World Cup Fantasy quarter-final plans scuppered by Spain exit

World Cup Fantasy managers may be short on options for the quarter-finals after Spain were eliminated by Russia.

Several Spanish assets were highly backed for this fixture but have now crashed out of the competition.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from Sunday’s first knockout match.

SPAIN 1-1 RUSSIA (3-4 on penalties)

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Artem Dzyuba (£8.0m) – 6 points

Russia’s famous penalty shoot-out win over Spain was largely a wasteland for Fantasy points. Only striker Artem Dzyuba (£8.0m) picked up any meaningful points returns in the fixture.

Meanwhile, the elimination of Spanish assets may have caused problems for Fantasy managers who either doubled, tripled or quadrupled-up on their coverage.

Sergio Ramos (£6.5m), owned by over 20% of managers, was incredibly close to finding the back of the net from a cross in the 14th minute. However, the intervention of Sergei Ignashevich (£4.5m) meant it went down as the Russian’s own-goal.

Spain dominated the possession but struggled to be direct enough to capitalise. That allowed Russia to get back into the match in the 41st minute when they were awarded a penalty. Gerard Pique (£6.0m) was the player penalised after the ball struck him on the arm following a corner. Dzyuba took the spot kick and scored it.

Both the second-half and the entirety of extra-time were dull and offered very little in the way of chances or entertainment.

Igor Akinfeev (£5.0m) was the hero in the shoot-out as he saved Koke (£6.0m) and Iago Aspas’ (£8.5m) penalties to win the tie.

Among the assets now redundant to a large portion of Fantasy managers are Diego Costa (owned by 26.7%), Isco (34.1%), Ramos (21.3%) and David De Gea (15.4%).

SPAIN XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Nacho (Carvajal 70’), Piqué, Ramos, Alba; Busquets, Koke; Asensio (Rodrigo 104’), Isco, Silva (Iniesta 67’); Diego Costa (Aspas 80’)

RUSSIA XI (4-1-4-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Kudryashov, Kutepov, Ignasevich, Zhirkov (Granat 45’); Samedov (Cheryshev 61’), Kuzyaev (Erokin 97’), Golovin, Zobnin; Dzyuba (Smolov 65’)

Probably Hazard because Kaku not sure at 100%.
Neymar risk a Yellow and maybe more against Mexicans.
De Bruyne isn't a leader (for the moment) and he plays for others
Cout the feeling and Latinos vs Latinos maybe !
Jesus not convince me for the moment

I forgot Mertens but maybe the same role as De Bruyne

So HAZARD ! Penalty, velocity, technical skills and MORE !

Japan will look to defend defend defend. Mexico will look to take the game to Brazil, and every other team they’ve faced so far hence why they have the worst defensive stats. Neymar has the best attacking stats so Neymar (c) innit.

🙁 in fairness in the above case i’d Go Kaku. But neymar’s stats are so insane and mexico’s Are so poor that it’d be silly not to cap for those who have him this week. Kaku will beast through the Japanese defenders probs but not as confident.

Can they defend defend defend though? Even an out of sorts Poland scored vs. Japan in what was, for all intents and purposes, an elimination game.

Feel like Belgium will struggle to break down a low block that Japan will look to set up. From seeing them in the past this is what they struggle most with whereas Brazil will thrive vs an attacking Mexico without Moreno.

What about Brazil though :O 5-0 I can see they are something else. I’m not saying belgian’s are bad but just the slightly better option is Neymar only imo

Definitely. All the evidence points to the highest attacking points being scored against 'better' teams this WC and yet we always back the attacking players playing weaker teams and then we're surprised when they come up against a parked bus.

With 3FT, we need a minimum of 8 players through to field an 11 for the quarters. Will anyone be taking any hits if they have 8 or more progressing? - seems wasteful even if a full bench is beneficial.

Ive currently got 4/6 thru (2x France/Croatia/Spain) and one of Quintero/Kane will progress (providing no injuries or suspensions...) so I'm hopeful of making it over the minimum threshold - However, I need either Brazil(3 players) to make it through or both of Sweden(2) and Belgium(1) to progress 😮

To be honest I think England should make the final now really , between them or Croatia . I'm sure most will be dussapointed if they don't make it now. They will never have a better chance will they?

I think it will be a Brazil vs England/Croatia final.

I am not that impressed with France. I think Argies made them look good.

Problem is though you don't get anything for finishing in a qtr final. I know if I was supporting England now my expectation would be the final looking at the teams to face. A chance like this may never come again in our generation so it's a great opportunity. Even Brazil are not scaring the life out of teams. It's been a strange one. May be other nations are starting to catch up...or maybe it's down to teams full of previous star names reaching the end of their careers ( Argies, Spain, Germany )

I think that the indulgence of players that are past it because of past glories has a lot to do with Spain and Germany failing this time. Having the team run by the players' egos is the problem with Argentina.

Just browsed through the article TM but will data for qualifying to the next Euros and Copa be available as it unravels?

Would be an awsome tool for all betting men and a plus for all fpl players trying to find that diff just about to hit form?

Hello will there be a price shift again at the end of this round? Also is anyone considering the tactic of transferring in fodder (e.g. a 3.9 defender from Japan) now, before they (likely) get knocked out?

Every single player left has never won it. Actually none of the players left in the competition have ever played in a World Cup Final.

Captains for the next 2 days:

    A) Lukaku & Kane (risk both attackers not scoring)

    Or

    B) Munier & Kane (Stick with Munier cap as Belgium will probably keep a CS and not risk it with Kane)

    Thoughts on:

    Dr Bruyne
    Mertens
    Alli

    ?
Chasing a lead so need to take some risks but all could do well
    Hoping Lukaku blank's

    1. AndyCook
        5 years, 10 months ago

De Bruyne plays too deep to have a good chance of big points, in fact he is much more likely to get nothing than something. Only worth considering at all as the pool of mids is shrinking fast. Mertens is a nice option but I think he gets overshadowed by Lukaku and Hazard especially as his price isn’t much lower than theirs and Alli could do very well and is probably a nice option now with the pool of attacking players that are cast as mids rapidly shrinking but Lingard has been doing well enough to keep his spot and is cheaper so I think Alli will be a peripheral figure for now much as he was at Spurs in FPL when Son was performing.

      • AndyCook
          5 years, 10 months ago

Midfield is the area to punt for me as so few good options. Alli my favourite of those differentials. Lots of strikers will outdo Mertens especially given their run in and De Bruyne price dictated by who he is not what he does.

        b. Kane

        Thanks lads

        1. AndyCook
            5 years, 10 months ago

Coutinho plays Monday and Kane on Tuesday so try Coutinho and if it fails move it to Kane. In a scenario where it was only one I would pick Kane but if you’re playing the official game swap it around as needed.
