Atsu on penalties, Richarlison impresses and Heaton gets minutes

Fantasy Premier League managers got their first indication of the penalty-taking pecking order at Newcastle in the latest round of pre-season friendlies.

Meanwhile, Tom Heaton got some more minutes under his belt in Nick Pope’s absence, and Richarlison impressed for Watford.

We’ve got all the latest goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from pre-season.

Burnley 0-1 Shrewsbury Town / Burnley 0-2 Blackpool

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Tom Heaton (£5.0m) registered another hour of football for Burnley with Nick Pope (£5.0m) still yet to return following the World Cup. The former Manchester United man was involved in one of two concurrent friendly matches played behind closed doors at the Clarets’ training ground on Tuesday.

First team players were split evenly across the two pitches but neither XI could find a breakthrough against League One opposition.

Daniel Agyei was the most dangerous for Burnley against Shrewsbury but in the end a Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) own-goal was the difference.

On the other pitch, Sam Vokes (£5.5m) and Nakhi Wells (£4.5m) went closest but Joseph Dodoo and Harry Pritchard got the goals for Blackpool.

The only players other than Pope not to be involved in either match were Robbie Brady (£5.5m), Steven Defour (£5.5m), Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m), although the latter is now back in training after returning from World Cup duty with Iceland.

BURNLEY XI v SHREWSBURY: Heaton (Legzdins 60’); Taylor, Long, Tarkowski, Lowton; Koiki (Chakwana 60’), Westwood, O’Neill, Lennon; Agyei, Wood.

BURNLEY XI v BLACKPOOL: Legzdins (Lindegaard 45’); Ward, Mee, Dunne, Bardsley; Walters, Cork, Hendrick, McNeil; Wells (Massanka 45’), Vokes.

ST. PATRICK’S ATHLETIC 0-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Sean Longstaff, Christian Atsu (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Matt Ritchie (£6.0m), Dwight Gayle (£6.0m)

Christian Atsu (£5.5m) appears to have the advantage in the Newcastle United penalty-taking pecking order after the club’s first pre-season match.

The Magpies were 2-0 winners over St. Patrick’s Athletic, with Atsu scoring the second from the spot after Dwight Gayle (£6.0m) was fouled.

As a precautionary measure, Jamaal Lascelles (£5.0m) did not take part in the match due to muscle tightness. Jacob Murphy (£5.0m), Paul Dummett (£4.5m) and Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) were all absent too.

For the first goal, Ayoze Perez (£6.5m) pounced on a loose ball, drove forward and played in Joselu (£5.0m), whose shot was saved. Matt Ritchie (£6.0m) gathered the rebound and his deflected cross fell to central midfielder Sean Longstaff, who struck the back of the net.

Exciting attacking midfielder Kenedy (£5.0m) had two chances in the second-half, hitting the post and forcing a good save out of Saints goalkeeper Barry Murphy, furthering his appeal for the new FPL season.

The result was settled late on when Gayle was fouled in the penalty area after being put through by Atsu. The latter took the spot-kick and dispatched it confidently.

NEWCASTLE UNITED XI (4-2-3-1): Darlow (Sels 45’); Manquillo (Clark 45’), Lejeune (Roberts 45’), Yarney, Fernandez (Yedlin 45’); Diame (Shelvey 45’), Longstaff; Aarons (Kenedy 45’), Pérez (Armstrong 45’), Ritchie (Atsu 45’); Joselu (Gayle 45’).

FC KÖLN 1-1 WATFORD

  • Goals: Andre Gray (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Richarlison (£6.5m)

Andre Gray (£6.0m) and Richarlison (£6.5m) were the brightest players in Watford’s first match of pre-season, which they drew 1-1.

The pair linked up well going forward and both had good chances to score, with the Brazilian stationed on the left-flank but constantly drifting in to support Gray.

It was the two of them who combined for the Hornets’ only goal of the match in the first-half. Will Hughes (£5.0m) won possession and put Richarlison through, who then slid the ball across to Gray to finish at the far post.

Gray had the chance to make it two when, again, Hughes won the ball in midfield and this time released Daryl Janmaat (£5.0m). His cross was close to the former Burnley man, but it was turned behind for a corner.

Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) came on for Ben Foster (£4.5m) at half-time and could have done better for Köln’s equaliser. Salih Oczan’s low cross from the left was easily turned into the empty Watford net by Jhon Córdoba after a poor decision from the Brazilian.

WATFORD FIRST-HALF XI: (4-1-4-1): Foster; Masina, Kabasele, Cathcart, Janmaat; Capoue; Richarlison, Pereyra, Hughes, Sema; Gray.

WATFORD SECOND-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Gomes; Holebas, Britos, Mariappa, Femenia; Hoban, Wilmot; Success, Sinclair, Lukebakio; Deeney.

Which 2 budget mids are better:

Please RMT, I need to improve my mid because it’s too weak:

    Ederson
    Robertson Azpi PVA Cedric

    Auba Firmino Tosun

I’m the same. Ederson is my current keeper.

I just don’t get why people stick a premium keeper against a premium striker/midfielder.

Your defence is weak and the keepers don't rotate well. A City mid over Sanchez any day.

Disagree with the City mid over Sanchez.

Which City mid do you pick from the off that will maintain a place?

This is probably the best time to try Sanchez given his possible OOP start.

Agreed, Sanchez is good as a short term pick at least, by time City have settled post-WC he may even have a decent run of form built up.

It could well be, although conversely it could be the time to avoid because United will be weakened.

Keep an eye on the Community Shield and see who from Silva, Mahrez and Sane is likely to get a run of games.

I want a City midfielder at some stage for sure.

I have Agüero for now and think that’s enough.

Even if all three of those you mentioned play the CS and GW1, KDB and Sterling are then back in the fold... both of whom are first choice. Plus Pep wants Jesus and Agüero together. They have too many options.

KDB will eventually be my go to player.

The defence has been picked to take advantage of the fixtures, will WC after those good fixtures when everything is clearer. Sanchez should be fresh, OOP, and Utd tend to start fast!

Having a cheap defence sounds good in theory, but it rarely works out in practice. You'll want the likes of Robertson/Mendy/Coleman/Bailly pretty quickly.

Robertson was the second name on my team sheet after Salah. He should comfortably get a few assists in the opening fixtures for Liverpool.

I would say Martial is as good a pick as Sanchez if he play (which is likely).

If you did that, you could afford the likes of DDG, Mendy, Robertson in defense

Whatever Arsenal full back that is nailed. Monreal/Bellerin at 5.5 is a steal. Kola at 5.0 if he gets into the first 11 is ridiculous.
Lamela at the start of the season. 6.5 and seems very likely to get a lot of playing time at the start with Son missing.
5.0 attacking players are often good picks to get price rises. Hughes is a good contender if Watford do well, Kenedy likewise with Newcastle.
Ramsey, Mkhi and Lacazette all seem underpriced if Arsenal get going.

Haven't seen much of Sorloth here but if he starts which I think he will could be a decent punt at 5.0
I like yarmolenko, jota and Richarlison type players for fanatasy football, all attacking will play close to the striker and like to shoot

Again a misleading headline. Atsu was dropped last season for Kenedy and, having just got him again it stands to reason he'll be benched. Yes the fact is he could be #1 for pens but that doesn't help Mr.Casual complain in GW that Newcastle got a penalty and Atsu wasn't on the pitch...

There's no sense that he even saw a minute of this game. Why are questions not asked when, less than 4 weeks to kickoff a poorly performing part time team can hold a Premier League team to 2 goals. Ritchie looks like he's going to Stoke and Townsend going back to Newcastle. Sounds like a backward step to me.

Thoughts on this team? At the end of last season many of us had triple Liverpool and triple City, and if their opening run of fixtures would come at another time during the season than the start, i guess many would triple up.
This is just an idea, but how does this 433 with triple-ups look?

    4.5 4.5
    Mendy Robertson Coleman (4.5)
    Salah Mahrez Richarlison (Kenedy) (4.5)
    Firmino Aguero King

Actually left them blank on purpose, we all have our own opinions on 4.5 defenders and midfielders, and i wanted opinions on the "double-triple-up".

When you are picking your starting line-up and you look along your midfield to find either of those as your 3rd mid .... 😉

The value this year is in midfield 🙂

With 4.5 starting goalkeeper, the other one should be rotate-able and nailed, and Button is not.
Too heavy in defense, Bailly not nailed.
Also, better options up to 6.0 than Townsend.
      Morata too uncertain for now

Hey all, I've began tinkering with my team for GW1, wondered what people thought of this provisional team:

    Pickford/Foster
    Alonso/Robertson/PVA/Lovren/Ward
    Salah/Richarlison/Walcott/Cairney/Torreira
    Kane/Zaha/Arnie

    Cheers

Here's a super strong 5 at the back + Salah team for anyone who think you can't achieve balance and value without a 13.0m record-breaking mid in your team.

    Foster
    Coleman - PVA - Douglas - Robertson - Mendy
    Salah (C) - Sanchez (VC)
    Tosun - Aguero - Wood

    Fabianski - Cairney - McArthur - Kenedy

No doubt people will say the midfield is too weak, but that's the advantage of starting with Sanchez. In GW3 Sanchez can be downgraded to anyone, and one of the 5.0m mids can be upgraded to anyone. I can jump to whichever mids I want that add up to 15.5m. (Ramsey/Willian/Mkhi//Siggy etc type combos or even Mahrez & Jota if firing).

Likely to go Aguero > Aubamayang if it looks the right move.

Kenedy's fixtures I know, but I am planning to hold onto my WC for as long as possible, and he's my 3rd bench player until GW9 when his fixtures are incredible and I won't need to waste a FT. I also might want to him in GW2 (Cardiff), 6 or 7.

Good strategy - I'm doing something similar.

I think the value this year lies with premium (attacking) defenders - but also possibly with undervalued 5.0 midfielders. So maximising those players I can get a relatively balanced side with a decent bench each week to cope with inevitable rotation issues.

        4.5, 4.0
        Robertson, Mendy, Coleman, Douglas, Tomkins
        Salah, Mahrez, Costa/Hughes/Kenedy
        Aubameyang, Firmino, Tosun

Absolutely, the value in defence is amazing. You only have to do some points per million & points per match comparisons with attackers to see how valuable they could be.

There are a lot of points to be had in defence, and you can still get 3 x heavy hitters in attack, and have a couple of 'value' picks like Wood, and have a full playing nailed on bench.

But the 3 x 5.0 mids will freak people out I think. It's too different.

The plan is also to rotate the 5.0 mids according to good home fixtures, so I don't really see them as individual players, I see the 3 of them (or later 2 of them) as a package deal where I will try to rotate them in a way that combined they might match someone like Jota over a season, who you wouldn't rotate. Even if they come up a bit short, they're all pretty much nailed on and they will do a job at their price.

Seen Wood's stats? What if I told you Wood's (6.0m) points per match was 4.3 and Firmino's (9.5m) was 4.9

no combination of players (eg 'attack') is 'rubbish' without analysis of the individual players' value. Just because it has two mid-range forwards, doesn't make it rubbish. If Wood and Tosun perform above their price, it's a good forward line, If they don't, it's not.

Kane goal against Newcastle away first game and then a captain hatrick vs. Fulham GW2 to break his August drought?
