Mata and Martial start as Mourinho hints at Gameweek 1 back-four

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has already been incredibly helpful for Fantasy Premier League managers after the Red Devils’ first pre-season match.

Following a 1-1 draw with Club America in Phoenix, Arizona he revealed who would be his back-four for Gameweek 1.

Elsewhere there were friendlies for Liverpool and Wolves.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from another round of pre-season matches.

Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Liverpool

  • Goals: Lazar Markovic, Daniel Sturridge
  • Assists: Sturridge, Naby Keita (£7.5m)

Daniel Sturridge and Naby Keita (£7.5m) were the stand-out performers as Liverpool won 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers.

The English striker, not yet priced up by FPL, added his third goal of pre-season while new signing Keita put up his third assist.

It started slowly for the Reds as James Milner (£5.5m) missed a penalty following Dominic Solanke (£5.0m) being fouled in the area.

Adam Lallana (£7.0m) was the most influential player in the first-half, supplying Solanke with great delivery as well as hitting the crossbar and nearly scoring a lob on the goalkeeper himself.

Substitutes Keita and Sturridge combined twice early in the second-half, with a defence-splitting ball from the former putting the Englishman through only to drag wide before another was sent just over the bar.

The deadlock was broken when Sturridge was the provider, his pass lashed home by Lazar Markovic.

Shortly afterwards Sturridge made it 2-0 after yet another insightful pass from Keita.

LIVERPOOL FIRST-HALF XI (4-4-2): Karius; Moreno, Klavan, Matip, Clyne; Ojo, Lallana, Milner, Woodburn; Solanke, Origi.

LIVERPOOL SECOND-HALF XI (4-3-3): Karius; Robertson, Van Dijk, Phillips, Gomez; Jones, Keita, Fabinho; Markovic, Sturridge, Camacho.

Club America 1-1 Manchester United

  • Goals: Juan Mata (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Ander Herrera (£5.0m)

Juan Mata (£6.5m) rescued a draw for Manchester United in their first pre-season match after Jose Mourinho, as expected, named a largely second string side.

Lee Grant (not yet in FPL) began the match in goal while Anthony Martial (£7.5m) lined up as a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 system.

The Frenchman could have had a penalty in the ninth minute but the referee waved away his appeals. Apart from an effort grazing the crossbar early on, it was a largely disappointing performance for Martial, who was too isolated up front. He was substituted on the hour-mark with a possible knock.

That was when Club America took the lead thanks to a strong Henry Martin header.

Having hit the post in the first-half, Mata scored the equaliser. Substitute Tahith Chong whipped in a lovely ball for Ander Herrera (£5.0m), whose header cannoned back off the woodwork for Mata slamming home the rebound on the volley.

After the match, Jose Mourinho said that the back-four who started it, Antonio Valencia (£6.5m), Chris Smalling (£6.0m), Eric Bailly (£5.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m), would all likely line-up against Leicester City in Gameweek 1.

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (4-2-3-1): Grant (J Pereira 45’); Shaw (Greenwood 76’), Smalling, Bailly, Valencia (Fosu-Mensah 45’); Herrera, McTominay (Tuanzebe 87’); Mitchell (Darmian 60’), Mata (Gomes 87’), A Pereira; Martial (Chong 60’).

Wolves 1-1 Ajax

  • Goals: Ruben Neves (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Helder Costa (£5.0m)

Ruben Neves (£5.0m) got his first goal of pre-season in a 1-1 draw with Ajax at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium on Thursday.

He found the net from the penalty spot after Helder Costa (£5.0m) was fouled in the area.

FPL midfielder Diogo Jota (£6.5m) lined up as a centre-forward for the first time this summer, having spent one match on the flank and missing another so far.

The former Atletico Madrid man started 10 matches in the Championship as the striker in Nuno’s 3-4-3 system, furthering his appeal in FPL for 2018/19.

He was the focal point for Wolves’ attacking play in the match and had several chances to score in the first-half, although he could not find a breakthrough.

It was Ajax who went into the interval 1-0 up after Donny van de Peek cut inside and found the net from 15 yards.

Wolves levelled from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute when Costa was brought down in the area. Neves stepped up to smash in the equaliser from 12 yards.

WOLVES XI (3-4-3): Norris (Ruddy 45’); Boly, Coady, Bennett (Saiss 71’); Giles, Gibbs-White (Goncalves 71’), Neves, Doherty; Cavaleiro (Ashley-Seal 71’), Jota, Costa.

Arsenal 1-2 Brentford

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m)
  • Assists: None

Arsenal played another secret friendly on Thursday with little information available on it.

The Gunners lost 2-1 to Championship side Brentford after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) made it five goals in three pre-season matches with his equaliser.

The Bees winner came from a Bernd Leno (£5.0m) error in which he failed to deal with a ball into the box.

Arsenal will now head to Singapore for more high-profile friendly matches against Paris Saint Germain and Atletico Madrid.

Would you rather that chance of a pen or go for someone like Sessengon or even downgrade pickford to 4.5 and grab Mkhitaryan?

I would just look elsewhere, there are a few potential sneaky bargains around that 6 million mark, especially the 7 million. I’d be tempted to play around with Jota and Mili to see what you come up with.

Plenty of options that are not defensive mids flattering to deceive.

Is Jota worth the extra 1.5 over Costa? I would have to downgrade Mendy or downgrade Sane to D.Silva in order to afford upgrading Costa to Jota

I have gone with Costa - seems seriously undervalued for his potential and that extra 1.5 comes in very handy at this stage.

Will monitor Jota though. Could still be a bargain - but if he starts well, I'll bring him in then.

After getting triggered by Chelsea's state of affairs of our youth system ( https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/07/20/mata-and-martial-start-as-mourinho-hints-at-gameweek-1-back-four/?hc_page=3#hc_comment_18385652 ), I had brainstorm of all the talent that slipped through our fingers in recent-ish years. The definition of "slipped through our fingers" changes as the list goes on, I'll admit!

    Any I've missed?

    Huth
    Jack Cork
    Ryan Bertrand

    McEachran
    Traore

    Van Ginkel
    Lukaku
    Romeu

Honourable mention - Nketiah. Released in 2015 from our youth, before joining Arsenal youth, and killing it in his first season with them

Yeh, he was mid 20s when he joined after a World Cup.

He was another that I nearly didn't include, but I thought I'd highlight the expectations that were on some of our signings. Felipe Luis is another one, but then you get dragged down the Torres line of thought.

He wasn't a spring chicken when he joined tbf, like 27 iirc?

You get the point though - its criminal what we've scooped up and dumped.

The 3rd Hazard is going through our system now, we'll have to see how he does.

Yeah I geuss but if we´re including senior ready made players then the same conclusion can be done with most teams in mind.
It´s Chealsea´s problems with incorporating their youth players that is the big problem.

Chalobah and Loftus Cheek to be added soon, I imagine. Hard to find that they care for youth development and whatnot. Christensen the only bright spot recently, but that could be it.

Both Chalobah's in fact. I was tempted to add them to the list, but went against it in the end, since there's still hope.

Aina and Abraham are more the other side of the line, even though I'm big fans of the pair of them

Miazga is another to be added soon, although tbf he's unlikely to be able to match Christensen anyways

Aren't Zouma and Van Ginkel still Chelsea players? And I wouldn't include the likes of KDB, Salah and Lukaku when you talk about the youth system, they weren't developed by Chelsea. Without them this list doesn't look so good imho. All mediocre players.

      1. Rotation
        • 5 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

They are indeed. As are Aina and Abraham.

There's a reason I said the definition of slipped through our fingers changes as the list goes on!

The point is, there's a lot of people there that were expected to become big time footballers that didn't make it, or couldn't make it at Chelsea.

There's people that, by now, would be expected to get game time with Chelsea, but none of those are getting it.

Van Ginkel struggled at Stoke but went on to be PSV captain, so who knows what will happen with him

Ok, I understand. I'm also a Chelsea fun and I regret letting KDB go the most. I can understand Salah, because no one would have said back then, that he would become one of the best players in the world. I think it is the mistake of the Chelsea board, becuase if they wanted to develop talented players like KDB, Lukaku and so on, they shouldn't have hired Mourinho, who likes to work with already established players in the first place.

If Kane is guaranteed to start GW1 I'll be very tempted - has high ownership and despite the August hoodoo it's not worth the risk not to have him. It would mean ripping up a lot of my team though to upgrade Kun and add a city mid.

I'm having similar faith in budget mids but the range slightly above. I've got Hughes, Cairney and Jota and am very reluctant to let Cairney go if I eventually drop Tosun to Kamara for extra funds.

I can see this year being a return to big hitting strikers where you have multiple captain picks rather than 451/352 with Kane up top and 2 budget options.

I feel Auba will be more explosive but they might not be too far apart come the end so if you just set and forget Laca that extra 1.5 could be crucial if spent correctly.

You must have a strong looking mid/def then? Strikers do seem to be a good place to get a diff early on but I think I'm just to infatuated with the idea of strikers who are on fire.

The Shaw debate is an interesting one on here, some saying don't get pulled in by Jose's words, some saying a way into United's defence for 5.0 is a must. Which way you swaying? I'm one toe in the 'must have' camp but looking to hear arguments for both sides ...

Depends on how much you're willing to spend and if you're willing to use a transfer on him after the first 2 or 3 GWs. Shaw is an excellent option in the short term with Dalot out injured and Young going to be given an extended rest

If Shaw plays GW1 I quite fancy him. He's made it clear he wantd the LB spot permanently. If it turns out a failure, Trent and Lovren will be back as fab 5.0 options anyway

Exactly, wierdly he is less risky than the Liverpool defence and an easy transfer out 'if' needed. My hope is that he can make that LB spot his own.

I have him in but with Tomkins on the bench as back up (playing a back 3). Not too sure what my exit strategy is though for when he loses his place. Needs looking into.

Hey guys, am I silly for thinking Firmino could be a better option than Aguero - now only is he 1.5mil cheaper but he's also much less of a rotation risk (I assume he'll be back to play GW1 - please correct me if I'm wrong here?)

    Their fixtures are as follows:

Firmino - WHU, cry, BHA, lei, tot
Aguero - ars, HUD, wlv, NEW, FUL

Would appreciate your guys' thoughts on who the better selection is!

    Thanks in advance 🙂

Don't think he's better on a ppm basis, both look fairly priced for what they do but Kun is cap'able so edges it on value.

Do you see Pep playing both Aguero and Jesus together?

Aguero was only knocked out of the WC 6 days before Jesus so not sure that extra additional break will really impact their chance of starting..?

I think if Mendy plays, Jesus will play on the left with Aguero in the centre. If Sane plays, he will be pushed out wide, Jesus or Aguero in the centre, and Mendy will probably miss out. So you kind of have a five way rotation going on. Not to mention B.Silva can play in the centre as well.

That’s my main concern - City have so much top end talent that you can’t say who is going to play with confidence

    2. Silecro

I have both in my team, no point comparing fixtures since they're both fixture proof, able to score in any game. But if you have enough of city coverage, then firmino

      1. burgioaguero
        • 8 Years

I'm struggling to nail down on City assets because I just see them all being rotated.

Three options at the moment for me are Aguero, Sane and Mahrez - I can see them all being rotated though.

Do you reckon Aguero is the best bet out of those three?

Not only best but in my opinion, most nailed, since jesus is not direct threat to him as we have seen pep paired them sometimes

He could. But last season he seemed to be an understudy to Vardy in a single-striker system. And I don't see why that would change this season. Although I would love to see Iheanacho play every week: great player!
