Yarmolenko aiming to recapture goal-scoring form at West Ham

West Ham United’s summer spending has continued in the last few days with the capture of Andriy Yarmolenko from Borussia Dortmund for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £17.5m.

The Ukraine international has signed a four-year deal with the Hammers and was Manuel Pellegrini’s fifth recruit after the signings of Ryan Fredericks, Jack Wilshere, Lukasz Fabianski and Issa Diop. Attacking midfielder Felipe Anderson has since signed from Lazio for a club-record fee.

The 28-year-old winger has an eye-catching goal-scoring record in his native country, having scored on 99 occasions in 227 league appearances for Dynamo Kyiv (the fifth-highest goal haul in Ukrainian Premier League history) before his move to the Bundesliga a year ago.

Yarmolenko also registered 65 assists in his time with the Ukrainian giants and has 35 goals in 77 appearances for his national side.

With Marko Arnautovic having been reclassified as a £7.0m forward in Fantasy Premier League ahead of the coming season, Yarmolenko’s listing as a midfielder for the same price is particularly convenient for those Fantasy managers who are unconvinced and unhappy at the maverick Austrian’s positional conversion.

Whereas Arnatouvic has only hit double figures for goals in a season on three occasions, Yarmolenko achieved this feat seven years in a row while at Kyiv.

The 6′ 3″ winger would seem set to play on the flank in Pellegrini’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, though attention will have to be paid to the Hammers’ pre-season friendlies for any tactical tweaks by the Chilean manager.

West Ham’s Director of Football, Mario Husillos, said of the club’s latest capture:

He is a left-footed player but can play on the right and is very quick, very good one-on-one against a defender. He gives the team a lot of attacking options and scores goals, is fast on the counter-attack and provides aerial threat with his height.

The History

Yarmolenko’s club career began with Desna Chernihiv in the same Ukrainian city where he had progressed through the youth system.

It was from Chernihiv that Yarmolenko made the move to Dynamo Kyiv, where he had previously – and briefly – spent time as an academy player.

Featuring initially for the Ukrainian giants’ reserve side, the rangy winger made his first-team debut at the age of 18 towards the end of the 2007/08 season. Yarmolenko marked that cameo substitute appearance against Vorskla Poltava with the winning goal in Kyiv’s 2-1 victory.

Yarmolenko made only three starts and seven substitute appearances in 2008/09, failing to register a goal or assist, but his breakthrough year with Kyiv came the following season.

Still only 19 at the start of the campaign, Yarmolenko made 27 appearances for Kyiv throughout the season (starting all but one of those matches), scoring on seven occasions and providing a further four assists. The youngster also made his first appearances in the UEFA Champions League, with Barcelona and Inter among the Ukrainian side’s group opponents.

From 2010/11 onwards, Yarmolenko hit at least ten goals in each of the next seven seasons. His best single-season goal haul (15) was in his final full campaign with Kyiv, while a total of 14 assists in 2014/15 was his creative peak.

After five league appearances for Kyiv at the start of the 2017/18 season, Yarmolenko signed for Borussia Dortmund for a reported €25m.

The Ukraine international’s first season outside of his home country was something of a disappointment, however, with Yarmolenko failing to recapture the form he had exhibited for several years in his homeland. The winger ended the season with three goals and five assists from 18 Bundesliga appearances – his worst attacking statistics in a decade – although injury did keep him out for two months earlier this calendar year.

Yarmolenko has a wealth of European experience to his name too, having made a combined 86 appearances in the Champions League and Europa League. The wide midfielder has scored on 20 occasions and set up as many goals in his European endeavours.

The Prospects

Yarmolenko’s struggles in Germany temper his consistently excellent returns in Ukraine and the concern for Hammers fans and FPL managers alike is whether the winger will once again flatter to deceive outside of his homeland.

Despite a so-so debut season with Dortmund, Yarmolenko’s underlying creativity statistics still bode well for his prospects this season. The wide-midfielder created a chance every 37 minutes in the Bundesliga in 2017/18, a better rate of key passes than any of his new team-mates in midfield – including Arnautovic.

It should also be noted that Yarmolenko’s impressive assist count for Kyiv doesn’t include many of the “Fantasy assists” that are rewarded in FPL.

Yarmolenko averaged a shot every 33.6 minutes for Dortmund, an only slightly inferior mean than Arnautovic (32.7), who played a large chunk of the season for West Ham as a striker. The Ukrainian winger’s minutes-per-chance rate beat all other Hammers’ midfielders, including Manuel Lanzini.

Yarmolenko started out his career with Kyiv on the left wing but soon became a permanent fixture on the opposite flank as an inverted winger in the Arjen Robben/Riyad Mahrez mould. Nineteen of the Ukrainian wide-midfielder’s 31 attempts on goal for Dortmund last season were from his left boot, underscoring his predilection for cutting inside onto his favoured foot.

With Andy Carroll and Manuel Lanzini out for extended periods and Javier Hernandez having participated in the World Cup this summer, Arnautovic could again be the focal point of the Hammers’ attack at the beginning of 2018/19, though further recruitment in the striking position would seem likely.

Either way, Yarmolenko should be a near-certain starter on his favoured right flank and help alleviate the goal-scoring burden carried by Arnautovic in Carroll and Lanzini’s absence.

Other than appealing home fixtures against Bournemouth and Wolves, West Ham have a difficult-looking start to 2018/19 (the Hammers play five of the “big six” in the first nine Gameweeks) and many of their assets are perhaps best avoided until the fixture schedule eases. That would give us ample time to assess Yarmolenko’s value as a mid-priced midfielder and whether he is worthy of consideration for our Fantasy squads – or indeed, like compatriot Andriy Shevchenko, if his move to the Premier League has come while his powers are on the wane.

Clyne likely to start because TAA returns to training less than a week before the first game, if Clyne does well he will be in possession of the shirt

          Ederson - 4.0

Currently playing a 4-3-3 formation, with Salah, Mahrez and then 5.5/5.0/4.5 for the third spot. Something like Deulofeu/Lookman, Costa and Chalobah.

With so much untested but potential value at 5.0m, is there merit in investing in 3 of those instead and playing them in rotation?

Increases the chances of picking a good one and provides a little more depth on the bench. Can also quickly hop onto a bandwagon and switch if another one becomes apparent.

Maybe a trio of Costa, Kenedy and Will Hughes? Other alternatives could be Ralls, Cairney or Pritchard. Or even Wilshire.

Possibly - but all of those either play in attacking positions or are on set-pieces, or both.

And in the absence of much value at 5.5, I think there is value at 5.0.

(and who would have predicted Capoue would become a bandwagon.....)

I'm going for 2 of the 5m mids, so many options at that price point, Mcarther finished the season well and has started pre season well too and seems to be nailed now.

I think just having one (maybe two) midfield spots for 'that player' and maybe 0.5 behind would suffice? Easy transfer, then - but you won't know for weeks so you could end up with three duds.

    4. QuintonFortune25
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

Definitely. So many great options in that price bracket. However I also see a lot of good options in the 7.5-7 midfield price so want to start off with at least one mid around 7 and two mids at 5.5-4.5. Plus then it's an easy downgrade once we know which of those 5.5-4.5 mids are performing well.

      Always a tricky one this.

I often find myself questioning the point in getting 5.0-6.0 mids when the equivalent defensive options look much better.

As with most seasons, I'm torn but I think I'll inevitably end up with 1 or 2 mids in this bracket.

I think Ralls is the best pick at 5m, and probably Deu at 5.5. Not sure if Costa will be nailed - Cavaleiro seems like he was a lot more effective last season. I like Kenedy, but the fixtures are ridiculous. Hughes is an interesting one, but again not nailed

I have always liked Mahrez and he has served me well.
I just think Pep will take his time with him as he can be a little lazy. (He never rushes players in and wants them to play his way)
not doubting the reasons but I would wait a little first.

agree. However, the reason i may pick him is that there is a decent chance he starts due to the WC players being late back.... and so he could get off to a flyer, with decent fixtures...rotatation a big risk going forward and he'll have to prove himself pretty quick to get a regular start (look at Bernardo Silva - played pretty well, but usually off the bench (high points per minute, but low points per match).

      For me its:
      - Salah cuz big ownership, best player in the game last season, perfect C choice, easier to downgrade than upgrade to get him
      - Firmino cuz great value, plays for attacking team, nailed
      - 11mil attacker (Auba/Kun) I know its not a specific pick but the point is that I want that kind of player to fit in almost any big hitter if someone explodes (seen many teams with no 11mil striker)
      - Ederson. Im almost sure that I'll go premium GK at least till WC as Fabian has poor fix and every year Im not happy with my budget pick as premium ones get tones of points

Also want ManU 5.5 def but wait for the one who will look nailed in preseason.

Ederson- sure fire way into Man city def
      Salah- see last seasons
Ramsey- monitoring for fitness and if he secures an advanced role, I think he could be golden
Coleman- fully fit in Silva's more attacking team. Silvia can be prone to play wing backs hightening his appeal
Robertson- less rotation threat imo than TAA, attacking team with very good clean record at home
Tomkins- 4.5m and scores from set plays. Milli provides first class delivary
Cedric- again, 4.5m, hughes plays wing backs so assist potential
Cairny- 5m mid, on set pieces and pens for attacking fulham

The other spots I am not 100% on but these 8 are nailed (for now)

For newcomers, we're Tom (me) and Nick, two mates from London who last season decided to make an FPL podcast based on our stats driven approach to the game.

For some reason people liked it, so we've come back for more.

We kick off year 2 with an introduction of what to expect from us this year, then preview teams A thru H in terms of their FPL prospects.

Link below with subscription for Spotify, iTunes, Stitcher etc etc

    http://whogottheassist.com/pod-39-a-h-fpl-previews-pod-1-of-2018-19/

    Cheers!

Strikers were generally the worst value players in the game last season.

If you divide ppg by price only two forwards were above 0.6 - Aguero and Aubameyang.
There were 13 mids over 0.6.
    23 defenders over 0.6.
And nearly every keeper was over 0.6 (Best value players in the game)

Yes, but there is a reason you maximize value in other positions to afford the best strikers.

      1. Piggs Boson

Yep, need to spend big on strikers to get all your spots returning pts.

Plenty of budget options elsewhere, but can't skimp up front.

If we get a nailed on 4.5/5.0 striker, I'm definitely on board. Hoping Kamara for Fulham plays regular at 4.5m.

That's the thing people often get confused when talking about value - Strikers are bad value, so you have to spend big to get good returns. This isn't saying pump cash into defence and keepers!

          Good work GB!

Interesting. Does that take into account the minimum price at each position? i.e. 4.0 for a defender, 4.5 for a midfielder etc. Think that gives a more accurate value if you deduct that from the price.

And of course, there are a lot more defenders and midfielders in the game than strikers.

No, it's basically how many pts you can expect per million per game

Thanks for this insight. So what's the approach, two premium and one cheap?

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

If we get a nailed budget option up front (4.5/5.0) then I favour 352.

But i guess this suggests spending big up front. 2 premium at least. I'm sure it could be interpreted differently though.

Your budget 4.5/5 striker is for the bench. You get to bang your head on the wall every week he scores and you get nothing.

What about Jiminez or Kamara? I really hope Niasse plays for Everton, he would be brilliant if playing every week.

            5 years, 9 months ago

I hope it looks like Kamara will get regular minutes, that would be awesome. I'd rather not spend 5.5m for a bench option.

Not sure about Jiminez because apparently Wolves may get another striker and he'll be backup. We'll just have to wait and see how the transfer window and pre-season play out. Thankfully the window ends before the deadline this season!

I'm more than willing to punt on him.

I think he'll start (World Cup absences should help and he is no stranger to the league), and believe that he is a much more complete player than Sterling or Sane. He has a few games to prove his worth to Pep, and am pretty confident that he will.

If not, relatively easy to swap him out after a few weeks - but he could be the "new Salah".

I was going with D Silva as I couldn't afford Sane or Mahrez. But i'm coming round to the idea of Mahrez, looking at his previous scores, he's now going to be in a much better team and as people have said he's got a few weeks to cement a place.

I'm expecting big things from mahrez.

Really not sure, Pep likes his players to be up to speed with his system and be ‘assimilated’.

I am not sure Mahrez will be (or even can be) a Pep type player - pressing, holding a position etc. ... he may get lucky because of the late arrivals from the WC though

    Aguero or Auba?

One is potentially a rotation risk and the other has tough fixtures to start with and possibly a nailed cheaper partner striker (Laca).

Yes, with Salah. I prefer having more (c) options. Besides if Mahrez proof his value(hopefully) then Kun becomes Kane.

They will all be up there at the end of the season I reckon if they stay fit.

I'm on Auba. yes the first two fixtures look tough but he's one of those players that can score versus anyone.

Whilst Kun will undoubtedly get big points over the season, the rotation risk is really frustrating.

      1. Karan14

I'm going with Auba from the start (and Mahrez)

Lessons learned from last season - trust in quality players, try not to overthink things and avoid planned transfers where possible.

In addition, he will have had a full preseason and is (most probably ) 100% nailed.

Is going for 2 midprice up front options a good idea? Easy downgrade if one doesn't perform but is having 2 of the likes of tosun, king and zaha good value?

    1. Piggs Boson
      • 12 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

We'll have to see how they perform in pre-season. Last season no one was good value in that price bracket for strikers. But this season may be different. Tosun certainly has potential to buck the trend.

    Morning all!

Now that the WC is over, the real work starts now - no more knock off fantasy leagues - FPL only!

I will not be including any WHU players at first, I feel they're a team that are buying a lot of individuals but will not work as a team - I think they could actually struggle.

My first draft is the following, please let me know what you think! am I missing anything?

    Ederson (Fabi)
    Cedric / Mee / Tomkins / Robertson / Trippi
Salah / Sane / Lingard (Cairney / Kenedy)

Doubt Masuaku will get many mins this season, Stephens instead perhaps.
