Meet the Manager #13 – Sean Tobin

Forging close friendships with other Fantasy managers has been instrumental in Sean Tobin’s success and enjoyment of both Fantasy Premier League and Sky Fantasy Football over the years.

In our latest Meet the Manager interview we catch up with Sean at a crucial time in his Fantasy career, after reaching the summit of our Hall of Fame and currently in a career-high 18thspot in FPL and 14thin Sky.

With five top 5,000 finishes in FPL and reaching the top 50 in Sky in 2017/18, this season is no mere fluke.

However, modest Sean is still convinced he’s simply got lucky over the years.

During our 30-minute chat, Sean reveals how the counsel of fellow Fantasy managers that he has known for years has been pivotal to his strong finishes each year.

He also explains how his faith in a 3-4-3 formation and reticence to back a five-man midfield has helped drive this success.

Correcting mistakes swiftly has also been a strong ethos to his Fantasy management and it is no coincidence that his only poor FPL campaign was due to being too slow to react to emerging player trends.

The chat with Sean is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

      B for sure

Son might be very tired, Spurs are lacking VIPlayers, and if Palace beat them today - which I personally expect - their morale will be very very low.

Hazard has Bournemouth and Hud in the next two.

Lampard seems interested in doing well in the FA Cup. Could be a tough draw for a team like Watford or Wolves who are likely to put out their second string teams.

When you get to this stage with 12 Premiership teams already eliminated, it would be silly for Watford and Wolves not to have a proper go at it. I agree with your point though, Derby will be tough, especially at home.

I think the owners of Watford (Pozzo family) and Wolves (Fosun) will probably be more interested in finishing as high up in the PL as possible. Each extra place is worth £2m. To get that sort of money in the FA Cup you need to be losing in the semi-final at worst.

FPL is a funny old game... Higuain just needs to score 4 or 5 goals in his first 4 or 5 games to be an FPL bandwagon. He could then regress and blank for 3 or 4 games and still maintain his usual scoring rate by the end of the season.

His Serie A record is pretty poor last 2 seasons.... but if Sarri gives him the arm around the shoulder AND sets he team up to feed him, he’s obviously well capable of scoring against the shambolic defences he has coming up - bourenmouth, Huddersfield, fulham, Wolves... a decent league 1 striker could score v those teams.

So it’s a bit of a lazy/dangerous analysis to simply look at his Serie A stats & write him off for FPL - those stats are not useful in this scenario

      1. el polako
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 3 months ago

Serie A makes Polish strikers (Milik, Piatek) look good - thats something.

Great defensive play in Italy is a thing of past, Higuain struggling last 2 seasons should be a warning to all.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          5 years, 3 months ago

His goals to games this year has been pathetic... that’s not difficult to see - but it’s not super relevant for FPL purposes.

Ronaldo has failed to score in 9 of his 20 Serie A games this year which would be unheard of in Spain, so again, it’s very lazy/dangerous to simply look at higuian’s shots/goals in the last 6-18 months, see a dodgy enough record, and pair that with “it’s Serie A lol”

Remember this is FPL - he doesn’t need to be a world beater, he just needs to pop in a few tap ins for 4-5 games.

The fact that Sarri will/May set up the team to feed him cannot be overstated enough - it could be massive

            Shevchenko, the list goes on.

But again - not really useful in evaluating Higuain as an FPL prospect for a 5-10 game window

              • 5 Years

If Higuain moved to Spain he would bang in over 20 goals. Saying Seria A is easy league is wrong. I think it’s tougher than most as the weak teams are organised not like the weak teams in FPL who are Sunday league standard at defending. Even Arsenal can’t defend and are fighting for top 4.
Basically I think Higuain could easily have a good goal scoring record at Chelsea with the assists he will receive and up against teams who can’t defend.

I thought the same about Salah when he came to Liverpool and knew he would find it easier to score in FPL as the organisation of the teams are not as strong. Not saying Higuain will do the same but think he will surprise many on here.

I have both Richarlison and Anderson and I have two free transfers. I will for sure sell one of them but I'm not sure who to get rid of. Will it then be best to just sell then both - I will then not regrett selling the wrong one (If I do this they will probably both score goals 🙂 )

Thinking of doing this move (I will wait for potential dg25 news of course)

Anderson and Richarlison -> Sane and Son

        Speroni
        Robertson, Digne, Doherty
        Pogba, Richarlison, Salah, Hazard, Anderson
        Rashford, Jimenez

        Foster, Bednarek, Kamara, Peltier
        5.4 million in the bank

I have Digne but certainly wouldn’t be bringing him in for a DGW when one of the games is City; particularly with the blank not long after.

In addition, all the options you are considering selling are good long term squad members IMO.

if you focus on switching up bench players doesn't have to be

Most people will have 3 liverpool (3)
Fab in goal plus a cover (maybe Foster for 28) (4)
      Perhaps one Burnley (5)
      Couple Leicester from 27 (6,7)

that gives you a skeleton to add to

    3. diesel001
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 3 months ago

There is some obvious preparation IMO because of fixtures.

      1) Getting rid of Everton assets (Digne, Richarlison) in GW27 for Leicester assets (Pereira, Maddison)
      2) Getting rid of Wolves assets (Jimenez) in GW30 for Bournemouth assets (Wilson)
      3) Getting in cheap bench players who will likely play in GW31 and GW33 (Puncheon, Brooks, AWB)
      4) Having triple Liverpool (TAA, Robertson, Salah)

With that sort of set up you could easily have 9 or more decent GW31 and GW33 players. You can FH in GW32 and then WC in GW34 to bench boost in GW35. Triple captain is the difficult one to know when to play.

RP on new article (cheers to Amey and Eat my goal on last)

How are these lot looking for this week? Anything worth an FT or hit?

    1FT 0.6itb
    Fab
    Robbo, VVD, Luiz, Doherty
Salah (C), Haz (v), Sané, Pogba
    Rash, Wilson
    (Hamer) (AWB, Snoddy, Kamara)

    A) Snoddy > max 5.7 (FT)
    B) Snoddy, VVD > Jota, Laporte
    C) Save

      Hey mate 🙂
Just looked at your team and thought that:
Save this gw & do Luiz+Snoddy >> Periera+Jota next gw looks reasonable to me.
I know Chelsea have hudds next gw but after that they have City, Blank, Spurs Wich is less attractive.

Is there a chance for both Man City and Chelsea have DGW on 25 ?

Just looking for a way to get Hazard and found that I have exact fund for this route.

Moving a GW27 Blank to GW25 would only give fans 10/11 days' notice ahead of the rescheduled fixture. The last time a Blank was rescheduled with fewer than 14 days' notice was 2010

Was just looking ahead to week 31 and the fixtures that are definitely on. Right now, I'm not sure I'd want to use a free hit for this, as I did last year. Will probably have at 5/6 in my squad so might be best to just save a couple of transfers and take a hit rather than using a chip. Obviously this can change slightly if teams get knocked out in replays / 5th round.

    West Ham v Huddersfield
    Fulham v Liverpool
    Bournemouth v Newcastle
    Burnley v Leicester

As it stands, the best team I see is:

    Fabianski
    Robertson Pereira Ake
    Salah (c) Mane Anderson Fraser
    Vardy Arnautovic Wilson

Get together a team with 9 - 11 of the above for FA cup QF weekend
Keep 3 players with high TV on the bench (e.g. Man U players)
          Free hit 32 for double
Get back your "FA cup" team for 33 (maybe do 1/2 transfers)
          WC34, get in nice bench
