Development Squad – Expected Goals

As regular readers may know, the current set of tasks being carried out by Matz1lla involves Expected Goal data.

We have made great progress with this in recent weeks and, on our test servers, we now have tables and maps up and running. That gives me the opportunity to show work in progress and detail what is due to arrive in Update Six.

Effectively, we’re using Opta’s data to bring you both Expected Goals (xG) and Expected Assists (xA) for both players and teams.

If you are new to the concept you can view this excellent movie from Opta explaining how xG is generated.

A full explanation from Opta is also available here.

Meanwhile, the xA data is a little different to that currently available elsewhere.

The Expected Assists data you will get as part of the update will not be generated using the xG value of a shot, instead – as explained here – it assesses the likelihood that a pass will lead to a “primary assist”.

Opta’s full explanation is:

“Expected assists measures the likelihood that a pass will be a primary assist. The model is based on the finishing location of the pass, what type of pass it was and a variety of other factors. This model is not reliant on whether a shot was taken from this pass, so credits all passes, regardless of whether they result in a shot.”

By combining xG and xA, we are able to offer an Expected Goal Involvement (xGI) statistic for players, representing the number of goals they were expected to either score or assist over any given period.

The table below shows the top ten Defenders xGI for Gameweek 7 just gone.

members

So our Members will be getting access to three statistics – xG, xA and xGI, with the latter available for players only.

However, our team data also includes xGC, or Expected Goals Conceded, so that we can assess team defensive strength.

All this data is, as ever, available to slice by any of our filtered intervals – so you can view player and team data by Gameweek, by Matches and by Home and Away matches.

It’s also dropped into our comparison tools for players and teams and will be made available for adding to custom tables.

We’ve also mapped the data to provide a visual representation of xG.

So below you’ll see a graphic showing a comparison of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus and their xG so far. We’ve allowed for full tooltip information on any xG value, giving access to the shot type, the assister and the xG value assigned.

members

Effectively, coupled with our existing Opta data, this adds a whole new weapon to our armoury when analysing teams and players.

It allows for the assessment of players and teams that are perhaps either under or overperforming, therefore offering clues as to likely regression or improvement.

We will, of course, be using the data to create members’ articles, offering guidance on how to use it and what it can tell us.

We’re currently refining the work on the test server, fixing bugs and adding new methods of showing the data.

Next, we plan to add widgets to the members’ dashboard, showing the top ten under and overachieving players for xG for the current Gameweek, with the ability to quickly view any Gameweek and the season as a whole.

I would hope that we will be in a position to release the first iteration of xG as part of Update Six early next week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'd swap Lowe for a 4.5 who's guaranteed to start - he's coming under threat from Malone after a couple of poor performances, plus Hudds fixtures about to turn nasty 🙂

I personally think neither Coutinho or Silva offer the best bang for your buck from their respective teams.

Sane/Sterling and Salah/Mane offer more points potential in the short term is my gut feeling...

I am also still not sold on Vardy, while I think Fellaini is a terrible pick, but most on here seem to like him...

The team is safe, pretty template compared to most RMWCT's around here... But it doesn't scream points potential in my honest opinion... The only real explosive options you have in there are the Spurs contributors.

I feel like there is too much upside to getting City players in. Kun's injury has been a blessing in disguise with this fixture swing and it's worth a gamble on Peps rotation. I haven't had any City all season but i feel like this is the perfect time to rumble.

Tripling up and not entirely convinced by Jesus. He's good, don't get me wrong, but right now I prefer Vardy and balancing out my team. I'd consider doing Sterling + Silva, but that would require me to drop Salah and I'm not too keen on that.

I've got Salah and I'm not at all tempted by Coutinho because whenever I've owned him in the past he has been infuriatingly inconsistent. Salah on the other hand has been one of the most consistent players in the game so far. Unless he goes through a significant barren spell I'm sticking.

A lot of players have gone for three premium forwards and two premium midfielders. Carroll and RLC have been given two of the other midfield positions by many, mainly because of their price. I've been investigating whether another partnership for the 3rd and 4th midfielder's spots could be better value, even if it means getting a cheaper player in defence.

Below are the results of the returns from the top 2 midfielders in each team in terms of combined price, combined points and average points score per million, sorted by combined points score.

Team Top Two MIDFIELDERS Price Score Average
    1 Man City David Silva / De Bruyne 18.5 81 4.38
    2 Spurs Eriksen / Alli 19.2 80 4.17
    3 Watford Richarlison / Doucouré 11.4 78 6.84
    4 Man Utd Mkhitaryan / Pogba 16.5 74 4.48
    5 Liverpool Salah / Coutinho 18.1 68 3.76
    6 Brighton Groß / March 10.7 59 5.51
    7 Stoke Choupo-Moting / Shaqiri 11.5 55 4.78
    8 Arsenal Ramsey / Xhaka 12.6 52 4.13
    9 Newcastle Ritchie / Atsu 11.1 52 4.68
    10 Huddersfield Mooy / Kachunga 11.7 48 4.10
    11 Southampton Davis / Tadic 11.6 47 4.05
    12 Burnley Brady / Defour 11.0 44 4.00
    13 Chelsea Kanté / Willian 12.0 44 3.67
    14 Leicester Mahrez / Albrighton 14.0 41 2.93
    15 West Brom Phillips / Brunt 11.4 41 3.60
    16 West Ham Ayew / Kouyaté 12.0 38 3.17
    17 Bournemouth Surman / Ibe 9.5 34 3.58
    18 Swansea Carroll / Fer 9.9 30 3.03
    19 Everton Davies / Gueye 10.3 27 2.62
    20 Crystal Palace Townsend / Puncheon 10.5 22 2.10

It can be seen, that at a combined price of 11.4 and and average score of 6.84 points per million, getting Richarlison and Doucouré together could be the way forward in the long run to achieve a high points total.

Incidentally, Carroll and RLC have a combined price of 9.0, combined points score of 24 and average score of just 2.67 points per million.

    What do you think?

Because I think having both players from the same team would be an advantage especially as Doucoure seems to be overlooked. He is only 2 points behind Richarlison and is 0.8 cheaper. If one fails the other could get the points.

It is very difficult to predict who is going to go well from this momemt on which is what matters. Not least because all those players have played different teams. So not the same playing field coupled with the fact that returns are influenced by your teams scoring so far which could have much to do with luck than anything else.

Eg. Had kane scored as well as he should have in August at home then the respective rerurns from spurs players would have been higher and that of there competition in those games lower.

NB: I appreciate your work but everything is relevant in this game and relevant changes several times during a match. Mutiply that by every team in a single gameweek and the answer is.... nobody knows...

Choupa moting is still living off his highly unlikely and un predicted return against Man Utd.

Richarlison looks good in an attacking position for watford. Thats it. Analysing beyond that may be a waste of time.

      Thanks anyway

If you haven't activated the wc this gw, anyone had a proper look at other fixtures before christmas where it could be optional using it? Obviously if your team all of a sudden is in shambles with injures etc you'd have to use it right away, but with some planning and luck, when's your plan of using it? Without much effort, a quick look at the ticker from GW 14 - a lot of blue boxes for Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Palace (lol), maybe even Arsenal and Everton as well. Could be an option?

    Thoughts on this WC?

    Fabi, Elliot
    Davies, monreal, mee, Lowe, 4.0
    Hazard, sterling, choupo, RLC, surman
    Lukaku, Jesus, Kane

Can spread more cash if I get salah or cour instead of hazard but fixtures looks great for Chelsea

I am calm but the longer I have to think about transfers then the more chance I'll end up doing a silly move

He wont be back for CP. Being on a bike is one of the initially phases after a hamstring injury. If there were videos/pics of him jogging id be more convinced.

    Do I...

    A) Try fit in Chelsea somewhere
    B) Wait until Morata is fit and get him

    Foster / Elliot
    Davies / Monreal / Jones / Cedric / Mbemba
    Eriksen / Salah / Sterling / RLC / Carroll
    Kane / Jesus / Vardy

    Cheers.

Look at previous season stats - so Kane will be in all season, didnt budge when he had Aug blanks. Holding firm is key. Vardy another with good stats, bargain at 8.5. I can then live with Joselu at 6.5 as a part gamble. The dilemma i avoid is 3 premium strikers, creates issue of who to captain & whether bonus points might be available elsewhere. The BPS is helpful for highlighting performance where not always reflected in scores but potential along with upcoming fixtures.

England without Rooney, Jones, Wilshere etc. I'm not at all excited. Would rather rewatch Peaky Blinders.

In Scotland, TV is only showing England as it has done all through qualifying.

But then, that's what happens when you vote to not be recognised as a country in your own right I suppose
