More pre-season problems for Man United as Liverpool dominate

There were contrasting fortunes for Manchester United and Liverpool in their pre-season meeting this weekend.

While Jurgen Klopp’s side once again looked like a team worth trusting with Fantasy Premier League investment, the reasons to avoid Manchester United continue to grow.

We’ve taken a look at the big clash for Scout Notes…

Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool

  • Goals: Andreas Pereira | Sadio Mané (£9.5m), Daniel Sturridge (£6.0m), Sheyi Ojo, Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.5m)
  • Assists: None | Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Shaqiri, Andrew Robertson (£6.0m), Ben Woodburn

Manchester United’s defensive woes worsened over the weekend as they were thrashed 4-1 by Liverpool in Michigan. Chris Smalling (£6.0m) pulled up in the warm-up and was forced out of the game, while Luke Shaw (£5.0m) sat out the match too. That meant that Eric Bailly (£5.5m) had to play in the meeting while carrying an injury himself, and Jose Mourinho also revealed that Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) would miss the start of the season.

“Smalling? I’ve no idea (about a return). Shaw? I’ve no idea. Matic had a surgery. Yes, of course (he is out for the start of the season). I don’t know (about a return). He came from the World Cup with an injury and the time he had to rest in the holiday was not enough to resolve the problem.”

Such a slew of injuries could seriously damage United’s clean sheet prospects for the beginning of the season with Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) potentially out for a month, Diogo Dalot (£5.5m) not available until September and Marcos Rojo (£5.0m) and Matteo Darmian (£5.0m) destined for exits. There hasn’t been too much interest in the Red Devil’s defenders thus far, Bailly the most popular with just 5.8 percent backing. However, David De Gea (£6.0m) has become the most fashionable shot stopper and he could be set for some sales in the coming days. Since Friday, the Spaniard has already lost 0.4 percent ownership, with Ederson (£5.5m) or Alisson Becker (£5.5m) potential alternatives to the United man.

Man United were equally poor at the opposite end of the field, mustering just three shots on goal. One of those was Andreas Pereira’s impressive first-half free-kick but forward players Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) and Juan Mata (£6.5m) were starved of service playing in front of a second-string midfield. Anthony Martial (£7.5m) was not involved again and it looks as if the problems are mounting for Mourinho, which may put Fantasy managers off owning United assets.

“Antonio Valencia comes from holiday – I think too much holiday for him. His condition was not good when he was back, then injury and also go back. Anthony Martial has the baby and after the baby is born – beautiful baby, full of health, thank God – he should be here and he is not here. So we have Alexis (Sanchez) and (Juan) Mata who play every minute of every match and now we have Real Madrid and after that Bayern Munich and that’s our start.”

On the other hand, Liverpool demonstrated their credentials for Gameweek 1 investment with another strong performance. Of particular note was Sadio Mané dispatching his second penalty-kick of pre-season, despite the fact that Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) had won it. Also on the pitch at the time was James Milner (5.5m), long-time taker, and Fabinho (£6.0m) whose history suggested he could be in the conversation. The fact that they did not step up for this one does imply that the Senegalese forward could be set to take spot kicks in the league this season. Salah’s penalty record at Liverpool is scored one, missed one, while Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) has missed two from three he has taken.

Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.5m) put on another good display which could see him force his way into the starting line-up earlier than expected, especially with Firmino still absent. The Swiss international played in an advanced role against Manchester United providing an assist and scoring a spectacular bicycle kick in the second-half. Also pushing for first-team involvement is Daniel Sturridge (£6.0m) whose substitute appearance in this match provided his fourth goal of pre-season – no Liverpool player has more so far.

The battle between Joe Gomez (£5.0m) and Ragnar Klavan (£4.5m) to start at centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) for Gameweek 1 was not furthered by this particular match. Gomez started Liverpool’s previous encounter with Klavan replacing him at half-time, this time around it was the Estonian who got the nod from the beginning. He played 45 minutes before Nathaniel Phillips came on for him while Gomez replaced van Dijk in the 65th minute. We will definitely need to follow this situation more throughout the summer.

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (3-5-1-1): Grant (J Pereira 45’); Fosu-Mensah, Bailly, Tuanzebe (Gomes 81’); Mitchell (Fred 71’), McTominay, A Pereira, Herrera (Bohui 81’), Darmian; Mata (Chong 71’), Sánchez (Williams 81’).

LIVERPOOL XI (4-3-3): Grabara (Kelleher 45’); Moreno (Robertson 65’), Klavan (Phillips 45’), van Dijk (Gomez 65’), Camacho (Chrivella 65’); Lallana (Woodburn 45’), Fabinho (Jones 65’), Milner (Grujic 65’); Mané (Ojo 45’), Solanke (Sturridge 65’), Salah (Shaqiri 45’).

    I would appreciate some help:

    Either

    A) Alonso + Bellerin (GW3 onwards) + Jota

    Or

    B) Mane + Cedric + Tomkins

      A. more potential starters.
      B. more points from Mane but week bench players. Southhampton Def is very suspect.

I've made a few changes this morning - keen to get some opinions!

    £0.5itb
    Fabianski
    Robbo, Tomkins, Ward, Cedric*
    Salah (C), Mané*, Richarlison*
    Kun, Auba, Arnie

    (Speroni) (Stephens, Gunnarsson, W-B)

    Possible changes:
    Richarlison could be Pedro
    Mané could be Eriksen
Cedric could be Tark (Burnley def double-up)

    What do you think?
    Cheers

      Bravo nice team!

Would literally use the 0.5m to upgrade Speroni. Last thing you want is having to make a keeper transfer if something happens to Fab.

I don't like Cedric and I think Fabianski will struggle to keep CSs for the first 10 games or so. Apart from that, very similar to my team

Who do you prefer as a £4.5m GK to Fab?

I also don't like Cedric but the alternatives are a Burnley double-up or BOU!

I think Fab is a solid pick. Might not get many cleanies, but he will make up for it with steady save points.

seeing as you already have Aguero/Salah/Mané as captaincy options, perhaps Aubameyang to Lacazette, which would leave you with a spare 2 mill to upgrade that defence a touch.

I hear what you're saying but I don't rate Laca so much for FPL returns despite playing centrally

If I made that move what would you recommend re. defence?

Very nice team, but one very small detail: swap your 4.0 goalie in case you for some reason later on would want to pick up another Palace player.

    Ederson | Foster
    Robertson | Shaw | Daniels | Lowton | Wan-Bissaka
    Salah | Eriksen | B. Silva | Pedro | Gunnarsson
    Auba | Wood | Arnie

Playing 3-4-3... any thoughts on this?

Open to any suggestions. Thanks chaps.

    Ederson (Boruc)
    Robertson, Mendy, Peltier, Wan-Bissaka, Malone

You may be left with only 1 starting defender in GW1. Mendy is surely not playing his first match after 8 month lay-off against Arsenal in title-defending PL season.

    Morning all,

Any thoughts on the below squad?

    Ederson / Button

Robertson / TAA / Cedric / Schlupp / Wan Bissaka

    Sane / Salah / Richarlison / Pedro / Ward

    Laca / Aguero / Wilson

    Couple of caveats:
    - TAA is a risk as might not start the season, can be lovren / Gomez from liverpool if either of those look more secure
    - cedric and schlupp could be any 4.5 defenders, i'm not overly wedded to them

    Any thoughts appreciated. Cheers all

is it? Ederson and Robertson as premium options, and then TAA or Lovren who will be playing for a team in the top 3 / 4.

Agree that the 2 4.5's don't look great, although i'm struggling really for better options in that bracket.

    2. The Big Fella

I'd keep Schlupp as he is playing OOP but I'd get rid of Cedric. S'ton not doing well defensively in pre-season. I'd get rid of TAA too as he is not nailed (unless information comes out saying otherwise). Could get a Burnley defender for TAA as they have nice opening fixtures and are defensively sound.

yeah good shout on the Burnley defender. As I say TAA or lovren would depend on any news, just quite like the idea of the double up.

i'll have a little look at burnley and a rethink about 4.5m instead of cedric.

        thanks

    Foster (Stekelenburg)
    Ward, Robertson, Alonso (Cédric, Wan-Bissaka)
    Sánchez, Sané, Salah, Townsend (Masuaku)
    Wood, Morata, King

This is my current team. I don't see much good value for forwards at the moment so have gone with a more expensive midfield and defence. I know Morata is a strange choice but think this my be his breakout season ans only owned by 3%. Looking to swap Morata out for Laca after gw2 tho.

Alonso may well not be playing an advanced role under the new manager. He may not play at all. I'd get rid. I don't like Cedric. I don't think Sanchez is a good choice as United look poor so far in pre-season (and he was shite last year). Morata is a terrible choice. I don't like your forwards in general.

    Thoughts on this team?

    GK: Fabi - Foster
    DEF: Bailly - Monreal - Gomez (W-B + Peltier)
MID: Martial - Salah - Richarlison Mahrez - Chalobah
    ATK: Aguero - Aubameyang (Kamara)

Any changes? I'd quite like to find a spare .5 mil to upgrade Peltier, and then play a 4-4-2.
    Cheers!

Hi - my feeling is that those 3 defenders will start the season, and that they offer cheap ways into top four sides.
What exactly is it that makes you think the defence is horrendous?

Will Monreal play? Or Gomez? Also some injury doubts there. Need to upgrade either Chalobah or Kam. 3 at the back tends to be best.

      Getting there.

Pretty good, though Arnie on the bench is questionable and Cedric in saves .5 over Bertie.

I agree just don't know If Cedric will start GW1 not Joined the team yet?

Don’t like the Wilshere and Neves picks personally, 10.5 is far too much to spend on keepers, you could downgrade keepers to upgrade the defense

    A) Aguero, Lacazette, Richarlison

    B) Aubameyang, Sane, Wood

Pros of a) get everton attacking coverage early on for good fixtures, potentially easier to move to Kane if two big hitters up front, Lacazette is priced slightly low imo

Pros of b) Sane less likely to be rotated than Aguero I think early with sterling phased in and Mahrez, still prefer Aubameyang to Lacazette, Wood good record last season and fixtures

How is the below plan looking?

    Patricio
Kiko Femenia / PVA / Robertson
    Salah / Mkhi / Mane / Richarlison
    Zaha / Aubameyang / Arnoutavic

    Bench - Mendy / Stephens / Malone / Norris

Plan is to bring Mendy in for GW2 for Kiko. I believe Kiko will outscore Mendy in GW1 with Brighton at home vs Mendy away fixture at Arsenal.

Kiko was behind Janmaat for the RB spot at the end of last season

A very good afternoon to you all, my brothers in #FPL

I really think I have nailed it here...

    Foster
    Zappacosta/Robbo/Schlupp

    Aguero/Arnau

    Subs: Mendy/AWB/Quaner

If Mahrez is out for a while, I won’t be able to resist Bernardo Silva at 7.5m.

Excellent pre-season form and impressed every time he was called upon last season.

Sure, it’s a bit risky but at 7.5 there are loads of options that you can trade down to such as Mkhi, Ramsey after their first two tough fixtures.

    What do you reckon?
