Scout Notes – Kane Toils Again

Another underwhelming week for Spurs and their talismanic striker sows further seeds of doubt in the minds of Fantasy managers.

Our confused relationship with Harry Kane continues.

Today’s two-point display in the 1-1 draw at Watford followed back-to-back goals, which sounds reasonable enough.

But three blanks in the past five Gameweeks doesn’t cut the mustard when, at 12.8, you’re the most expensive player in Fantasy Premier League.

Some 59,740 managers paid the premium price to bring the striker in for Gameweek 15, while 857,000+ (15.9%) made him the weekend’s most-captained player.

All that hope came to nought as Kane managed just two shots – both from range, one a free kick – and a meagre two touches in the box.

It was left to Son Heung-min, assisted by Christian Eriksen, to spare Spurs’ blushes after Christian Kabasele had opened the scoring for the hosts from Tom Cleverley’s corner.

Returns for Mohamed Salah (5), Alvaro Morata (8) and, in particular, Eden Hazard’s 15-point haul will again call into question the merits of the Kane captaincy – even with Stoke City at Wembley next.

Spurs’ form is the major concern. They’ve hit just four goals – only Huddersfield and Swansea City have managed fewer – and earned a mere five points in the last six Gameweeks now.

Kane does have two of those goals, but the confidence seems to be leeching from Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

They’ve even lost the knack of making up for their deficiences at Wembley with results on the road – today’s draw was the first points they’ve earned away since Gameweek 7.

Kane is now experiencing sales, only Leroy Sane is suffering more, with owners either doing rage transfers or feeling that his 19 points from the last five Gameweeks is scant reward for that price tag.

The problem for some is that there remains no clear or in-form replacement, aside perhaps from Morata.

Romelu Lukaku now has just one goal from his last eight starts, while Man City’s stellar options are blighted by Pep Guardiola’s continued appetite for rotation.

The Kane to Morata move is the second most popular transfer taking place this evening. Interestingly, Roberto Firmino is the next most popular Kane replacement, as managers look to clear funds for midfield investment.

Spurs defence stretched

Spurs’ attack is stalling, their defence close to crisis.

Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier returned at full-back and, with the Champions League to come in midweek, they will likely feature at home to Stoke next Saturday.

But starts are simply not enough in a backline that’s kept one clean sheet in six matches.

And a red card for Davinson Sanchez – he’ll now miss the home fixtures with Stoke and Brighton and the massive trip to Man City – was the last thing a creaky defence needed while Toby Alderweireld remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Eric Dier will have to move back into the defence to cover for that, but it could get worse still – Jan Vertonghen picked up a yellow card at Vicarage Road and is now just one more caution away from suspension.

Richarlison stalls

Another player to see yellow was Watford’s Richarlison – his third of the season – which meant just a single point for the popular Brazilian.

He’s now delivered just an assist from the last three Gameweeks for his 20.4% ownership, although the underlying stats suggest no need to panic.

He’s actually had more penalty area touches than any other midfielder over that spell (25), as well as seven shots in the box.

Even so, there are cheaper in-form options in Pascal Gross (6.0) and Xherdan Shaqiri (6.1) than the 6.6-priced winger, who is suffering some sales, having steadily increased in ownership since Gameweek 7, as a result.

Elsewhere for Watford, centre-back Kabesele’s goal was his second in five Gameweeks, underlining his increased threat from set-pieces, despite delivering those goals from just four shots.

Do these moves sound good over next couple of weeks?

    Elliot > DDG
    Mustafi > Kabasele/Zeegelaar
    Wilson > DCL

Will have exact cash to do it as it stands.
    Any comments appreciated 🙂

Kidding of course. It's between Hazard and De Bruyne, with Hazard just edging it in my opinion. But then again it's not really possible to compare them to Courtois - is he a better goalkeeper than Hazard is a no. 10? Difficult to judge.

The season’a great so far, but not the last 2 GWs... Think to do Daniels > Mustafi, but have to monitor his injury. I could go for Monreal — it’s gon be his second spell in my team this season.

Hypothetical question but if you were to sell Kane, how would you plan to set up afterwards?

Go bench fodder and upgrade all across defence and 4th and 5th mid? Get Sanchez to leave an easy route back to Kane?

You are correct. In a draft team. When you factor in the fact that he costs north of 12.5m and you can't even regularly captain him then there are a whole load of players I would rather have right now.

If you're considering Sanchez you might as well stick with Kane. Is Sanchez outperforming Kane? Plus he's a midfielder. There is so many other midfielders who are better than Alexis.

I like it. I'd have to downgrade my defense to pull that off. Would have to wait until the next WC, otherwise, that's a slow process.

3-5-2 with Morata-DCL & one of Tammy, Wilson, Murray etc up front? Then a beast mode midfield of

      Haz, Salah, Coutinho, Pogba, Sané.

      Quite tempting actually

As already got haz, salah, morata, sterling, rich I like the Sanchez route, but not convinced with arsenal and had fingers burnt when Sanchez blanked at home to Swansea too.

Gonna hold kane for next two good games and then decide - who knows can haul easily if spurs form turns...

In my team It would be either:

Daniels, RLC, Kane > Kolasinac, Sane/Coutinho, Rooney
or Daniels, Shaqiri, Kane > Kola, Sane, Firmino

Given Shaqiri's current form, RLC's value, and littler information on Rooney under big Sam, happy to stick with Kane atm,

      This is tricky.

Would defo get rid pf get right now if one of Jesus/Aguero was injured.
But apart from that, dont see who Id rather have than Kane. Not Firmino, not Lacazette,... maybe Vardy? Had him earlier this season and wasnt that great tbh.

Could then downgrade Kane big time to beef up midfield BUT Salah, Hazard, Sterling, Richarlison and RLC seem to my like the current best picks in midfield, the best value for money. Owning Sanchez would be as frustrating as owning Kane.

What I could do is upgrade the defense/GKs, but then we are talking of several moves, with no easy route back to Kane.

Think I’ll just stick with him for a while longer

The question you have to ask yourself is if you can build a team that can outperform a Kane(C)-team, even if Kane should find form and deliver 7-8 ppg (which in fairness does seem unlikely with Spurs`current injuries and displays on the pitch).

      1. Pep says

I honestly feel you can. So much value aeverywhere on the pitch except the front line it seems

My thinking is that IF there are equally good captaincy options (e.g. Salah, Hazard) to rival Kane(C), then he is redundant.

Lets say you do Kane (7ppg) to DCL (4ppg), and spread the cash (7,6 mill) to optimize the rest of the squad. Can those 7,6 mill invested elsewere make up for the 3ppg lost (or whatever is your own ppg estimate)?

I am biting the bullet, shipped out Kane yesterday, and aiming for this team in 3 moves. Wish me luck 😀

      De Gea
      Alonso Otamendi Kolasinac
      Hazard Salah Sterling Richarlison Ramsey
      Morata Firmino

      (Elliot, DCL, Gomez, 4.0)

Could do 4.5 mid + Kane > Coutihno + Firmino to give :

      Morata / Firmino

      In a 3-5-2

I got rid last night for an 8 point hit. He's not providing value at the moment and I've got a frontline of Morata, Vardy and Quaner up top with a midfield of Hazard, Salah, Coutinho, Sterling and Ramsey. It might not work but it'll be fun to watch

Am I the only one thinking that selling Kane is crazy?

      Reasons:

      1. Excellent Fixtures
      Spurs next 9 fixtures:
STO BRI mci bur SOU WHA swa EVE sou
Only 1 of these is tough.
Granted Kane has a habit of struggling against the weaker teams in the league but surely there's points for the taking here.

      2. Rested in Europe
Spurs have already qualified for the next round of the Champions League so will most likely be rested on Thursday.

      3. No other stand out strikers
Other than Morata I don't see any other feasible options.
Lukaku (poor form), Man City (Jesus/Aguero rotation risk), Arsenal (Lacazette/Giroud not particularly in form or either nailed on, Lacazette is a fitness risk).

He has had a raft of excellent fixtures. Fixture after fixture. Watford should have been perfect for him and wasn't. At his price tag he needs to be comfortably in front of the rest and he isn't. He isn't worth 2m more than Morata.

Go 4-5-1 and you can get five midfielders who play in a more advanced role than their position and price point. With Salah and Hazard you would be playing 4-3-3 anyway but picking up extra points for goals and clean sheets. The premium forward party is over and everyone has a hangover.

      • 6 Years

If I did it I would upgrade RLC to a power mid and have 5 strong mids with Morata and another striker upfront.

He's got Stoke and Brighton to haul or that may happen.

Can see Hazard being the captain of choice for most soon so he'll have to start hauling or will tempt a lot to sell.
