Captain Sensible – Gameweek 16

A busy December rolls on as we brace ourselves for the second of seven Gameweeks across the calendar month.

We turn our attention to the armband conundrum next, first assessing the main captaincy contenders for Gameweek 16, before checking in on the Opta data and offering up a differential or two to consider ahead of tomorrow’s 11.30am deadline.

The Captain Poll

There’s a two-way tussle for our attentions at the top of Gameweek 16’s Captain Poll.

A Wembley Stadium encounter with Stoke City’s porous defence earns Harry Kane the slight advantage at the summit, with 31% backing.

Rested from midweek Champions League duties, the Spurs frontman boasts a fine record against Mark Hughes’ men, scoring six times in his last three encounters – including a hat-trick and assist in a 4-0 win at White Hart Lane last term.

Yet Kane’s toils at Spurs’ temporary home remains a big concern – he’s blanked five times and managed just one double-figure haul in seven in front of his own fans.

Eden Hazard has vied with Kane all week, earning over 26% of the votes cast as Chelsea make their way to West Ham – the only side to have conceded more goals (32 to 30) than the Potters this season.

The Belgian played from start to finish against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night, but looks set to be unleashed from the start against the ailing Hammers.

Five goals and two assists in his last five league starts makes for persuasive reading, with just 6% willing to back his team-mate Alvaro Morata, who has three goals and an assist over his last five by comparison.

It’s somewhat surprising that just 13% are prepared to back Mohamed Salah for a Merseyside derby encounter with Everton.

Granted, the Toffees arrive at Anfield on the back of consecutive clean sheets, yet, just like Hazard, the Liverpool winger has bagged three sets of double-figures in five.

The top scoring player in FPL, Salah has scored or assisted in five of six starts on home turf and faces a defence that’s shipped 28 goals so far.

Team-mate Philippe Coutinho (3%) looks an intriguing armband differential. The Brazilian’s 18-point return at Brighton last Saturday was his fourth double-digit tally in just eight league outings.

Furthermore, Coutinho’s first of three midweek goals against Spartak Moscow was converted from the spot, which suggests that he is now the Reds’ latest designated penalty taker.

Roberto Firmino (1%) is even lower down the Poll, despite producing five goals and two assists in his last four in all competitions.

Arsenal trio Alexis Sanchez, Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey travel to a Southampton outfit with a single clean sheet in ten Gameweeks.

The Chilean has netted in three of the last four Gameweeks, while Lacazette seems to have upped his attacking threat recently, supplying points against Man City, Spurs and Man United in the previous five.

Meanwhile, Ramsey continues to deliver points on a consistent basis – over the last seven Gameweeks, he’s supplied six sets of attacking returns and a pair of double-figure tallies.

The Manchester derby tempers our enthusiasm for both sides’ key players, though Man City pair Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling take strong form to Old Trafford, with three goals and two assists apiece over the last six Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Watford’s Richarlison has been excellent on the road ahead of a trip to Burnley, with a goal or assist in all but one of his seven away appearances.

I often wonder how often the phrasing of a question impacts the answer on here.

I've asked at different time in the past week, something like

'Jones - > Christensen or save FT' to which the answer has been mainly 'Save ft'

When I've asked 'who is a better option, Jones or Christensen?' The answer has been mainly Christensen

Should the answer not be pretty much the same? 😆 I still haven't decided if anyone wants to weigh in 😉

It's very valuable to carry a transfer and have two available in the next GW.

And when I have 2Fts available, should Jones - > Christensen be one of them in your opinion? 🙂

It all depends on your team. No ones team is ever perfect so you have to prioritise which upgrades would be most beneficial

Why would anyone tell you to save a FT when you want an assessment on two players?

      1. Viper

Because save a FT means keep Jones but yet Christensen is a better option so why would I save a FT when I could improve my team

This. No-one's going to tell you to save ft if it's not an option.

Christensen could be a better option but still not the best use of a ft.

      Depends on rest of team.

You've stumbled across an interesting part of behavioural economics.

Imagine you have a switch to control a train track. A runaway train is currently on a course to kill 10 people. If you press the switch, the train switches onto a different track that will only kill one person.

Would you press the switch? (These are the only options, press or don't press).

        1. noquarternt
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 6 months ago

You'd probably press the switch? Many studies show the majority of people press the switch.

Now think of a similar situation, the runaway train is going to kill 10 people, but you're on top of a bridge with a guy with a big backpack. You have no switch. If you push the guy off, the train will stop when he hits it (unlikely in reality of course, but in this model, his backpack is huge and he doesn't want to take it off).

You have the option to push him off or not push him off.

          What do you do?

          1. Viper
            • 14 Years

I wouldn't push him. Wouldn't have the heart

              • 8 Years
              6 years, 6 months ago

Exactly. Vast majority of people answer the same way.

What have we learnt? Even though on paper the decision is one life for ten lives in each case, people answer differently depending on the situation they find themselves in. They are different questions despite being essentially the same.

Hence the Save FT or Christensen/Jones.

Christensen is probably the better player (if you're on WC for example). But changing Jones to Christensen with your FT is not a huge priority and as such people will probably suggest to save.

Although if you could push Jones in front of the train...

      1. Viper
        • 14 Years
        6 years, 6 months ago

It isn't really though. Basically, I'd rather improve my team now than save a transfer, so is Jones - > Christensen going to improve my team? People seem to think it isn't worth it but yet Christensen is the preferred option between the two

        1. Rik Waller
          • 6 Years

I did Jones -> Christensen before last gw BUT at that point it wasn't clear when he would return and I needed a nailed defender (Davies owner still), not sure I would make that transfer now.

If you really need to burn a FT and have nothing better to do, maybe just go for it but I would try to find another way to get Christensen to be honest, both great options.

SCOUT PICKS CHALLENGE - GAMEWEEK 16

    Catching up...

    GW12 results: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/17116005
    GW13 results: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/17124458

    ****** WHAT IS IT? ******

For those of you who haven't been around or aren't aware, every evening prior to the start of the gameweek FFS releases their picks of players for the gameweek, "Scout Picks", as well as 3 differentials before the first games to separate yourself from the crowd.

This is your way to have a bit of fun and challenge those scout picks with a set of your own (read instructions below). This will always open the day before the gameweek starts around 8pm, and whilst you don't have to play weekly, the more you play the better chance you have of winning!

Gameweek winners will also be awarded a spot in the Community Roundup article.

    ****** INSTRUCTIONS ******

Everyone can have their own scout picks (there is no limit on team value) but with one simple rule,

YOU CAN ONLY PICK ONE PLAYER FROM EACH TEAM
(yes, two of your players at least will be on opposing teams).

You can only have ONE submission, and your FIRST submission will be what is accepted. You also must respond DIRECTLY to this post (not to a reply on this post). FFS Scout Picks are automatically enrolled. Teams must comply with FPL formation rules and be submitted in an easy to read format, e.g.

    GK
    DEF DEF DEF
    MID MID MID MID
    FOR FOR FOR

Deadline for this gameweek is Friday 8th December 11.30am.

    ****** SCORING ******

Regardless of number of applicants, scoring will be done by the following:

    1st place: 3 points
Top 4% of the population will rank "second" and score 2 points.
Top 10% of the population will rank "third" and score 1 point.

Stick. KDB too hot to swap if you have him, imo. Both your alternatives are "maybes" at the moment for various reasons.

    Start 1 of the following

    A) Moreno (90 or 0?)
    B) Choupo
    C) Mbemba

    Cheers

Theirs a good chance that you'll get Choupo's points no matter what you pick here as Mbemba's far from nailed and Moreno's injured, B.

Injury rumours, dodgy weather forecast, derby games.

Reckon going to shake things up a bit.

As an owner, I fear you might be right. Not certain enough to take a hit though.
