Meet the Manager #5 – Matthew Jones (aka Numb)

In what proved to be a perfectly timed Meet the Manager interview, we caught up with Matthew Jones (known as Numb round these parts) just days after he reached the summit of our Live Hall of Fame for the first time.

In this series, we meet a manager with an exceptional track record in their Fantasy Premier League and find out their strategies for success as well as gathering some top tips for the current campaign.

With seven top 10,000 finishes, including three in the top 500, across his previous nine seasons, Matthew has indeed had an exceptional career.

In fact, his lowest ever finish is still a highly respectable 15,353 and with a rank just outside the top 20k this time around he looks on course for another memorable season.

During the interview, he reveals how patience has proved a virtue, including during this campaign with the bulk of his Gameweek 1 team still in place as he prioritises avoiding hits and swerving short-term bandwagons.

Matthew (FPL team link here) also explains how his rigid, four-stage preparation each week has been key to his success. This strategy also helped him pull off perhaps his greatest achievement, leaping from 2,993,511 in the overall rankings in Gameweek 5 last season to the edge of the top 10,000 by the close of the campaign.

The chat with Matthew is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

I've got exact funds for Son & Smalling > Salah & VVD for a -4.

Would you say it's worth taking a -8 to get Robertson instead of VVD?

Nope. VVD has a pretty strong goal threat and is nailed as nailed can be. It was a coin flip between them at the start of the season and I think with the price changes it's still a coin flip. Not worth the -4

VVD's goal threat is a bit of a unicorn.
Bought him last year when he joined Liverpool and was waiting for a goal until end of seaso, whilst people who went Robertson were getting points.

This year I have no doubt that Robbo is the go to premium Pool option.

Probability wise no. But if you are going to buy VdV you have to be committed to that being your best option. If you are unsure then look at other MFs. Sterling is ticking along so nicely that he offers an alternative to Salah who has form and minutes

I have Sterling in my plans for GW11 onwards. Just need to hide behind the sofa with no City assets for a couple games.

Is it worth doing this wildcard. I'm fairly happy with my team but I desperately need Hazard and I can't find an easier way to fit him in even though I have 2FT saved.
    Current team...
    Patricio Fabianksi
    Walker Robertson Trippier Alonso WBA
    Salah Maddison Richarlison Fraser Neves
    Zaha Aguero Arnautovic

    WC team...
    Patricio Fabianski
    Laporte Robertson Trippier Bennett WBA
    Hazard Salah Fraser Maddison Hojberg
    Aranutovic Aguero Jiminez

Trippier Rich, Zaha > Haz, Bennett, 4.5?
You'll be playing 442 anyway as long as Fraser is fit?

      1. ZACTAY
        • 7 Years
        5 years, 6 months ago

That would leave me 4.4m for a striker but I'd have Neves and WBA/Bennett ahead of him on the bench so could work out nicely until I decide to WC. Thanks .

          • 13 Years
          5 years, 6 months ago

Yep. Could go Kamara, Then downgrade Walker/Neves next week. You can get close to that WC team pretty easily that way and you're safe if there is a week with multiple big name injuries.

With 2 ft i think not.

      Trippier to Schindler
      Walker/Alonso to Doherty/Bennett

      And then Maddison/Fraser to Hazard...

It`s quite possible that Sturridge will start instead of Firmino against Huddersfield isn`t it?

I don’t think we can predict these type of scenarios, Sturbridge I mean not Hazard. So we shouldn’t be trying to jump to conclusions we can never prove, as it’s pointless.

Who would you pick out of the following for a rotating 3rd defender?

    A) Jonny (already have Patricio)

    B) Duffy

    Backline would be Alonso/Robertson/Holebas/AWB + ?

Letting go of Trippier to fund Dilva > Salah

For what it's worth, I still see potential in Holebas which is why I'm holding.

Not ridiculous , he is only 4.3m I think so can easily be benched and he does get the odd goal. West Ham are getting better as well.

Balbuena looks more nailed @ 4.4 and a headed goal seems imminent...

    I’m on WC, and have:

    Ryan, Fab
    Alonso, Robbo, Doherty, (Bennett, AWB)
    Salah, Haz, Rich, Fraser, (Hojbjerg)
    Aguero, Mitro, Murray

Pondering ditching Murray for a non-playing 4.5 (Success?) and shifting Bennett to Mendy (have 0.1 ITB).

Seems an obvious move, though Mendy more template and Murray more of a differential. Question is, is there another option?

      AWB to Mendy?

I’ve got 4.1 invested in each. I like the option to double up on Wolves given Palace’s run in the next few weeks, but then if I wanted AWB back to give me flexibility, he’s 4.3. Good food for thought though!

Looks pretty template stuff, not that it's bad.

I'd always rather have 2 playing players than 1. The team has to see you through Xmas rotation.

Doherty, Salah, Murray. Think I'd rather have Mendy, Mané, Arnautovic / Vardy.

Now there’s a thought! I keep thinking Salah will come good, but he’s testing my patience.

In that case, I could ship out Bennet for Mendy...

I like a cheap bench myself but yeah having Doherty as a solid first sub seems more than okay.

Yeah I like those moves. You need to answer the question whether Mendy will outscore Murray. In my opinion yes.

I think Chelsea will whoop United. Decent chance of a big score for Alonso.

I benched Maddison, can't see him doing much away at Arsenal. Both West Ham and Man Utd will probably score so it's who you think more likely to get attacking returns, Alonso just edges it for me.

The guy has far more patience than I could ever have. His approach is so so dull. Don't think he will ever win it, because of that.

I don't think it's dull myself, it's very efficient and likely optimal to achieve repeat success over many seasons. Aggressive players can finish high too of course but I'd be kinda surprised if an aggressive manager had a history like that. Remarkable results. Fair play eh?
