Captains

Vote in the Captain Poll for FPL Gameweek 6

Our Gameweek 6 captain poll is now open for your votes and the middling form of Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is likely to dominate thinking this week.

A home fixture against Southampton, who have conceded more big chances than all bar three teams, would have surely seen the Egyptian unanimously handed the armband last season but after two successive blanks – and another in the UEFA Champions League last night – the captaincy debate remains wide open.

Jurgen Klopp’s promised rotation also nags in the back of the mind and there remains the possibility that Salah could have his minutes managed at Anfield on Saturday or even be dropped to the bench. The Egyptian’s underlying statistics, however, continue to impress.

With four goals to his name this season, Sadio Mane (£10.0m) is a viable alternative for the armband for this fixture – but after starting all six of the Reds’ competitive matches this season, the threat of possible bench duty also hangs over the Senegalese midfielder.

We may be fretting over nothing, of course: Liverpool have a Carabao Cup third round tie against Chelsea next Wednesday, which could be the fixture in which Klopp decides to wield the rotation axe.

One Liverpool player who can be more confident of a start this weekend is Roberto Firmino (£9.4m), who has scored in each of the Reds’ last three matches in all competitions and only played 18 minutes of his side’s 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening.

The scintillating form of Eden Hazard (£10.8m) is sure to attract the Belgian midfielder plenty of votes in our poll, with Chelsea taking on West Ham United this weekend.

Maurizio Sarri’s comments about wanting Hazard to spend more time closer to goal – this after the Chelsea star scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 win over Cardiff City – are portentous and their opponents this weekend sit joint-18th for shots on goal conceded and are tied in 19th for big chances conceded.

Hazard has scored in every match in which he has started this season and delivered assists in the two fixtures in which he appeared as a substitute.

While we are still unsure as to how seriously Sarri will take the UEFA Europa League, there is a general feeling that Hazard won’t be prone to the same frustrating rotation in the league that may dog the other premium picks in this article. Sarri traditionally doesn’t chop and change his domestic starting XIs much, either.

Given that Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) is in contention to feature for Manchester City on Wednesday evening against Lyon after an ankle knock, the 50.8% of FPL managers who own the Argentinean striker will be increasingly confident that he will be fit enough to make the trip to Cardiff City in Gameweek 6.

The ideal scenario tonight for his owners would be perhaps a cameo substitute’s appearance, proving his fitness while not draining his energy reserves.

Aguero has yet to deliver an attacking return away from home this season, but will likely be presented with ample opportunities to break that duck with Neil Warnock insisting that his team won’t just sit behind the ball and defend.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic‘s (£6.8m) fine runs of form make them level-headed differential captaincy picks, though the pair are up against two defences in Wolves and Watford who sit in the top five for least amount of shots conceded this season.

Our weekly captaincy video with Joe and David is available to watch at the foot of this article or here, while you can let us know who you favour for armband duties by casting your vote in the poll below or on the sidebar.

    WC. 0.0 ITB. GTG?

    Hennessey Patricio

    Alonso TAA Doherty Bennett AWB

    Hazard Salah Richarlison Fraser Højbjerg

    Kun Mitrovic Lacazette/Ings

Laca can be downgraded to Ings if funds needed to bring back Mendy if out

I don't love you defence tbh. As I understand it Mendy is very unlikely to miss more than one and I think you'll want him a lot more than TAA in the long run.

      Otherwise solid, GTG

Triple Wolves in defence is crazy. I’d stick with Mendy in place of one of those defenders.

Each may have their merits, but that doesn’t mean you should have all of them. I have 2 in Pat and Bennett which is enough for me and Bennett likely to be benched a fair bit. I don’t like to triple up on any team that much (City exception), but especially if all in defence.

It's possible that Alonsos returns drop off and with no CS he could easily become Mendy.

The option is will Lacazette and a defensive rotation over the next 4 GWs score more than Mendy and Ings? If Mendy/Ings can't play this week then that's points lost and value sitting on my bench.

Given the (slight) uncertainty surrounding Aguero, Salah and Mane, along with Hazard's history of weaker returns on the road, are many considering an outsider for the captaincy?

I see 3% of us have voted for Mitrovic so far in the poll, and he's the only one in my team that I'm considering.

I believe the received wisdom tells us only to consider a maverick captain when there is no consensus, so with Salah only at 37% in the poll, are any of you taking the plunge?

Or are there differentials out there in whom you would trust if only you had them?

Annoyingly I usually make Maverick captaincy decision but this season I decided to play it safe.

Still can't believe I captained Aguero over Hazard. It's not even hindsight, it's just stupid.

Lol this garbage. Did you check how many goals Fulham were shipping? Do you know how many goals City scored last year? Ever think you did it because City were playing at home? Captain hindsight posts at their worst here after a haul.

If Aguero sits out tonight's game, or doesn't start at least, and then goes on to be ruled 100% for Cardiff then he'll be my captain. Failing that, it will be Aubameyang.

Zaha maybe - could really do well against Newcastle.

Tough decision this week, Salah looked shot last night, Aguero injury doubt and Haz away as you said. Could be last minute saturday morning roulette I'd say.

I’m looking at Vardy as a maverick captain! Too much considering he doesn’t really have form? Hazard is my play is safe option with worries about Aguero pitch time. But if I had Salah I would be captaining him this week.

I am undecided on my transfers currently but feel this week is a chance to make up more ground (or lose it at the case may be). If I decide to bring Lacazette in I will give him the armband against Everton at home, think that fixture is going under the radar a little and could be high scoring.

While De Bruyne is out DSilva is the man in City’s midfield. Once De Bruyen is back I think his minutes will be managed as he is getting older. BSilva seemed like a good option early but just doesn’t get the returns and seems a waste when it’s only 1mil more for D.

Need to see how rotation plays out now that the UCL is in effect - D Silva EPL game time may be constrained.

I'd rather have Maddison or Richarlison and the extra funds over B Silva.

Bit stuck this week. 1 FT, 1.5 itb. Current team

          Ryan (Button)
          ARM (AWB/Peltier)
          Pedro/Hazard/Mane/Dilva/Fraser
          Aguero/King (Ings)

          What's the best option?

          a) bank transfer and hope 2 of Aguero, Mendy and Pedro play
          b) Ings to Mitrovic and bench Pedro
          c) Upgrade Button to another 4.5 (Ryan has 2x bad fixtures and barely getting me any points)
          d) Peltier to Doherty to shore up my bench
          e) something else

          b) feels like the power move, but maybe I've missed some other option.

Downgrading one of Pedro/Robertson over next couple of weeks, so not fussed about benching headaches.

            Salah, Mané, Hazard, Aguero, Vardy?

I thought that Salah was poor last night and should have been taken off earlier, he very nearly lost Liverpool the match by giving the ball away with poor passing in midfield on at least two occasions.

Every time I have seen him this season I have thought that something is amiss, I think that Klopp should bench him for a bit and see how DS gets on with SM and RF for a game or two.

However, I very much doubt that he will do so.

                  Just pulled the WC button:

                  Begovic Hamer
                  Alonso WB Mendy Chilwell Doherty
                  Salah Hazard Rocharlison Fraser Hojbjerg
                  Aguero Zaha Mitrovic

I have the exact same back 5, and given the strength of your front 7 I don't think it's too much at all.

Alonso and Mendy are basically wingers anyway, plus AWB and Doherty are cheap as chips.

                  Salah >> Hazard (c) - GW 6
                  Westwood >> Richarlison - GW 7

Current midfield is; salah - mane - maddison - walcott - westwood

                  (have robertson too)

                  Any feedback appreciated.

Do you think Ings > Zaha is worth a hit this week? Can just about put 11 out without it with Hughes as sub, but lots of rotation/injury doubts (Kun, Mendy, Ings, Peltier, 3 Pool).

Not worth a hit, just do it next week if you really want to. Otherwise pick someone with a higher ceiling.

No. Ings potentially the best value attacker this season. You'll want him back. But perhaps if you still have your WC.

                  what to do with cash:

                  Patricio-lossl
                  Mendy-holebas-rico-pva-bennet

                  Laca-zaha-kamara

                  1ft; 4,4 itb

                  A) gtg and next gw could do a sort of miniWC
                  B) upgrade Kamara (although all my players have good schedule)

3 of the 4 games Sterling has played were LW (with Mendy). If Mendy's injured, does Sane start & is Sterling then as nailed at RW?

This is the perfect game for him to regain confidence, its simple, anything less than 10 points for me he's out, with chelsea and man city on the horizon.

Probably David Silva or sterling then use the cash to beef up the rest of my squad (already got Hazard). He needs to be returning some serious points to justify that 13m.

I agree, just that it's about more than the money. I don't want Mane either if they'll keep playing like that.
Silva seems good bet right now, maybe Sane if Mendy's properly injured.

                                  One would think so.

For example if Willian and HO start on Thurs, I'll keep Pedro in my team. If Pedro starts and doesn't come off within an hour, I'll get Richarlison or Fraser

I'm not buying that Spurs are tired or suffering from so many players playing at the World Cup. There players racked up the most minutes during Euro 2016 and the following season they had there best ever PL season, finishing 2nd in the league with their highest ever points total and 8 points ahead of City. Harry Kane finished top goalscorer that season as well.

Simply out of form and struggling due to the fact they didn't strengthen during the summer.

Well the Euro 16 issue may just be a contributing factor to current fatigue.

If the majority of the squad (which is not the deepest) has played long seasons for the past few years with PL and the three cup competitions, and only had one significant summer off in that period, you can imagine there may be issues as a very young squad matures.

That said, I think it's mostly due to a lack of momentum and focus. Not recruiting was a mistake, they seem unsure of how to take the next step. Form and confidence definitely at a low ebb

I agree with what you say. Also they are far too reliant on Kane. We can agree (as in this case) or disagree about squad fatigue all we like but Kane for me is knackered. It shows in his stats, heat map, shots, chances created all our negative since he came back from injury too soon last season. Bad man management and squad building. Shame because even as a West Ham fan I can appreaciate the Tottenham project. They've become a top 4 team in a more discreet, less cash injected way than the other 4 or 5 teams.

Yep, he looks burnt out. Huge mistake not strengthening their squad, especially a striker to take some of the burden off Kane.

I think Poch's tactics are contributing- I mean in the league he's essentially playing #10 (if not deeper) and trying to feed Moura- that's not going to be good for his goal tally.

Agree with what you say but would add one more point: TOT have introduced a new system this season and the team as a whole iseems to be struggling to adapt.

The problem is the midfield. Dier has been dire this season and Dembele is showing his age. Wanyama and Winks are still not up to speed following their injuries. Poch's tactics have been poor as well.

I'd like to see Amos given a chance in midfield. He was great in pre-season and is a real high energy destroyer.

Yeah that was my first thought. Depending on what happens in City's match tonight I might do it. Bilva has been looking very good though even if he hasn't returned. I'm just not sure if the sideways move is worth a transfer as the extra 1.0M gives me a lot of flexibility for future transfers.

Also he gets rested more often away than home. In fact he hardly ever gets rested at home (started 17 of the last 18 I believe) but it's a more of a mixed bag away. I own Aguero but I'll be captaining Salah.

There was a bit on this on the Who Got The Assist podcast earlier this season where someone had bothered to check when he was fit and when he wasn't against being rested. He's more likely to be rested even when fit when playing away. He still starts more often than not. Sorry don't have a link to the data though but I made a mental note of the conclusions. I'll be starting him for sure this week and I kind of expect him to start but I just won't be captaining him.

                                      1. Ha.

                                        I use transfermarkt for stats

                                        https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sergio-aguero/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/26399/saison/2017/verein/281/liga/0/wettbewerb/GB1/pos/0/trainer_id/0/plus/1

Last season he wasn't rested around CL, and bench appearances were generally due to injury.

Looks like he just played alternating weeks immediately following his rib injury.

That's just happenstance. Has no logic. No manager would intentionally only rest a player away from home

Good chance this week though, but not because it's home or away

Could be tactical, a manager may switch up formation, strategy and therefore lineup for slightly tougher away games no?

Yeah could be. Clearly Brighton don't play Gross away as much as home, for instance.

Think it's mainly based on opposition. He changed formation for Huddersfield and explained that it was because they sat deep and frustrated them to a draw earlier this year. Cardiff away or home is easy for City, it's hardly a tougher fixture, and Warnock hasn't parked the bus

Ha, yeah possibly happenstance. I share the data you can choose to do with it what you wish.

Agree though good chance this week because of CL and the minor ankle injury irrespective of home or away.

So got 89 points and currently my XI for this gw looks like:
                                Pickford
                                TAA, Mendy, AWB, Alonso
                                Salah, Haz, Lucas, Fraser
                                Aguero, Zaha
                                Speroni, Jimenez, Kabasele, Odoi
                                0.7 ITB and 2 FT.

Obvs wait for news on Aguero and Mendy but i reckon they'll be okay. Do i just get rid of Pickford and save 2nd ft? Cheers

Yeah team looks solid apart from Pickford. Save 2nd FT
