The Digest – FPL Gameweek 2

Our Gameweek 2 coverage ends with this regular look back at a player, team and discussion point that attracted our interest in the weekend’s matches.

Danny Ings got off the mark in a Southampton shirt to command our attention, while Chelsea’s early-season displays bode well for their Fantasy Premier League assets.

We also look at the rise and rise of the left-back.

The Player

After a promising 34-minute cameo at St. Mary’s on the opening weekend of the season, Danny Ings (£5.5m) backed up that performance with his first Southampton goal in the 2-1 defeat to Everton on Saturday.

Ings is currently the third-most bought forward of the round, with his price tag being an obvious source of attraction.

Sergio Aguero was the only player to attempt more shots than Ings (six) in Gameweek 2 and the former Liverpool man could well have had a second goal to his name but for the sprawling reflexes of Jordan Pickford in the first half.

Ings on occasion came short from his centre-forward position to collect the ball in the Gameweek 1 encounter with Burnley, but his collective penalty box touch count should assuage any fears that he plays too deeply to represent a potent goal threat: the Saints striker already has more touches in the opposition area than the likes of Marko Arnautovic, Cenk Tosun, Troy Deeney and Aleksandar Mitrovic in the mid-price forward bracket, despite playing fewer minutes than any of the above.

Only Aguero and Mitrovic among FPL forwards have had more attempts on goal than Ings so far this season, with eight of the Southampton striker’s nine shots coming from inside the opposition box.

No player in Ings’ position has created more chances than him in 2018/19, either.

While Southampton have yet to taste victory this season, their chance creation rate bodes well for Ings’ prospects in front of goal: only Manchester City and Chelsea have carved out more opportunities than the Saints so far.

With fixtures against Leicester, Crystal Palace and Brighton to come in the next three Gameweeks (two of which are at home), Ings looks excellent value for money as a budget third (or even second) striker. His £5.5m price tag means he could easily be benched for the subsequent fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea, with his low cost allowing the freed-up budget to be spent on improving positions elsewhere.

While the Saints are well-stocked with forwards, the struggles of Charlie Austin in front of goal this season and Mark Hughes’ switch to a 4-4-2 (i.e. there is space in the starting XI for two forwards in this system) means that there should be little risk of reduced pitch-time in the short term.

The Team

The appointment of Maurizio Sarri as head coach of Chelsea in July was met with enthusiasm among Blues fans and Fantasy managers alike, given the 59-year-old’s impressive record at Napoli.

No Serie A side had scored more goals than Napoli (251) during Sarri’s three-year tenure, while their number of chances created (526) in 2017/18 was greater than not just all other Serie A clubs but also than the 20 sides in the Premier League. Manchester City were the only club in either England or Italy to have more attempts on goal than Napoli (656) in the season just gone, meanwhile.

Despite the sky-high expectations for Chelsea in the Fantasy community, the general consensus was that it would perhaps take a while for Sarri to impress his footballing doctrine on his new squad, particularly given the late nature of the veteran’s appointment (four weeks before the start of 2018/19) and that several of his squad had a brief pre-season due to their participation in the World Cup.

Sarri, indeed, warned just before Gameweek 1 that it would take “two to three months” for his side to get up to speed.

With two wins from two and six goals scored (only City have found the net on more occasions), however, “Sarri-ball” is already in full swing.

Chelsea’s next four fixtures – Newcastle United (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (h), West Ham United (a) – are appealing and their underlying attacking statistics make for encouraging reading.

Only Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have had more attempts on goal than Chelsea (37) in the first two Gameweeks of the season, though the fact that the Blues faced a more difficult fixture in Arsenal last weekend should count in their credit. Sarri’s troops, indeed, racked up 24 shots on Petr Cech’s goal over those 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have also carved out more chances and registered more successful passes in the final third than all other Premier League sides bar Pep Guardiola’s irresistible reigning champions.

All this has been done mostly without the services of Eden Hazard (£10.5m) and Mateo Kovacic (£6.0m), two important pieces of Sarri’s jigsaw who have been reduced to substitute appearances so far this season as they continue to build up match fitness.

Chelsea’s impressive start has translated into FPL points: Marcos Alonso (£6.6m) is the highest-scoring defender in the game, Pedro (£6.6m) has back-to-back league goals and Hazard has two assists to his name already despite only playing a total of 43 minutes.

N’Golo Kante (£5.0m), meanwhile, has suddenly and improbably become something of a budget goal threat, with Jorginho (£5.1m) now tasked with the metronomic role at the base of the midfield three. No player had more penalty box touches than Kante in the Arsenal match, while the French international has already registered four attempts on goal – all of which were from inside the opposition area – so far this season; Kante had the same number of penalty box touches (five) after ten league appearances last season as he managed in 90 minutes of action at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

No FPL midfielder had more attempts on goal (six) than Pedro in Gameweek 2, meanwhile.

While Alonso’s penalty box touches and shot count are down on 2017/18 for the opening two Gameweeks, the Chelsea left-back still represents a potent threat from his new “orthodox” left-back role: unsurprisingly, no Premier League defender has had more attempts on goal than Alonso this season.

That Alonso next faces opposition with potential problems at right-back – DeAndre Yedlin (who looks the likeliest to recover) and Javier Manquillo struggling with knocks, Isaac Hayden suspended – is all-the-more encouraging. Even Cardiff and West Ham face uncertainty in that position, given that Neil Warnock and Manuel Pellegrini have switched right-backs just two Gameweeks into the season.

The Blues’ defence is perhaps something of a concern, given that they conceded 15 attempts on goal and five big chances to Arsenal on Saturday, but with Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.5m) compensating with attacking returns, many will happily overlook those issues for the time being.

While many FPL managers are already investing heavily in Chelsea assets (four Blues players feature in the top ten most-bought midfielders of this round), Gameweek 3 might be the final audition for the rest of us. A subsequent double-header of Bournemouth and Cardiff at Stamford Bridge is surely too good to overlook.

The Talking Point

Fantasy Football Scout members Ginkapo and Goldman have both raised Hot Topics in recent days to question/offer explanations why left-backs are performing so exceptionally well in the first two Gameweeks of the season.

Five of the seven defenders who have scored 15 points or more so far in 2018/19 are left-backs, with another of the septet – right-back Ricardo Pereira – spending a large chunk of his time “out of position” in midfield.

The underlying statistics certainly back up their FPL returns.

The three defenders with the most attempts on goal this season are all left-backs, with Benjamin Mendy and Ben Davies (who is not even among the highest-scoring players in this position in FPL) narrowly trailing Marcos Alonso in terms of shots fired.

Half of the 12 defenders (and three of the top four) with the most penalty box touches this season are also left-sided full-backs/wing-backs, while the five defenders who have created the most chances in the opening two Gameweeks are Jose Holebas, Mendy, Davies, Ben Chilwell and Andrew Robertson – all five of them with one position in common.

It is difficult to offer a satisfactory explanation as to why this trend has developed. What should be noted, though, is that two of the three defenders who provided the most assists last season – right-backs Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker – have played just one Premier League game so far this season, with Davies and Mendy on the opposite flanks having 180 minutes to their names.

Trippier, indeed, delivered more crosses than any other FPL defender in Gameweek 2 and had as many penalty box touches as Alonso and Robertson.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have replaced a genuine wing-back in Victor Moses in the right-back position with a man who has spent several seasons at centre-half: Cesar Azpilicueta.

While the omens are good for our assets at left-back, we are only two Gameweeks into the campaign. With Trippier and Walker yet to get up to full speed but showing promising signs in their sole appearances of 2017/18, the dominance of the left-sided full-back could be a fleeting fad. Arsenal’s fixtures, for example, are set to take a turn for the better and the attack-minded Hector Bellerin – while suspect defensively – could suddenly present himself as an attractive option in the £5.5m bracket in the coming Gameweeks. Antonio Valencia has also yet to feature for Manchester United this season through injury.

At the moment though, we certainly can’t argue against Messrs Mendy, Alonso and Robertson as premium defensive picks. It would be a brave FPL manager who attempted to pre-empt the resurgence of the right-back (or, indeed, centre-half) by overlooking that aforementioned trio.

I'm surprised Aguero isn't topping the captain votes.

Playing a promoted side with a leaky defence.

When you look at their goals conceded it tells a different story

      Against Everton

1st goal - lucky deflection at a set play falls to Rich
2nd goal - can't do much about it, good goal

      Against Leicester

1st goal - own goal, unlucky
2nd goal - big deflection on what would have been an easy shot to save, very unlucky

Not saying Aguero will blank or anything, but Wolves are not a jokes even though people are writing them off already

1st goal that Everton scored was straightforward bad defending.

Wolves conceded the few chances in the PL so far. It's been harsh on them atm.

Yeah but this is Aguero and Man City. A little different to Everton and Leicester.

Yeah, they've been a bit unlucky. They do seem to play quite open though which is scary with Man City up next.

There seems to be plenty of discussions surrounding Liverpool assets for their tough run of fixtures coming up so I thought I might as well give my own opinion as a fan! After GW4 their fixtures are - (tot),(SOT),(che),(MCY).
Results against other Top 6 sides in 2017/18:
    Arsenal : 4-0, 3-3
    Chelsea : 1-1, 1-0
    City : 5-0, 4-3
    United : 0-0, 2-1
    Spurs : 4-1, 2-2

Chelsea (Under Conte) and United play a very organised, structured brand of football meaning the games were much tighter and Liverpool didn't have the space. However Liverpool don't play United until GW17 and Chelsea go into the group below due to their high press and possession football under Sarri. Therefore there is no point analysing these teams results.

*It is worth noting Liverpool played with 10 men in the 5-0 thrashing by City which massively affected the game so i'll ignore that below.

Arsenal, City and Spurs all play open, expansive football which favoured Liverpool's attack. They scored 14 goals in 5 games against them (2.8 goals per game). They also conceded 12 (2.4 per game). This shows they should score plenty but concede plenty. However Liverpool have massively improved their defense since these fixtures with the arrivals of Alisson and VVD aswell as the development of Arnold, Gomez and Robertson.

Liverpool's attack all relies on exploiting space in behind or in the midfield and they are given this space against teams that press high which Spurs, City and Chelsea do. When Spurs and City press they leave space in behind for Salah and Mane to exploit. When Chelsea press they leave space in the midfield for Firmino and Keita to exploit and create overloads in the attack. This means they score much more goals as reflected above.

Conclusion - In 2017/18 Liverpool scored 2.2 goals per game but averaged 2.8 against the teams above. This is a massive increase and is why I wouldn't be thinking about selling Pool attacking assets but actually getting in another one! As for the defense although it's improved I wouldn't expect any CS pts. Robertson and Arnold could very likely pick up attacking pts but I wouldn't count on it. There is also a chance of CL rotation after GW5 but I wouldn't expect Klopp to rotate against these teams. So if you only have Salah i'd try fit in another one!

They can’t. Chelsea, City and Spurs press high. Their whole system revolves around it. They can’t sit back and PTB as they won’t score and struggle to defend that way. In training they practise pressing. They don’t practise sitting deep and hitting teams on the counter

Sample size is still relatively small.

I think Liverpool can still keep scoring in these difficult fixtures but it might be hard to predict who will be amongst the points (except Salah ofc who seemed to thrive in these matches last season)

And it's about the players you could get instead as well - if Hazard starts firing, he could become essential but it's hard to have both him, Salah and Aguero.

Salah and Mane will be the ones exploiting the space being fed in by Keita and Firmino. This is what happened last year.

I’m 0.5 off doing Bernardo and Arnie to Hazard and Ings so it’s definitely possible shaving that off my team. IMO Salah and Mane are essentials especially over this run.

Watching Bilva last game reminds me situation in fantasy WC with Belgium team where we had Munier and Carrasco plaing as WBs but one was def (like Mendy) and other mid (like Bilva).

I was a big advocate of Bilva in pre-season. I'm worried about him now that Dilva is back and starting. I can't really see Bilva being used as right attacking mid in the 4123 when Pep has Mahrez and Sterling available.

Could be very wrong, no-one knows what Pep will do at the end of the day.

This is my WC team, what do you think? I’m a bit fearful of not owning Mane but I think it has potential to go through to January with, with FT’s.

        Ederson

        Salah Mkhi Richarlison
        Ings Kun Zaha

Just had a look at Mark's team after all that commotion caused by FPL Virgin 😀

Tbf, the only players in his team that need to be transferred out are Jota, Mahrez, Sanchez and potentially King. And the only player he MUST bring in is Aguero. Mane maybe but Liverpool's fixtures turn soon. And he could've done this through these sales.

That's a -8. I don't think a -8 warrants a wildcard. The Virg may not be entirely wrong even though he loves to exaggerate and sensationalize things 🙂

Ya I think if a -8 is NEEDED (not just wanted) then it warrants a WC. Most people tend to use their WC before GW7 anyway, so if something goes very wrong between now and then (Red cards, injuries, etc) hits can be taken to resolve them, probably needing -8 or less. If no disaster happens then you've saved yourself -8 and from GW7 are on a better footing than most.

Why take a -8 when you've got off to a bad start? Points are even more precious.

            It's a marathon.

He's at 1.1m OR, that's totally alright after 2 weeks. I remember so many top managers here that were outside 1m last season after 2 weeks, while I was inside top 400k, and many of them ended the season higher than me.

A -8 is a -8 whether you take it now or later in the season. You usually wildcard if you need to make massive changes like a -16. A wildcard may save your precious 8 points now, but you can use it later to save more than that.

            1. Twisted Saltergater

I don't believe in rumbling along using FT's as sticky plasters, before hitting the inevitable wildcard 6 gameweeks down the road, and not maximising your point scoring in the meantime. I don't think Mark plays the game like that either.

It is an absolute pain taking a -4 or a -8 to get in a player when your ML rival already has them and has already benefitted from their points. Hell, I'd rather pick an alternative like Walcott over Richarlison to see if the points can be made in a different way!

So, I'd exhaust all options to avoid points hits and put yourself in a position where a strong bench saves you if there's injuries / rotation before January.

No way is a -8 worth a wildcard - it's 8 points ffs. Minimum is -16. There is no early wildcarder on here who wouldn't swap 8 points for another wildcard in a few weeks.

Weirdly enough, he said in the Scoutcast that he was going to keep it longer this season unlike last season where he was tempted to use it early as long as he could avoid hits.

I think Aguero triggered some panic in him and he's playing it like a sprint.

He hasn't used any FT yet either so a -8 this week or a -4 this week and next week would tidy up his team quite nicely. I suppose he has something in mind that needs 5 or 6+ transfers

          😀

Yeah, I generally agree that he could have fixed it but we'll see what he does. Rearranging team structure I would think.

At least for me it's really hard to take a -8 or -12 when I already feel like I'm way behind. So if he looks at mini leagues and thinks he's already 50-60 points behind then points hits feel really like just falling further behind.

I've had a bad start too. I'm only 8 points ahead of him. 🙂

After GW2, I posted my team here and asked people if they would wildcard it. I didn't reveal how many points I was on. Everyone replied "not at all" or "no way".

In the aftermath of a bad GW2, those knees tend to jerk and I was quite tempted too. But I thought I'll sleep on it or ask some people here and since the next day, I haven't even thought about wildcarding 🙂

But I do agree he may be rearranging team structure. Let's see.

I've only really looked at his team now.

              King > Aguero
              Sanchez > 4.5
I have a feeling he'll do Zaha > Ings but maybe not
              Tomkins > Alonso?
              VVD > Robertson?
              Jota upgrade?

Why would he have to sell Zaha and Tomkins? Both great picks until GW9 or so.

VVD to Robertson is a good move but a luxury move. I don't think any VVD owners are doing that.

                OUT: King + Sanchez + Mahrez + Jota = 32.5m

                IN:

                1. Aguero + Mane + Kante + Pedro/Walcott/Maddison = 32.2m
                2. Aguero + Mane + 4.5 + Mkhi = 32.2m

I would've done one of these. He could bench Kante or the 4.5 mid and it would be a 343.

I don't mean those are all moves he has to do but moves I think he probably will do. Agree that Zaha and Tomkins are good picks but I think there are better picks. I think he'll only go with one 7.0m forward.

Yeah, 2 is what I would have done but I'm big on the psychological boost of a WC so think it could work out nicely

Already have Fraser though so bit worried about having them both, keep thinking one would cover Bournemouth enough

Ings has never been penalty taker at any club. Taken 5 professionally and missed 2 of those.

Yeah, I think decide which one out of Zaha, Arnie and Bilva you're happy losing.

Personally prefer a 4.5 mid to a fwd and you've got to be worried Bilva got no returns on Sunday so would do the straight swap.

I am going to wait. I did King > Igs for FT and will roll the other til next GW and get Mkhi then. Mkhi is .5m cheaper (at the moment) so there's room to move.

I'm the same but then what if he plays central or basically non right wing back and returns a goal and assist?

I have the exact same midfield as the OP so it's something I'm debating all week.

It's city so there definitely is. Just playing devils advocate.

It's silly to plan a transfer before you see how they play. It's only been 2 weeks

3 but he is also the cheapest so it's a bit hard to say. Purely points wise Id fancy the others

1 - Richarlison. He's a bandwagon waiting for everyone to jump off.

What happened to the Bilva love!?! Reading the posts on here last week he seemed an absolute must have...

I’m keeping him, think he’s the best value out of all their likely starting mids.

He’s shown that he’s versatile enough to play wide or centrally.

Think I’m only going to lose interest when De Bruyne comes back into the reckoning.

Would you Coleman --> Monreal on a FT?

Arsenal fixtures ease from now on but I fear Monreal might be rotated with Emery saying Lichsteiner could play on the left.

So Mkhitarian is to rise tonight probably and Mahrez likely to fall by deadline. Mahrez' minutes so far suggest he can be benched ay any time while even if he starts he can get hooked early. I think Arsenal will come back this week at home to smash West Ham. I have 1 FT and thinking i'll make the change. Anyone doing this?

If that is what you believe then you should go for it.

The counter argument is that you should save your free transfer. 🙂

I got in Mkhi on Monday, but in hindsight Pedro might be the better pick? Can't go too wrong with either though.

I don't rate Pedro as an option. He is sure to see the bench with Hazard and Willian around.

Not sure, seems odd that they'd offer Willian to Real Madrid if they really wanted him

I did this as part of a 3 FT hit.

Mahrez could play and smash it but the money saved was worth it. Arsenal could have scored 3 or 4 more if they had been finishing well and if Mkhi plays he'll get points.

I'd go for it if I were you (clearly, because I did!)

I'd do it. I actually swapped out Gross for Mhiki - based upon upcoming fixtures, just wanted Mhiki on my team (may regret it)
