Great Expectations

Potential for Pogba to have best-ever FPL season in 2018/19

Fresh from scoring in the World Cup final and winning the coveted trophy with France, Paul Pogba (£8.0m) could be about to record his best ever season with Manchester United.

The midfielder may miss the first few weeks of the campaign but across the course of 2018/19 there is great potential for him to be an important Fantasy Premier League asset.

A thigh muscle injury between September and November restricted Pogba to just 27 appearances for the Red Devils last season, but he still managed to record his highest ever FPL score of 138 from six goals and 13 assists. No United player was the provider for more goals and only Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) was involved in more than him.

We’ve had a look at some of the reasons why we expect Pogba to improve on that over the next 12 months, even if he will miss the first few weeks of the campaign through extended World Cup leave.

NEW POSITION

The arrival of Fred (£6.0m) at Old Trafford should allow Pogba more freedom to commit to attack this season. With the new signing potentially sat alongside Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) in holding midfield, Pogba will have less defensive responsibilities to concern himself with. Although it must be said that he particularly shone in a slightly deeper role for France next to N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) and Steven N’Zonzi in the World Cup final. At the same time, Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) earned Jose Mourinho’s favour playing as the central attacking midfielder in 2017/18 and Pogba may have to displace him if he hopes to play further up the pitch.

SHOTS FIRED

Pogba clearly has an eye for goal and should surpass his previous goal tally of six this season. Only six midfielders had more shots last season, despite him only playing 27 games. In fact, out of the Premier League’s most trigger happy midfielders in 2017/18, only Mohamed Salah (4.0) and Alexis Sánchez (2.83) averaged more shots per game than Pogba’s 2.81. The Frenchman even registered more shots per match than Lukaku’s 2.5, although the Belgian striker was more accurate. A large number of those efforts came from outside of opposing penalty areas but if Pogba does earn a more advanced role the percentage of those taken inside the box would likely increase.

IN THE MONEY

On the whole, Pogba offered better value than any of Manchester United’s regular starting attacking assets last season. His points-per-match (ppm) of 5.1 could not be beaten by anyone at Old Trafford. The more expensive Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) came in at 4.9 ppm, Lukaku’s was 4.76 ppm while Lingard, while cheaper, had a points-per-match of 3.87. Even if Pogba retains his position in deeper midfield he could still prove better value across the season than Sánchez and Lukaku who are £2.5m and £3.0m dearer than him respectively.

Do you think Woy's Boys would accept a bid for Zaha and PVA in exchange for Lucas Perez, Welbeck, Monreal + 30m? Woy loves Welbeck!

Apparently they've smacked a 70m price tag on him. Arsenal could try offering them 80m + Welbeck instead.

Looks good. If Arsenal offload Monreal and sign a back-up for Kolasinac, I'd be tempted to get him from the start to save the transfer, and possibly just bench him. If they sign proper competition, or don't sell Monreal, then it would be better to follow your proposed route to assess the situation, or to ignore Shaw/Kola oltogether in GW1 plans.

Monreal is probably a better left back to be fair though. Us lot are begging for Kolasinac to start but not sure selling Monreal is really in Arsenal's interests. He was their best player last seasob

          • 8 Years

I agree, but it's one of the few ways for the club to raise money if they need it for big-ish signings. If they don't sell now, he goes for free in 11 months. This could be Kolasinac's time to step up.

It might be better to end up extending his contract and let him gradually become Kolasinas's Lichsteiner-type competition, but its hard to say what the clubs intentions are with Kola. The future or a future back-up.

Delusion is a powerful force, the typical response I'm seeing to this is that Liverpool beat City three times last season. All a bit "football's coming home" except the challenge will probably be over by xmas.

Nice - very similar to mine, the key differences being:

      Douglas over Coleman
      Mhiki over Ramsey
      Costa over Siggy
      Firmino over Zaha

Think I would have doubts over Zaha as a second striker, considering the uncertainty regarding position and a possible transfer. And think Mhiki over Ramsey might have a higher potential upside for 0.5m less.

Ramsey vs Mkhi is close. Pre season will tell which is the better option. I feel Ramsey is more nailed.

Zaha could be Tosun/Wood/King. Just think as of now Zaha looks the best out of all. *Talisman theory*

I fully except you may have a point.....

Will be monitoring in pre-season. I did have Coleman until yesterday, but want to see evidence that he will be able to get forward under Silva like a normally does. Siggy is definitely one to watch too.

Think Mhiki is a more "fun" pick than Ramsey, but accept its horses for courses. If a cheaper striker than Firmino hits form, then I'll consider shifting things around.

Attackers will never impress under BFS. I think he’s priced well, has good fixtures, plays in an attacking team, should be nailed and on set peices maybe not pens but that is also a possibility.

Just nostalgia to Swansea days for me. Marco Silva's attacking strategy seems to be suited to Siggy. Cannot imagine Siggy being benchedin.

Rooney sold so Siggy in the 10 slot and probably back on all set pieces and penalties as he was in his Swansea days.

An attacking manager, two over lapping fullbacks to interact with, and a traditional Center Forward to play off (like Bony/Llorente)

Going without Salah all reason....I know it’s a risk but I prefer to spread the cash over the whole squad

      Thoughts on this?

      Fabs. / foster

      Mendy / Robertson / Coleman / Shaw / wan-biskka

      Sané / siggy / martial / lamela / cairney

      Auba / Firmino / Tosun

Surely Sané must stay in the first team? Or safer to get Aguero instead.?

Want Bellerin, Mkhi and/or Auba by gw3. Until then? Will look at Dilva too but Sané should start

        Looks good for now!

Just gotta wait. Wood > Zaha would only be worth it if no one poaches Zaha, for instance, and if he looks set to reamin in a front 2. Not convinced by the other 7.0s at the moment. Personally prefer PVA to Coleman if you're choosing between, but that's a persnal preference.

You think Mahrez might do better than Sané 1st few game weeks?
