Scout Notes – Sterling and Jesus to the Fore

Man City stroll past West Ham 4-1 to promote a pair of compelling alternatives to Harry Kane for the Double Gameweek 37 captaincy.

Any doubts as to the motivation of Pep Guardiola and his title-winning team were brushed aside on Sunday afternoon, both by the players on the pitch and post-match by the coach himself.

City produced a dominant display at the London Stadium, outshooting the Hammers 19-4, before Guardiola outlined just what his all-conquering side have left to play for with three matches remaining, while also appearing to dismiss the idea of heavy rotation to come…

“We wanted to win today so that we can get the record of 96 points at home when we get the trophy in front of our people next week. We have something special in terms of confidence and we needed some targets to set in front of us.

Huddersfield, Brighton, Southampton, they deserve for us to be who we are all season. It wouldn’t be fair to them if we came down here for a holiday.

We have to show who we are, who we’ve been all season, that’s why we scored nine goals in two games.”

That should be music to the ears of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers looking to bring in City assets for their decidedly attractive Double Gameweek 37 (HUD BHA).

And two of their brightest stars – Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus – made convincing cases for it to be them.

Sterling continued his fine form with three assists, which took him to a third successive double-digit haul, and his tenth of the season.

He was the most bought midfielder (130,000+) for Gameweek 36 and now has three goals and seven assists from his last six appearances.

Sterling was also unlucky not have a fourth assist when he was clearly fouled by Aaron Creswell in the penalty area, only for a spot-kick to be denied by the match officials. He was also deprived of an assist when Jesus saw his penalty saved by Lukasz Fabianski in Gameweek 35.

His consistent performances and points output makes him a strong rival to Kane for the Triple Captain chip.

Jesus is another.

The striker was second only to the Spurs option for Gameweek 36 transfers-in (133,000+), and his goal at West Ham means he has scored in each of his last four starts, with two assists thrown in for good measure.

In fact, he has now been directly involved in 30 goals in just 25 starts (19 goals, 11 assists) over his two FPL seasons.

Sterling may just be considered for a rest in one of the Gameweek 37 fixtures, whereas Sergio Aguero’s absence through injury appears to make Jesus an assured a starter as any player can be in Guardiola’s line-up.

One recently rested player, Leroy Sane, is testament to the coach’s rotation policy. The German returned after his benching, following six straight starts, for the Gamweek 35 win over Swansea City.

As a result, the midfielder was bought by just 17,000 heading into this weekend, but today’s strike means he now has two goals and an assist from his last four starts.

City’s other goals came from Fernandinho and a Pablo Zabaleta own goal. Kevin De Bruyne was denied the assist on that one, with his cross taking two diversions, first from goalkeeper Adrian and then Declan Rice, who stuck the ball off Zabaleta for a calamitous pinball-like own goal.

Not so rosy elsewhere

All three of Sterling, Jesus and Sane could well be the go-to options for next week’s double, with the first two currently the most purchased players of Gameweek 37.

And their attraction is perhaps partly down to the doubts surrounding City’s central midfield stars.

De Bruyne’s influence remains unparalleled, but his Fantasy form is tailing off badly – another blank today made it just one goal and an assist in eight matches.

At least he was involved.

David Silva’s run of seven league starts came to an end. He was the third top midfielder for Gameweek 36 transfers-in, only for Guardiola to give him the weekend off.

Problems remain at the back as well.

Last week’s clean sheet against the Swans proved to be a false dawn, as Aaron Cresswell’s fine free-kick, awarded for a foul on Edimilson Fernandes, kept City to just one shutout in five matches.

That made it a barren return for both Nicolas Otamendi (26.2%) and Kyle Walker (13.2%), with the latter’s ownership dented further when their man was subbed off with a muscle issue. Meanwhile, skipper Vincent Kompany missed out altogether through injury.

Guardiola’s willingness to mix and match at the back is not helping City’s defensive solidity, which will surely drive Fantasy managers to invest in attacking assets only for remaining fixtures.

Hammers still not safe

Events yesterday – and this afternoon’s result – keep West Ham fully embroiled in the season’s relegation saga.

They too have a Double Gameweek 37 (lei MUN), and next weekend’s trip to the freefalling Foxes could well be the best chance they have of securing the victory that should confirm their Premier League place for another campaign.

The Hammers’ assets are certainly not attracting great Fantasy interest, however.

Aside from the 7.4%-owned Chicharito, who hasn’t started a match since Gameweek 29 and is presumably to be found in a number of ‘ghost ship’ sides, their most popular player is Marko Arnautovic (6.2%).

But the Austrian blanked for the second time in three Gameweeks – hardly surprising when the Hammers managed just a single shot on target against the champions – which meant that it was left to goalscorer Cresswell to again get in the points.

The defender’s first goal of the season followed up an assist – his seventh of the season – in Gameweek 34.

Cresswell’s dead-ball delivery offers a real attacking threat, which is just as well when he’s operating in a defence that has managed just one clean sheet in eight Gameweeks.

Arnautovic’s continued role as the central striker will surely persuade his owners to hold for the double, while Cresswell (2.2%) and perhaps Manuel Lanzini have some merit as a risky differential, but David Moyes’ side offers precious little else for Fantasy managers to enthuse over.

what to do about about leicesters poor defence?
    A) play morgan he has an ok double
    B) play lowton away to arsenal, morgan is too much of a liability
    C) take a hit to get a swans defender ( i have already taken a -8 to get jesus and kane )
    D) i still have alonso gross and atm will have to start andy king, getting rid of them is more important.

    De Gea
    Bailly Morgan Vert
    Salah Sterling Willian Lingard Arnie

    Playing my FH this week

    Any suggestions?

    Fabianski
    Davies - Alonso - Smalling
    Sterling - Silva - Erikssen - Arnautovic
    Jesus - Kane - Giroud

    Maenpaa - Romeu - Mbemba - Hunnemeier

    Is Davies nailed ?
    Giroud worth the risk?

    1. Sheeno
      • 10 Years

How much does that leave you ITB? I'm playing my FH too, my team's looking like this:

      Ederson
      Vertonghen / Smalling / Naughton
      Alli / Sterling / Pogba / Arnautovic
      Kane / Jesus / Vardy

I was very tempted to forego the City defence for two midfielders like you have. I can definitely see them keeping 2 CSes though, it's a tricky one..

I'd say Davies isn't worth the rotation risk, and would go for Vertonghen if you can find the extra 0.2 m. You could downgrade Alonso for that as I'm not so sure they'll keep a CS against Liverpool, but I do get the appeal of his potential attacking returns.

Giroud is a punt, I think Vardy is a safer option but you never know, Giroud could be a good differential.

0.4m itb so I can do Davies to vertonghen, but was erring more on reward than risk for this dgw.

Alonso, Davies and Giroud are my so called differentials in my ml, I have 35 points to make up on the leader and i'm hoping that a few risks in the dgw and then reverting back to my Liverpool heavy team in 38 is enough

That being said will probably do Davies to vertonghen and then chance my arm on Alonso and Giroud scoring big in the Huddersfield match

    Mourinho on Lukaku post game:

"I don't think it's something, or I hope it's not, that in this moment keeps him immediately out of a game that is in three weeks' time.

Can someone please decipher ? Is he saying that it looks as though he's out until the FA Cup final in three weeks time or is he hoping that he won't be out for it!

I guess all will be revealed when his injury is properly assessed?

Mourinho will surely spare him if he's in doubt of missing the FA Cup final leaving us with an easy decision to replace him with Jesus which also frees up funds.

Iv Alli /Lloris and Kane (c) so need a haul 2more nite.

He has WC and BB. Cant figure out why he didnt play wc this wk and BB nxt? Maybe he doesnt realise ya can only use one chip at a time?? He left Son + Eriksen on the bench so Son comes on for Mee only.

I checked RIP.COM and hes not dead either. He was 80 pts ahead 3 gws ago. Maybe he's just scared and has given up??

Is it worth -4 hits to get Mawson for his DGW (bou & SOT) ?

Mariappa (NEW) or Long / Lowton (ars) will play if I don't get him.

Not so sure about Swansea CS when I think it will be the last home game of Bournemouth and Southampton still fighting.

Thank you. I actually have 3 options for now which it requires -4 hit for (a) and (b)

        (a) Eriksen + Mawson
        (b) Alli + Monreal
        (c) Eriksen or Alli + Mariappa + 4 points

Lots of talk about bringing Van Der Hoorn in for the double... Will he even play both? Seems to be in and out of that lineup

Just popped this in the hot topic thread, but here for anyone who wants to read some shite from my mouth. Just read the last paragraph and tell me if you like the idea of my fantasy game

Following on from today's hot topic...I did a lot better at FPL before this site got big. Was easy to spot that gareth bale or leighton baines at lb who suddenly were amazing options. I study all the stats myself anyway by watching and reading a lot.

What has changed too is the strength of the league. between 2006-13 there was more big guns and more whipping boys; I'd regularly take -8's and get results greater than if I hadn't. It's very difficult to get regular risks to pay off now. There were more big guns, more clean sheets, more predictability and more reward for being daring.

The price rise changes had a big impact too. Sometimes you'd take a hit to get someone who you knew had every chance of a 0.8/0.9 rise over three weeks. I used to have team values over 110m almost every season, because I was bold, made early moves, benefited with team value even if the risks didn't always pay off.

My playstyle has been entirely compromised in recent seasons, partially down to these factors. It's a lot more boring now, I don't have the patience + i'm too glass half full about the whole thing.

What I propose is a 2nd fantasy game, exactly the same rules, captains, budget, 3 player team limitations...but no price rises and a free hit every week. That's where the skill would come in, picking a different team every week, the one YOU think is best. we couldn't all pick the scout picks every week could we? Well...i'm sure some could...

I definitely would like FPL introducing a FH weekly Version.... To go alongside the draft as well.

Thanks! yep, I think this would go along nicely with the other two, it would help take away that desire to rearrange your team for hits too by having an outlet to show you had some good ideas, but didn't want the points hit to go along with it.

I used to have 3 teams so I could take lots of hits in the other 2...it helped!

I love football, i play to enhance my enjoyment of it. Back in 2001 the yahoo game was exactly these rules, except it was only 2 per team. I moved from that game to this one in 2006. I've been playing fantasy football 18 years lol.

Good idea, can't argue with his amazing consistency recently. They only capitulated against Palace because of a sending off and even before then he almost got a goal except for an impressive goal line clearance

The replacement has to score 1 goal just to match Vardy.

If Vardy score 1 goal, the replacement has to score 2 goals just to match.

WHU & ARS ... It was last year when these two kept CS on away game. Keep Vardy, imo.

BB activated for the upcoming GW
    Loris McCarthy
Smalling Kompany Van Der Hoorn Chilwell Dummett
    Sterling(vc) Salah Zaha Eriksen Kenedy
    Jesus Kane(c) Perez
    1 FT | 0.1m cash

Should I keep Zaha or > Arnie? (Zaha/Salah the only SGW players)?
Rolled the dice with Kompany getting the go-ahead to see out the rest of the season for City. Keep or look for another option?

            good knowledge guys.

You could do with a Rose or Aurier inj or vice versa!

I risked Laporte, same as Kompany is a risk, Bavies is a risk...Monreal...Rudiger...

            Keep Zaha.

if you had the funds i'd say Valencia.

            Vert for Kompany solid.

            Would be tempted to Perez>Ayew.

I'd keep Zaha personally, form and GW38 fixture too good to miss.

No idea about Kompany being nailed for rest of the season, Kompany to Vertonghen is definitely a safer option.

Another option could be Perez to J Ayew - much better for all three upcoming fixtures. I wouldn't want to play Kenedy or Perez for GW38.

What's up with all the Vardy hate? Mahrez is on a bad run of form granted, but Vardy has only blanked twice and was very close to scoring against Palace.
