Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Sunday

The Fantasy Premier League’s biggest midfield guns give it their Sunday best across Europe and Africa, while Harry Kane is at it again for an otherwise drab England.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s World Cup qualifiers.

Big hitters wield their influence

The four most popular midfielders in Fantasy Premier League were all in action last night.

And all four brought cheer, of varying sizes, to their owners.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (34.1%) hit a historic double for Egypt as they qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 27 years with a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Congo.

The Reds winger converted a 95th-minute penalty to win a tense match in which Premier League players Ahmed Hegazi, Ramadan Sobhi, who played 87 minutes, and Mohamed Elneny also featured, with West Brom centre-half Hegazi having one effort cleared off the line.

Salah now has seven goals in all competitions this season, but back-to-back matches against Manchester United and Chelsea will test a player whose 16.7% conversion rate is the second-worst among the top eight scorers from midfield.

United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan (32.3%) opened the scoring for Armenia in their 1-1 draw away in Kazakhstan.

Mkhitaryan is the fourth most sold player since Gameweek 7 came to an end, with 101,000+ managers seeking pastures new as United’s schedule also stiffens – Jose Mourinho’s men face Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea over their next four fixtures.

Spurs’ Dele Alli (27.4%) is just below Mkhitaryan in the transfers-out table as more than 96,000 FPL bosses have reacted to a barren spell in which he hasn’t scored in the league since Gameweek 3.

Alli did provide two assists in Gameweek 6’s win over West Ham and followed that up with another one for England last night as he was fouled for the decisive penalty in the Three Lions’ underwhelming 1-0 win in Lithuania.

Spurs’ schedule is another that is turning tough – BOU LIV mun CRY ars – and trust in Alli is suffering as a result.

The same can’t be said for Alli’s team-mate Christian Eriksen (25.7%), who scored for Denmark for the second consecutive match, converting a penalty in the Danes’ 1-1 draw with Romania.

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen and Leicester City keeper Kasper Schmeichel played the full 90 minutes alongside Eriksen, with FPL managers divided as to the midfielder’s appeal – nearly 44,000 have moved him out this week, with another 36,000+ acquiring his services.

It’s Kane…again

One Spurs player seemingly impervious to the matter of fixtures is Harry Kane.

The in-form striker scored the winner in Lithuania – his second goal of the international break – and also has six goals from his last four league matches.

That run has persuaded over 280,000 managers to make him FPL’s most bought player of the Gameweek, although he played the full 180 minutes of October’s international schedule.

England boss Gareth Southgate chopped and changed over that break, with the 14.0%-owned Man City full-back Kyle Walker given the night off in Vilnius. Spurs’ Kieran Trippier (4.3%) took his place.

On the other flank, West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell played at left wing-back as the 11.4%-owned Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand returned to his club as a precaution following recent back problems.

The 8.7%-owned United striker Marcus Rashford did start both matches, however, as did Walker’s team-mate John Stones (7.9%).

But another City man, Raheem Sterling (6.1%) watched on from the bench.

Mustafi adds to Gunners’ concerns…

Arsenal centre-half Shkodran Mustafi lasted only 36 minutes of Germany’s 5-1 win over Azerbaijan before limping off with a thigh problem.

German coach Joachim Low appears pessimistic on the prognosis for the defender.

“I think Mustafi has a muscle tear. It looks a bit more serious. A hamstring injury to a muscle tear, we have to wait for the exact diagnosis, but he’ll probably be out for a long time.”

With Laurent Koscielny missing the Gameweek 7 victory over Brighton with ongoing Achilles problems, Arsene Wenger’s defence is suddenly appearing uncertain ahead of their visit to Watford next weekend.

The Gunners have kept four consecutive clean sheets prior to that Gameweek 8 trip, with Nacho Monreal collecting over 75,000 new owners as the third most signed defender over the break.

Calum Chambers is also recovering from a hip problem, so it would appear that Rob Holding (4.7) is set to retain his start in the back three should Mustafi – as expected – be sidelined for a sustained period.

Emre Can and Antonio Rudiger scored for the Germans, while Leroy Sane provided an assist in a convincing victory.

The Liverpool and Man City players started and finished the match, while Chelsea’s Rudiger came on in the 22nd minute.

Elsewhere…

A Chris Brunt own goal proved decisive in Norway’s 1-0 win over Northern Ireland.

Bournemouth’s Josh King missed the fixture with a hamstring problem picked up in Norway’s 8-0 drubbing of San Marino on Thursday, but Brunt, Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans and Steven Davis all played the full match for the visitors.

Andrew Robertson, Darren Fletcher and Matty Phillips started and finished Scotland’s 2-2 draw in Slovenia, while Crystal Palace’s James McArthur played 79 minutes.

Swapping Brady to Choupo next gw if I can still afford him

    A) Good move
    B) waste of ft, chopping and changing cheap mids won't benefit you much

Completely depends on the rest of your team. Both Burnely and Stoke have decent fixtures though.

Current set up has Salah Silva Mkhi Brady in a 343 so will need to change things structurally to do that, Brady seems to be a troll so not sure that would work, scored points in the 2 fixtures I would bench him for

Absolutely. I feel like at that level you wana be saying ok, let's just back my horse unless I have 2ft and have 1 to waste. LOTS of crosses coming in from Brady, main creative asset in that Burnley team. One has to go in off Wood soon!

The worry would be that he ends up scoring points in the City fixture given the matches in which his points have come this season

Yeah, but Choupo looks much more attacking and has a run of decent fixtures. Saving the transfer might be more valuable but I'm tempted by the switch.

    RMWCT please guys.

Pope - Has very high save/goals ratio - BAPS magnet - Burnley very good defensively

Elliot - Cheap/Newcastle Good fixtures and rotates well with Pope

Azpi - Chelsea's fixtures - cheaper than Alonso who is on 3yc's/better option than Luiz who is also on 3 yc's

Walker - Great city fixtures/attacking potential - Nailed

Van Dijk - Controversial pic but BAPS magnet - set piece threat - Southampton have good short term fixtures

Ward - Is double up on Burnley defence a little too much?

Wimmer - Rotates well with Ward - worried whether he'll be nailed when Martins Indi comes back, but unsure of better options?

Hazard - My plan is to take a risk on Hazard for 2 weeks - if he does well I'll keep, if not easy transfer to Salah/Coutinho for GW10 for Huddersfield

Sterling - Another slight punt as he isn't nailed but very good recent Prem form in a very attacking city team

Richarlison - Great value for the ££££

Chupo Moting - Very good touches/shots in the box/has been reverse OOP until the previous game

    RLC: Best 4.5 M option?

    Kane - Essential

Jesus - Nailed now Kun is injured - City's attacking potential is through the roof

Joselu - Would rather Vardy - but I'm unable to have such a strong defence if I do so. Very good shots in the box - hopefully continues his good goalscoring form.

I'm with you - maybe I can generate funds by going Walker,Azpi and VVD to Stones, Luiz and Cedric/4.5.

I've always been rigid with 3-4-3 feel however that defenders give you better ppg/£ than attackers which is why I want to go defence heavy.

As a City fan, I am baffled to see Sterling in so many lineups.

He is not nailed, and whilst I like Sterling he is so hit and miss and frustrating to watch as a fan. Personally I'll be steering clear, Jesus is the only one I'd go for besides the defence.

Not even Silva, although seems he has turned a corner this year in terms of Fantasy point - but better options around the same price (or slightly higher).

If Sane can nail down a spot, he is the one.

He is the sort of player that you may be lucky with and get a brace - then rotation and nothing for 3 weeks until you sell and then he will score off the bench ... not what I want and would drive me mad

I like my front line FPL players to be nailed and not a place holder for returning better players

Think the vacancy in many teams is in midfield, though, with Mkhi perhaps the fall guy and people eyeing up City. A good proportion of those who had Kun didn't move to Jesus (myself included.... and probably short-sightedly) due to the Chelsea fixture.

Do you not think, though, that in terms of short-term impact when Kun is out that selfish Ras could nab you a goal or two over the next 3? Interesting to hear your thoughts - Bilva also hanging around and can always play in RW, but seems like Pep favours him in the UCL?

Sane I do like, and is being overlooked a bit - Silva is the creator (and highly owned) and Sterling is the cheap one who takes lots of shots. Sane a bit more of an all-rounder. Do you think Leroy is the most "nailed" of the S' after Dilva?

      1. Badger Badger Mushroom Mush…
        • 7 Years

I just think Sterling makes the wrong decisions, he's in form and Pep actually likes him - but still, not for me. Like I say,he is a frustrating player as a fan - both in FPL and real-life.

Personally I'd rather play KDB in that front role with Sane and Jesus. Leaving Silva, and possibly Delph and Fernandinho in the centre.

I'd say right now, Sane is the most nailed. I think Pep is doing with Bernando S what he did with Sane last year, slowly integrating him. Remember Sane did not play much before Xmas last season.

Hear what you're saying on KdB. Every time I've watched him I'm struck by just what a great footballer he is. He's a bit like his fellow Belgian Eden Hazard (wtf is in the water over there), two boys you'd want on your FIFA street team for sure

Honestly, I don't _want_ to own him, but feel I must, at that price, with so many likely minutes, in a side likely to score so many goals over the next several.

Seems justified, 4th highest price, 6th highest score. Only 2/5 ahead of him are cheaper.

6th highest, but 11 points behind 4th highest. 11 midfielders have scored more than him. Terrible

lol at your logic comparing Mids & Attackers when their points are different.

4th highest price, 6th highest points. Suggest it'll converge upon the mean.

Why does it matter if their points are different? At the end of the day, we're paying for points. So it's points per million, whichever form they come in. Even if a defender offers better value for money with clean sheets than a striker with goals, I'll go for the defender.

You can't compare mids & forwards on points. Goals yes, points no. Justification of points is relative to ones competitors not the field. When most are going big 3, it's clear that he's against Kane, Kaku & Morata for the third place. Factor fixtures & pens in, and he could easily catch them in no time.

Most going for big 3 doesn't make it right. I personally think it's poor value for money and a fundamental error and will never go for it. So I don't care if most do.

So for me, it's just second place. Form and player quality >>>> fixtures and pens. Don't even begin comparing him with Kane, Lukaku and Morata.

Multiple people have gone against you (especially on the big 3). Community has spoken.

City are the most attacking team in the league, have a day off saying he's not comparable.

Lol don't care about the community's decisions. I'm ahead of a lot of them on points, with my wildcard still available.

Too bad you don't get points for City being the most attacking team. Only what Jesus gets. 6 points against Watford with an offside goal 😆

Because it's off topic. This was about Jesus relative to his price.

If you were extending the value for money arguement across player types, you must consider that there are no playing 4.5ml strikers, costs you an extra 1ml.

he was saying that 11 midfielders have outscored Jesus and cost quite a bit less - so relatively Jesus has not been good value so far...which is true. No-one is forcing you to play 3 big-hitters up front, so it's not like comparing apples to oranges at all. Also if you want a playing bench, there are fwd options at 5.0.

That being said, Jesus surely has higher points potential now that Aguero is injured, so not sure it matters anyway at the moment.

    Mkhi > Richarlison/Chopa-Moting
    allows me to do
Firmino > Jesus/Morata the following week.

    Team would be:

    Elliot
    Davies, Jones, Naughton, Mee
    Eriksen, Salah, Richarlison
    Kane, Lukaku, Jesus

    Foster, Carroll, King, Mbemba

Problem is losing Mkhi when united have decent fixtures?

I’d keep Mkhi even with the fixtures as when Utd play with wingbacks against the top teams, he’ll be pushed right up alongside Lukaku.

Something a bit different to the norm: a solid defence and though no attacking double/triple-ups, instead (arguably) the most explosive player from the top teams!

Haha, will probably captain Kane most of the time... I think defence is decent with Man U, Spurs & Arsenal defenders, plus Brighton & Newcastle who have been pretty tight at the back (2 clean sheets apiece - NUFC only conceding 6 goals in 7 games, Brighton 9 in 7).

Might go for Fellaini over Can and bring in Loftus-Cheek for A.King next week, as both have greater attacking threat (and Marouane only looks to be out for 2 weeks)

Vardy nailed on, fire and forget - next 4 are pretty decent for him (WBA swa EVE stk), all games in which you'd not be shocked if he gets you a goal or two.

If you're pre-WC and chasing, there's certainly a case for a Bats punt. Worry would be - as he did last season - AC opts for Haz in false 9 with Pedro and Willian flanking him. We don't know if Conte trusts Bats yet - let's see if in the press conference he gives us any more info. If he doesn't answer, then I think you just do Vardy

I think Firmino will play, but I don't think he will score. Vardy seems a sensible pick, but I think the Shakespeare effect is starting to take hold - i.e. they're regressing under him. Wouldn't be that surprised if Vardy blanks in 3 out of those 4 fixtures. Batshuyi is the maverick pick, but has actually got excellent form against awful sides (he frequently scores in the league cup, scored in most matches towards the end of last season too), of which Palace are one. I'm leaning towards bringing him in. It would just be short term until the next international break though, so an exit strategy needs to be in place for him too.

That's true, but Individual has a good point - Bats might not get the chance. I also understand Holmses line of thought, but I feel it might be too early for the risky moves (at least for me).
