Double Gameweek 34 – Analysis and Reaction

After a long wait, we finally received confirmation of Double Gameweek 34 this afternoon.

Planning and preparation now gets underway in earnest as we assess the best ways to tackle the run-in after eight teams were handed a pair of fixtures in Gameweek 34.

Confirmed Double Gameweek 34 schedule
Bournemouth (liv MUN)
Brighton (cry TOT)
Burnley (LEI CHE)
Chelsea (sot bur)
Leicester (bur SOT)
Man United (WBA bou)
Southampton (CHE lei)
Spurs (MCI bha)

This leaves six matches still requiring a new date.

Chelsea vs Huddersfield
Leicester vs Arsenal
Man City vs Brighton
Swansea vs Southampton
Tottenham vs Newcastle
West Ham vs Man United

The Premier League have confirmed that these will be rescheduled by Tuesday April 3 – before Gameweek 33 – though it is now expected that those 12 teams will now face a Double Gameweek 37.

Providing they drop in Gameweek 37, the schedule would be as follows:

Potential Double Gameweek 37 schedule
Arsenal (BUR lei)
Brighton (MUN mci)
Chelsea (LIV HUD)
Huddersfield (mci che)
Leicester (WHU ARS)
Man City (HUD BHA)
Man United (bha whu)
Newcastle (wat tot)
Southampton (eve swa)
Swansea (bou SOT)
Tottenham (wba NEW)
West Ham (lei MUN)

This is the reverse of the previous school of thought, which had many managers making plans based on the assumption that 12 teams would be playing twice in Double Gameweek 34.

The surprise switch in today’s fixtures may now have many managers reassessing their plans for the run-in, particularly those who still have one or more of the Wildcard, Bench Boost and Free Hit chips in hand.

Earlier this week it was revealed that this is thought to be 12% of the top 10,000 managers and an estimated 20% of “active” managers.

Significantly, some 52,000+ have already played their Wildcard since the Gameweek 31 deadline passed, perhaps expecting that the likes of Arsenal and Man City to also be handed a Double Gameweek 34. Indeed, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the most signed ahead of a return to domestic action, claiming over 125,000 new owners so far.

Immediately, you can see that today’s confirmation has made matters far more difficult for those without the Free Hit chip who were targeting the Gunners’ striker for an expected Double Gameweek 34.

Arsenal were previously one of six teams – along with Burnley, Man City, Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham – who were all expected to have a Double Gameweek 34 and also play in Gameweek 35.

Now, however, that applies only to Burnley.

Without the Free Hit, managers will have to balance their building for the Double Gameweek and then use transfer hits to repair the squad ahead of the Gameweek 35 postponements. What’s more, with the likes of Arsenal and Man City treated to favourable fixtures, a Free Hit in Gameweek 35 could prove even more devastating than the success story that was Gameweek 31.

Certainly, for those still holding their Bench Boost chips, Gameweek 34 was the favoured window prior to today’s reveal.

Now, though, with five of the top six sides – Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Spurs – all likely to play twice in Gameweek 37, some will be setting their sights on the latter round instead.

Indeed, City, United and Spurs all face a pair of opponents outside of the top eight and will clearly offer huge points potential.

Much depends on the state of your squad, of course, and the number of chips still at your disposal. Indeed, this afternoon’s news could provide food for thought for those managers who avoided “dead-ending” their squads in Gameweek 31 and have yet to play the Wildcard.

Should they now favour Double Gameweek 37, they could now play the Free Hit Chip in Double Gameweek 34, with the Wildcard in Gameweek 36 and Bench Boost in Gameweek 37.

On the other hand, while the allure of Double Gameweek 37 may be greater on paper, the reality could be that, by then, many of the sides may have little to play for in the league.

Those Bench Boosting in Double Gameweek 37 will be relying on many teams still being motivated and therefore less prone to rotation, yet there’s a chance that the fight for survival and battle for top-four finishes could be done and dusted by then.

Meanwhile, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Spurs could all still be involved in cup competitions come Double Gameweek 37.

In the case of Man City and Arsenal, the Champions League and Europa League semi-final second legs are in the midweek before the start of Double Gameweek 37. Meanwhile, the Europa League final is just three days after Gameweek 38.

Chelsea, Spurs and Man United all still have hopes of clinching the FA Cup, with the final taking place on May 19 – six days after the end of the season.

You only have to look back to Double Gameweek 37, where Antonio Conte named the following XI at home to Watford in the second of Chelsea’s matches, with one eye on the FA Cup final on May 27.

Begovic; Zouma, Ake, Terry; Azpilicueta, Chalobah, Kante, Kenedy; Hazard, Willian; Batshuayi

While those who opt to Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 34 may have fewer big-hitting, explosive options to load up on, their squads could be less likely to suffer from unexpected teamsheets as fringe players get the chance of a run-out in the penultimate Gameweek.

With Harry Kane potentially still in the running along with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Christian Eriksen and Riyad Mahrez, it’s not as if we’ll short of premium, in-form picks for Double Gameweek 34.

Arguably, then, Fantasy managers who are looking to lessen the likelihood of rotation – and avoid a repeat of instances such as Conte’s infamous XI – may look to using an early Wildcard in Gameweek 32 or 33 in order to profit from the security of Double Gameweek 34 instead.

Choosing when to play the Triple Captain chip will also impact in our plans.

Looking at the main contenders in Double Gameweek 34, Kane – if fit – hosts Man City, Mahrez and Hazard have Burnley away, while Lukaku, although in form, has been far from explosive and managed three double-digit returns all season.

On the other hand, Kane’s Double Gameweek 37, away to West Brom and at home to Newcastle, could prove the big factor in deciding when to play our Triple Captain chip and therefore also our Bench Boost.

Granted, we won’t forgot this season’s Double Gameweek 22 in a hurry – the Spurs striker returned just three points against Swansea and West Ham – yet Kane’s exploits in the corresponding round last term will live far longer in the memory.

Five goals and an assist over 180 minutes’ pitch-time against Man United and Leicester in Double Gameweek 37 preceded a hat-trick at Hull in the season finale to clinch the Golden Boot.

Even if he fails to overcome Mohamed Salah as the top scorer in 2017/18, a fully-fit Kane’s security of pitch-time makes him a big favourite for the Double Gameweek 37 Triple Captain chip.

Again, while Man City also have the fixtures – at home to Huddersfield and Brighton – if Pep Guardiola’s men wrap up the league title early and progress past Liverpool into the Champions League semi-finals, rotation looks inevitable.

Indeed, their head-to-head with the Merseysiders could ultimately prove decisive in how we approach the remaining rounds of fixtures.

Defeat to Liverpool would leave City with only league matches left on their agenda and that might not be a bad thing, even if the title is wrapped up by that point.

As discussed on club’s official website earlier in the week, Guardiola’s men have as many as ten Premier League records in their sights.

Incentive enough, surely, to limit the chances of rotation should they fall to defeat and fail to reach the last four in Europe.

I have wildcard, free hit and bench boost chips. I'm thinking of using the wildcard and free hit chips in both double gameweeks. Is there anything wrong with this strategy? I'm not yet sure when to use BB but it won't be GW38.

I've not thought that far ahead. I currently have 8 players playing that week. Salah, Firmino, Robertson, Foster, Otamendi, Sterling, Walcott and Shaqiri.

A little lost...for those with active WC and no FH, does the below sound about right?

    GW32 (WC) - 3 Liverpool, 3 Burnley, combination of decent GW32, GW33 and DGW 34 Players
GW33+GW34 - Save one FT, transfer in a good DGW player (with bad GW32 fixture)
DGW34 - Transfer in 1 more DGW player, ideally 8 DGW players + 3 Liverpool. Triple Captain
BGW35 - Bring two players in with FTs (should take it up to 8 players), take -4/-8/-12 if needed to field more
    GW36 - Save FT
DGW37 - Use 2 FT and take hits as needed. Bench Boost

    Cheers

Two many variables to account for, with the above. Any slight deviation from the plan could affect your decisions going forward.

      Valid strategy, though.

Cheers. So the (very) short-term strategy is to try and scoop up some price-rises and stick with the above? There is no more 'fixture news' to follow before GW32 deadline right?

Like many having the same problem. Good template, similar to GW31 there will be a discussion on the acceptable number of players for GW35. I went in with 6 and was happy with the 20 deficit vs those who used the FH.

I will probably aim for 6 again.

Damnit, I just wrote all this out and then this article was posted!! So i'll post it anyway, but is covered above..

This is more for those without the TC chip left. I would apologise for excluding you, but sod ya, you have an extra chip left that I don’t! (Thanks Harold)

The vast majority with wildcards left are either on it right now or are planning to use it in GW33.

After looking into it a bit more now that GW34 doubles have been announced, there is a completely different train thought for me at the minute. (This is assuming the remaining fixtures will slot in to GW37).

Now, I know some people had to WC as they were left without much choice as their teams were not in great shape after the smaller nature of GW31. But if you can use your free transfers from now until GW35 to get a good side out for that, you can use the FH in GW34 to get a full DGW XI out if you wanted (most would only have 10 plus Salah of course). Then you can WC in GW36 in order to use BB in GW37. To me, this maximises the DGWs with the slimmest chance of injury and no chance of suspensions troubling your squad.

Usually, I am not in favour of using the BB so late in the season as there teams with little to play for, or there will be rotation if any sides are left in European competition – Like Liverpool and United showed in the last couple of seasons. However, this season it would only be potentially Liverpool or City who would rotate for the Champions League. If it is Liverpool they would only have a normal FPL gameweek and this would be away at The Bridge. Arsenal are of course still in the Johnstones Paint Trophy, so they could well be rotating as well (providing they survive any encounters with white powder left in their Moscow changing room). Even then, Aubameyang is free to play in the league.

There should be a greater number of DGW fixtures in GW37 and they look far more profitable on paper too.

This is a valid tactic but only for those without the TC. Having the TC prevents the FH in GW34 or the BB in 37. So I'm out 😉

Damn you and the extra chip! 🙂 The TC chip can be saved for Kane now in GW37, that's what I'd be doing for sure. There were doubts how Spurs DGW fixtures would lie, but having burned mine already, I'm not happy with Harolds GW37. Fearful even.

Yeah, it's got to be Kane for the TC and, ultimately, that decides the BB in 34 for me.

We've seen his end of season devastation - he should be fit for then and, even if he's 5-6 goals behind Salah, Kane won't surrender the Golden Boot.

I could be in the strange situation of not wanting my GW37 DGW captain to not do too well!

As for the BB, yes that would leave you having to use it in GW34, but think the TC in 37 far outweighs that.

The GW34 DGW fixtures are very 'meh', so if i was using WC in GW33 I would very much be looking at more single gameweek players than I would normally on a BB.

Saving the BB till GW37 seems too risky for my blood. So many variables could influence what we're left with.

Also the spread of players is bigger which could actually make things more difficult in terms of hitting the right targets.

I think there's enough choice to get something out of the BB.

Truth be told, I don't think it's the BB that will be key, I think it will be the TC and the FH that will help me most over the run-in.

Oh its risky, but if there is a bigger pool of players as there is more teams involved I think that helps the BB options as it happens. i wouldn't normally use the BB this late, but as I have used the TC already I am going about things slightly differently than in seasons past.

Would be interesting to see the views that Az has on this, as he has used his TC already too.

Given how they have fallen I would swap the BB chip for another TC chip in a heartbeat, but there are no magic wands here! This plan allows me to utilise a good DGW side for GW34 using the FH, as well as a good DGW side in GW37 after the GW36 WC.

As I am not convinced by the DGW fixtures in GW34 - albeit where players are more assured of their starting berths in their respective teams - I am willing to risk the BB in GW37 and roll the dice as I think the rewards are potentially greater. And also, if I was using the WC in GW33 then any rotation could hurt me in GW37 anyway - At least if I use the WC in GW36 then I would be able to make a far better judgement call when assessing the situations of various teams.

Would be interesting to set up a league starting from this week.. Maybe would help gauge the success of the different WC strategies from GW32 onwards?

You can still join Doubles, Blanks & Chips mini-league which started last week.
Your 105 in GW31 would have put you in the top 20 if you were already in.

''Saving the BB till GW37 seems too risky for my blood. So many variables could influence what we're left with.''

Playing a WC in GW32 to cover teams in GW37 seems similarly too risky. So many variables could influence what we're left with.

''Also the spread of players is bigger which could actually make things more difficult in terms of hitting the right targets. ''

It surely makes it easier with more targets to aim for ans a better quality to select from ?

''Truth be told, I don't think it's the BB that will be key, I think it will be the TC and the FH that will help me most over the run-in.''

TC is a binary hit or miss. With or without the FH, most will have the same players in 35. BB may well be key in 37, but not in 34.

''I think there's enough choice to get something out of the BB.''

The choice is now quite poor, can't wait to see your bench boost players 😉

Its all about the players we end up with, the rest is just swings and round-a-bouts 🙂

            That's myopic.

Covering Kane with the captaincy and having 15 cherry picked bench boost players from a huge pool of teams with doubles will be far more potent.

Even Salah can be cashed in and swapped for a double gameweek player in 37.

Such confidence in Kane. At Salah's pace the golden boot will be over by the time Kane is back (likely GW35) and from his past injuries it takes him a few games to get back to his best. The third occurrence of this injury in recent times and one eye on the World Cup could possibly see him act a bit tentative too in the final GWs esp if Spurs are clear of Chelsea.

It's a risk that paid off for me last season.(having had an earlier duff Aguero TC).
WC GW36 was okay, DGW37 174 pts (inc just 16 BB) and GW38 pts.
Different this season (although blown TC again). WCing now to clean up side and to maximize pts before DGWs.

If you still have your FH, its likely that you've not been able to plan properly and bring in the players who's got the best looking fixtures 32-33-35. Most managers surely has 3 pool players in their squad, but how many have got City and arsenal coverage to compete properly with those free-hitting in 35, whilst also covering Mahrez in 32-33?

I'm in the exact same situation as you, and my approach is different. I'm basically surrendering the freedom to select my GW37-players in 36 as opposed to your strategy.

My idea is WC32-FH34-BB37 --> Build core around 3 pool and players with double in 37 and game in 35 --> supplement with further dgweekers.

Makes it possible to get strong squads out on the pitch every single week. and expensive pool players can be sacrificed ahead of 37 to make way for those other premiums youd want to fill you BB37squad 🙂

Thinking about this also. FH can be played in either GW34 or GW35

I don't think this has to be the plan only for those without TC. As much as it's nice to play it in the double gameweek it's probably not the be all and end all of your season, especially with Salah firing so well in single game weeks (not just talking about the 4 goal haul).

The more I think about it the more I like FH34, WC36, BB37.

It obviously depends on each individual team but most already have 3 Liverpool to get you through GW35. A lot of the players we're bringing in on wildcard aren't necessarily must haves for GW32 and 33.

United have Swansea which is great but then Man City which isn't.

Spurs play Chelsea so it's only really 33 of real interest.

Those using the above strategy can just concentrate on bringing in Aubameyang for example for Stoke and Southampton (h) and have him in place for GW35. Shaqiri + Burnley defenders are also good for 35 if left over from 31, although to be fair Stoke's next 2 aren't great.

It means you get THE MOST up to date info in 34 for your wildcard. And then you bench boost with a wildcard only created 1 week before the double. Yes there could be rotation but on the flip side you know exactly who is and isn't fighting for stuff, you know what's happened in Europe, you know if Kane is back fit and firing. You get to assess Man City before the best DGW of the season. Can load up on Arsenal who keep getting touted as having strong ends to seasons.

Right now those of us on wildcard need a plan for Kane. It's not that difficult, for example Lukaku will be my placeholder. If Kane isn't back then he stays, if he is he goes. But still, I think there's legs in the above strategy, even if you have to use your TC in a single GW. If anything I find it quite appealing to take a punt in 38 🙂

The other thing that gets called out about wildcarding now is having the 2 transfers. So you're using them for 1 of 2 things:

      1. Injuries. In which case the FH is probably better because you'll have all that info anyway.

      2. A plan to make the most of GW32+33 in which case the players you want for the DGWs aren't the ones you also want for 32+33

Those transfers have to be used by 34 because you'll FH in 35 and lose them.

TC is probably not worth more than 25 points absolute maximum, I reckon 2 completely new wildcards could be worth more, although the hope is that those we bring in for 34, we'll also want in 37. But I have my worries about Son and Willian already for example.

Too late though....I've hit the button already. Not to say both strategies won't do really well of course 🙂

Nice post. I think this could work for many, but not for me. My GW31 team was only 9 players, including 2 from Huddersfield and 2 from Bournemouth (who have no fixture in GW35), plus Kenny. Therefore I can't get a competitive team out for GW35 using FTs alone. Think I'll go for the fairly standard route of WC33, BB34, FH35.

Andy, you wrote a long reply and it all seems you were for it and then your last paragraph said you've blown it already! Would you still have wildcarded had you known the DGW fixtures in GW34 at the time of pulling the trigger?

And did you Hot Topic this? I wrote it yesterday but it must be a slow news morning for me to get a HT! 🙂

Nope, wasn't HT by me 🙂

Would I still have wildcarded - quite possibly. But then that's because of the way I played GW31. Not sure I can get to a good team for 32, 33 and 35 with the team I left myself with. That in itself could be a mistake.

          Time will tell 🙂

I think the plan can still work Andy if you are WC in 32. You basically load up DGW37 players, who also happen to have nice fixtures in 32, 33, 35.

            FH in 34

Then use BB in 37 (using 3 FTs to sort injury issues between 34-37). If there is too much damage from rotation/injuries you play your TC in 37 and get the right XI out. Otherwise save TC for 38.

I agree with Mark that right use of TC, WC and FH is more important than BB given the bench will be made up of players sub-4.5m price most likely.

    DDG
    Alonso - Morgan - Lowton
    Salah - Son - Willian - Mhki - Mahrez
    Auba - Vardy

    (Ryan - Barnes - Tarkowski - Dunk)

    .1 ITB

Without a Free Hit (and having hit WC button) it is going to really compromise week 35 team to put out good squad for week 34 and bench boost. I looked at squad below which would give 10 double week players for 34 but then looked at my 2* in week 35 !

Coming to conclusion there will have to be a compromise and accept perhaps only 7/8 double week players and load up with Arsenal and Liverpool who have good single weeks in 34 and also play with good fixtures in 35 and use transfers post 34 to get a couple of City players OR play TC in week 34 - either Son (MCY, bha) or more likely Lukaku (WBA, bou) ) and BB in week 37.

    What do others think?

    DDG Ryan
    Lowton Dunk Bailly Chilwell Alonso
    Salah* Son Mahrez Willian Gross
    Vardy Wood* Lukaku

To those people panicking thinking BB37 instead of 34...

    1) planning your bench for GW37 is a lot harder than planning for 34

    2) Benches by nature are usually week. You will have players in the £4 to £5 bracket, so there wont be much of a difference between BB in 34 and BB in 37.

    3) Your only TC option for GW34 is Lukaku, maybe Mahrez/Vardy, meanwhile in 37 you could have Kane or a Man City option.

Conclusion: BB 34 > BB 37 unless you are planning to use your wildcard on GW36.

    1. the snazzy viking

      1) not really just plan ahead

      2) if you get players with DGWs they can get you at least 15 points which is a good return

      3) Hazard and Eriksen say hi

        • 9 Years

        1) "just plan ahead" lol things are a lot more complicated than that. There is a lot more uncertainty like injuries, form etc. when you have to plan that many more games in advance.

        2) im still saying get players with dgw for 34.

        3) Hazard says hi once every 5 weeks and Eriksen is below Son and Kane in terms of points

For those that have just activated the WC for GW32 and have the FH, BB But No TC, when are you looking to use these?

with 37 looking to be a huge DGW, any merit to WC in 36 and BB in 37? that mean TC Vardy, Mahrez or Lukaku in 34 and still free hit in 35

How many points do you lose in GW32/33 and how well are you set up in 34?

I am set up good for 32 and 33 and a couple of FTs maybe 1 hit. also could just Free hit 34 and plan 32,33 and 35 WC 36 BB37. only draw back would be losing my triple cap for 34

    Could anyone help me?
With a few transfers my team can go into 32, 33 and 34 DGW.

It would look like this in DGW 34.

    Courtois/Hennessey
    Robertson/Zanka/Morgan/Davies/Smalling
    Ramsey/Willian/Salah/Mahrez/Ibe
    Vardy/Lukaku/Firmino

I still have the WC, BB and TC left.

I'm gonna surely BB in GW 35 and TC in 37.

But I'm thinking of waiting till GW 36 to Wildcard.

Is it gonna be too late?

Don't put all of your eggs in one basket. Also, United attack looking good and worth investment in imo.

You probably don’t need advice from me if you have such a forest rank. But fwiw:

Chilwell, Robertson, Smalling at risk of rotation. Personally I’d downgrade Gudmundsson to a sgw enabler, (I’m looking at Loftus-Cheek with good fixtures until the end) and upgrade to Bailly. Morgan probably safer than Chill. Not sure about Robbo, probably risk it

I have no free hit left and it can only be described as a major disadvantage at this stage. I have had a quick look and how to negate this for anyone else in the same situation . My plan is as follows.

I will Wild card in gameweek 33 with an aim to field 9 dgw players in gameweek 34 I will also play the triple captain chip in 34 (holding salah and bobby as the non dgw players) .With this wildcard strategy you would need to bench 4 players who will not blank in 35 but who also double in 37 . So Newcastle Swansea man city are prime examples of this. If u hold your transfer in 34 you can then bring in 3 more players in gameweek 35 for a a minus 4 and should easily field 10-11 that week.

Moving on to 37 you should aim to play bench boost that week and go with 12- 13 double gameweek players again holding onto salah and bobby. You should already have players from city Swansea and Newcastle in your team from your wildcard in 33 along with the players from united Chelsea and spurs you benched for their Blank in gameweek 35.

Does this make sense to anyone ?

    I hope this make sense.

Who to triple captain in 34 is the issue . I like my tripppe captain to be someone others won’t captain . I’m thinking Vardy or alli

For people with all chips left is this still the best option?
    GW 33 WC
    GW34 BB
    GW35 FH
    GW37 TC
I know less fixtures in 34 but more to play for and I want to TC Kane 37...thoughts?

I have WC, BB, FH and TC.
        Plan was WC 33, BB34, FH35 and TC37.
Now, I dont have idea what is the best plan.
TC in 34 Lukaku and BB 37 would be great, but the rotations is coming..
        Whos blanking GW35?
