The Community Round-Up

Wildcard timing, the form of premium strikers and the fallout from the international break dominate this week’s discussions as the community eagerly anticipates the return of domestic action.

Our round-up also takes in the latest community articles, with our resident scribes full of advice on the best players to hand the captaincy to and where to find clean sheets in Gameweek 12.

Meanwhile, our Members’ Area statisticians have been busy gathering the latest data on teams with a strong run of fixtures over the coming weeks.

The Community Articles

The form and fixture data, analysed by YMA, strongly backs Harry Kane for the armband ahead of the Spurs striker’s trip to Arsenal. However, as the Career of Fame hall of fame top five, being tracked by Top Marx, found out in Gameweek 11 when he blanked at home to Crystal Palace, it can be costly to put too much faith in the Spurs talisman.

The crowd are also anticipating strong attacking returns from Spurs, but believe only one team is capable of keeping a clean sheet over the next set of fixtures, says Hutch_James.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Among the key lessons learned from our analysis of the Hall of Fame top ten managers is that Wildcard timing is key, with those who used this chip early missing out on Manchester City’s upturn in form.

Dugout followed this up by inviting Fantasy managers to take part in his survey of their ranks and when they played their Wildcard. After sifting through around 100 responses, he has been able to reveal whether the wider community’s experience mirrored that of this elite group.

All of the Hall of Fame top ten have kept their Free Hit chip in their pocket, with a deployment around the second half of the season blank fixtures likely. But Rhinos wonders whether using them during a double Gameweek may prove more lucrative.

Key issues for those Wildcarding this week, according to Jacky Boy, include whether to seize the opportunity to triple up on the array of premium strikers who have strong fixtures on the horizon.

Among those under consideration is Manchester United marksman Romelu Lukaku, who has split the community between those who have been left unimpressed by his failure to find the net since Gameweek 7, and those who think he will return to form in style with Newcastle’s visit.

Manchester City’s strike duo of Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero are also among the heavy-hitters under consideration. But when we asked for your views on the best Sky Blues cover it is their midfield where most of the interest lies.

Rotation is a key factor when deciding on which of Pep Guardiola’s troops to pick and, as FPL Freddo pointed out, this makes it difficult to captain their Argentine forward in particular.  Hobolicious is also unsure whether Aguero is worth handing the armband to this season.

There has been less chat this week around Kane, with his team-mate Christian Eriksen instead attracting attention as his hat-trick against Ireland took Denmark to the World Cup in Russia next year. Jinswick wonders whether the 70,000+ FPL managers to ditch the midfielder may regret that move in light of his international exploits.

Another player to catch the eye on international duty is Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, who impressed in both England friendlies against Germany and Brazil. Wakey believes the defender could be a strong option for home games, particularly as he looks set to continue at right-back with Nathaniel Clyne sidelined for another three months after undergoing back surgery this week.

The Reds defender was handed his England debut, against Germany, after coming on for the injured Phil Jones, who will out for Manchester United at home to Newcastle this weekend, according to Jose Mourinho. Given the previous concerns surrounding the centre-back’s fitness, we asked his owners whether he is still worth keeping ahead of the busy Christmas schedule.

With Crystal Palace’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek also impressing for England, we also canvassed your views on how Fantasy managers can best use the ‘eye-test’ to assess Fantasy potential.

-Agüero is fit and their best striker. Looked really good for Argentina
      - Leicester (A) is easily the hardest fixture in the next 3-4 games for City so Pep should play his best squad. Can't think of a reason for the league's top scorer to be benched against them
      - City have already qualified in the CL and face Feyonoord at home next. City beat them 4-0 away and they also have 0 points in their group, can see players like Bernardo Silva, Jesus & Gundogan etc. getting more minutes there

Interesting to see Smalling in. Going pretty under the radar from what I have seen. Has started the last five (from memory), 5.3M, a couple of great fixtures ahead of him. Solid pick.

I would prefer Azpi to Alonso, but that's a matter of taste really.

      Nice team.

Chelseas fixtures are the sort where Alonso plays LW all game so I'm hoping for some goals.

Smalling Is a bit iffy. But he has been starting and Utd have been keeping cleanies. Hopefully it works out!

The Azpi-Morata combo has been great though and he just Hoover's up those baps.

Smalling is one a lot will avoid but he was already playing with Jones and then held his place when Bailly returned, with Mou accommodating all three. I think he's going to keep that spot, particularly with Jones body starting to present the usual issues

Big fan of your defence. Looks very good, except that I'd prefer a little more room for manoeuvring over the holiday period. I understand your reasoning, but maybe Alonso->Azpi gives you enough to upgrade Wimmer to someone you'd be more willing to play?

A bit lazy with the math, but I'd be looking at upgrading Daniels/Mee/Duffy to one of the City/Spurs/Arsenal boys. I would even consider the Utd double-up with Smalling... Hm..

(My strategy this season has been top- and bottom-heavy, with a somewhat neglected midfield, and it's worked out great so far, but past performance doesn't always predict the future etc etc)

How crazy is it to do P. Jones -> S. Dann?

Bear with me, but the only other option I can think of is Daniels, and I don't get the hype. I'm not a Roy fan, but I expect he'll steady the CP ship, and Dann has always been a threat.

Crystal Palace' fixtures: [ EVE, STK, bha, wba, BOU ]
Bournemouth's fixtures: [ HUD, swa, BUR, SOU, cry ]

I need a player this week, because I have Otamendi out too, and my team relies on its defence pretty heavily.

    Pope [// Elliot]
    Monreal // Azpi // Moreno [// Jones(!) // Otamendi(!)]
    Salah // Sterling(*) // Richarlison // TCarrol(boo) [// ORomeu]
    Kane // Aguero(*) // Firmino
    (1FT and 0.0 itb)

Any other suggestions? Currently ranked 176 overall and starting to lose my nerve...

    (A) Stick with Jones and ride out this week
    (B) Jones->Daniels
    (C) Jones->Dann
    (D) ???

I've went for Smalling but that is a bit punty. You're obviously playing 4 at the back so it makes it a trickier move to find a 5m Def to play every week. To play him every week you really want someone from a top side, which at 5m is tough. Maybe Stones?

          1. Stykes
            • 11 Years
            6 years, 5 months ago

I'd be very happy with that, but I bought Jones at 5.0, so I'm 0.1 short for that move. Exactly 5.2 to spend if I don't take a hit 🙁

Starting to think I might just take this week on the chin...

I’m on A, if he’s out next week you can make the decision then. think sterling and kun may come on at some stage and is the get 20 mins they can still score.

Exactly. I'm still very much on-board with playing 4 or even 5 at the back, but my crisis of sorts this week exposes the weakness in my team.

      Congratulations on a great rank!

I think it depends on how much you want Jones moving forward - and possibly how much you paid for him.

I think the issue with both Dann and Daniels is the fact we are mostly relying on fixtures over form. Either is a punt on both teams improving - although the combination of Roy and Sakho might indicate clean sheets.

Another dullard option might be to double up on Burnley. At least you know what you are getting with them....

      1. Stykes

Cheers, and for the thoughtful response.

I paid 5.0, and like I said: he's served me very well up to now, so I'm hesitant to let him go. At 5.2 (my selling price), there really aren't many options. And downgrading to Dann/Daniels/{Burnley} means ditching a strategy that has worked really well for me (4/5 at the back most weeks).

I do share your sentiments that the Roy/Sakho combination might be worth something, though. I'm a Liverpool fan who hugely overrates Sakho though, so my opinion on the matter is somewhat twisted.

Having typed all of that out, I think I might take this week on the chin in the hope that Jones recovers. If I let him go it'll be extremely difficult to get someone like him back in (but then I'm expecting a very underwhelming GW, which also seems like suicide).

A downgrade of Abraham to Niasse would enable you to get a 4.5 defender or so and a 4.5 mid.

Still undecided on the armband. It’s been on Salah all week. It’s just too easy to leave it on Kane though. I think both will do well. Soton aren’t what they were and Salah is well rested and has the most shots at home..

Who are plumping for this week?!

    1. Jafalad

Kane. I'm going to leave it on him all season. He'll be the top scorer in the game and these are the games you need to back him.

I don’t have Lukaku, not yet got Morata(coming in for Firmino) so it’s a straight choice of two for me. I think all three players should get into double figures this week.

  25. Geordienufc1

I'm going out so last chance to talk me out of this WC team. Not my ideal side, I've been thrown a bit by Jones' injury, but it'll have to do for now I think.

    DDG | Speroni
    Azpi | Mee | Moreno | Dunk | Francis
    Salah | Sane | Sterling | Richarlison | RLC
    Kane | Lukaku | Niasse

Plan is to move Lukaku to Morata in a couple of GW's time, and use the million odd that that move will gain me as necessary. Perhaps to get rid of Francis, or upgrade Niasse if it turns out he's not starting.

    Final thoughts? 🙂

Not keen on Dunk or Francis. But otherwise not bad.

Why not Yedlin? Newcastle fan. Attacking. 4.4m. Nailed. We are defensive. What's not to like As a Geordie?

      1. Geordienufc1
        • 10 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

Haha true, he is another I've considered, and I have liked what I've seen as a fan this season. I mainly had Francis because of the fixtures. I'm also a little worried Yedlin will get himself sent off, he was very lucky to escape a 2nd yellow a few weeks ago. Though I suppose that's probably overthinking it. Thanks for the suggestion, I might switch it 🙂

No Eriksen a concern and Niasse is too lightweight.

I'd rather lose Sterling for Erik and Niasse for Abrahams/Vardy.

I'm no Lukaku fan so little point arguing that one.

      1. Geordienufc1
        • 10 Years

Cheers, a fair assessment. As a Newcastle fan I'd love a Lukaku blank this week, my decision to include him over Morata (at least temporarily) is largely fear-based.

Wouldn't be able to find the funds for those suggested upgrades, though I agree I'd prefer them in an ideal world 🙂

No need for Niasse, enough great budget defs and mids to have 15 starters (though maybe one 3.9 def)

Fair call, I may be proven wrong on Niasse. I don't think Everton have too many other options until January, so I think he'll play, but if it turns out he's not I could use the funds from the planned Lukaku to Morata switch to boost him up to Tammy.

Ye I think providing you beef up the defence at some point it’s good. as an emergency you can always downgrade azpi to a nailed Chelsea def if one emerges and that’s another bit of repair money

    Torn on my cap:

Sane - didn't play last international so more likely to start, great form

Morata - improving form and starting to look like getting big hauls

Kane - self explanatory but Ars could be tougher

Salah - scoring for fun but Soton generally pretty tight and only letting in max one goal per game by and large

Jesus - Kun question mark increases likelihood of starting but still not nailed.

On Sane(c), Salah vc at the moment
