The Digest – Gameweek 31

We check in with Gameweek 31 for the last time now, assessing the latest player, team and talking point to catch our attention.

Mohamed Salah’s relentless quest for Fantasy Premier League points gathers pace as Liverpool’s form has many thinking twice over parting company with their key assets.

Meanwhile, we offer our final word on the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip in light of Saturday’s reduced set of fixtures.

The Player

So much Fantasy faith was pinned on Mohamed Salah and Liverpool’s attack to deliver over Gameweek 31’s four matches.

Yet even the Egyptian managed to surpass our lofty expectations with an extraordinary display against Javi Gracia’s hapless Watford.

A sublime first season at Anfield stepped into the realms of the ridiculous as Salah ran riot against the Hornets, delivering a season-high tally of 29 points thanks to four goals and an assist.

With seven Gameweeks remaining, his tally of 266 points has already surpassed last season’s top scoring player, Alexis Sanchez, who returned 264 points in his final full campaign at Arsenal.

That’s better than Riyad Mahrez’s 240 points on his way to finishing first in Leicester’s title-winning 2015/16 campaign. It also eclipses the career-high tallies of the likes of Eden Hazard (233 points), Harry Kane (224 points) and Sergio Aguero (216 points).

One of only five players to produce more than 6.0 points per match (ppm) this term, Salah’s average of 8.9ppm is well clear of second-placed Aguero (7.0).

Indeed, with just one top-eight opponent remaining (cry eve BOU wba STO che BHA), the only surprise would now be if he fails to add to his 14 sets of double-digits and breach the 300-point mark come the end of the campaign.

The Team

After suffering a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford, Liverpool bounced back emphatically to help FPL managers to a bumper Gameweek.

The 5-0 victory over Watford also saw Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in the points again, while at the back, the Reds delivered a thirteenth clean sheet of the campaign – just two less than the best defences, Man United and City, with fifteen apiece.

At a point when many are now eyeing up Wildcards to profit from the impending double Gameweeks, Salah’s ability to score big – and consistently do so – now surely makes him undroppable, regardless of the Reds’ lack of a double Gameweek.

Although many are keen to show Mane and Firmino the door, Klopp’s side served a timely reminder that getting rid doesn’t come without risk.

Saturday’s romp now means that Liverpool have scored three or more goals on 15 occasions – seven times at home and eight away showcases their consistency.

Firmino, meanwhile, has earned bonus in 11 of the 12 league matches he has scored in. As well as firing a hat-trick past Porto in the Champions League, Mane has hit his most consistency Fantasy form of the season, producing points in each of the last four Gameweeks.

Should Klopp’s men continue to rack up the goals and buck the growing exodus, those without Wildcards could profit if they keep faith in the Reds’ front three for those favourable remaining matches.

The Talking Point

This season’s first set of Gameweek postponements persuaded many – almost half a million managers – to unleash their Free Hit chip for Gameweek 31.

Although just four matches took place, Salah’s huge haul helped Free Hit chip managers average a hefty 95.5 points, gaining just over a 25-point margin on their rivals (70.1).

However, that margin could, and should, have been greater – only 80.6% of them decided to captain Salah.

On Sunday, Ragabolly’s look into the impact of the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip also pointed out that planning for this round of fixtures cost, on average, a further three points for rivals.

Essentially, then, over 444,000 FPL managers chose the Free Hit chip as a means of navigating Gameweek 31’s four matches, with a lofty 94.7% earning a climb in ranking.

While that clearly can be chalked up as an undoubted success, it’s also worth pointing out that, despite just four fixtures taking place, Salah was the only player in the most transferred in XI for Gameweek 31 to claim double-digits.

Six others – James Tomkins, Andrew Robertson, Junior Stanislas, Jordon Ibe, Luka Milivojevic and Cenk Tosun – achieved this but were largely ignored.

Granted, while Stanislas and Tosun both went into the weekend in fine form, the likes of Tomkins, Robertson, Ibe and Milivojevic all chose the perfect time to deliver season-high returns.

While that only serves to highlight the unpredictability of such occasions, it’s worth bearing in mind that Liverpool were the only top-eight team in action in Gameweek 31.

Those retaining Free Hit chips will be hoping that Gameweek 35 is a little easier to pinpoint the key names and big scorers, with the Merseysiders, Man City and Arsenal all set for favourable fixtures in the six-match slate.

I’m definitely going against the grain backing Arnie and Mkhi over Son and Willian. Don’t have a WC though and that’s what I’ve got.

Well, that improves those fixtures a lot. As you said, GW35 is going to be dealt with the free hit anyway.

And the last few fixtures after the blank are dreamy, although Kane may be back for them.

Sometimes one rests players because of the games surrounding (before and after), not because of the immediate game next on the fixture list. Alternatively, with the league wrapped up it would be an opportunity to test some squad players in a match against high-quality opposition. If I were in Pep's position all bets would be off for who I'd play when

    Cech, Ryan
    Alonso, Smalling, Lowton, Dummett, Fernandez
    Son, Salah, Willian, D.Silva, Mahrez

Any comment on my WC team?

    Pope (wba)
Robertson (cry) / Morgan (bha) / Mee (wba)
Mahrez (lei) / Salah (cry) / David Silva (eve) / Son (che) / Mkhitaryan (stk)
    Firmino (cry) / Aubameyang (stk)

    Bench:
Hennessey (liv) / Tosun (mci) / van Aanholt (liv) / Jagiekla (mci)

My team throughout this season has been mostly based on bookies odds which has proven quite successful so far and I intend on using this strategy next season - currently 10,631 overall...

I've decided to wildcard before the bookies have revealed their odds for GW 32. It goes without saying the advantage of playing the WC now rather than leaving it late before the deadline for GW 32 is that i'm free to transfer in and out as many times as I want depending on who get's injured over the international break and to beat the price rises and falls without leaving me in a position where I cannot afford my anticipated transfers by leaving it too late.

I also believe this template for my WC covers the blank fixtures for GW 35 with a solid starting 11, but no substitutes thanks to no Leicester or Spurs fixtures.

Going forwards, what are peoples opinions of WC'ing now rather than later in the season? Do we know the double gameweek fixtures for GW 34 and GW 37? Also, does anyone else have any experience of using bookies odds to form their teams?

Sorry lads if this has been discussed, I haven’t been on the site for ages, but is there a list of DGW fixtures for GW34? I assume these haven’t been confirmed as the clickers not showing a DGW?

Very nice. RLC to King, Dunk to Naughton and Simpson to Morgan.

      Why would you keep RLC

Not keeping acc, bringing him in - think he could explode in any game he plays and he should play now till the end of the season, Roy loves him. Andy King is a good shout actually but can't see anyone in the price range with similar chance of getting points anywhere, even one game is enough in a DGW since he's playing Hudd... Still gonna stick I reckon

Take RLC out as he’s due to drop in price soon.Put him back in after he does. Its what I’m doing.

You think these DGW rumours from the hot topic earlier are legit? RIP my team if they are. Looks impossible without Free Hit.

Yeah, I think the reality is probably somewhere in between (closer to the HT one). Nothing is impossible.

Already activated wildcard. No Free Hit. It would be a huge problem.

At least with the previously assumed way, I could load up on Arsenal, City and Burnley to get 9 or 10 out for GW35

This is what I’m doing anyways.Im also without fh chip.Cant see any real problem for those that have hit wild card button. The fixtures will be announced before next game week and we can tweak team accordingly whilst picking up price rises.

If the DGW's follow the same pattern as last season, the 6 postponed games due to the FA cup quarter finals will move to GW34, and the 4 postponed games in GW 35 will move to GW 37 due to the FA cup semis. So the double fixtures should be stacked over and above the current fixtures as follows:

      GW 34-
      Spurs v Newcastle
      Burnley v Chelsea
      Leicester v Arsenal
      Swansea v Southampton
      West ham v Man utd
      Man city v Brighton

      GW 37-
      Bournemouth v Man utd
      Brighton v Spurs
      Chelsea v Huddersfield
      Leicester v Southampton

        Wasn't that pattern last season.

None-member here, so this has probably been thrashed out in the member's article on him, but I have my doubts about Auba:

    1. Arsenal, let's be frank, have been poor this season.
    2. Although he's cup-tied in Europe it doesn't stop the other 10 men behind him being chopped and changed which could affect the supply to him.
    3. These 'easy' games, are all against teams that are fighting for their lives against relegation.
    4. No double (might be wrong on this one).
    5. He's playing ok, but not exactly 'on fire' at the moment, there is better value in midfield.

I've just got Lukaku as I don't think you can go without him for the double (with no news of Kane being fit yet), but was very reluctant to, not many significant hauls this season and utd are too defensive.

What do you think? Are this weeks 'essentials' Auba and Lukaku poisoned chalices?

He does have a double. If nothing else the money you have tied up with Auba means he can act as a placeholder for Kane.A fairly easy swap without having to tear your team apart.

      Some thoughts on point 2

Regarding 4, they have a game away to Leicester that needs rescheduling.

The money saved on Auba over Lukaku is worth it in my opinion. Though I may change my mind for my WC next GW. If not Auba, then Kane or just go for Vardy and/orFirmino and/or go cheap and amp up your midfield and defence.

Cheers for the replies. Going to hold off WCing until the next GW, too much uncertainty with fixtures, Kane etc at the mo for me.
