Watchlist Update – All change for premium defenders as Newcastle creep into consideration

We have revised our Watchlist player rankings for goalkeepers and defenders following Gameweek 6.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on a desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet. It acts as a collection of our current thoughts on player selection for each position, also citing the factors that affect their ranking on the list.

As a general rule, we try to commit to just one player per position per club. However, in some cases we where we believe double-coverage is advisable, two players will be listed instead.

Goalkeepers

Ederson (£5.6m) remains top of the Watchlist after securing his third clean sheet and a fourth return of the campaign in Gameweek 6. However, the Manchester City man loses his Favourable Fixtures factor with two particularly tough matches in their next four. Home matches against Brighton and Burnley sit alongside trips to Liverpool and Tottenham.

Alisson (£5.6m) also retains his place in the Watchlist based on his impressive form. The Liverpool man has kept a clean sheet in all but two matches so far this season. Neither of the fixtures factors applies to Alisson though with two favourable matches against Huddersfield and Cardiff coming after Chelsea and Man City.

Rui Patrício (£4.5m) and David de Gea (£5.9m) are two more non-movers on the Watchlist with no change in their respective form or quality of fixtures.

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Petr Cech (£5.0m) appear next to reflect their continued good fixtures. Neither side has been particularly adept at keeping clean sheets in 2018/19, but they still have the potential. Schmeichel sits a little higher for an increased certainty of a start.

Joe Hart (£4.5m) is the first of two new inclusions in the Goalkeeper section of the Watchlist. His clean sheet against Bournemouth was his second of the season as the Clarets work towards improving on a poor start. Neither fixtures factor applies to him with Cardiff and Huddersfield up next but Man City and Chelsea after that.

Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) drops a little bit despite recording a third clean sheet of the season in Gameweek 6. Just below him is our second new entry Martin Dubravka (£5.0m). Newcastle’s fixtures are on the turn now and apart from a trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 8, have several with clean sheet potential between now and Gameweek 19.

The popularity of Marcos Alonso (£6.9m) has pushed Kepa (£5.5m) off the Watchlist. The left-back is heavily owned for his offensive potential, and the current state of Chelsea’s fixtures do not encourage double-coverage of their defence.

Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) also dropped off after yet another match in which Bournemouth conceded more goals than their underlying numbers suggested they should have done.

Defenders

Alonso remains the top pick in defence. The Chelsea man has returned points in all but one match thus far in 2018/19, with three clean sheets, a goal and five assists to his name.

Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) has received a boost after registering his second assist of the season in Gameweek 6. He rises up the ranks as a result of other premium options facing injury and/or tough fixtures. Conversely, Spurs rank second for defence on our Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks, and Trippier has a role in set pieces.

Andrew Robertson (£6.2m) just about holds onto his place but Trent Alexander-Arnold has run him close. The Scottish left-back has shown more consistent attacking returns over the course of the season so far, and we believe he is more likely to continue that during tough fixtures. Robertson is also more adept at picking up bonus points with Alexander-Arnold already earning three yellow cards this season.

Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) takes Benjamin Mendy’s place on the Watchlist with a fair bit of uncertainty over the wing-back’s fitness. There is no return date on him currently and until we know more, we have to take him off. Laporte is the most reliable replacement considering he has played every minute of the league campaign so far and has some goal threat too.

Matt Doherty (£4.4m) tops off the best of the rest with Wolves’ defensive potential, appealing fixtures and his budget price. Jose Holebas (£4.9m) loses his price-related tag now that he has risen in price again but still stays in our thoughts with Watford’s relatively kind run and his role in set pieces. The Greek also receives a ‘Sus’ factor as he is one yellow card away from a one-match suspension.

Luke Shaw‘s (£5.1m) return to the Man United team keeps him in the Watchlist and he manages to lose his Rotation Risk factor. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) sits just below him. His slight increase in value has reduced his appeal a little for non-owners and only one of Crystal Palace’s next six fixtures looks like one where a clean sheet is likely for him.

DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) moves onto the defence Watchlist for the same reason as Dubravka. The American has a goal and an assist to his name so far this season and is the most assured of a start out of the budget options available at Newcastle. Jamaal Lascelles is arguably a bit too pricey while there is competition for places at left-back and centre-back between Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schär and Paul Dummett.

Ben Chilwell (£5.0m) takes the place of colleague Ricardo Pereira after the latter was dropped for Gameweek 6. Pereira was held accountable by the local press for the manner of Leicester’s heavy defeat to Bournemouth in Gameweek 5. It appears that manager Claude Puel was in agreement as he deployed Daniel Amartey in his stead against Huddersfield. Meanwhile, Chilwell held onto his place and continued to post encouraging underlying statistics.

A little bit and tbh I have a general benching headache for this week. Check it out:

          Alonso, Robbo, PVA, AWB, Doherty

    Hart Foster
    Alonso Trippier *Lowton* Tomkins Wan-Bissaka
Salah Mané *David Silva* Fraser Ward
    Aguero Zaha Wilson

    1FT £0.2

First of all, I still have my Wildcard and I plan to use it on GW10 (fixtures swing). So anyone that I bring now could just be a 3 weeks punt. That's why Spurs assets look very appealing on the paper. Thing is, I don't like Kane yet (and surely won't take Aguero out before Brighton at home) and their midfield is a mystery (four different options, rotation trouble, form is meh). Putting me off them for now. Since my OR is pretty good (15K) I don't want to take too many risks or hits either. As you can see, I pointed Lowton and David Silva as my main problems right now. With the 4-0 victory against Bournemouth, I thought Lowton will be nailed for a little while. But he played 90mins again tonight (and Burnley lost 1-2) so I reckon Bardlsey will start this week end. David Silva should see the bench once more against Brighton too, I surely don't want £8.5 sitting on my bench back-to-back Gameweeks. Any thoughts on those moves ?

    A. David Silva -> Richarlison + play Wan-Bissaka.
    B. David Silva -> Richarlison + Lowton -> Doherty (-4)
    C. David Silva -> Alli + Lowton -> Doherty (-4) (if going for a Spurs mid, which I fear)

    (bottomed)

Midfield should be Fernandinho-Gundo-Bilva again ? I know Dilva got "only" 60mins tonight but Pep will want him 100% fresh for the CL game don't he ?

So hard to second guess Pep ...

Thing is, when you own players subject to rotation, you start to become a little paranoid about them I guess lol.

Don't think he'll start three games in 7 days. And with their terrible start to their CL campaign I'm sure he'll go with the players he trusts the most away to Hoffenheim, and unfortunately for us David Silva owners I think that means he'll be rested and only used if necessary this weekend (which he shouldn't have to be)

You could be right but then why bring him off today and that classic 60 mins point that would normally indicate some game time planned in next game?

                • 7 Years
                5 years, 8 months ago

Maybe, but I'm done trying to figure out Pep personally. We have good options to replace him with, that are 100% starters. Dilva is not very popular either so it's not like you're selling Salah and it backfires big time.

Yeah, I think so too. And I own David Silva myself, however I won't sell. Instead I'll HOPE he starts, and if he doesn't start that he remains on the bench during the entire game (like last) and have decent back up on the bench

              • 6 Years

Yeah, agree completely. But I just think it's either or with him. Either he'll start, or he won't come on at all (like the last game) unless they're in trouble (which they really shouldn't be at home to brighton). Pep likes to give game time to Diaz and especially Foden.

But if it's 0-0 around the hour mark, then there's a risk of course. However, there's also a chance of him getting more than 1 point in that case..

For me, at the moment, I just can't validate the move this gw. But I wouldn't blame people who do

Is it a big risk that Dilva will be benched again after playing 60+ mins against Oxford today? Worry his minutes will be managed irrespective given a must-win CL game and Pool coming up.

Having decent attacking subs is always good. Ings or Jiménez decent options - cheap enough to be benchable, ticking over nicely so it’s possible to start them too

Not sure I agree with this logic. Yes some weeks you’d have to make a call and potentially have points on the bench but ultimately you gain flexibility to play 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 as well as 2 up front and contingency if there are surprises/ injuries

        @Parm.

Get the ball and drive forward as quickly as possible. Works for Liverpool, worked for Fergie ... and Jose has the right players to do it.
        Eveything else is over thinking.

Agreed. It’s just not in his DNA to play that way. He’d rather invite pressure. Play a low block and attempt to counter attack

Mmmm. Not really. He p!ays the way some coaches from the FA teach at junior level. What he does is bring the whole team fwd as a unit, but that requires multiple passes. It used to drive me mad when we had FA coaches at my old junior team at training. Rubbish way to play.

Yep, easy to overthink it but the intensity of this United team is miles behind anything Fergie had or Jose has had in the past, even. Amazing people are defending him when he's into his third year and nothing is showing whilst Sarri has taken 3 months to play his way at the Bridge.

Put Zidane in charge and we'll see these guys with freedom to do that, never under Jose who doesn't want to adapt regardless of what players he has.

If I dropped one though it would be Mané but it wouldn’t be to Hazard - I’d rater it’s to one of the cheaper form mids (Rich, Maddison etc) that could free up some contingency cash itb

GW7 strikes me as one of those weeks where the Scout Picks goes with opposing options. Maybe a Newcastle defender 'because they've tightened up at the back in recent weeks' but then also 'Maddison because consistency'.

Also looking forward to how they navigate Chelsea Liverpool...

                    He was rotated against Cardiff.

A strong source (Bluwhit, who knows David Silva - https://twitter.com/bluwhit / https://forums.bluemoon-mcfc.co.uk/members/bluwhit.38382/) posted the following on Bluemoon:

"Not sure who was more shocked DS wasn't in the team yesterday me who drove down to watch him play or DS himself. Been told he can't play 3 games in 7 days now."

Pep also said that he'd have to manage Silva's minutes this season due to his age, or something along those lines.

David Silva is a rotation risk.

But he was totaly rested last game, played 60mins tonight
He will start next game,be sure of that
No way he will play only 60-90 in 2 weeks, being older or not

                    A) Kepa + Aubameyang >> Hart + Kane For a hit -4
                    B) Walcott >> Richarlison OR Madisson

Please help me out with this crazy ideaBeen thinking a lot about my moves with mendy, pedro in ny team and wanted Mitrovic instead of zaha but after gw9 (arsenal) and maybe lacazette instead of auba (because he is cheaper and more involved).

My current team playing 4-3-3 last couple of weeks
                    Hennessey-Hamer
                    Alonso-Mendy-Roberstson-WB-Bennett
                    Salah-Richarlison-Pedro-Fraser-4.3
                    Auba-Aguero-zaha

I just thought of something out of nowhere
                    Mendy+Pedro+Zaha to Laporte+Ward+ lacazette

After couple of weeks auba to Mitrovic and 4.3m upgrade to upto 9m midfielder

                    Which one on WC?

                    A)
                    Ederson/Hamer
                    Alonso/Trippier/TAA/Bennett/WB

                    B)
                    4.5/4.5
                    Alonso/Trippier/TAA/Doherty/WB

                    C)
                    Patricio/Hamer
                    Alonso/Robo/Trippier/Bennett/WB

No City def is pain in B and C, can do Trip to Mendy when fit but probably would lose City def points against Burnley (H) and Brighton (H)

                    Current starting side:

                    Patricio
                    TAA Alonso AWB
                    Salah Mane Hazard Fraser
                    Mitrovic Aguero Wilson

Bench - Hamer, Doherty, Bennett, Hojberg

Worried having so many players go up against each other this week, would you start either of my Wolves benched defenders over any of the current starters?

It's annoying really but ManU managed to get the ideal result tonight. For me, the league cup is a simple task: win it or bin it. In losing this game, he's able to concentrate on the two key competitions. Depending on how those develop, he can judge what we can do in the FA cup.

Ironically, this is the best result possible for them.

I'm sure they didn't plan to lose. I'm just saying that, in saving themselves up to 6 extra games, they are left to concentrate on the games that matter. For a team playing in Europe, that's not a bad thing.

Ideal result? So its ideal that Derby played better than United at old trafford? Then Mou shouldve played with a bunch of kids.

                      WB and one other.

Az mentioned rumours of Doherty having a thigh strain or something. Anyone know anything about this? was he taken off today?

Ah, then how did he strain his thigh? Maybe there were rumours cause he didn't play.
