Scout Notes – Lingard Rise Continues

Jesse Lingard maintained his rich vein of form as a strong Manchester United labour to a 2-0 victory over Derby, while Liverpool’s win over Everton is clouded in controversy.

Both Jose Mourinho and his Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp fielded close to first-choice teams last night, suggesting the duo see the FA Cup as their best hope of silverware this season.

The United boss made five changes to the side that beat Everton on New Year’s Day, resting key defender Phil Jones and handing Henrikh Mkhitaryan a start in place of Nemanja Matic against Championship form team Derby County.

The Armenian was part of a star-studded midfield that, perhaps surprisingly, also included Paul Pogba and the in-form Jesse Lingard, who has scored four goals across the last five Gameweeks.

His excellent recent showings have seen him soar to the top of Gameweek 23’s transfers-in table, with more than 210,000 managers buying Lingard ahead of a visit from struggling Stoke City two Mondays from now. A further price rise to 6.3 prior to the Potters meeting appears imminent.

The 14.0%-owned midfielder responded with yet another goal, firing home from an assist by substitute Romelu Lukaku with just six minutes of the tie remaining.

The Belgian striker, back in action a week after being stretchered off with a head injury, then sealed the deal on 90 minutes when another sub, Anthony Martial, played him in on the counter-attack.

United had 28 shots against the Rams, ten of which were on target, and Marcus Rashford twice hit the post in a profilgate display.

But the key fact to emerge from the night was just how seriously Mourinho took the tie.

There might have been an element of ego to that – United, after all, were dumped out of the EFL Cup by Bristol City before Christmas – but with the league Man City’s to lose and the Champions League no more than a remote chance of glory, the FA Cup may now be a priority.

Should both United and Liverpool continue to value a good cup run, rotation will be a major factor as things develop, albeit a lot further down the line.

The fourth and fifth rounds – in late January and mid-February – dovetail with the Premier League schedule.

The competition reaches the quarter and semi-final stages during Gameweeks 31 (mid-March) and 35 (late April) respectively, and those ties will cause postponements and possible double Gameweeks.

By then, of course, both sides might have gone a lot deeper in the Champions League as well.

These considerations are not a concern just yet, but it might be worth filing away the impact the FA Cup could still have on our squads as things develop later in the season.

Firmino incident clouds Liverpool win

Virgil Van Dijk capped his Liverpool debut with the winning goal in the Merseyside derby, but his moment of glory was overshadowed by a potential FA investigation involving team-mate Firmino.

Liverpool’s record signing headed home a late corner to seal the Reds’ 2-1 FA Cup third round win over Everton.

It was a dramatic end to a match that, for a local derby, was a relatively tepid affair until Mason Holgate pushed Firmino into the Anfield crowd, sparking a heated exchange between the pair.

Post-match, there were reports that the FA will investigate what was said, with the press stating that there have been allegations that Firmino racially abused the Everton defender during their exchange.

The matter is, obviously, in its infancy and could boil down to little more than a misunderstood comment in a string of Portuguese expletives.

But should any charge be made, the Liverpool striker could be looking at a significant suspension – Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey missed five matches for racially abusing a Wolves player in December 2016, for instance.

Owned by 37.2% of FPL managers, Firmino’s stock in FPL is currently simmering. While he has suffered 72,000+ sales ahead of the Gameweek 23 clash with Manchester City, some 86,000 acquisitions have made him the current top target in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

In contrast, team-mates Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho are suffering heavy losses. The pair are the two most sold assets ahead of the City clash with 189,000+ and 102,000+ sales respectively.

Salah was at Anfield to watch last night’s cup tie, whereas Coutinho, long linked with a move to Barcelona, was conspicuous by his absence.

On the pitch, matters were rather clearer.

Both managers fielded strong sides, with Klopp pairing up Van Dijk and Joel Matip in what most agree is likely to be his first choice centre-back partnership.

Fit-again Adam Lallana was given another start, playing 70 minutes and earning the penalty from which James Milner opened the scoring.

Gylfi Sigurdsson then equalised from a fast Everton break which involved the key pass delivered by, of all people, veteran centre-half Phil Jagielka.

The Toffees’ new striker, Cenk Tosun, was signed too late to be eligible for the tie, meaning Dominic Calvert-Lewin again led the line.

But the 12.4%-owned forward looks likely to be given only limited pitch-time from now on, with more than 700,000 FPL managers set to begin a search for an alternative third striker.

Those who believes that it is necessary for the person who was racially abused to be offended for it to be an offense are to be blunt, wrong.

What’s everyone’s opinion on Morata? I know he’s been in poor form lately but at least he’s getting chances. He should/could of had 3 against Arsenal and he had a few chances against Stoke the game before aswel. Fixtures couldn’t be better either.

Who to downgrade to make way for Alonso?

De Gea - expensive, already have Jones, but never have to worry about GK position
Jones - already have De Gea, but is great value and had him at 5.1 so reluctant to sell
Otamendi - can't think of any reason to sell tbh, been one of my best players and had him at 5.9

MID/FWD - use cheaper options, e.g. Firmino over Aguero, Mahrez over KDB

FA CUP Weekends - possible TC DGW opportunities.

I’ve been thinking about this for a bit now. With City having won the league and probably by a wide margin, surely there will be a bit of pressure for the other big teams to win the FA Cup (or other trophy). So basically I expect them to do well and reach the latter stages. So I looked at the PL games they currently face in the FA cup quarter and semi GWs. I don’t know when these games would be rescheduled for but on their own, some would look attractive:

        QTR FINAL 17TH MAR BUR-CHE
        LEI-ARS
        LIV-WAT
        MCI-BRI
        TOT-NEW
        WHM-MNU

        SEMI FINAL 21ST APR ARS-WHU
        BOU-MNU
        BRI-TOT
        CHE-HUD
        MCI-SWA
        WBA-LIV

As it stands, I would definitely be looking to TC Salah in a DGW involving Watford. Or Sterling with a game vs Swansea in a DGW.

He was already a doubt and it was 1 extra fixture (if it was a few extra games more variance) and as you say it was poor team. WHU couldn't even keep a CS V WBA...piling into there players for hits in and hits out was ridiculous.

        De Gea (Adrian)
        Alonso Otamendi Jones Ogbonna (Robertson)
        Salah Sterling Son Lingard (Carroll)
        Kane Aguero (Quaner)

        Thinking of Otamendi+Ogbonna>Stones+Mustafi. Good move?

Not for me. Find a good rotation partner for Ogbonna to replace Robertson IMO given Moreno will be back soon.

I speak fluent Portuguese and Spanish. Puta isn't racist. It literally means whore but is used an intensifier like "fcuking" in English as in "fcking idiot"

According to the Liverpool Echo, the bit I can't make out is "Ce ta louco, ce ta louco, filho de puta" (shortened from Voce ta louco) = You're crazy, you're crazy, motherfcker. I agree with you that he is making it up and he should be banned if he is because when there is a real incident of racism (what happens if he goes to Russia for the World Cup FFS - they throw bananas on the field there!!!) nobody will take him seriously. It also detracts from the validity of any real claim in the future by other players. It is a serious issue.

Just watched it on Youtube. Looks like filho de puta which is something like "motherfcker" (literally son of a whore but it is very strong - maybe even like the C-bomb in intensity). Can't quite make out the first bit.

There's a bit after he says puta where there's a defender's head in the way so can't see what Bobby is saying and then Holgate reacts. It could be at that point Firmino says something racist but the ref is right there so should be able to back up Holgate's lie - I mean story if it happened...

Holate can barely speaking English so I don't know how he will have understood an angry Brazilian shouting at him in Portuguese. Also, the racist word for black people in Brazil isn't negro, it's preto (which oddly, actually is just the word for the colour black) so even if he had said it, he wouldn't understand it as it is not a cognate.

I think the typed quote is completely spot on - to me it matches exactly what Holgate said. But the FA will need evidence of Firmino saying it - that's for certain. Holgate may have misheard, or he may be lying, or he may have heard correctly but there's insufficient proof. Any of those scenarios will mean no punishment for Firmino.

Holgate said to the ref that he had been racially abused by Firmino, ref went over and reported this to the 4th official. Don't think the referee heard anything himself but his noted it in his report for the FA to deal with

Surely they will need to prove that Firmino actually said what Holgate is reporting. Ref couldn't have been any closer so should be able to back Holgate up if it were true. I just don't think it is though...

All Firmino literally said to him was "are you crazy, you son of a wh*re" after he pushed him over the barrier. Nothing else. Holgate is just doing this as a diversion tactic from his absolutely reckless and endangering behaviour in maliciously pushing Firmino over the barriers into the fans. He should be banned as that's just as bad as Young's elbow. Liverpool are also clearly very happy to comply which shows they know nothing was said. It was all in Portuguese anyway so there's no way Holgate would have understood anyway, he's lying out his arse. He deserves whatever ban Firmino would get if he has said something racist for lying, plus his ban for maliciously shoving Firmino into the stands. 5 for racism, 3 for the shoving imo.

Yeah you may be right but i didn't get on them early (further contributing to my horror season) so now i can't afford them and need cheap ways into City/Chelsea/United defence...

Hazard and Gross for Ozil and Richarlison. Jones to Kenny.

                    DDG - Adrian
Stones - Christensen - Van Dijk - Dunk - Kenny
                    Sterling - Hazard - Salah - Lingard - Gross
                    Kane - Firmino - Quaner

                    Rotate Dunk and Kenny.

Thanks Diesel. Why not Jones? I know he can be an injury risk but he should be fairly reliable now that silly season is over?

Chelsea fixtures better than Utd. Plus do you want to double up on Utd defence?

I figure doubling up on United defence is a fair shout considering their love for parking the team bus. To free up cash i could replace DDG with someone. Good goalie pod? Pickford? Fab?

Van Dijk is a lovely differential, could have scored 2 last night and Liverpool do have 9 clean sheets so far this season though not sure about bringing him in directly before Man City haha. I think Aguero funnily enough is a nice differential now Jesus is injured.

Make sure you find room for Salah I'd say because tbh I'm all for differentials but you also want to have the main players who are scoring very regularly because you will fly down the ranks if Salah scores big with him having such a high ownership.

Personally I'd say this is a good base:

                  ____, ____
                  Otamendi/Stones, Alonso/Christensen, Jones, ____, ____
                  Salah, Sterling, Lingard, ____, ____
                  Kane, ____, ____

Then you've got all the main big scorers and high ownership players. Then use the rest of the spaces as differentials to try to work your way up the rankings. Worst thing you can do is have basically none of the high ownership and high scoring players as then you'll go further down the rankings, believe me. All those together are probably like 55-57.5 (depending on who you pick) then use the rest for a few differentials and some cheapies. This is my current squad

                  Pope, Adrian
                  Alonso, Otamendi, Jones, Robertson, Bardsley
                  Salah, Coutinho, Sterling, Lingard, Carroll
                  Kane, Aguero, Quaner

But my team is more designed to compete with my cash league rival and catch him (as now I only have 3 players the same as him). That's my advice but it's completely up to you! Good luck!

Which one would be better long term:
                A) Firmino (if no ban), Mahrez, Mee
                B) Aguero, Albrighton (rotate with Masuaku/TAA), Van Dijk

A would create a more solid 352, but I'm leaning towards B because Aguero could get some big scores with Jesus out, and as a Liverpool fan I kinda want VVD

It's been well documented that the game will be moved forwards to the Saturday if Stoke need a replay. No change to GW fixtures.
