FPL half-term report: the 20 Premier League teams ranked by KPI data

This latest members’ article looks at the performances of the top-flight clubs this season from an underlying statistics point of view.

The aim is to pinpoint which areas all of the Premier League teams are strong in, as well as highlighting any weaknesses that the key performance indicators might betray.

Each statistic is ranked in relation to the other Premier League sides, with 1st being the best and 20th the worst. For example, Manchester City are marked as 1st for expected goals conceded (xGC) as this is the lowest figure in the whole of the division.

We have also calculated the 20 clubs’ average FPL fixture difficulties (where 2.00 is the easiest fixture and 5.00 is the toughest, according to the ratings given in the game itself) from Gameweeks 1-8 in order to give some context – and mitigation where needed – as to the rankings.

Aguero, he does well at home and I see City scoring more goals than Pool.

I WC'd to get rid of Aguero... yes. It's a big risk especially being at 20k OR

    Patricio
    Alonso, Robbo, Trippier, Laporte, Doherty
    Hazard, Salah, Maddison, Richarlison, Schurrle
    Mitrovic, Arnie, Ings

    Why?

    - Constant subs at 60th min mark despite playing the full 90 in CL
    - Even subbed vs LFC which is a hugely important game - before the int. break, so it wasn't to rest for CL
    - Gives me so much more money to invest in defence and mid
    - Tough fixtures upcoming
    - The next 2 good fixtures are BUR and SOU, both of which come right before CL football... prime opportunity to rotate/rest

The whole squad will rotate every week to give me a set of players only playing favourable fixtures. The exceptions are Salah and Hazard who play every week. There is no set formation

Thought this was worth posting as it's not the 'norm' especially before Burnley. If it works in my favour I think I'll be using the rotation tactic a lot

An interesting article if you are exploring the idea of rotation and diverting from the 'norm' expensive forwards: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/07/11/in-search-of-the-best-fantasy-football-formation/

If you kept a squad with 0 premium forwards left untouched all season - would have been 17k overall lol

Both a good players with high scoring/assisting possibilities, doesn't matter if they play for the same team

Could work out but your going to have massive benching headaches some weeks. Your bound to bench Schurrle or Ings points.

Kind of agree with you on Aguero but 60 mins play he can do some damage. With 2 weeks off could even be totally better to play longer.

    2. MTPockets
        5 years, 6 months ago

deja vu. If you're posting it again for actual feedback as a question -

        - Currently resting for 2 weeks as not in Argentina squad
        - Played 90 in CL so not beyond means
        - Jesus subbed on but wasn't even trusted with a penalty by Pep
        - The Stats in this article don't suggest particularly tough fixtures, but do suggest MCI investment

I've been doing a similar rotation thing with fwds/mids, but it hasn't really worked. Only takes one injury/benching to stuff a plan, and just been lucky with subs. To then add defence into that mix is almost certainly wasting on-the-pitch funds.

I've used it and got to 20k pretty easily so far... so yeah

          - Even worse if he is resting for 2 weeks - looks like a tactical sub vs liverpool... a 11m players tactically subbed in a big game? No thanks
          - Pep didn't decide the pen... it was the players on the pitch. Stones said Mahrez was doing well in training so he took it

Pep said otherwise in press conference, but if you're happy with it that's all that matters.

Very interesting approach. I'm gonna be pessimistic and say it wont work. Happy to be proven wrong though.

My "problem" with your approach is not Aguero, or any single player. Its a) nailing the rotation, and b) getting an expensive player you fancy at a later stage.

Every single pick in your squad looks good in isolation, but as a squad it just doesnt tempt me. The minimum amount of "funds" youll be able to bench each week will be 3m. Then theres the weeks were youll put more expensive selections on the bench, prob getting closer to 5m. That just seems like a misuse of funds, because your relying on the fact that your superb rotation skills are gonna outweigh the difference of other players who are pumping their money in to their XI.

I'm not saying what your aiming to do is impossible, im just trying to highlight two points as to why I believe you dont see managers with great trackrecords opting for that tactic.

Rotation isn't really that complex. Does that player play against a top 4/6 team? Yes? Bench him for someone who isn't. If it doesn't work out... then it doesn't matter - I did all I could and played the way that is more probable to get me points. Mitro away to Cardiff is more probable to return than Maddison away to Arsenal.

I've used this rotation this season and it's been pretty straight forward. I've had pts on the bench, sure. Mendy vs Arsenal, Fabi vs Chelsea and Robbo vs Man City - but most of the time it works and the players in the starting XI return well

            Rotation isn't rocket science

              ID?

You should be vary of claiming success for "your way" of playing based on being 20k 8 gameweeks in to the season. If you believe its that easy to get better returns from cheap players when their fixtures are favourable, how do you think its like for premiums when they get a strong of favourable fixtures.

I'm all about getting value for money, and have probably annoyed some of the more conservative players on the site with my opinions. But spreading the funds to make a "rotation-machine" seems like overcomplicating the game. Its possible to invest in a couple of pricey players and a couple of cheaper players who all have good fixtures, maybe having 2-3 rotating to fill the 10th and 11th slot in your squad. Then constantly adressing the needs of your squad with injuries, bookings, loss of form and fixturechanges, just to keep ticking along.

                Nah you're alright mate

What do you want me to do? Go in a hole and come out in 10 years when I have tried the tactic to show that it works?

You're missing the points and think I'm against premium players. I have Haz and Salah.

Rotation is just a different way to play the game, and if you're not used to it, it might seem complex. But it's not

probably sounds like Im just trying to poke holes, but all Im really trying to do is add my opinion. How are you looking to rotate? Whats your bench gonna look like for the next 5 weeks?

Rotation can work. I have Pereira as a 4th defender and have started him the last couple of weeks while benching TAA.

I also have Ings who's sat on my bench while I've played Maddison and Richarlison. I don't think I've had a blank from Ings when I've started him actually!

Having a favourable option from the bench stops you losing patience with players. There's people selling Robertson and Fraser already. I'm not sure they'd be doing that if they could bench him from time to time.

At the scale your working with? For sure. But you have a massively different build than PVA, and for the most gameweeks you'll only bench 2 mill more than needed with your current build. Most players in the game are easily attainable within two moves. As wil not be the case with PVA's team.

Almost all your picks are fairly template, so I wouldnt argue this to be the case.
Also, if its having a "template" formation/setup I can assume you that I'm not very picky about playing this way or the other. I just believe that the added benefit of rotating in your fashion, wil be negated by the fact that your not putting enough money on the pitch 🙂

Don't worry about the negativity, it's an approach worth going for. There's no set way to play this game.

I've been going with only 2 premium attackers all season (most have 3) and my OR is 304. I do have benching headaches every week, but I enjoy the challenge and mostly get them right. The great part about planned rotation is that when a player has a yellow flag or might get rested/rotated, you're not too worried and you're not forced into hits. You look and see a few decent options on your bench and you almost want them to get a chance. Plus almost every week you see at least one of your 'Best XI' has a tough fixture (ether for CS potential or attacking returns) and it makes your decision for you.

As an example, I benched Alonso in GW7 and played Doherty and PVA. People said it was mad. 22 points between them while Alonso and his 2 points sat on the bench. It's a fun way to play, but there will be some lows to match the highs.

Exactly, nice one mate. Great score and hopefully you can get higher and maintain it

I agree, there will be highs and lows. It's all about probability and the probability of PvA and Doherty returning was greater than Alonso in GW7

I'm 100% going with this tactic as I've used it all season so far and it's done well. It's just now I'm taking out Aguero (which nobody seems to care about lol) and investing funds everywhere else

Been rotating since GW1. The thing is you don't always have control anyway e.g. I've had Sanchez, Dilva and Pedro not even show up, but then the strong bench covers it (rather than some complete fodder I usually have someone like Maddison, Alonso, Wilson, whoever happens to have the worst fixture but is still a good option).

You have so much flexibility to get the low to mid priced players in great fixtures because you've spread the funds. In any given week I could easily move one of my many 7.4m (Ramsey) or below to a player with a great fixture e.g. a Fulham attacker this week vs Cardiff. I don't have any 4.5 mids clogging up space that are tricky to upgrade. Of course the downside is I am one heavy hitter short all the time, but I see it as a challenge not a problem.

Re: the heavy hitter thing... surely the favourable fixtures in your starting XI makes up for the 1 less heavy hitter. Maybe even betters it

There is only 1 way to find out if this works - and that's to try it... I found the cajones to try it in a way that is very extreme

                  We'll see 🙂

Benching alonso in 7 was the right move when you had those two options, but surely your great rank cant be accredited to great rotation? Your initial selection was mint, your wc was great and your other transfers have been great. The rotation? Has prob been 50/50 wouldnt you say?

All fair points. No, I'm not saying rotation is why I'm having a great season. But I think it has played an important passive role as much as a tangible one, in that having depth has positively influenced my moves each week. I haven't panicked and taken weird hits, I haven't made many transfers until close to deadline with all the information available (this has worked a treat a few times as I've changed my plans for the better). And part of that approach is about not seeing the worst bench ever and getting itchy fingers. Dilva might not start? Fine, I don't need to take a hit to get rid. Pedro injured? Annoying, but I can make an aggressive move elsewhere this week so he can sit on the bench while I do that instead. That kinda stuff.

But yes absolutely there have been a number of factors (both luck and skill I would say).

Definately both luck and skill, but most skill by the looks of it. Think you've played the game wonderfully sofar. But its not about rotation. The way you've played the game doesnt set you apart from how "veterans" play the game. Strength in depth is allways key. Heading a healthy bench ready to compete is a big part of the game.

But what PVA.is suggesting is actually vastly different from your approach by the looks of it. You benched pedro last week because he isnt a regular, and have prob identified him as a player worth switching. Your not planning on Benching 6-7m players week in week out. That will only happen youve got awful scenarios like Lonzo gw7.

It's true, I am looking to get rid of Pedro for obvious reasons. But I'm not going to downgrade him to a Hojbjerg to free up funds, I'm just going to keep going with 8 strong attackers and one of them sitting on the bench every week. Even defence rotation will be harder soon because PVA has to go (for Mendy) and I don't really ever want to bench Doherty. But I'll deal with that headache each week, and in fact I probably won't have to very often because rotation and injuries are inevitable especially between now and New Year.

I get what you're saying. It's not really about heavy rotation for me. Perhaps "flexibility" is what I like, and what's working.

Yeah. Your not looking to Get security of 2-pointers from your bench, but you also dont want to pay more than needed for a player whos going to spend most of his time on the bench. It's all basic. Im probably coming across as a preachy douche without getting my points properly presented in this thread. But thats on me.

Not at all, it makes sense. To be fair I'd probably have been rotating heavier if Pedro hadn't immediately become a no-go for me, but overall you're not wrong. I don't want millions sitting on my bench, but I'm okay with a more expensive bench than others and yep, I don't care at all for the security of a Stephens 2-pointer.

Good example is GW6. Both Dilva and Pedro played 0 minutes. That would cripple some teams - it's two non-budget mids not even turning up. You carry a weak bench and it's a nightmare. But I got 72 points and a green arrow. The final XI still looked strong.

Rotation is important and people underestimate the importance of a squad.

My rotation pairing at the beginning of the season was Fraser/AWB. Theyvwere competing for the first spot on my bench. They were 1m above the bottom price and had great rotation potential. Fraser kicked on and has been more than a sub for me.

So quality on the bench is key. Having at least 2 decent subs is important. But minimising cost on the bench is also key. Fraser/AWB were budget price. Schurle/Laporte are not. Fraser/AWB rotated perfectly and always had a great fixture.

I think your base idea is correct but your are wrong to spread the funds too thickly.

Completely with you on this tactic also matey.

Started off with strong 11/12 players before WC in 4th week to boost it to a strong 15. As long as you monitor performances and are willing to play the probability of points scoring by eliminating risky picks like playing vs big teams, I've had far better results than last season.

Sitting at 1995 OR, yes i've left probably 30+ points on the bench, but rarely do i have more than 3 players blanking, and that'll be in-form players vs poorer teams where they are expected to get points, so just unlucky.

I prefer rotation all the way and it's definitely more fun than just lumping in the expensive players with a lesser regard for value for money.

Good luck and stick to your guns!

Kind of agree with you, i have always like having bench that could rotate but not sure it´s the best tactic if you aim to get very high in the ranks. What it does is actually forcing you to know a lot about football, because you have to choose who you start week in and week out which means you must have some skills in doing it. If you allow me; the example you use is actully a good one except i´m not entirely sure if you analyze those games you mention it would end up with more points for Mitro than maddison. My point is that you have to imply or count in judgement on how the games will turn out to be, in this case Maddison takes set pieces which Arsenal are bad at defending. Also Leicester good in counterattacks, Arsenal are bad defending them. Cardiff will stiffle Fulham attack and they will double up on Mitro, will Fulham get enough space?

Any comments about my wildcard team?

        Rui Patricio

        Doherty - Alonso - Robertson - Mendy

        Hazard - Salah - Richarlison - Fraser

        Aguero - Wilson

Bench: Button - Jimenez - AWB - Masuaku

Plan is to do Wilson to Arnie after next two BOU fixtures.

Yeah, currently on Aguero for me too, but he's so annoying with his 60 minutes limit. Don't have Salah though, and I actually think he's the best captain option next week.

Why? The worst time to gamble is when the most owned player has the “kindest” fixture. And the other highly owned players have tough ones.

If the captaincy is split between Kun, Salah, Haz or Kane, then you aren’t actually risking that much.

If you focus on EOs etc.

No they won't Cardiff will be aware of Fulham's attacking threat so they'll make sure they keep it tight and try to hit on the counter, wouldn't be surprised if Cardiff won 1-0. But

But if both teams have a go and play an open game then there is only one winner really. I doubt though Cardiff would be naive enough to play an open game

Cardiff - Fulham results last season 2-2 and 2-4. It's not like Cardiff is a impenetrable defence either.

Cardiff had a fairly good attack for the championship. Have they got an attack to be competitive in the premier league? I don't think so, so their best chance is to be tight at the back and try to nick some goals

No they didn't have a good Championship attack. Wolves and Fulham scored 10 & 13 goals more than them . They went up because their defence was the joint meanest with Wolves.

I think that Cardiff will win and Fulham will get 1 goal at most. Warnock tactics to make the game as scrappy as possible and nick a goal or 2.

You could be right. But on the other hand, I think those types of teams suit Fulham well, because they can play their possession football. We could see that when they played Burnley couple of gameweeks ago when they dismantled them 4-2. Fulham have problems with teams that press.

I sold King for Wilson on my WC in GW5 if that helps. They've sort of matched each other since then but Wilson carries way more threat. King loves a peno and baps but Bournemouth have had 5 pens in 8 matches which is surely unsustainable

If I've ever wanted a player to punish sellers, it's Mitro. Imagine selling before Cardiff, Bournemouth & Huddersfield. If I did that, I'd delete my account and install Minecraft.

Too much stock is put into the idea of 'price'

'Because X player is more expensive they should play over a cheaper player'

Don't think you get points for being expensive, but I might be wrong

              1. MTPockets
                  5 years, 6 months ago

'Value'. Price is what it is. Trades/transfers are an agreement on price, disagreement on value.

I think the value element is key. For instance, I don't think there's a better players than TAA at 5m or Ings/Jimenez at 5.5m. Mitrovic/Richarlison at 6.5m, DSilva at 8.5m, Hazard at 10.5m, etc.

We should question a players price and value regardless of position.
