Pre-Season

The Best Goalkeepers to Buy in FPL 2018/19

Now that the dust has settled following the launch of the Fantasy Premier League 2018/19 game, we can start to look at each position in a bit more detail. We’ll begin, as we often do, with goalkeepers.

David De Gea has been announced as the most expensive shot-stopper at £6.0m, which may deter some from investing in the Manchester United number one.

Meanwhile, Lukasz Fabianski looks set for high ownership given that he has held onto his £4.5m price tag.

Who are the best premium goalkeepers?

Ederson (£5.5m) looks to be the most viable premium goalkeeper option for the start of 2018/19. Not only do Manchester City have the best fixtures in the opening seven Gameweeks (playing all six of the most recently promoted clubs), their goalkeeper also benefits from being priced cheaper than some of his defensive colleagues: Nicolas Otamendi and Kyle Walker are both £6.5m, while Benjamin Mendy is £6.0m. John Stones, Vincent Kompany, Danilo, America Laporte and Fabian Delph – none of whom looked particularly “nailed” – are all £5.5m too.

Whilst goal and assist potential strengthens the case of Otamendi and co, rotation under Pep Guardiola could make Ederson the only member of the City backline who is assured of a start. After the Gameweek 1 fixture against Arsenal (a match City won 3-0 last season), City face Huddersfield (h), Wolves (a), Newcastle (h), Fulham (h), Cardiff (a) and Brighton (h) in their next six fixtures.

Thibaut Courtois (£5.5m) is another premium asset to consider, with Chelsea currently sat second for defence in our season ticker. In the first six Gameweeks the Blues have away fixtures at Huddersfield and Newcastle, as well as home matches against Bournemouth and Cardiff. Only De Gea and Ederson collected more clean sheets than Courtois last season and, like his Man City counterpart, the Belgian shot-stopper offers a slightly cheaper route than his defensive team-mates to potential shut-outs.

Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta have been handed £6.5m price tags, with Victor Moses and Antonio Rudiger marked up at £6.0m. Gary Cahill, David Luis, Andreas Christensen, Davide Zappacosta and Emerson all match Courtois’ price but, at this stage, are much less guaranteed a start.

Hugo Lloris completes the trio of £5.5m goalkeepers and has a strong case for inclusion in our squads too, considering that only one of his defensive colleagues will start the 2018/19 season at a cheaper price. All but Kyle Walker-Peters have come in at £6.0m, making Lloris the cheaper alternative for anyone looking at matches with Newcastle, Fulham, Watford and Brighton in the first six Gameweeks. Spurs do face Manchester United and Liverpool in that period, though.

Meanwhile, last season’s Golden Glove winner David De Gea has come in as the most expensive goalkeeper at £6.0m. As mentioned, his hike up from £5.5m is expected to cause some damage to his ownership figures. The United man kept more clean sheets than anyone else in 2017/18, but there are now more cost-effective options at Old Trafford.

Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Diogo Dalot are all priced at £5.5m, while the reclassified Ashley Young, who has been handed the same price as De Gea but offers the prospect of attacking returns, could prove to be a savvy investment. What we can be assured of with De Gea and no other United defender, however, is guaranteed starts.

Elsewhere in United’s squad, Antonio Valencia is £6.5m and Chris Smalling starts at £6.0m.

Who are the best mid-price goalkeepers?

Whichever of Nick Pope or Tom Heaton gets a starting berth at Burnley is worth considering this season. Both goalkeepers start at £5.0m after the Clarets kept 12 clean sheets in 2017/18. Pope had an impressive campaign, finishing as the fourth-highest scoring goalkeeper despite not making an appearance until Gameweek 4. The extra money might be worth paying given that Burnley shot-stoppers often do well for save and bonus points, while just three teams (Man City, Chelsea and Crystal Palace) rank higher for defence on our season ticker in the first six Gameweeks.

England’s World Cup penalty shootout hero, Jordan Pickford, remains at £5.0m and also has kind fixtures in the opening six weeks. Arsenal are the only side from last season’s top six who he will face in that period, a run of matches that includes home fixtures against Southampton, Huddersfield and West Ham and trips to Wolves and Bournemouth. However, with Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams both priced up at £4.5m, the veteran centre-backs may provide more cost-effective cover.

Pre-season should give us an indication as to which Arsenal goalkeeper – Petr Cech or Bernd Leno (both £5.0m) – will start the season as Unai Emery’s first choice. Leno has a reputation for saving spot-kicks: the German goalkeeper has stopped nine of the 39 penalties he has faced in the Bundesliga.

Fantasy managers should avoid Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka (£5.0m), as the Magpies currently sit bottom of our season ticker for defence. In their first six matches, the Magpies host Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal and travel to Manchester City, Cardiff and Crystal Palace. Only three goalkeepers (Loris Karius, Ederson and Lloris) kept more clean sheets than Dubravka after his debut in Gameweek 27. However, he ranked just 16th for saves made between then and Gameweek 38.

Who are the best budget goalkeepers?

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) has made a swift return to the Premier League after former employers Swansea City were relegated. The Polish shot-stopper, who made more saves than any other goalkeeper last season, joins a side who had the joint-worst defensive record in the division in 2017/18.

West Ham face three of last season’s top six in the opening six Gameweeks, also playing Bournemouth (h), Wolves (h) and Everton (a) in that run of half-dozen matches.

The Hammers’ fixtures rotate perfectly with Southampton this season. A pair-up with Alex McCarthy/Fraser Forster (both £4.5m) should, in theory, give an unbroken run of home matches between now and the end of the season.

It’s hard to justify investment in Mathew Ryan (£4.5m) in the early stages of the season. Brighton face Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham in the first six weeks, with away trips to Watford and Southampton to come in Gameweeks 1 and 5; their only favourable match-up is a home fixture against Fulham in Gameweek 4.

The Seagulls’ home matches dovetail beautifully with Newcastle’s this season, but with Dubravka prohibitively priced at £5.0m, a £4.5m defensive double-up (e.g. Dunk/Lejeune) may be the better route to go when both sides’ fixtures ease off from Gameweek 8.

Our season ticker ranks Crystal Palace’ first nine fixtures as the most favourable from a defensive perspective, so Vicente Guaita/Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) could prove to be an astute purchase.

Bournemouth’s opening fixtures are also particularly attractive, although Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) would surely lose out to a cut-price Charlie Daniels as many FPL bosses’ chosen Cherries pick in defence.

Palace and Bournemouth’s fixtures, coincidentally, intertwine exactly to give an unbroken run of home matches between now and Gameweek 38.

Cardiff and Huddersfield’s mixed starts would seem likely to deter investment in Alex Smithies and Jonas Lossl (both £4.5m), meanwhile.

    First draft, thoughts?

    DDG, 4.0
    TAA, Mendy, Cedric, Tomkins, 4.0
    Salah, Sane, Walcott, Cairney, 4.5
    Zaha, Aguero, Firmino

When TAA is rested, you've got to rely on 2 of Cedric, Tomkins and a 4.0. Not sure I'd be up for that, personally. Downgrade Sane to Silva to upgrade Cedric to Coleman?

whats everyones thoughts on GK's this year then?

Fabianski seems the best 4.5 GK but I'm still not convinced by their defence.
I've looked at the first 14 fixtures & it looks like they rotate well with Southampton, Watford/Wolves, Bournemouth in that order.

Can we trust these defenses or would DDG & a 4.0 be worth the extra 1 million?

I like a cheap rotation, make some money on them both and have a keeper to fall back on if you’re first choice doesn’t turn up. I’m on McCarthy and Fabianski as they both look good value and rotate very nicely like you say.

B for me, Dybala. You can downgrade Bettinelli when Flappy's fixtures improve and there might even be a 4.0 GK at that point, who knows? I expect Coleman to be at least the same value as Robertson from the start, as much as I like Robbo, due to fixtures and Coleman's goal and assist threat (vs assist threat).

Bit of doubt over who the first choice Palace keeper is plus triple Palace might be a bit much. Spurs have a tough start and lot off players arriving back late so I might consider finding room for Salah over Kane.

Lots of bargains at the back even if Mili and Wilf have had price hikes. They ought to make a solid start to the season.
We'll know in pre-season who Roy puts between the sticks, and as both are 4.5m either would be good value.

I would stay away from Kane and Spurs in general.. Spurs have to many important players coming off WC runs while other teams have had loads of rest. Kane, Eriksen, Alli, Trippier, Dier, Vertonghen, Toby, Sanchez, Lloris all coming from the WC. The entire core of their team really. Cant see them having a good start to the season at all.

Staring at Lookman in my team, I'd be wondering why I don't just have a 4.5 or 5.0 instead tbh. Which suggests that Walcott might also be a trap. Have to wait to see how they line up in re-season I guess.

Ok, I've been drafting. Here's a look at my thought process so far - hope it can be helpful for someone!

    Defence:

I put out a post the other day about my thoughts on this here: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/07/07/world-cup-is-over-for-much-owned-brazil-and-uruguay-fantasy-assets/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_18337210
I haven't changed my mind from this yet, and so am still sat on Ederson + 4.0, Van Dijk, Bailly, Azpi, Schelotto, Wan-Bissaka with the intention of playing 3 at the back, but with (hopefully) playing 4.0s to come on if necessary.
Skimping in defence is definitely something I've been weak on in previous years (there's so much value here!), so want to fix it this year, and that defence looks well-balanced, if a tad pricey for some.

    Attack:

My initial thoughts as soon as pricing was released was that Salah was just too expensive, especially with Mane and Firmino both at 9.5. For that reason, all of my first attempts included both Mane and Firmino, and not Salah. However, upon further thought, I realised just how reliable Salah was as a captaincy option, that he was a stretch above the other two last season, his ownership is scary, and when I think about it, I probably wouldn't want Mane in my team if I was choosing players individually - he was a 'coverage' pick. I have hence decided that having Salah + Firmino is optimal because both are superb options on their own, and Salah is worth the extra given he'll be my captain virtually every week.

One of the first things I noticed was the ridiculous value of Arsenal's midfielders: Ramsey @ 7.5 and Mkhi @ 7.0 are steals if they are nailed. I will definitely be keeping an eye on Emery's pre-season; if both are nailed, then I will have both in my team. (I have heard rumours that Emery would like to build his team around Ramsey as a focal point, though contract talks aren't the smoothest.) I had, before pricing was revealed, been sure I would take Aubameyang, but given the value in these two, I may not need him, and with Salah and a pricey defence, that could be important to me as an alternative to Auba. If one of Ramsey or Mkhi doesn't look like playing, then I will follow closely the likes of Martial, Lucas and Lamela with English players still at the world cup.

Obviously, (well, I think it's obvious), having an attacking option from City looks almost essential. Personally I currently have David Silva - from what I've heard, Sane is probably the best choice, with world cup returning players, and being slightly further up the pitch. However, for me the £1.0 has been very useful, and given how important Silva was for them last season, I can't see him missing more than a handful of matches.

That leaves me with two more striker spots + fodder midfielder. At the moment, that fodder is Masuaku, but that is by no means determined - he just seems to be popular.

For the final two striker spots, I've picked Zaha and Tosun. I think Zaha offers incredible value if he continues to get used as a striker at £7.0, and Tosun is a bit more of a gamble (I know less about him) but as Everton's central striker, with probably the best fixtures of anyone, it's a gamble I'm happy to take, especially with plenty of alternative options around the bracket I could switch to (Arnie, Austin, Wood, Wilson for example) if it goes wrong.

This leaves me at this squad for the time being, which, following on from a recent hot topic, I like it because I have picked the players based on their individual potential, but still have strong overall balance across positions and price points, though maybe lacking a 9.5 mid spot for the likes of Eriksen/Mane.

    Ederson, 4.0
Azpi, Van Dijk, Bailly, Schelotto, Wan-Bissaka
    Salah, Dilva, Ramsey, Martial/Mkhi?, Masuaku
    Firmino, Tosun, Zaha

Hope this might have been helpful for some people, and let me know if you have any thoughts!

Understand your point with Tosun. What do you think about him as an option? He's in there but I don't know much about him, just that he is the central striker for Everton who have nice fixtures. Even so, I'm picking him as Everton's central striker, who is very well priced and happens to have very nice fixtures, not because "I want someone who plays in an attacking role for Everton because they have good fixtures." With Silva, I say I should obviously choose a City attacker not simply because they play for City but because they are all good options in themselves (Sane, De Bruyne, Silva, whoever, they'd all be great), though I again understand where you're coming from.
Don't think any of the other attackers were potentially coverage-based, and of course, coverage is allowed at the back.

Thanks for the comment though - looking back, I am still happy with the players as individual choices, so even if I did use coverage as an argument above elsewhere and skimmed over it, I am content with the players I have from a non-coverage viewpoint.

I was thinking about Aubameyang rather than Tosun. It seems that you don't want him becaus you already have 2 Arsenal players, despite wanting him when considering him as an individual. I could have misread though 🙂

I have Tosun at the moment. It's going to be hard to narrow down the team. I also want Zaha, Mitrovic, Wood, Aubameyang, possibly Lacazette and Aguero. Hopefully some decisions will be taken out of my hands by transfers and pre-season 🙂

Ah yeah, I see. You've caught me!
Yes, I was thinking about it that way a bit, so thanks for pointing it out!
Even so, the two midfielders are 'more essential' than he is as things stand at the moment for me, as are Salah and Firmino, and there just isn't room for him without dropping one of those or Silva. If I could fit him/Laca in ahead of Tosun then I certainly would. Value is a big issue though

I enjoyed reading your thinking, which is very sound. Just one thought - won't Mhki be an enabler for Aubyemang to score a lot of goals? I'm looking at an Aubye/Firmino front pairing myself.

Cheers. Potentially, yes. For the time being, because of the new manager, there's quite a lot of uncertainty around the players, so I'm going to have to follow Emery's preseason pretty closely.

I am a little bit worried about going without Aubameyang who started so well last year. That said, I'd argue he is 'fairly priced,' whereas Ramsey and Mkhi are 'very generously priced' and they do more for me for the sake of squad balance. I'm not sure if I'd want to have all 3. I'd love to have, say, Auba over Tosun for example, but that would require some quite drastic alterations elsewhere.

Will just have to wait and see what happens in pre-season, and how essential Auba looks

        Any reason for your suggestions?

I'm sorry, but I'm not convinced at all that Courtois is a better option than Ederson. City had more clean sheets last season than Chelsea, and none of their outfield players are strong options (including Mendy who is still at the world cup despite not playing) because they are all prone to rotation, except maybe Walker.
At Chelsea, you have Azpi and Alonso as alternatives options, both probably nailed (maybe not Alonso if Conte goes, who knows) who have proven they are also very capable of attacking returns.

Regarding Robertson over Van Dijk, I outlined my thoughts in the comment I linked above. Why do you think this?

Again, do you really think Coleman is better option than Bailly? Or is he worth £1.0 more than a base Everton defender? I'm not sold on him. Are we looking through nostalgia specs there?

Regarding Martial over Mkhi, this is impossible to know yet - I will be following preseason to see if either are nailed, and if not, will be looking at alternatives, as outlined above. I think both are great options at incredible prices if nailed.

I'd certainly avoid Martial until Mourinho expresses some faith in him.
There is a case for Coleman over Bailly though. We're not sure of Mourinho's first choice CB pairing, whereas Colman is nailed, plus has a very enticing run of fixtures.
Agree with Ederson over Coutinho - in addition to your case, there's the stable manager factor.

Ederson hardly makes saves so he has little bp potential. I also think City won't have a record breaking season again so his c/s will decrease slightly. I feel Mendy will start the season as he has hardly played at the WC and his attacking was integral to how Pep setup his team at the beginning of the season.

Azpi at 6.5 is kinda expensive even if he will be the most secure defender. Robertson is just so much more likely to get attacking returns over VVD for me.

Martial will start upfront as Rash and Lukaku are at the WC. He can be transfered to Mkhi in gw3

I suppose it isn't certain, but we should know the first team pairing by the start of the season, and I expect, with Jones still in Russia for another week, he won't start GW1 even if he is first choice later on. I will keep an eye out.

He's got two Citizens though. I've actually gone for City t the back - Ederson and Mendy purely for reduced rotation risk. Having Silva and Aguero sat on the bench some GWs will bite you bad!

      Not bad.

Bear in mind Alonso will be in a back four this year probably so is far less appealing.

In which case Ederson + Ashley Young is arguably a better pairing than DDG and Alonso, as well as saving 1m

Use that 1m to either upgrade Williams, or upgrade Deu to Milo CPL?

with Lukaku and Rashford still at the WC and likely to miss the first game , Sanchez will play up front and could be a shrewd alternative captain pick to Salah for the opening game imo

No United players will explode unless Mourinho changes his tune. And if he does, Lukaku is the obvious option.

Honestly just stay away from United altogether until there are certain signs that Mourinho wants to play more attacking this season.

Bit of both. Fabs is a decent shot stopper and WHU had JOE HART for much of the season which didn't help their already poor defence. Fabs will still be great value as he'll get tons of save points.

People spend a lot of time trying to get as many expensive players in as possible by finding cheap gems but I have always seen the game as a game of value. The captains element means you probably need one expensive player with a good fixture each game to captain and another 10 who represent great value. Two form 7.5 millions almost always outscore a 10 million and a 5 million.

I was highly disappointed in my expensive frontline returns last year.

I see even bigger problems at the start of this season.

Kane: august curse, deep world cup
            Lukaku: mourinho
            Morata: burned me last season
            Aguero/jesus: who starts?
Auba: pick of the bunch but dont want him for first two.

This leaves me with firmino and zaha and/or arnie

Or bobby and jiminez and kamara

This allows ample investment in midfield and defence playing 4 5 1 or 3 5 2
I am talking premium gk premium defender (s) and 5 strong midfielders.

Am i on the right track?

If that's how you feel, might I suggest you go with Aguero + 2 of Zaha, Mitrovic, Wood and Firmino, for example.

He just said he likes Auba more tho. I think he should get Auba and tough it out for the first two fixtures (which i think have some high scoring potential anyway)

Aguero was my answer to who starts of him and Jesus. He's not happy with Auba's fixtures, so he can always switch to Auba have a couple of games if he wants. Just trying to tailor my advice to people rather than tell them what I'm doing 🙂

Fair enough 😛 I find it hard sometimes not to just tell people to get the llayers I have in my team

My thinking with ageuro/jesus is stay away until one is injured.

This worked last season as i only had ageuro during Jesus injury and could captain him safely. Got both his december hauls

Or 4-4-2. I don't think 4-5-1 is a good idea. 3-5-2 averaged 67 points per week for me last year but that was once I had the £ to have a stronger 5th mid without sacrificing elsewhere.

If you start off too weak up top, you'll need to wild card to get in the premier strikers who do start well. If you start with a premier one it's easy to use a transfer to switch the the 'right one'.

I know planning an early wildcard is a mistake but i like this as an early strategy.

I usually wildcard early anyway. I know i will want auba and/or kane after august.

I don't think avoiding Auba for the first two games is really a sensible strategy. He is the type of player who can score against anyone.

              1. Suppose he scores better than your replacement in the first two weeks. Then you've lost points, and have to use up a transfer on him.

              2. Suppose he doesn't score better than your replacement in the first two weeks. Are you then really going to be happy selling the player you currently have to get someone in on worse form? This could be an awkward, difficult and easy-to-get-wrong decision.

If you like Auba, get him. If you don't want him, get someone else. Not sold on planning transfers in general when there is so much uncertainty, and this is no exception for me - not a wise waste of a transfer.

Would be hard to make straight swaps probably. I like to keep it flexible. You may need to WC if it doesn't pan out the way you hope.

Is Mendy nailed for City? 6m seems a lot for him if he's not.

My guess is as nailed an any outfield Citizen. He's in my draft.

Hes at the WC but he has only played half a game.

Maybe not but GW1 is nasty anyway and I've got his cover lined up. I intend him to stay in my squad long term until he gets a season-ending injury again.

You could replace Mendy with any City player and their price in that sentence 😛
