Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Thursday

A late Harry Kane goal spares a dreadful England, while the complexities of qualification in South America could have a knock-on effect when the Fantasy calendar resumes in eight days’ time.

Here are the notes from last night’s World Cup matches.

Kane again to the rescue

Harry Kane scored for the fourth consecutive match to win a woeful match for lifeless England.

The Spurs striker now has 14 goals from his last nine matches in all competitions, with a late winner against Slovenia confirming England’s qualification for next year’s World Cup in Russia.

His 37.5% Fantasy Premier League ownership will now be hoping that Sunday’s dead rubber in Lithuania will tempt England boss Gareth Southgate to rest Kane, but that seems unlikely should the forward retain the captain’s armband.

Man City’s Kyle Walker provided the assist on a night when England laboured to break down their well-organised opponents.

His club team-mate Raheem Sterling covets a central role in Pep Guardiola’s side and was handed a chance to prove he was worthy of just that when Southgate elected to play him behind Kane.

But Sterling fluffed his lines, too often caught in possession in key areas, although he was unlucky not to open the scoring as England finally came to something approaching life in the second-half.

Few players impressed on the night, although the in-form Marcus Rashford caught the eye before the break with a display of pace and intent from the left-wing, and Joe Hart ended up with the man of the match award for a fine double save towards the end of an otherwise unedifying night.

England will travel to Russia with the hopes of a nation towards the past caring end of the scale.

Fantasy managers will be rather more invested in Sunday’s trip to Vilnius as it provides Southgate with a chance to experiment with his line-up and rest key assets for what will be a busy October once the domestic, and then European, schedule kicks in again.

Kane’s pitch time could be all the more pertinent with Romelu Lukaku now
ruled out of Belgium’s clash with Bosnia on Saturday.

The Man United striker has failed to train all week due to an ankle complaint but is optimistic of making Tuesday’s encounter with Cyprus.

It is thought that the issue is the same injury that cast doubt over Lukaku’s start against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 7. Reports state that the striker had painkilling injections to overcome the problem and he completed 90 minutes against the Eagles. Manchester United are said to be in constant contact with the Belgium FA over the Lukaku’s condition.

However, Fantasy managers are now left with a situation where there are doubts – of varying degrees – over the availability of the three top-scoring FPL forwards – Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Morata and Lukaku – ahead of next weekend’s deadline.

South American Plot Twists

A number of Premier League stars, most notably Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Man City defender Nicolas Otamendi, are in for a fraught final World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

With the top four South American teams going through automatically to the finals in Russia, and the fifth into a play-off against New Zealand, only Brazil have already qualified.

Six teams below them are now fighting it out for the four places remaining.

Uruguay, at home to Bolivia next, need just a draw to guarantee their place. Chile and Colombia also have their fate in their own hands, but the former must travel to Brazil and the latter to Peru, with both needing a win to secure qualification for sure.

Argentina are currently out of the qualification places, and will have to win at altitude in Ecuador. If they do, they will be assured of at least a play-off place. Draw and they’re relying on other results to go their way, lose and they’re out.

All of that sets up a huge night for Sanchez’s Chile in Brazil.

The Arsenal midfielder scored the winner in a 2-1 win over Ecuador last night, adding to his back-to-back assists over the last couple of Gameweeks. Although he’s back in action on Wednesday morning, Sanchez’s trip to Watford isn’t until next Saturday evening, giving him a little more time to recuperate.

Otamendi is in for a do or die tie in Ecuador before travelling back for a 3pm home match against Stoke City two Saturdays from now. He played the full 90 minutes, as did Man United’s stand-in keeper Sergio Romero, as Argentina were held to a goalless draw at home to Peru last night.

Whatever the outcomes for their national teams, both Sanchez and Otamendi are likely to be drained by a fraught international break.

Brazil drew 0-0 in Bolivia, with Man City’s Gabriel Jesus playing the full 90 minutes of a match played at altitude.

Philippe Coutinho had a poor evening and was subbed off after 66 minutes, Chelsea’s Willian replacing him.

Fernandinho was given an eight-minute run-out towards the end of the fixture, while Roberto Firmino was an unused sub, as was Ederson.

David Ospina and Davinson Sanchez played the full 90 minutes in Colombia as they lost 2-1 to Paraguay.

Spurs defender Sanchez has started the last four matches for his club but might struggle to make that a fifth, at home to Bournemouth next Saturday, as he will have been involved in a winner-takes-all clash in Peru early on Wednesday morning.

West Brom striker Salomon Rondon started and finished Venezuela’s 0-0 draw at home to Uruguay.

Elsewhere…

Bournemouth’s Josh King scored twice and provided an assist as Norway romped to an 8-0 win in San Marino.King was, however, forced off with a knock, with the Norwegian media reporting that he had an ice pack on his knee after his withdrawal.

Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen got the winner in Denmark’s 1-0 victory in Montenegro. Both he and Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel played the full 90 minutes.

Germany eased past Northern Ireland 3-1, with Leroy Sane and Emre Can given second-half run-outs. Shkodran Mustafi and Antonio Rudiger were unused substitutes.

Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans, Chris Brunt and Steven Davis played the full 90 minutes for Northern Ireland, with McAuley providing the assist for the home side’s late consolation goal.

Scotland’s last-gasp win over Slovakia included 90 minutes for Andrew Robertson, James Morrison and Matty Phillips. Darren Fletcher played 78 minutes before being replaced by James McArthur.

Brighton keeper Matty Ryan and Huddersfield midfielder Aaron Mooy started and finished Australia’s 1-1 draw with Syria.

Bournemouth striker Lys Mousset scored as France’s U21 side won their Euro U21 qualifier 2-1 against Montenegro.

    WildCard ACTIVE!

Had Lukaku all season, dropped him out due to injury concern and Utd's fixtures, games against the top teams with Mourinho in charge tend to be shut up shop and grind it out, can't see many goals over the next few weeks. I see Fellaini from set pieces being just as dangerous in these games.
Other selections that might seem odd are based on underlying stats and upcoming fixtures, Shaqiri being the main example.

    Forster
    Stones - Bavies - Mee - Naughton
    Hazard - Silva - Fellaini
    Kane - Jesus - Batshuayi

    Elliot - Cresswell - Shaqiri - Carroll

    0.1 ITB

    G2G?

Well, when you put it like that, I do prefer the latter.

The trouble is Lukaku's ownership, if he delivers it will hurt.

    10. Twisted Saltergater
      • 14 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

Given his age, I don't really know if he's an attacking midfielder type or a forward with striking instincts. Pep was using him in support of Aguero, right?

I hope he can lead the line ok and not get marked out of games. I don't have Kane at the minute so he needs to be a captain option for me.

      1. Nascimento
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

I think he'll end up playing as a main striker but Pep feels more comfortable with that sort of pressure on Aguero. While Pep's not got the option I think he'll trust Jesus to lead the line and I would (and have) trust him as a captain.

Any Watford fans around? I'm interested to know how they work as a team and whether the Man City result was a blip or is always likely to happen due to the individuals they have?

With Arsenal travelling there for the late Sat kick off, I'm tempted with Sanchez(c).

They have been very solid for the most part this season Twisty, but they had no fit defenders v City and then City scored two offside goals which kind of blew the game out of the water.

If Marriappa is the best they have available v Arsenal their is every chance they will get steamrolled again but if they have britos/prodl etc back then they will be a different proposition.

Probably a rebuke from Silva for Britos stupid red card before his ban. Might have just been saying you won't get in this team unless you work on your discipline?

Since you already suffered the drop (Morata) and rise (Jesus) might as well wait for the second game of brazil. Just keep your eye on http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/ atm jesus +40% and Morata -40%. If he doesn't get injured it looks like one of the best transfers, because Morata is likely out for more than a month.

To those selling Mkhi just remember it should be 2 in 4 blanks rather than 3 in 4. He played a through ball to Lukaku vs Stoke, who messed it up and finished the rebound. I'm inclined to give him the next couple of games. Watched some of his highlights to refresh the mind as opinions etc can affect perception of things and he didn't look half as bad as the stats suggest. Many of us will be selling United's playmaker for Sterling, Mkhi has set pieces and Lukaku to assist, that equals points. Admittedly fixtures are turning but Mkhi may well play a part in goals they score vs the big teams. I think I'll reassess after Huddersfield as for me any move now will involve a hit and it will be very difficult to get Mkhi back if I sell him prematurely.

Liverpool's form is unpredictable, but on average, they are one of the most attacking sides in which Salah gets a healthy share of goal involvement. In fact they often play their best football against the best defences

I think many want to keep because it's hard to justify moves to other mids who also have huge. May as well save FTs if the decision is a 50/50 call.

On the other hand, I don't have Salah, and that does not make me a sad panda by any means.

There are plenty if reasons to keep Salah. There are an equal number of reasons to sell. Guess it depends on the ditection you want to take, how many hits you are prepared to make and the availability of an alternative albeit (at a cheaper price if possible). I have Salah.

Hoeever the points potential this season has shifted to defense and attack. That is a fact. Whether this continues to be the case, no one knows. But in orddr to prepare oneself for a shift of focus then I need to free up cash and that is where Salah may end up losing out in my team. I dont have a wildcard and as such I may be forced to move sooner thus ridding myself of premium mids of which i have a few. Silva Eriksen Salah in particular.

I think it is more a change of strategy than anything else the reason people are selling. In an ideal world he would stay but...

It will be interesting to see what people will do if Hazard and Sanchez start firing. For now though Salah may be a luxury too far. Defense calling

I agree with the Hazard/Sanchez comment. I’ve saved my wildcard as I do most years for later than most, purely due to that above fact. If one of them does start firing most people will have to take huge hits to get them or miss the bandwagon completely.

I can’t see Sanchez doing anywhere near as much as last year out on the wing however I do think Haz & Morata will be a great pairing when fit & amass huge hauls

Is anyone else looking at Delph (4.5) as a Carroll replacement? He played well (defensively) against chelsea, so he might keep his spot at lwb. He only finished 3 BPS behind the 2-Bonus, whilst not getting CS bonus. Surely against worse teams he'll get forward much more like mendy did? And in the next 5 outta 8 i'm playing 3-4-3 likely, but Carroll has produced only blanks. Or was Danilo injured vs chelsea or something that pep went for Delph? Also I already have RLC and I'm keeping him and don't want to spend any money so I can do Vardy>Morata when he's back.

Thoughts on these transfers for -4?

        Ake/Suttner -> Wimmer
        Mkhi -> Sterling/Sane
        Eriksen -> Hazard

I have Davies and Kane to cover Spurs, and wanted Hazard. I think I could do Suttner over Ake, but rather not invest too much in a 4th defender.

Can't you get Hazard without losing Aké? Mkhi>Sterling enough? Because i'm looking at getting Aké in after next 2 gw's, if they show signs of improvement against stoke (and perhaps keep Spurs at 2/3-0). Aké is a Baps-magnet, which he proved last game yet again with his 9 points return. Also Eriksen is in fine form, only last GW didn't produce but he just got back from illness. Smashing in the goals for Denmark and setting up Kane like last season.
