep, agree rotation would be a worry. But Firmino/Coutinho struggle playing RF, and Mane's preferred position is LF. Only problem is the lack of bonus points but hey ho, cant have everything

He's the biggest goal threat in midfield atm, if he could finish better he'd be 10m in no time.

      1. F4L
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

yep, his finishing is his only problem. As you point out though, because he goal hangs so often, he's bound to get enough chances a game to put one away at least

Planning a Kane, Morata, Aguero front line in 2 weeks.

Do I stick with Firmino a week and lose value on him and potential rises from Morata / Kane or take a hit to bring one of them in? E.g.

    Eriksen + Firmino > Ritchie + Kane

    Current team:
    Elliot
    Jones, Davies, Naughton, Cedric
    Eriksen, Mkhi, Salah
    Aguero (c), Lukaku, Firmino

    (Foster)(RLC, Carroll, Rosenior)..

Bank the transfer or get rid of Mounie? 0.2 ITB

    Foster
    Kolasinac - Jones - TAA
    Eriksen - Salah - Mkhi - Ritchie - TC
    Kane - Lukaku

    Subs:
    Elliot - Mee - Mariappa - Mounie

    Foster
    Jones - Cedric - Naughton
    Salah - Mkhitaryan - Silva - Brady
    Kane - Lukaku (C) - Firmino

    Elliot - RLC - Mee - Schindler

    2FT, 0.1 ITB

Early days, but looking to keep the transfer rolling. However, where would you use the free transfer I have to spare?

    Firmino to Vardy?
    Brady to someone else (Choupo-Moting?)
Schindler to Mbemba to free up cash?

Opinions on Cresswell as an option for the foreseeable?

You can't bank on West Ham to get cleanies, but it doesnt get much better than SWA,bur,BRI,cpl. Playing as a wing back and taking set pieces doesn't hurt his stock either.

My concern is that he's got like 50 crosses in the last three without attacking returns...

    1. Netley Lucas
      • 8 Years

Yeah his rate isn't great but as long as Andy's benching was tactical then an assist is coming.

if Antonio is out, and big Andy gets the nod for the next few games, then I guess some of those crosses will start going in. He's a good option I suppose, don't think I would take him over Cedric/Jones though

I have Cedric, and Jones makes unable to to Mkhi to Silva the week after. Plus, United aren't looking great and the fixtures turn nasty soon.

2 FTs and nothing much on. Which of these do you fancy most?

    A) Clark to 4.6 defender for a 1 week punt
    B) Eriksen & Clark to Ritchie & Davies
    C) Firmino to Vardy

    Foster, Elliot
    Cedric, Jones, Mee, Clark, 4.0

I suspose Ritchie's on set pieces and Liverpool defend those with the conviction of Flubber turning a door handle

Chances of Valdemort wanting to take pens/free kicks to put one over on his previous employers?

If I'd had a 6/6+ I'd carry on with for as long as poss. However, the 5s screen I have is starting to prove too small.

    A) Firmino --> Vardy
    B) Firmino + RLC --> 4.5m forward + David Silva
    C) no change

I quite like option A as I'm thinking Lukaku to Vardy after Palace.

I was thinking A, but worried about having no man city cover - hence thinking about B
