The Digest – Gameweek 26

The Digest draws our coverage of Gameweek 26 to a close as we look to the latest player, team and talking point to catch our attention.

Aaron Ramsey steals the headlines as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang make their Emirates bows in the thrashing of Everton.

Elsewhere, we assess how Swansea’s progress under Carlos Carvalhal can carry them clear of the bottom three and provide us Fantasy managers with some timely bargains.

Meanwhile, we look at how the relentless consistency – and explosive output – of Mohamed Salah changes our view of premium-priced forwards.

The Player

Handed their first starts for Arsenal since arriving in the January transfer window, both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang immediately made their mark in the 5-1 home rout of Everton.

The Armenian international turned on the style, supplying three assists to soar to the top of the transfers-in charts ahead of Gameweek 27.

With Alexandre Lacazette shifted to the bench, Aubameyang’s extra pace and movement were all too evident up front, as the former Borussia Dortmund man opened his account with a finely-taken goal on 37 minutes.

Yet both were left trailing in the wake of Aaron Ramsey, who grabbed the headlines thanks to three goals and a career-high haul of 20 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points against the hapless Toffees.

Back on the teamsheet in the previous Gameweek after a period on the sidelines through injury, the Welshman was quick to replicate the early-season exploits that produced three goals and eight assists in the opening 15 matches.

Thanks to Saturday’s output, Ramsey has now been involved in – scored or assisted – 44% of the Gunners’ goals when on the pitch this season. Mesut Ozil, meanwhile, sits at 27%.

In terms of consistency, Ramsey has produced points in nine of his last 14 starts.

An average of 5.8 points per match (ppm) is ranked fourth among FPL midfielders, with only premium-priced trio Mohamed Salah, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne above him.

The statistics continue to impress when compared with his best ever FPL season in 2013/14. Ramsey is firing shots at a quicker rate (31.3 minutes compared to 35.3), while his efforts in the box (from 1.2 to 1.7) and big chances (from 0.3 to 0.6) also fare better.

Second only to Mkhitaryan for transfers in this week among midfielders, the only real deterrent is Arsenal’s next two fixtures – Arsene Wenger’s side face a north London derby trip to Tottenham before entertaining Man City.

Yet, as evidenced against Everton, Ramsey has the form to reward his early adopters, with a mere 4% of managers currently on board.

A closer look at the schedule shows that, from Gameweek 29 onwards, Arsenal face just one of the top six – away to Man United in Gameweek 36 – in the final 10 rounds of fixtures.

While Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang are bound to be among the key targets, Ramsey – at a cost of just 7.0 – more than merits his place in our plans.

The Team

Following a 5-0 Boxing Day hammering at Anfield in Gameweek 20, Swansea City’s prospects of remaining in the top-flight looked bleak at best.

Yet the arrival of Carlos Carvalhal has transformed the Welsh club’s fortunes and just six league matches later, they’ve already clambered out of the bottom three.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Leicester City extended their unbeaten run to four matches, with a single defeat – against Spurs – the only stain on the new manager’s record.

With back-to-back home wins over Liverpool and Arsenal also under their belt in January, Swansea are now braced for a very promising run that hands them every chance of maintaining their momentum.

Over the next eight Gameweeks, Carvalhal’s men have four favourable matches at the Liberty Stadium (BUR WHU SOT EVE), allied with trips to Brighton, Huddersfield and West Brom.

Investment in their regulars could well pay off.

At the back, Lukasz Fabianski remains the most reliable goalkeeper for saves – the Pole has made 102 stops, at least 17 more than any rival between the posts.

Centre-halves Alfie Mawson and Federico Fernandez have supplied a goal, an assist and a clean sheet apiece over the last three Gameweeks.

At 4.4 to Mawson’s 5.0, Fernandez is the more budget-friendly, yet he’s been anything but prolific. The Argentine’s weekend strike at the King Power was his first goal in the last two seasons, whereas Mawson has netted six league goals since last term.

Although there’s no standout candidates in midfield, Andre Ayew’s (6.8) arrival – his second stint at the club – may yet provide a solution.

Meanwhile, brother Jordan Ayew (5.3) has staked a significant claim as a third striker in our squads.

The second most bought forward this Gameweek ahead of a weekend visit from Burnley, the Ghana international now offers the perfect combination of form and fixtures.

He has scored three times in those six league matches under the new manager and also found the net in last month’s FA Cup win over Wolves.

The Talking Point

With almost every passing Gameweek, Mohamed Salah showcases his talents as a fire and forget captaincy option.

The Egyptian went into Sunday’s head-to-head with Harry Kane at Anfield having produced a goal or assist in 14 of his previous 16 league matches.

Yet for the sixth time in seven Gameweeks, it was Kane who ranked as the number one armband pick, handed the captaincy by 17.3% of FPL managers compared with Salah’s 13.1%.

While Kane fluffed one spot-kick before scoring another, and Sergio Agueroblanked at Burnley, Liverpool’s summer signing passed the test once again, bettering the Spurs man by 15 points to four at Anfield.

Salah’s brace and maximum bonus took him to 204 points in his debut Premier League campaign – with 12 Gameweeks still to go, that’s just 20 points behind Kane’s best ever season and 12 points off Aguero’s career-high haul.

He’s now braced for a schedule that pits Liverpool against just two of the top nine – away to Man United and Chelsea in Gameweeks 30 and 37 respectively – in the remaining 12 rounds of fixtures.

Arguably, we’ve reached the point where Salah’s prolific form and upcoming schedule is undermining Kane and Aguero as captaincy options.

And in turn, it again makes us ponder if the premium priced forward pairing are now struggling to justify their selection.

Granted, Fantasy managers owning just one of that pair will likely be happy to hold, but those with both Kane and Aguero – some 537,000+ – may now be reconsidering their options.

With Salah so ever-reliable as a captain, downgrading one of Kane or Aguero to a mid-price or budget forward, thus freeing up cash to strengthen elsewhere, could become the popular strategy.

Is there any Idea already when to use Free Hit Chip - GW 31 or 35 better?

Too early to know with the amount of games in GW31 unknown.

Good prep and only 3 or 4 games in GW31 may make the FH more beneficial in GW35.

At first glance, gw31 seem to be the ideal use of the chip, but it all depends on the cup results. If a lot of top teams fail for instance, the FH could be even better used to fill your team up with dgw players...

            Ironic post.

I was only sceptical because the question doesn't seem particularly pressing. You are in a great position if that's your biggest worry. It's a good problem to have. I would bench Pogba, Wilson or Shaq, but it's hard to split them.

It's not really a good problem to have, there's no such thing in fpl.

    How about this WC?

    Fabianski -- Foster
    Davies -- Robertson -- Maguire -- Naughton -- Taylor
    Hazard -- Salah -- Son -- Walcott -- Milivojevic
    Kane -- Vardy -- Ayew

No City coverage until GW30. Nuts?

They are the favorite candidates.. what is your point? Ramsey was utilised as a cdm (scored a hattrick though) and Bellerin played as a RB not a RWB.. valid statement imo.. dont take it to literal

Ugh. You said it yourself. Ramsey scored a hattrick. I'm sure he'll assist plenty before the end of the season too. Mark was hardly speaking figuratively.

If it's not literal, then it's a huge exaggeration. Perhaps less than half the assists will come from those two. The problem is that people are listening, and they parrot Mark's words, and myths will be proliferated as usual.

Just trying to be more realistic/rational, which this community really needs imo

Well no need to aim your tiredness at me mate, your qualm is irrelevant. I'm not complaining about people copying his moves, and I'm not blaming him for that either.

I think words are important, and we should use them a bit more carefully. Regardless of whose fault anything is, the effect is the effect. I don't want to spend my time fighting fires in the comment section (because I want to help people) that have been set by hyperbole on the Scoutcast or in FFS articles.I think you underestimate our susceptibility to buzzwords and simplified information. We crave it, and it spreads like wildfire.

I like to be a little more scientific if I can. Sure it's my responsibility to look after myself (viva independencia), I like to hear people who are influential and attempting to problem solve, speak carefully about the assertions they are making, and avoid falsehoods and assumptions wherever they can.

There's just so much BS around. And a lot of it comes from the website being as much about entertainment as it is about being a tool to actually genuinely improve your FPL management skills.

It is not aimed at you. Your again taking it personal.

I think your missing my point. Obviosly some people won't be critical about the stuff they hear or read and always count on the cast to be the voice of reason. None the less, the scoutcast are just stating THEIR opinion. If you have a different one, you can just argue your case.

In which way would you like it to be more scientific? I dont get why they should weigh up every single word or sentence they speak, just because some people are copying them. As it is also stated on the site somewhere, they dont take responsilibity for any loss of money in a ML or whatever. It is a website created for entertainment, nothing more, nothing less. Maybe your just involved to deep. And I do believe it is a great tool for improving your skills as a manager, but as users we should also accept that they also have a life outside of this and therefore should not be hold to account for everything they do or say. People just gotta be more independent and more critical. Make up their own minds instead of acting like "parrots"

"It is not aimed at you. Your again taking it personal." - Because you are moaning about me doing something I'm not doing: "tired of people claiming that Mark has rigged the game in terms of getting TV because people ''parrot'' his moves".

"None the less, the scoutcast are just stating THEIR opinion. If you have a different one, you can just argue your case." - I am and I have.

" I dont get why they should weigh up every single word or sentence they speak" - strange assumption about how I listen to the scoutcast. Sometimes BS just jumps out of you, unless you're used to absorbing it.

"It is a website created for entertainment, nothing more, nothing less. [...] And I do believe it is a great tool for improving your skills as a manager" - So *something* more, nothing less. Haha.

"they dont take responsilibity for any loss of money in a ML or whatever" - wtf so irrelevant. They don't have to take responsibility for our decisions to be responsible for being useful/helpful and not misleading etc etc. Positive things about the site.

I just see room for improvement, that's all. And that's enough for tonight haha. Laters

"People" is plural... So no it is not aimed at you. The sentence was used to explain how I feel in general about people complaining about Mark and the scoutcasts doings.

And no your not just stating an opposite opinion, your complaining about a lot of other things as well, which our discussion is a prove of.

And no I disagree with you. The site being a tool for for managers to improve their game is equivalent to the site having an entertaining purpose. It is not equivalent to them only making perfect and 100 percent correct statements everytime. It is an opinionbased game. And it is THEIR opinion.

If you think they are being so misleading, why dont you make your own website? Nobody is holding you back. Your the complaining kind of type, who is impossible to satisfy.

Laughing at ones point or trying to mock them is a bit taggy (prolly misspelled that word). But I guess we all argue and react towards arguments in different ways. Im out too.

Stop complaining about my complaints. One man's complaint is another man's constructive criticism.

You're starting to get even more personal. This conversation is over.

I could reverse that by saying im trying to give you constructive critism by adressing your complaints.

By the way, the only thing ive written that is remotely personal, is me calling you a complainer and your way of arguing taggy. But fair enough. This is clearly going no where. Good night

Yes, that's the point. You don't like complaints, yet you are complaining about my complaints. You want freedom of speech yet want to stop me criticising anyone. I'm not the one being a hypocrite dude 😉

My 'personal comment' is retaliation. I genuinely felt you were seizing the opportunity to start something. You were also complaining to me about 'people', where 'people' is clearly means me, or else it is irrelevant. That's why I felt the need to explain myself to you.

I dont feel the need to repeat my self. Your clearly missing the point or unwilling to try too understand it, since you so desperately try to twist and turn everything until it is blown out of proportions and taking out of its context. It is what in a debate is called confusing the audience to draw attention away from the matter. It is not a political or philosophical matter, which you have turned it into. The subject of the discussion was primarly the purpose of this site and people complaining about how the scoutcast approach matters. Look where we are now. Its completely ridicilous, and I take my share of the blame for this as well for not dragging my self out of the discussion. Should have just stated my opinion and left it at that.

And no, I was just stating that I was getting tired of people pointing fingers at the cast, and sometimes in a personal matter which was relevant to the subject of the discussion. You chosing to take it personal is your decision solely. This will without a doubt be my last respond to you.

It's more of an assumption based on one game . Ozil been garbage all season. Mkhy also been whack. One good game vs a poor team doesn't say anything . I would proceed with caution myself. Ramsey been good all season. He's the man to get imo

Kind of glad he wasn't mentioned so the sheep let him pass by. Nothing worse than having your sights set on a player for the Scoutcast, podcasts or articles ( of any site) bringing attention to a player you already know you want .

Liverpool don't have the most trustworthy defence, so think if you'd like to keep that Liverpool player spot for one of their attacking players, like Mane.

If you had say 8 players playing GW31 without hits, would you take a -8 or -12 to field a full XI or would it be worthwhile?

If there was a heavy hitter who would play in GW31 and everyone got him, I'd get a hit to bring that one.

Which event likely to happen sooner: a Duffy goal or a Brighton CS? I'm tired of waiting but have to replace my 2 other defenders first.

Given the disarray most teams will be in, you'll be fine with no hits or just a -4 and getting 9 out.

I know id be fine with the extra planning.

Just wondering if people would take a -4 for a player considering it's basically a -2 if you're planning on playing WC for GW32

Depends on how confident you are in the player's likelihood of returning, but, yeah, I expect to take a hit or two if it means I get in Mane or Fimino or Wilson or Sturridge - someone with enough upside to justify the hit.

Yeah, I think it's generally worth the 2 point risk if you're getting rid the following GW anyway

Right, or have a WC to use in GW32, or don't actually mind the upcoming fixtures (e.g., West Brom still has BUR, SWA in GW32 and GW33).

depends on how many games they will end up being do i really want 11 players when there is only 2 games probably not i dont have my free hit so i would be stuck with a right load of cack for the next gw i will just look at getting the premium players from the sides that are playing

Yeah that's fair enough. At the moment I plan on playing WC in GW32 so wouldn't care what my squad looked like before that

With the world cup this summer, if the top 4 premier league positions are decided by gw37 is there a chance the likes of Kane sterling Eriksen kun etc who will be playing, might get rested?
If so, worth holding onto free hit chip?

GW37 may be too late to still have that chip.

so you really think and Argentinian will do denmark and England a favour like that. Don't overthink. Poch or Pep will not give a damn about the world cup. Why would they. Dont overthink

For gw38? Go all in on players with something to play for? Resting is a risk, will be a dgw 37 for some too and some will be mentally on holiday already. Maybe, yeah, maybe

I did Lingard to Deulofeu I think it’s a good punt with potential for a few points.
