FPL Question Time – Hazard vs Liverpool options and Champions League rotation

Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers have answered some of your questions in time for your Gameweek 6 preparation.

Key subjects such as how to get Eden Hazard (£10.8m) into our squads, whether a double-up on Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Sadio Mané (£10.0m) is still viable, and Champions League rotation are all touched on this week.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 6 Question Time:

Chief #FPL Manager – This man has finished inside the top one percent six times in his career as a Fantasy manager and is one of the biggest influencers in the FPL Twitter-sphere

Lee from FPL Family – One half of the popular married couple who play FPL together and run a YouTube channel.

Simon March – Winner of FPL in 2014/15.

Question 1 – Chief FPL Manager

Having missed Hazard’s points the last two Gameweeks, is he worth missing another week due to my Salah and Mané double up against Southampton or do I drop one of them for the Chelsea man?

“I was fortunate enough to acquire Hazard during the international break, courtesy of my wildcard. I considered the Mané and Salah ‘double up’ as a serious option, but simply couldn’t ignore Hazard in part after watching his scintillating performances during the World Cup, along with his proven FPL pedigree.

“I also experimented with the possibility of having Mane, Salah and Hazard in one team (along with Alonso and Aguero) but it would have unbalanced and decimated the rest of my squad.

“Instead, I opted for Hazard and Salah, despite the Egyptian costing more than Mane. This wasn’t an easy decision to make, but I took into account their ownership levels and concluded that it’s easier to switch from Salah to Mane if needed, rather than the other way around.

“Crucially, to his benefit, Hazard was given sufficient rest in the first two Gameweeks. But more importantly, I think he will feature far less in Chelsea’s Europa league matches than Liverpool’s reliance on Mane and Salah to top their Champions’ League games, which makes Hazard a must-have in FPL.

“Get Hazard in sooner rather than later even if it means selling one of your premium Liverpool assets. It may be worth considering this as early as Gameweek 6 in case Hazard’s price rises again.”

Question 2 – FPL Family

Aguero is doubtful and with Champions League football could be susceptible to rotation by Pep. Is Lukaku the best alternative?

“First things first, the Aguero heel injury doesn’t look too bad and he shouldn’t miss too many minutes through injury. In terms of rotation though, we could well see a reduction in minutes around the Champions League.

“But having watched Aguero so far this year, as well as hearing his manager’s recent comments on his form, I firmly believe he’s their main man this year.

“There’s no doubt that Pep and City will be going all out for the Champions League this year though, so if rotation is a concern, then you are right to consider Lukaku as a viable alternative.

“With four goals to Aguero’s three, Lukaku already has a higher goal involvement rate than the Argentinian – and a higher conversion rate (26.7% to Aguero’s 12%).

“Aguero’s creativity can’t be ignored though. He creates a chance twice as often as the Manchester United man – every 32 minutes to Lukaku’s 64. As a result, he also dominates the Bonus Points, with excellent underlying BPS when compared to the Belgian.

“My advice: stick with Aguero. If you simply HAVE to transfer him out though, then look at Lukaku. However, also consider the value in the lower price brackets. Zaha is back and winning games for Palace, Wilson’s looked incredibly lively in a Bournemouth side with great upcoming fixtures and Arnautovic turned on the style against Everton in Gameweek 5.

“Given the clamour for premium midfielders such as Sterling, Hazard and Mané, the sale of Aguero for one of the budget strikers, should surely only happen if you’re looking to bring in one of the heavy hitters in that position.”

Question 3 – Simon March

Whether Ben Mendy was rotated or injured, at what point (or how many players) does any absence due to rotation become unacceptable for premium players?

“It’s not a new problem but rotation feels like it’s becoming a bigger one. The best teams now have so many options in their squads, rotation is practically inevitable. In FPL, it seems like an added premium we pay for owning players from the biggest teams.

“How much rotation is too much, I think, depends partly on the position. Benched premium defenders can be frustrating and defender cameos are the worst. Overreacting and ditching players we’ll want in the long term is unlikely to be the answer, but frequently-rotated premium defenders probably aren’t worth holding on to either.

“I’m not sure the same applies to premium attacking players though. For example; because of how Man City play, Aguero might get as many chances in a 30-minute cameo as most strikers will in a full match. Assessing players by the number of opportunities they get to score, rather than by the number of the minutes they play, might be the way forward in a world that won’t stop rotating.

“It’s hard to predict who will get dropped but we know when players are most likely to be rotated; during periods of heavy fixture congestion, especially any involving Champions League football. Having a decent bench and selecting a sensible vice-captain become ever more important tactics during these phases.”

I wouldn’t have just two. CL has arrived: IMHO, you need all three for captaincy selection/rotation. With just two you are f#%$&d if one of your duo gets injured.

why is that so? If one gets injured he can just make a transfer. If a captain doesn't play, he will have a reliable vicecaptain

Fraser. If Vardy had still been on the pitch when the penalty was awarded, Maddison would have been a 2 pointer. Definitely not worth an extra .9 over Fraser.

Which is the more urgent issue here:

    Pickford, arnie or Walcott?

    Mendy shaw alonso robbo AWB
    Mane Salah(c)
    Zaha arnie kun
    Stek Walcott hjojberg Stephens

    Pickford > 4.5keeper

    This is my current team

    Ederson Hamer*
    Alonso Mendy Trent Cook* Wan-B
    Salah Mane* Richarlison Fraser Billing*
    Aguero Zaha King*

plan would be to replace the starred players with Button, Doherty, Hazard, Ward and Jimenez on a wildcard next week.

    Sound a good plan?

I'm going off every player at their best, to form a team.

Neymar probably has the most individual talent between both squads, but isn't as much of a team player as SFM.

You didn't mention that in your post 🙂

I just thought of the best team who would work well together. Of course Neymar is in the conversation if it's based on individual talent.

Fabinho was one of the best DM's in Europe at Monaco over the past 2 seasons. PSG themselves admitted they tried to sign him. Just because he hasn't broken into a winning Liverpool team after 5 games, it doesn't mean he has regressed. Similar to Mahrez at City.

As for Neymar he probably has the most individual talent, but I don't see him sacrificing himself for the team. My XI is purely based on a team. Those XI would run through brick walls for each other, imo.

Wow you really rate Fabinho very highly? I think he’s an above average central mid, but nothing overly special. He wouldn’t get into the Real (or Atletico) teams for example, or Barca, Bayern, Brazil etc. I don’t think he’d start for Juve either. He’ll get some games for Liverpool eventually and could improve. But just need to be careful with the over statements around him.

I am not writing you off, at all. Will be a great game if they play the way they play in the league. Thing is people are underrating Neymar as if he is unproven kiddo, guess the WC had big effect on him. Thinking that Van Dijk won't have any problem vs the front three. If you watched France vs Netherlands Mbappe gave him a hard time and could've done more damage.

As I said it will be a good game hopefully.

If all transfers cost 4 points (minus your wildcard), how would this change how you play the game?
Would you make less transfers to avoid hits, or would you be more aggressive with moves knowing that there is no benefit to waiting a week to avoid a -4?

i cant rmbr which one, but there was a fantasy game which gave everyone a finite number of transfers.

So you had to be prudent with them, especially at the start.

That would be a challenge, I can imagine many would use them up early on, and some would be too conservative, would be tough to judge.

    3. SADIO SANÉ
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 7 months ago

probably wouldn't change anything - I honestly don't think 4 points is a lot in most cases, I attempted (as an experiment) to not take any hits last season and it was miles harder and I didn't score as highly as usual.

If you take a hit for two players that you will actually play (and they are both upgrades in your mind) it's a 2-point hit for each player - if you're not terrible at this game that will pay off way more than it doesn't imo.

      1. SADIO SANÉ
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 7 months ago

in this case a -8 for two players would be offset by the fact most people would be taking a -4 each week, in most cases I'd rather swap two players for -8 than just one for -4 (move funds between midfield/attack etc.)

More conservativly i guess. I think we should be allowd 2 free tranfers. Allows for more activity which is usually better for the game as a whole.

I'd prefer no transfers at all, a WC every 8 weeks - so people have to stick with their decisions longer

That would be interesting, would actually make the game less time consuming week to week too. The big hitters competition would be tougher to choose as well.

Hmm yea I see your point would make formation changes and money movement easier.

Really sad to see there's not even one article about Uefa Champions League Fantasy.

    Not everything revolves around FPL.

Aguero rotation stats from last year to November:
Date Team Score (h/a) minutes goals/notes
      9/9 Liverpool 5-1 (h) 90 (1 goal)
      13/9 Feyenoord 0-4 (a) 60 (1 goal)
      16/9 Watford 0-6 (a) 90 (3 goals)
      23/9 Palace 5-0 (h) 90 (1 goal)
      26/9 Shaktar 2-0 (h) 85
      30/9 Chelsea 0-1 (a) Injured car crash
      14/10 Stoke 7-2 (h) Injured
      17/10 Napoli 2-1 (h) unused sub
      21/10 Burnley 3-0 (h) 76 (1 goal)
      24/10 Wolves 0-0 (h) 120
      28/10 West Brom 2-3 (a) unused sub

The only real rotation was after his car crash and after the Wolves league cup went to extra time.

He's the main man its clear as day.. he'll get the odd rest but Jesus nowhere near the level of aguero.

Yep he usually plays when fit and on form. And think Jesus will play tomorrow personally.

          hmmm - yes

he's fitter and more nailed than ever

BUT - he did pick up a knock and if he starts to tonight's cardiff away is just the sort of red zone fixture he is likely to get a rest in

never for one minute suggesting selling him - season keeper for me barring injury

but won't be making him captain

Worth remembering that Jesus got injured too.

He is due a brace against Cardiff. If Hazard can score three then Aguero can definately score atleast two. My captain pick next gameweek.
