Captains

Captain Sensible – Richarlison tops poll in complicated Gameweek 13 debate

Gameweek 13 of Fantasy Premier League could prove the most difficult for the captaincy this season.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool are on the road this weekend which robs us of the opportunity to back a Salah or Aguero home captaincy.

Meanwhile, Chelsea travel to Spurs leaving the door open for a differential to prove the most popular. But is he the right option to go with?…

Captain Poll

Gameweek 13 sees a surprise leader emerge at the top of the poll in Everton’s Richarlison (£7.0m). No player has garnered more than the Brazilian’s 33.47% backing in the vote so far and when we dig a little deeper, it’s easy to see why. The makeshift centre-forward has three goals and one assist since Gameweek 8, recording an average of 6.6 points per match in his last five league outings. This weekend he goes up against a Cardiff City side conceding 2.2 goals per away match this season.

Below Richarlison is a selection of captaincy household names that have not quite earned the usual support from their owners. Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.5m) have rotated home fixtures quite nicely so far this season but both of them are away this weekend. For that reason, just 22.53% of our voters think Salah is worth captaining at Watford with even fewer (16.89%) supporting Aguero at West Ham.

The last time the pair were ruled out of the captaincy (when they faced each other in Gameweek 8) we were fortunate enough to see Eden Hazard (£11.3m) present a favourable trip to Southampton. This week Chelsea are away at Tottenham, pulling the Belgian out of widespread consideration. Accordingly, he looks set for a 10th-place finish in the captain poll with just 1.59% of the votes.

Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) heads up the best of the rest outside of the this week’s top three with 4.73% backing, after two goals and three assists in the last three Gameweeks.

He is followed by Anthony Martial (£7.6m), whose six goals in five matches has convinced 3.93% of you that he is the optimum captain for Gameweek 13 when Manchester United host Crystal Palace.

After that, it’s Salah’s Liverpool colleague Sadio Mané (£9.9m) with a 1.94% share.

Matt Doherty‘s (£4.9m) potential for big returns against Huddersfield has convinced 1.68% of our voters to back him for the armband, no defender has more backing for Gameweek 13.

Despite boasting more encouraging underlying statistics than team-mate Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) sits way down in ninth on the captain poll. That is almost certainly as a result of his current fitness issues, although his price does mean that his ownership is 20.6% lower than his Brazilian colleague.

feels like every team has Mane and no Salah on these boards.

am I the last one hanging onto this player and his 13.0? are Mane owners not concerned with Mane's lack of returns and lackluster Liverpool coverage?

      Salah here.

Rather have a 13m risk than a player who bursts into tears after a dodgy performance.

Mane points come in bursts, patience required.

He is still getting over taking a load of Liverpool shirts over to his Senegal village and seeing SALAH printed on the back of them all.

      I still have Salah.

Tempted to ditch one of him or Haz on WC though, to free up cash for an Arsenal striker when their fixtures get tasty.

Much rather have Salah, when you add up their respective scores in captaincy games it looks much better for Mo.

Ederson has more assists than Mane

Liverpool "Captainable fixtures" comparison - Salah v Mane:

        (GW1 WHU, GW3 BHA, GW6 SOU, GW9 HUD, GW10 CAR, GW12 FUL)

        Mane: 15, 3, 3, 0, 15, 3 = 39
        Salah: 8, 8, 8, 8, 15, 8 = 55

32 points difference between the two on captaincy so far....

      Same dilemma.
Very tempted to get Vinagre, seemingly no other options for the wing back role, Jonny confirmed out until the new year it seems.

When Jonny was subbed off at half time in the home loss against Watford, Vinagre came on for him.
I'm having a punt on Vinagre starting as a wing back.

          Thanks for this.
Looking at the squad on fpl, there is seemingly no alternative other than a formation switch which seems unlikely.
          Vinagre punt it is.

With Man Utd's easy fixtures, there is a lot of love for Martial... Just thinking if Lukaku is worth a punt for 1-2 weeks? Could be a great differential... Thoughts?

I might be too "biased" since I'm a Man U fan... But just think they may see the next few fixtures as an opportunity to get near that top 4 places, something that Mou also said today. Maybe overthinking...

I think if Kaku is fit, he starts. And Rashford hasn't really lit the screen with his performances. So I'm pretty certain that Kaku starts this week plus with Pog back, Kaku could find some form...

He was dropped before without being injured.
I wouldn't be taking a 1-2 week punt on a player who has been dropped, and not got his place back yet.
Mou confirmed Martial is playing (assume starting) so it's a 50-50 between Lukaku and Rashford. Why take the risk?

...but of course good luck with whatever you do.

No doubt it is a risk but with some of players out or almost like Vardy and Ings, I'm just thinking of getting someone who can be a differnential... May completely back fire

              I know you're a fan, so this won't go down well but if I was picking a two weeks punt;

Zaha - vs United, vs Burnley.

The two worst defences outside the bottom 3 (I think)

Already lost 0.1 on Mendy, if he isn't dropping anymore tonight then I'd roll over FT and do next week. Play Bennett in place this week...

Sorry, forgot to say I already had Bennett on my pitch with Alonso benched, for some reason. You think Mane, Brooks etc are all alright to keep for now?

Sell Mendy as you’re team is too weak to have him sat in your team.

Not sure if AWB is fit. I’m not happy with Klopp comments on Robbo.
Mendy has to go or you risk having just 10 players.
But no it’s not that weak actually.

    Bench one:

    A) Fraser
    B) Shaqiri
    C) Ings
    D) Arnautovic

Shaq and Ings concern me for potential for minutes from the bench, otherwise I would start those two, no question

Exactly - in a normal team, I would lock him in to start as he will either start v an awful team, or he won't get a minute and Arnie comes in anyway. But the talk of him being available as an option off the bench has me concerned...

That's my biggest concern too... Don't want him to come on for a 1 pointer and that's why I would have him benched or better transfer out coz the upcoming fixtures aren't that great anyways

He can sit on my bench for their tougher fixtures. Not worth a change imo (want Anderson for Shaqiri next week and then Kane back the following week); happy for him to sit on the bench for a few weeks until Fulham's fixtures turn and I can get Mitro

Don't see him starting either, too big of a game midweek, too full games on Int and a very busy xmas schedule coming up!

Yeah he’s 80% not starting for me. Cant be sure but unlikely he starts.

      Starting to be very annoying.
Success (LIV) or Hojbjerg (ful) coming from my bench. And Im already playing Fabianski and Arnie vs City.

It's risky for sure, but could pay off.

5.4, 1.7% ownership, should start with KDB and B Silva out.

2 goals, 2 assists and 5 bonus points already this season from just 4 starts and 3 cameos off the bench, plus some solid underlying numbers.
