Selection of top 10k FPL managers wasted initial Wildcard

A small portion of the current top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers took a leaf out of David Wardale’s book and ‘Wasted their Wildcard’ in the first 20 Gameweeks of the season.

Just under 97.08% of those in the top echelon of the game used the chip which was available to them between Gameweek 1 and late December, meaning that just under 3% did not.

These were not even inactive players either. I looked at their teams and confirmed that most of them are actually active managers who change their teams every week.

It could be the case that they did not know the chip expires before the turning of the year, which seems more likely than them knowing the expiry date and not using the chip even to take a couple of hits for free.

The percentage of managers in an overall random sample of 50,000 teams that didn’t use the first Wildcard chip is around 49%.

Taking a closer look at those teams, we find that they are mostly inactive, hence the informal name of ‘dead teams’. So, we know there is a minimum of around 45% inactivity in the game at this point.

The actual percentage will be bigger since many dead teams may have used their Wildcard early in the season before they stopped playing the game.

A future article will look at that question in more detail to quantify the definition of a dead team and calculate how many of them exist.

The arrival of the second Wildcard encouraged 2.55% of the top 10,000 managers to use it right away this week. Their most selected players are shown below.

The resulting chip usage percentages in the top 10k are as follows

ChipTop 10k usageOverall usage
Wildcard2.55%3.64%
Bench Boost9.97%16.76%
Triple Captain11.77%26.21%
Free Hit12.93%19.84%

It is interesting to note how low those percentages are in the top 10k. In previous seasons, it was the case that many managers who enter the top 10k early are those who utilized their chips earlier and took the advantage over more experienced managers who delay their chips till the blank and double Gameweeks.

The percentages in the table above show that most of the managers who are currently enjoying outstanding overall ranks were not particularly helped by the usage of early chips. In fact, no chip has been used by more than 13% of the top 10,000 managers.

The figure above shows that around 75% of the top 10,000 managers have all of their chips intact. If they hold onto them for around 10 more Gameweeks when the blanks and doubles usually start, then we could see something different this year.

As three-quarters of active managers have all the freedom to deploy their chips in any order to cover the double and blank Gameweeks, it might be more challenging to rise up the ranks using late chips strategies like last season.

We will keep monitoring chip usage in the top 10k in the following weeks as we’re entering the second half of the season.

Some nice fixtures, though, for Liverpool, United and Chelsea.

Guys, any ideas what to do with this team? Last time I panicked, took -4 and Digne in for Diop.

    Fabianski / Lössl
    Robertson / Alonso / Doherty / Digne / AWB
    Hazard / Pogba / Eriksen / Richarlison / Snoddy
    Kane / Ings / Jimenez

    1£ ITB

Maybe need to fit Salah or/and TAA in.. Or now save first?

I’d consider another way to get Salah. Sterling has an ownership of 11% right now. Soon it’ll be less than 10%, that is one hell of a differential once he hits form...

Initially looking at Auba and Son to Salah and Jimenez for free. Son needs to go anyway, and Auba I don't trust with the armband so Jimenez offers potentially better value.

Admittedly my keepers and bench are woeful but here's how I did it ON WC.

      Button
      TAA | Digne | Doherty
      Salah | Hazard | Pogba | Richarlison* | Camarasa
      Kane | Auba

      Speroni* | Kamara | Bednarek | Peltier*

*Likely to downgrade Richarlison once fixtures turn to say Fraser and use money to upgrade Speroni/Peltier to playing keeper/defender.

I bought Sane 3 weeks ago for Siggy. 2 blanks Siggy returns both weeks then sold Sane>Pogba before last game. At this time I have zero interest in City players and was reluctant to go near Pep managed midfield in first place because rotation

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years

It is a minefield, but the likes of Sterling, Sane, Aguero, and KDB, will still be up there points wise at the end of the season even if they only play 35 games, rather than 38.
We've even seen how a 10 minute cameo can still return points from these players.

    3. Jon Snow
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 4 months ago

Pogba, Anderson and Richarlson are cheaper and returning regularly. Plus Salah/Hazard/Son are in form and killing ranks if you're a non owner

you can easily go without especially if you can't be bothered to deal with Pep's wheel

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years

I'm not sure any of those three will finish with more points than the City trio I've mentioned.

Yes you can rely on them to play every week, but certainly the latter two aren't in the same quality bracket.

I don't think City's fixtures are great after Liverpool either. Wolves has been doing very well against top teams and Newcastle usually defends well at home. Huddersfield either does very well or terribly at home against the top teams so that's the only fixture I'd be optimistic about but with the added rotation threat and the other premiums performing, just doesn't make sense for me to get City premiums at the moment.

It's a headache, but come on City and Liverpool will be the joint top scorers this season, so going without any City players is surely a huge risk.

Yes because Salah is essential regardless of fixtures while City players are only essential when fixtures are good, i.e. when I expect them to score 4+. It has to do with the higher number of players involved in City goals whereas Salah is involved in quite a high % of Liverpool goals.

Of course you can have a different opinion to mine, otherwise everyone would have the same team.

There's nothing official, but based on the original diagnosis I'd expect him back after the FA cup game this weekend, although no need to rush him back really.

I don’t wanna get rid of Sterling Or Kane but with 0.2 ITB I don’t see how it’s even possible to get Salah.

It’s why I’m anti Salah but would love to be proved there is a simple solution with my rules on sterling and Kane !

    Ederson Hamer
TAA, Alonso, Digne , dodherty, AWB
    Sterling, Martial, Pogba, Richarlison, Fanderson
    Jiminez, Kane, Rashford

The simple solution is to stop being stubborn and remove Sterling who is a much worse pick than Salah.

I think sterling is a great pick and it’s why I find it tough. I feel he can match Salah.

Im also trying to not be as stubborn and at least considering the options now 😉

Yeah I’ve put myself in a real bind. I thought the rotation over Xmas made it genius but I’ve ended up with insane bench points the last two weeks.

Problem is hard to change without a huge hit..

I have similar issues but luckily I can recify with about 4 transfers. I have too much cashed tied up in Trippier and Ederson which can make Salah possible. Its annoying I know and makes wc very tempting

idk im looking at ur team, but I cant get past your bench. If you go bare bones you maybe got an extra 3.5/4mill there. I would say upgrade Sterling because Salah is just guaranteed points right, and well Sterling is great but he aint even gauranteed starts... But then aside from Kane your lacking another heavy hitter, you need 3 imo like Hazard.
Im not saying wc your team but there is no easy way to Salah with this.

You have Ederson,Sterling,Jimenez and Rashford to my
      Fabianski,Salah,Aubameyang and Kamara.

The rest is exactly the same as my squad.

I’m afraid it’s Sterling or Salah for you. To fund Salah Ederson would have to be downgraded and maybe one of Rashford Or Anderson. That’s a lot to give up.

For me. I need to make a choice of Aubameyang and Martial or Hazard and Jimenez.

Sterling hasn't been matching Salah, Salah has great fixtures coming up, and if you want to switch back to Sterling it's an easy downgrade. I'd downgrade Fanderson to Pererya and Ederson to Fabianski. Should just about give you the funds to do Sterling to Salah right?

He might not play as deep when Son is off. Having said that I'm not a big Kane fan myself and personally think having a Spurs midfielder (normally Son, Eriksen while he is away) and using the cash on other premiums is a better option.

So, people took Salah out, presumably so that they could improve the rest of their team with the money they saved on his replacement.

Yet, now they’re scratching their heads trying to get him back in without losing the players they got with the money they saved by not having Salah?
