More Man City injuries as World Cup stars return to training

Manchester City picked up some more injuries in their final match of pre-season but have been boosted by the return to training of some of their World Cup stars.

Elsewhere, Everton are struggling to live up to their attacking potential as they tasted defeat once again while Claude Puel complicated matters by making a large number of substitutions as Leicester lost to Udinese.

In another Scout Notes article we assess what the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from the weekend mean for our Fantasy Premier League teams.

STADE RENNAIS 4-1 EVERTON

  • Goals: Richarlison (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m)

Another pre-season defeat for Everton may well discourage the Fantasy interest that been building around their squad for the last few weeks. While only Crystal Palace rank higher for attack potential over the first six Gameweeks, the Toffees have now found the net just twice in five pre-season fixtures since their 22-0 win over ATV Irdning – a fixture it is hard to take seriously.

Cenk Tosun (£7.0m) currently has 9.7 percent ownership but is yet to score outside of that freak result in Austria, and both Zaha and Arnautovic are showing stronger form at the same price point. The Turkish international did have the ball in the net in this recent friendly but was penalised for jumping on the defender. Richarlison (£6.5m) was the man who played the ball to him, and he proved the only positive in a disappointing match. It was him who scored the solitary Everton goal on his full debut for the club, where he was the most creative player.

The Everton midfield was never going to be at its best as Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) and Idrissa Gueye (£5.0m) were making their first starts of the summer, although this was perhaps the most disappointing pre-season defeat so far. The loss at Blackburn could, in part, be blamed on a swathe of substitutions in the second-half disrupting the flow. This home defeat to Stade Rennais featured a line-up close to first-choice for 75 minutes. According to local press, Everton were vulnerable to the counter-attack and were weak in midfield.

It does appear that Everton could be harder to trust with their early season fixtures than we initially thought. New signings at full-back and centre-back are now reportedly probable with Michael Keane (£5.0m) and Phil Jagielka (£4.5m) the current first-choice but struggling to perform well.

Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Theo Walcott (£6.5m) and Ademola Lookman (£5.5m) will all eventually boost the squad with their presence, but it is still unknown when any of them will be able to make their first competitive appearance. It was revealed after Saturday’s match that Pickford will miss the final meeting of pre-season, Valencia’s visit to Goodison Park on Saturday August 4, as a result of his compulsory three-week break following the World Cup. However, the Liverpool Echo reports that he has “been on an individual fitness plan to ensure he is ready for the season opener on August 11 against Wolves.”

EVERTON XI (4-2-3-1): Stekelenburg; Baines, Keane, Jagielka, Coleman; Gueye (Davies 75’), Schneiderlin; Richarlison, Sigurdsson, Sandro (Mirallas 75’); Tosun (Niasse 75’).

LEICESTER CITY 1-2 UDINESE

  • Goals: Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Ricardo Pereira (£5.0m)

It was difficult to learn much from this latest Leicester City fixture as manager Claude Puel rang the changes in a big way. Four players who came on as substitutes were replaced roughly shortly after and nine members of the match squad registered no more than 30 minutes.

FPL midfielder Demarai Gray (£5.5m), who has been used as a forward in recent matches was not involved this time around as Puel handed time to five players returning from World Cup leave. Adrien Silva (£5.0m) was the only one to start the match but Ahmed Musa, Wilfried Ndidi (£5.0m), Yohan Benalouane (£4.0m) and Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.0m) were all involved, the latter getting a late consolation goal. There was also a first appearance in Leicester colours for full-back Ricardo Pereira (£5.0m), who got the assist on Iheanacho’s goal. Of those now back in training the only one not to feature at all was Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m).

After two matches alongside each other, Wes Morgan (£4.5m) and Jonny Evans (£5.0m) were split up in this one the latter coming on at half-time. By all accounts, neither one of them played particularly well and one of them is expected to drop out when Harry Maguire (£5.5m) returns to the squad, although he may not be able to start in Gameweek 1. He and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) are expected back in training next week and it appears that their presence in the squad is sorely needed.

LEICESTER CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Ward (Jakupovic 45’); Fuchs (Pereira 60’), Morgan (Evans 45’ | Benalouane 60’), Johnson (Elder 83’), Amartey (Simpson 60’); Iborra (Musa 60’), Choudhury (Ndidi 60’); Albrighton (Chilwell 30’), Silva (King 30’ | Mendy 60’), Diabate (Maddison 60’); Ulloa (Slimani 30’ | Iheanacho 60’).

BAYERN MUNICH 2-3 MANCHESTER CITY

  • Goals: Bernardo Silva x2 (£7.5m), Lukas Nmecha
  • Assists: Phil Foden (£5.0m), Adrián Bernabé

Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) is still expected to be available for Sunday’s Community Shield despite being withdrawn with an ankle injury in Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Bayern Munich on Saturday. He was pictured in a support boot and on crutches after the match but there was more positive news on Monday.

“Riyad Mahrez has been given the all-clear to return to training later this week after picking up an ankle knock. A scan today has revealed no significant damage, and he could be available for selection for this weekend’s Community Shield against Chelsea.”

Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) and Phil Foden (£5.0m) were also forced off the pitch with the latter nursing “what appeared to be a tweaked hamstring”, according to the club’s website. There has been no update on either of them since then.

Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) was the standout star in the match as he looks to make his case to start in Gameweek 1. He secured a brace after coming on for Mahrez, making him the most involved player in goal-scoring during City’s pre-season campaign.

Leroy Sané (£9.5m) didn’t feature, meaning he is yet to start a pre-season match and has registered just 62 minutes so far this summer – surprising, considering the large number of first-team players absent because of the World Cup. Guardiola reiterated again that there is no injury in his case and that he is still working on his fitness ahead of the Community Shield.

However, the entire squad was handed a boost on Monday afternoon as a large number of World Cup players were pictured training again. That included Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m), Sergio Aguero (£11.0m), Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m), David Silva (£8.5m), Fernandinho (£5.5m), Ilkay Gundogan (£5.5m), John Stones (£5.5m), Vincent Kompany (£5.5m), Ederson (£5.5m) and Fabian Delph (£5.5m). How match fit these players will be, considering they have missed all the pre-season friendlies, is not known. Their returns could mean appearances in the Community Shield and maybe even Gameweek 1, although it is too early to tell. If that is the case though, it could potentially change the way a lot of managers set up their teams – although we will have to track Pep Guardiola’s press conferences between now and the start of the season for more information.

MANCHESTER CITY XI (5-1-3-1): Bravo; Zinchenko, Laporte (Harrison 67′), Garcia, Humphreys, Bolton (Bernabé); Douglas Luiz; Diaz (Gomes 67′), Foden (Garre 85′), Mahrez (B Silva 28′); Nmecha.

Thoughts on my Draft so far? I picked first overall and there are 14 other players.

    Salah, King, Wood, Azpi, Jota

I think you did well to get Wood for the third pick.

Yeah with so many people in the league lots of good players go fast obviously. Still considering my spot I think I have done well so far. With 29 picks in between I am hoping my other MID + DEF choices go under the radar 🙂

Yeah I have not played drafts for FPL but since I moved across the pond I have done a few snake drafts with mates, they are usually for hockey I ain't got a clue and always finish last!!!
With a snake draft last pick can work ok.

Yeah last pick is usually decent. Last year I picked 13/15 and won the league. Waivers play a big part.

Got my draft date coming up next week for the draft league.

I won my mini league last year which consisted of 8 players.

I had 7th pick in the draft last year (probably the worst pick) and still managed to win....mostly because I was the most active in terms of transfers each week.

In the draft I took the approach of using my first 3 picks for strikers.

I don’t think i’ll go this route this year. I’m thinking this year I use my first 3 picks to pick up one striker, one mid, and one defender.

Curious to know what draft strategies you use?

See first post with my draft so far. Gives you an idea. I picked 13 out of 15 last year and won the league by 10 points. Only had 7 losses. There were 14 other players.

    2. The_Adam

I won my draft league by about 60 points last year (10 teams). Had Lukaku and Vardy from the start, picked up Arnie just as he started getting good, and same with Lingard.

Not sure whether I'll be in a draft league this year, but I'd want to pick strikers first as these can be hard to draft in during the season, and of course the really premium mid's.

With defence, I rotated every week with transfers. Made 3-5 transfers a week purely on GK & DF positions. If Brighton had a better game than Liverpool for example, I took out Van Dijk and brought in Dunk, to always have a full GK/DF with nice home fixtures every week. Seemed to work well.

Anyone looking at starting with a 3-5-2 formation?

I'm currently playing with it, not sure I'm super happy, but its pretty strong midfield. Thoughts? I know the defence is pretty light on though.

    Ederson / 4.0
    Robertson Tomkins Cedric/Zanka/Wan-Bis
    Salah KDB Eriksen Mkhitaryan Neves
    Aubameyang Arnautovic (Kamara)

    1. Lav

Im going 3-4-3. Hold off on KDB for now. Neves not the best pick imo. Strikers are fine if you are going 3-5-2. Defense as you said tight. Think Cedric is a trap.

      1. Dirty Harry
        • 8 Years

Could actually drop KDB to Mane and then up Neves to a 5.5 though not too many options at 5.5 really.

Wiltshire @ 5m and bench him. He will be a guaranteed starter.

Neves is like a Kanté. Won’t get many fantasy points, too defensive for a mid.

Him and Ramsey are the only midfielders in the top 15 for points per match last season not given an 8.5M+ price tag this season. Take out Ozil and the next are all 9M+

Same PPM as Hazard, Mane and more than Sanchez last season who are all significantly more than him

Yes, good to know. I also have Ramsey. Both are good value. another player who is excellent value due to great point per minute played is Chris wood. I'll have all 3 of them, any I'm leaving out ?

I like Wood too. Between Him Arnie and Zaha its tough to decide but in terms if goals per game Wood is best of the 3. Hard to tell entirely as Zaha and Arnie played different roles at the start though.

Most with a good points per match are given a high price tag, as if/when they stay injury/rotation free they provide excellent value if theyre cheap enough.

That defence with Lloris factored in too is too rich even for my liking.
It can work if you are prepared to jump on the 5.0 and 5.5s, that will be just as good , when they emerge and gradually upgrade elsewhere. I would rather guess at a bit of value in defence to start with.

I wouldn't want a Spurs double at the back. First couple of games are OK but then it gets tricky for 3 weeks. I'd go for Ederson instead if you want a premium keeper.

I planned to have him this season (when I was putting together a shortlist in my head in May/June!), but with the new manager and system it's a wait and see for me. I'll get on the bandwagon quickly if he's racking up crazy points again.

Moses massive rotation risk though if being deployed as a winger.

I believe Moses will play as a winger this season, as Azpi would most likely play RB, with Zappacosta as back-up.

Chelsea have moved from a wingback system to 4 at the back. Alonso and Moses will be hit as they won’t have the attacking returns of previous seasons.

Sounds like he's favourite to be #1 at the moment. Started all the the friendlies (or at least the majority of them as far as I know). Plus they spent the best part of 20m on him.

Undecided. Basically its a 3 v 3 totalling 19 mil worth of players.

    A) Eriksen 9.5, Tomkins 4.5, Hughes 5.0 or

    B) Zaha 7.0, PVAanholt 5.5, Pedro 6.5

Set A is 3-5-2 formation with 4.5 fwd bench
Set B is 3-4-3 formation with 4.5 mid bench

I see B has more potential. Looks like the money is spread better. What you guys think?

    1. The_Adam
      • 9 Years

If Pedro is going to play a big part for Chelsea then B.

And even if he isn't, it wouldn't be too difficult to transfer him out for another 6.5 mid who is looking good at that price, as there are loads who could turn it on (Jota, Maddison, Richarlison, Elyounoussi, Lamela, Sessegnon, Milivojevic)

B does look like the go, like you said the money is spread better. Could you go richarlison instead of pedro or do you already have him?

Also i prefer the 3 4 3 formation with the abundance of good value fowards

    Rate My Team Please:
    Foster/Fabianski
    Robertson/PVA/Tarkowski/Wan-Bissaka/Cedric
    Salah/Sane/Richarlison/Ramsey/Stephens
    Auba/Zaha/Arnie

Too template? I like the forward line, but seem to be having trouble with the defense, is there a preferred Burnley defender?

    Any help appreciated!

Team looks good and well balanced.
If i had to pick a burnley defender I would go with Ward because he did me well last season. Though Ive heard good things about lowton and he had a preseason game with 3 assists.

Pretty template but nothing wrong with that. There will be no template teams by the 2nd or 3rd week when everyone starts changing things up.

As for Burnley, Ward and Lowton offer better attacking returns than Tark. I don't recall Tark doing great on the bonus pts either.

And I personally prefer Aguero to Auba for the start of the season, but nothing wrong with the Auba pick at all. I'd love both, and either could go points crazy from the word go.

I like it. Bench not the strongest though so you're relying on very little rotation in your starting XI, which shouldn't be a massive problem looking at the players you've got.

If Masuaku is just there as bench fodder, I'd probably go for Stephens instead. Played every game last season I think more or less, and has started all the Brighton friendlies too, so an easy 2-3 points if he's ever needed off your bench at any point.

I am worried about Bailly, and most/all ManU players at this point because of Mourinho's attitude and how it is going to affect the players on-field. Maybe wait for Community Shield and see which ManCity/Chelsea defenders are nailed???

All the United defenders are getting injured and picking up knocks. It's like a football version of Final Destination. I'd be worried if I was Harry Maguire and thinking of joining. He'll probably leave his contract signing and fall down the stairs.

I'd say you'd be very safe with Tomkins for the first 8 GW's. Couldn't ask for a better run of opponents for Palace really. And he's nailed to start.

If there's a problem with him then Jazz Richards would likely take his place at right back, and he's 4.0 as well. But you'd like to hope in 3 weeks time he's back fit and ready by then.

Probably the Norwich in me but I can't see many 5.0's being safer than him, seemed to play most games when he was fit towards the end of last season and popped up with the odd assist/goal

Haven't seen Pritchard in many teams at all so far, but I think he's a good shout at that price. Hudd have a horrible first couple of games, but after that it's not too bad. And he will create chances and pop up with goals.

Yes definitely. With Hoolahan in the squad as well at the time we had some absolute ballers in that final third behind the strikers. Hopefully Leitner, Buendia etc can fill the void this season but not going to be easy.

There should be some premium 5.5 DF's as options by the time the season starts. Maguire if he moves, Bailly if he looks nailed, Luiz if he looks nailed. PVA will score points though. Coleman might do. Was in my early draft before Everton started getting tonked a few times.
