Scout Notes – Spurs Held At Rochdale

A last-gasp equaliser earns Rochdale an FA Cup replay at Wembley as Spurs’ fixture list grows ever longer.

Having pulled off a stunning 2-2 draw at Juventus in midweek, Spurs were on the receiving end of the same scoreline in the rather less evocative surroundings of the Crown Oil Arena.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino made 11 changes to the side that came from two goals down against the Italian champions, and League One strugglers Rochdale responded by going into the break a goal to the good.

New signing Lucas Moura, making his first start, equalised and a Harry Kane penalty turned the tie around, with assists coming from Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli, only for Steve Davies to restore parity with just seconds to go.

The strike was just reward for an inspired display by Rochdale, but it puts extra strain on a Spurs squad with a major workload to come over the next fortnight.

And that could have repercussions for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers with Pochettino’s players in their teams.

Five have double-digit ownership figures in FPL, with another two – Jan Vertonghen (9.0%) and Hugo Lloris (8.1%) – not far behind.

Kane (44.2%) and Ben Davies (17.5%) are the most popular, although Gameweek 28’s transfer market is currently delivering mixed messages on the pair, with the former the fifth most sold player and the latter the most purchased.

All will now have to endure a schedule involving five matches in 15 days when they return to action on Sunday with a trip to Crystal Palace in the league.

That match has itself had to be moved from its original Monday night date a week today to early on the Sunday afternoon instead. This, to accommodate the FA Cup replay with Rochdale, which will take place on Wednesday, February 28.

A visit from Huddersfield comes three days later, the conclusion of their Champions League tie with Juventus in the midweek that follows and then a trip to Bournemouth a further three days after that.

It would be a major surprise if Pochettino doesn’t field a very similar side in the replay to the one he put out yesterday, so he’s unlikely to shuffle his pack for the Palace match that precedes it.

But rotation – to a degree – could be on the agenda as he prepares his players for the Juventus clash, marking out the Huddersfield fixture in Gameweek 29 as the obvious place to manage the pitch-time of some key assets.

And any issues of injury or fatigue that arise from the Champions League tie will have an impact on the side for the Bournemouth match that follows.

Pochettino has had to endure the worst of possible worlds across the last two rounds of the FA Cup.

He rang the changes for the trip to Newport County in round four, only to be forced into bringing on his big guns to set up a replay.

The same scenario occurred yesterday, with Kane, Alli and Erik Lamela all introduced in the second half.

Even though his squad is now injury-free, he will be loath to repeat the trick in next week’s replay. Post-match, the Spurs boss was quick to talk up the numerous options at his disposal as the treatment room empties.

“We have all the squad fit and it will be another game to provide players with the chance to compete on Wembley and we have the possibility to reach the quarter finals.”

Davies, Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier are all likely to be swapped in and out in the full-back/wing-back positions, although Aurier will be suspended for the Champions League second leg, which should guarantee him a start in the Huddersfield match.

The 90 minutes played by Toby Alderweireld yesterday also adds competition for places at centre-half, while Moura’s goal scoring performance could impact on the pitch-time of Son Heung-min (11.8%), who has now failed to score for seven straight matches in all competitions.

Factor in a potential no-show in Gameweek 31 should they finally make the FA Cup quarter-finals – the winners of the Swansea City/Sheffield Wednesday replay await in that – and an otherwise attractive league schedule is now a nasty mix of potential rotation hotspots and a blank.

This could dent their allure for those managers who were looking to play their Free Hit Chip in Gameweek 31 and take advantage of Spurs’ short-term schedule over the next three Gameweeks (cry HUD bou).

And with matches against Chelsea and Man City to come in Gameweeks 32 and 34 respectively, owning Spurs’ assets suddenly comes with a number of caveats attached.

    Thoughts on:
    A) Alonso, Sanchez & Vardy --> Daniels, Mané & Kane (-8)
    or
    B) Sanchez & Vardy --> Walcott & Kane (-4)

Feel like Kane might go all Aguero on us soon...

But then I'll have to lose Aubamayang who just got into my squad :/
Might be the sensible thing to do but just seems so boring. Also Vardy with a unsustainable conversion rate of late?

Starting to think the time might have come to disband my Kun-KDB-Sterling trio. Quite reluctant to do it as it has single handedly rescued my rank in recent weeks.

Would selling KDB to someone like Mane be madness?

Bubz - i have the exact same trio and the exact same question going round in my head. I was going to go KDB to Mane but he of course got 3 assists and 14 points last GW.

The three have worked so well that I am personally going to stick at least for Arsenal away. Even though Arsenal are decent at Emirates, they're always culpable to a battering. KDB got 3 bonus points last time out against them, and I don't think you can drop Aguero or Sterling based purely on form.

1 more week to assess the situation in my opinion.

I am going the same as Sidney Will. I don't get the hype personally about going 35 FH, unless you can field 10/11 for 31.

With the 35 FH, it means you might have to not play City, United, Chelsea and Spurs assets. If you WC GW33 and look at the fixtures, you can start low with City and Utd players (say, a maximum of 2 between them), 1 chelsea, 1 spurs, then transfer them all in for 36/37. Yes it means you lose transfers between 35 and 37 but it means you can field a strong 11 for 35 still and strong 11 for 31. Or am I missing something?

Tripps and Davies are both on corners. Davies has freekicks too so perhaps he's worth the extra .4. I think he's less safe than Davies. Rose is marginally less terrible than Aurier.

Spurs have by far the best fixtures of any GW31 blankers and their fullbacks offer so much attacking potential.

Aurier is banned from CL, so he'll have to play PL

Do you know the duration of Aurier’s UCL suspension? Thanks.

I think it's only 1 game - but if you're looking to bring in Trippier, his pitch time could be affected in GW29 and GW30 which fall either side of the CL match on the 7th

My defence could be in trouble this week..

    Otimendi, Jones, Martina, Ogbonna, Mbemba

Thinking I’m doing Otimendi/Jones, Mbemba > VVD, Chilwell -4. Both Liverpool and Leicester got 2 decent weeks of home fixtures

Presuming most people will be getting Firmino and Salah by GW31 (if not already), which pool player will you pick for the 3rd pool slot?

Mane seems the standout candidate for me.
    Perhaps Karius?

VVD or Mane, very difficult to pick between the two.

I suspect the cash may force my hand i.e. Alonso out to VVD to allow funds upfront for Firmino

Karius or VVD. Mane is an awful pick, can't believe so many are going for him. He can score 100 goals in the CL for all I care, it won't convert to points in the PL.

Mane is not an awful pick. Has been in poor form and now looks like he is hitting a purple patch again.

VVD or Mane. Karius is an intriguing option though, with so few attractive keepers around.

I think I'm going to go without Firmino and have VVD, Mane and Salah.

Thoughts on: A) Alonso, Sanchez & Vardy --> Daniels, Mané & Kane (-8)
    or
    B) Sanchez & Vardy --> Walcott & Kane (-4) Feel like Kane might go all Aguero on us soon...

Well going without Kane going forwards seems unpalatable and I don't want to lose Aubamayang quite yet... Could be good holding on a little bit longer of course.

I find the obsession with Daniels on here hilarious, am I missing something?

1 clean sheet in last 14
1 goal and 1 assist all season.

    Too funny

For my own records, here is a plan that I can afford to ditch some GW31 blankers/injuries and get in Walcott & Firmino:

    Alonso > VVD
    Jones > Martina
    Son > Walcott
    J Ayew > Firmino

I have 2FT's so will wait for pressers and only make 1 change if I can get away with it this week, giving me 2FT's next week marginally closer to GW31 for better decisions on form and injuries/rotation.

Need to find an alternative plan to try and get in Mane. I'm 0.6m short of Sterling > Mane without ditching Kane or Aguero.

So now that the GW31 fixtures are all but confirmed (I'm assuming Spurs will win their replay with Rochdale) I have a good idea of what my team will look like that week. If all goes to plan it will be something like this:

    Foster
    Van Dijk, Daniels, Schindler, Bauer
    Salah, Walcott, Shaqiri
    Firmino, Wilson

I'm struggling to see why I would want to WC that team in GW32. Liverpool, Bournemouth, West Brom and Huddersfield all have decent fixtures that week. Bauer and Shaqiri are easily benchable and I can sell Walcott for an Arsenal mid or Mahrez. Will I really want to get rid of one of my City mids (at Everton) for Hazard or Eriksen who play against each other that week? It looks to me like there's a good chance a WC team could actually score less than my current team that week.

The main benefit to playing the WC in GW32 seems to be the extra transfer you can gain from saving in GW33, however, this doesn't apply to me since I've already played my FH chip so I can save in 34 and have 2 FTs in 35. So my question is, while I can see the benefit of wildcarding in 32 if you have all of your chips available, is GW33 not the better week for those of us that have already used Free Hit? We get an extra week's worth of information without having to sacrifice a transfer like those playing FH in GW35 would.

Would love to get some thoughts on this, particularly from others who have already used Free Hit.
