Sterling misses penalty as Wolves beat Man City in China

There were plenty of Fantasy talking points as the Premier League Asia Trophy reached its conclusion over the weekend.

Manchester City, Wolves, West Ham and Newcastle were all in action as we learned more about how they are shaping up for the new campaign.

There was particularly interesting lines on Pep Guardiola’s attacking options as well as how Wolves are looking in the absence of key personnel.

Wolves players celebrate with Rui Patrício after winning the penalty shoot-out

Goals: None

Assists: None

Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) got the chance to play as the centre-forward for Manchester City as they lost the Asia Trophy final on penalties to Wolves.

The England international could not find a breakthrough in his 45-minute appearance, which also featured a missed penalty.

Sterling’s miss has caused some concern among Manchester City followers about their spot-kick situation.

Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) is, of course, the main man for their penalties but given the amount of times he was substituted around 70-minutes last season, Pep Guardiola still needs to firm up his second choice.

Let’s not forget that Aguero also missed some crucial spot kicks including ones in the Champions League against Spurs, PSG and Barcelona.

Sterling’s miss, as well as unconverted spot-kicks in the shootout for Ilkay Gündogan (£5.5m), David Silva (£7.5m) and Lukas Nmecha will not inspire too much confidence moving forward, while Rui Patrício‘s (£5.0m) heroics should not go unnoticed.

Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), still absent following African Cup of Nations commitments, famously missed one last season at Anfield, allowed by Guardiola to take it despite missing six of his previous 10 at that point.

Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) also missed one against Swansea last season, causing some City fans to even suggest that Ederson (£6.0m) get a look-in.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the penalty situation at Manchester City this season, especially with plenty of interest in both Aguero and Sterling in early drafts.

Also of interest to Fantasy managers is the left-back position with Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) ruled out until September.

After Angeliño (£5.0m) started there against West Ham, it was Oleksandr Zinchenko‘s (£5.5m) turn against Wolves.

After two matches, the pair have very similar pre-season minute counts, so this remains a situation worth monitoring as the summer schedule progresses.

Also, the fact that Leroy Sané (£9.5m) started this match, after 45 minutes against West Ham, goes some way to dispelling rumours that a move to Bayern Munich is imminent.

Guardiola has appeared keen to get the player fit and up to scratch ahead of the new season, which might not make much sense if he was preparing to sell a supposedly unhappy player.

Meanwhile, Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m) found himself deployed as a centre-forward for Wolves again on Saturday.

The continued absence of Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m), as he enjoys extended leave from winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup with Mexico, has left Wolves somewhat short in that department.

We would expect Jiménez to reclaim his starting berth as soon as he is back in the fold, but it is worth knowing Gibbs-White’s versatility as an option.

Were one of either Jiménez or Jota to pick up a serious injury later in the season, and if Nuno has been unable to recruit a new striker, then Gibbs-White could get a run in that position.

However, we must continue to disclaimer this with Adam Traoré‘s (£5.0m) situation.

With Matt Doherty (£6.0m) currently out injured for several weeks, Traoré was being used to fill in at right wing-back, and might have had a crack at the centre-forward role otherwise.

Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) could potentially get the nod on the right in Doherty’s absence though, which might free Traoré up for a move forward until Jiménez returns.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patricio; Bennett, Coady, Boly (Kilman 79′); Jonny (Vinagre 63′), Moutinho (Cundle 79′), Neves (T Taylor 79′), Dendoncker (Wan 79′); A Traoré (Sanderson 63′); Gibbs-White (Ennis 63′), Jota (Perry 63′).

Manchester City (4-3-3): Bravo; Zinchenko (Angelino 62′), Laporte (Harwood-Bellis 62′), Stones (Gundogan 46′), Danilo; Bernabe Walker 46′), Rodri (Garcia 62′), de Bruyne (B Silva 46′); Sané (Nmecha 62′), Sterling (D Silva 46′); Poveda-Ocampo (Knight 74′).

Newcastle 1-0 West Ham

Muo was the goal-scorer as Newcastle beat West Ham in China

Goals: Yoshinori Muto (£5.5m)

Assists: Jamie Sterry

Newcastle looked a much-improved side in their first match under Steve Bruce, although there is still plenty of work to be done.

In the wake of a disorganised and lacklustre performance against Wolves several days earlier, the Magpies’ new manager moved away from the 4-5-1 and reverted to five at the back.

That saw Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) return to the left wing-back role so soon after he vacated it, as Bruce went for a 5-3-1-1 system.

For all the clamour about the Scottish international becoming an ‘out-of-position’ asset this season, this match suggested his time in defence may not be over yet.

Newcastle remain short in the left-back position, hence continued Ritchie’s involvement there.

Paul Dummett (£4.5m) was admittedly rested for the West Ham match, but Ritchie was preferred at left-back to him at times last season anyway.

The problem here was best demonstrated by the fact that when Ritchie came off, Jack Colback was the only option capable of taking his place.

Not surprisingly, given the shortage of options at the club right now, it was Yoshinori Muto (£5.5m) who led the line once again.

While the Japanese international was poor against Wolves, after a disappointing start to life in Newcastle, he offered plenty of threat on Saturday.

Muto’s runs and decent link-up play suggested he could do the job the Magpies need in 2019/20 and he topped off a strong performance with the only goal of the game too.

As things stand, Muto has virtually no competition for his place, with Joselu, Ayoze Pérez (£6.5m) and Salomón Rondón no longer at the club, so he should feature heavily in the next three pre-season friendlies.

Whether he can replicate his performance against West Ham remains to be seen though and with Newcastle’s tough early fixtures, Muto is unlikely to be troubling Fantasy managers as they go through draft after draft.

With Miguel Almirón (£6.0m) still on extended leave following Paraguay’s time at the Copa America, Bruce was very short in attack, handing a start to Elias Sorensen in the number 10 role.

There was encouraging news for the Toon Army as Sean Longstaff (£5.0m) made his first appearance since his injury in March.

He looked sharp in a 26-minute cameo against West Ham and also got a chance to play alongside Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m), a partnership that could be the key to Newcastle’s fortunes this season.

Meanwhile, West Ham ended their time in China with another goal-shy display, highlighting the need for Sebastien Haller (£7.5m) to settle in quickly.

For the third time in pre-season, Michail Antonio (£7.0m) was used as West Ham’s centre-forward instead of in attacking midfield.

This could mean that Manuel Pellegrini doesn’t particularly fancy him in any of the attacking midfield positions and with the arrival of Haller, yet to make a pre-season appearance for West Ham, his chances could become even more limited this season.

However, the prevailing opinion seems to be that Antonio showed good promise in his centre-forward appearances in China and could do well as Haller’s understudy in 2019/20.

After three games of pre-season, it is still unclear who Pellegrini will select in the supporting trio behind his centre-forward.

Felipe Anderson (£7.0m) has been one of the most used West Ham assets of the summer so far so appears likely to hold his place, while Manuel Lanzini (£6.5m) may be in a similar position.

Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m) started on the right against Newcastle, with set-piece specialist Robert Snodgrass (£5.5m) coming on at half-time.

Meanwhile, new signing Pablo Fornals (£6.5m) is yet to be thrown into pre-season action and Jack Wilshere (£5.0m) is also asking difficult questions of Pellegrini.

The former Arsenal man was used in the number 10 role for the second half of the Newcastle match and looked in really good shape across both games in China.

Another winner of the trip to Asia is youngster and budget defender Ben Johnson (£4.0m).

His involvement against Newcastle was shorter than against Manchester City but the local press is already reporting that he can provide serious competition at left-back this season after his time in China.

Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) will be returning to the club late after African Cup of Nations duty while Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) did not fare too well on tour, appearing rusty in both appearances.

Also off the pace against Newcastle was Angelo Ogbonna (£4.5m), who struggled to contain Jacob Murphy in particular.

The fact that he has more pre-season minutes than any other West Ham player may not hold him in good enough stead when other options in his position become available for selection again.

Winston Reid (£4.0m) got his first start in 18 months but showed it will take some time to work back up to his previous level.

Therefore, it seems clear that Fabian Balbuena (£4.5m), still on leave following Paraguay’s Copa America campaign, and Issa Diop (£4.5m) currently face little threat for their places at centre-back.

The latter missed the Newcastle game with a minor back injury which is not being considered as too serious by Pellegrini.

Newcastle United XI (5-3-1-1): Dubravka; Ritchie (S Longstaff 64′), Clark (Fernandez 46′), Lascelles, Schär, Sterry (Manquillo 46′); Shelvey (M Longstaff 78′), Colback (Aarons 78′), Hayden (Ki 46′); Sorensen (Murphy 46′); Muto (Lazaar 78′).

West Ham United (4-2-3-1): Fabianski (Roberto 63′); Cresswell, Ogbonna, Reid (C Sánchez 46′), Zabaleta (Johnson 71′); Rice, Cullen (Noble 63′); Anderson (Diangana 63), Lanzini (Wilshere 46′), Yarmolenko (Snodgrass 46′), Chicharito (Antonio 46′).

There are none. Must-have defenders and must-have mids sure, but not up top.
Some have one premium, some 2 mid-price, some max out at 6.5. There are no rules for the front 3 this year.

No real must haves, but I'd say if you don't have Salah AND Sterling, you should get one of Auba/Kane/Aguero - purely as a captaincy rotation option.

I'm also going to repeat myself, whoever nails down the starting striker role for Chelsea will be golden, assuming the other options come in around £7m.

I think KdB and Eriksen are good enough rotational options for the captaincy to not go for any of the premiums. They both have very strong home records and complement Salah and Sterling respectively when taking fixtures into account.

I think it's a very brave move to captain one of KdB or Eriksen, and if you don't have both Salah and Sterling, there is no excuse to not have one premium striker.

I think that money is better spent on upgrading the defence, and owning Wilson and Vardy over cheaper attackers.

More than one way to play the game for sure.
I just wouldn't feel too happy captaining Eriksen when Auba has Burnley at home GW2.
Kane has Newcastle at home GW3
Aguero has Brighton at home GW4

I mean maybe you'd say you'll captain Salah 90% of the time anyway, and that's not a bad plan of course, but for me, two premium captain picks have always been the plan.

          For me,
More consistent starter (Deulofeu had spells in and out of the team last season)
Out and out striker (Deulofeu can also be used as an attacking midfield - like Perez for example, but is classified as a striker)
On penalties (another bonus in this new world of VAR)

That's about it, like I say, just personal preference.

Has anyone thought about going double Everton attack? Choosing between Richarlison & Sigurdsson seems coin-flippy so now I'm considering both. They have the best fixtures short to medium term.

GW3 & GW4 could be tricky for Bournemouth with Man City and then Leicester away, so I'm leaning towards just one of their players. Currently on this:

    Ryan,
    Digne, Trent, Robbo, AMN
    Rich, Siggy, Salah, Sterling, Perez
    King

Entirely possibly that Kane could outscore him. Won't be much between Kane, Salah and Sterling this year.

Also Aguero, with penalties, seem to remember Man City being quite unfortunate with penalty decisions last year, would have had a few more with VAR I'm sure.

Yeah I was thinking about that too, the way they play lends itself to more penalty claims with constant pressure around the box and having so much possession.

No chance is he a better player than Salah. He wont outscore Salah either.

You talk about lucky penalties but Spurs are even worse than Liverpool for diving in the penalty area. Son, Kane, Alli, bunch of cheats the lot of them. VAR will get them big time this season.

Not sure about him outscoring Salah.. But I can see him matching mane and Sterling.. If this was beginning of last season everyone would say Kane is a must have at 11. However, ppl have short memories and Kane had an injury ridden last season.

Give your head a wobble Salah is everything Kane will never be it's always Spurs players diving for pens (Ali,Kane Son,Lamela etc) VAR is vital this year in fact it seemed to work in our favour in the CL last season.

Is thinking about rotating 4.5 defenders over the first few weeks too old school? It’s 0.5 cheaper than zinchinko/Kelly in a 442 formation (along side two pool defenders and an Everton one)

Watching dunk’s transfer closely but diop pairs well with burnley Or dunk early on. That 0.5 helps get from Fraser to siggy, Coleman to digne or something else. With mediocre city fixtures for clean sheet potential out the gate, feels like a good way to squeeze a bit of cash but haven’t seen anyone do this here?

You need to get lucky for it to work.... but if it does it should enable you to have an advantage elsewhere. I usually plan to do this before it goes tit up and i WC in GW3

That's the problem, literally no 4.5m, or even 5m defender are standing out at all.
I was on Targett and Taylor rotating, but didn't like it.
Holding would be decent value at 4.5m, and like you say Dunk or Tarkowski at Leicester would be okay..and Gibson first choice at Burnley by default would be even better.

Personally, I do think it's old school. There's a huge gulf between the top and the rest. The CityPool assets are too good value to overlook, and for 5.5 you can fill your boots with other premiums. So you'd want a set&forget 4 if not 5 defenders. With 4, you just want one 4.5 benchie for emergencies.
If you go for 2x4.5 rotations, I do think the quality is very low and you'd be lucky to get more than 2 points most weeks, even with 'easy' fixtures.

When Leicester buy a player that is 4.5, do you think that player plus a west ham (or burley) player is too risky? Diop seems to get forward a bunch

I’m assuming a WC somewhere in the first 8 weeks? We are all looking to scrap an extra 0.5 or 1.0 and this is a way to do it

See, it would cite Leicester and West Ham as two clubs who've done a great job strengthening their attacks while neglecting their defences (particularly if Maguire goes). So I'd invest in their mids and strikers, but I don't think their defenders will get any more points than bog-standard 4.5s elsewhere.

Wilson has only outscored King 1 of the last 4 season and that was by 2 goals. If your point is that he is less consistent then Wilson - I'm not seeing that. We are comparing a player who is 8 and a player who is 6.5. The 6.5 player only got 20 points less last year and has outscored him every other year... so I'll take the 1.5 ITB and 20 less points.

Looking at what has happened with other leagues looks negligible after utilizing VAR but do those leagues have the hand rule that has just been implemented in the EPL? I don't think anyone knows yet how that will effect things.

Will players at times actually be aiming and hoping for hand balls when it appears they have little to know chance getting a shot on net or no clear passing lane? If so doesn't it come down to how successfully consistent they are at hitting their mark?

Mane has had a long season almost a full year - I think he'll probably play as pool can't give up a game but as we get closer to the season we should get more news on that.

We really don't know. He could get one game, or mane might come on after 60 mins if Liverpool aren't blowing Canaries away. But then you're stuck with Origi and can't use 3 active spots for Pool.

From what I've read, Mane won't return to training until after the Charity Shield.
So probably less than 50-50 that he starts GW1.
I think quite possible he starts GW2 though.

      ..Just my opinion.

To clarify, I'm saying Mane is slightly less than 50-50 to start GW1, so Origi will take his place. But by GW2 I expect the usually front three of Mane, Salah, Firmino to play.

Origi will also get the Euro Cup start.

This is Villa a promoted team. Last time they were in the prem they got spanked (I'm a Villa fan). It's easy to wait and see how they adjust to the prem this time around. They are cheap assets so easy to transfer in. I just think you can use your funds better on proven players until the Villa fwd prove value.

Think DCL will be trumped by a new striker they seem to be in the market for - Siggy/Rich is the double-up I am looking at currently - depends if Rich has any pre-season as well though.

I know Everton's defence had a storming end of season, and they aren't going to have better fixtures to continue that than those they have tbf.

I currently own Dendoncker and no other Wolves players. I do really like both Jimenez and Jota. The latter can offer really good value during the season.

But are you sure about picking Jota from the off? Wolves’ first few fixtures aren’t that good and in addition, they play in Europe.

Matip imo. He has earned the right to be the starting the CB. Gomez, although exceptional, will have to wait for his chance as Matip did.

Thanks, thought so. Whisper it, but I'm doubling with TAA and Matip until the inevitable early WC GW4. Until then I think Matip can *just* cover VVD for a million less

Auba has the best first two fixtures. He is their main man.

Expecting something around 20-25 in 2 gw ( excluding the captain points)

I can't see viable captain options? You can never trust when Auba starts for example.

I think auba will definitely start the first 4 gameweeks. He is their main man, and arsenal as a team are way better when he is on the pitch.

Re captaincy : last year Salah went on a drought still people captained him. So it's not like if you have certain players , you get the right captain.

        It also includes some luck.

Kdb, Robbo,TAA,Vardy, auba are decent enough options to captain.

I still prefer Zinch, but Laporte - Stones - Otamendi is the ranking of Pep's it seems. New signing/s and Fernandinho slotting back there notwithstanding

I think stones-laporte is the first choice cb pairing.

            Ota as backup.

Fernandinho is pretty crucial in the middle. Think he'll play in that role only

It depends on opposition, I see both Stones and Otamendi (if he stays) getting minutes. Pep spoke about it last season...

“When it’s a lot of long balls I prefer Nico and Vinny. When there’s more of a gap, like Chelsea, Stones is an incredible player in those situations."

Re Fernandinho, no doubt an important player, but they've just spent 60-70m on Rodri, essentially both of them fighting it out for the same position.

                This helps.

Maybe just maybe I can consider an arsenal defender instead of Stones for the first two fixtures?

It was reported yesterday that Pep was prepared to flog Ota and Mangala cheap to fund a quick Maguire. Seems it won't happen, but the idea that he'd get rid of Ota but not Stones is telling.
Pep always eases his mids and strikers into his system before letting them loose in PL matches - remember how long before we saw Jesus. Mahrez, Sane, Gundog? Fernandino will start at DM while Rodri gets accustomed. I just don't see anyone other than Stones to partner Laporte in the first team squad.

The Otamendi transfer talk has been ongoing for a while, be interesting to see how it plays out, but if he stays, he'll get minutes, I'm sure of that with only Laporte, Stones and Garcia as recognised centre backs.

Mahrez made his debut against Arsenal in GW1 last season. Gundogan started games as soon as he was fit too, but I get what you're saying re Rodri. The fact he's getting a pre season is important tho, wouldn't surprise me if he threw him straight in.

Well obviously, but going anti-template and the template smashing it means you will use your transfers to get back to the template and you will still be behind the points you have already lost. Or the flip-side is if the template does badly and your team does well you will be in a great position, which is why I'm saying it's a risk/reward team.

Really smashes the template. As an anti-3-up-top-guy, I have to admit that's a damn fine set-up. If you'd just dump the car crash Brighton keepers, I'd say it's nigh-on perfect!

The strikers in this draft are the one's who are quite important players for their respective teams.

Somewhere or other, they have to be involved in goals.

I tend to think that most points are at the back though

Thanks mate, but I’d rather have digne over Coleman for corners and free kicks.

Robertson crosses in from the left to Salah (who plays on the right).. see lots of assist potential, hence he’s worth the 0.5m over VVD for me.

Not sure if there’s a better 4.5m defender right now though :/

    Is this an choice?

    A) Kdb & Deeney

    B) Noble & Kane

In both options they would be playing every week.
Same money, and obviously A looks more balanced, but can't shake the feeling Kane at 11 is too good to miss, and out of 5mill midfielders, Noble is a decent shout, pops up with goals, will start, and takes the pens.
