Richarlison on the wing as Maddison benched for Leicester

Richarlison (£7.0m) has been deployed on the left-wing for Everton as they host Leicester City in the opening Premier League fixture of 2019.

That has allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m) to come back into the side to operate as the centre-forward, Bernard (£5.9m) dropping to the bench.

Also named among the substitutes is Seamus Coleman (£5.2m), as Jonjoe Kenny (£4.2m) returns for his first start since Everton’s last meeting with Leicester on October 6.

After being benched for the Gameweek 20 trip to Brighton, Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) comes back in to skipper the Toffees, who line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Brazilian international Richarlison may enjoy his outing at Goodison Park today as he goes up against Danny Simpson (£4.2m), who has been deployed at right-back for the first time since Gameweek 15 today. The former title-winner is making just his third league start of the campaign.

Meanwhile, James Maddison (£6.8m) finds himself on the Leicester bench, while Hamza Choudhury (£4.3m) makes his third start in four matches. The 21-year-old was excellent in recent wins over Chelsea and Manchester City but was rested for the Gameweek 20 defeat to Cardiff.

Wes Morgan (£4.5m) fails to recover from illness which sees Jonny Evans (£4.8m) come in, while Rachid Ghezzal (£5.1m) gets back into the Leicester starting line-up since Gameweek 12.

Everton XI: Pickford; Digne, Zouma, Keane, Kenny; Gomes, Gueye; Richarlison, Sigurdsson, Walcott; Calvert-Lewin.

Leicester XI: Schmeichel; Chilwell, Maguire, Evans, Simpson; Ndidi, Mendy, Choudhury; Ghezzal, Vardy, R Pereira.

Should've known Richy would struggle. Leicester plays 3 DMs ffs, bullying that Everton midfield.

Feels really good as a Vardy owner. There was a circle jerk of a few posters saying he was a horrible pick last week. Hopefully they have Everton defence 🙂

You're a stubborn fella aren't you. 🙂 Still banging the Alonso drum? (797 minutes without any attacking returns) It's ok to admit you're wrong sometimes.

Salty realising how bad a pick he is possibly? What a waste of money - oh well suppose getting 6.5 level returns for a 9.0 is better than 2 points

Had him earlier in the season for a few games and he did well then after the helicopter crash I sold him and he hasn't shown any form since until now. I think he can be a good pick if he starts showing form again.

Digne probably still an excellent FPL pick for the foreseeable, although CS’s will probably be scarce, he should tick over with A’s & the odd G. Very kind price tag

Not really. He hasn't got any attacking returns in about 8-10 games and all the other cheaper defenders in the Chelsea backline get the same CS points as him

It’s really not - 8 games doesn’t make Luiz a better FPL player than Alonso - form is temporary class is permanent, not the other way around.

Kante has outscored Sterling over the last 6 weeks by 10 points. Does this make Kante a better FPL player?

Alonso’s record and his points speaks for themselves.

Wolves...kept 1 CS since GW8 (reason I ditched Patricio). Everton have kept 3 in that time.

Doesn't make much difference if Wolves defend well and concede 1 goal per game, whereas Everton are a bit worse and concede 2 per game.

End result is still no clean sheet.

It makes every difference. Because we are looking at the likelihood of future CSs rather than counting up points that have already been scored.

Wolves' defensive numbers are way better than Everton's and they have had much harder fixtures recently. They are a much more solid bet for CSs going forward, simple as that.

...and the way you predict future CS is looking a the recent past defensive performances.

All of Wolves defensive heroics came at the start of the season...last 10 GWs, they've been gash.

Everton and Wolves have both faced 4-5 top teams over that period, so the fixtures are much of a muchness.

Other than the 6-2 demolition by Spurs, Everton's defence hasn't been heavily beaten.

So again, Wolves defence...not amazingly better than Everton's (if at all)

Defenders need CSs. They don't tick over with attacking points, not ever.

Digne doesn't score 2 goals with an xG of 0.09 this season again. It's gone now.

        • 7 Years

This. CSs are the bread and butter of defenders and then you want ones who can get potential attacking returns too a la Mendy, Doherty and Robertson.

Everton have a better squad then Watford, Leicester, Bournemouth and West Ham. He is underperforming because he can't keep clean sheets.

            Pickford

Depends on if you rate players by reputation or current performances. What quality defenders has he? Pickford making mistakes. Coleman never back to his pre-injury level. Mina could be decent, not enough PL games yet. Zouma is good. Keane, less good. Gueye covering too much for them. Gomes is quality. I'm a big fan of Davies but prob seeing something that's not there. Bar Sigurdsson he has no real attacking threat. Richarlison still too inconsistent. Walcott was never consistent enough for anyone to justify hus reputation. Don't know a lot about Bernard. Tosun and Calvert Lewin aren't great. West Ham are worse at the back but Fabianski keeps them in it and they have a good attack.

True. And Silva, apparently used to be known as being a defensive coach. I'm old-fashioned anyways. Most modern defenders aren't great defenders, relying too much on defensive mids to cover them. Too many coaches looking for ball playing centre backs and even keepers and wing backs rather than centre and fullbacks who can defend first and foremost and help them close out games.

Had Pereira for ages. Ticked along very nicely. Then he had two tough matches so I transferred for Balbuena. Injured giving away pen, 0. Pereira gets clean sheet and then scores in the next game.

Then I bring in Digne as i was stubborn and didn’t want to admit the Pereira transfer was wrong.
