Top 10k managers bring de Bruyne back for frustrating blank

Kevin de Bruyne‘s (£10.0m) popularity among the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers is on the up once again.

However, the Belgian blanked upon his return to the Manchester City team to cap off a frustrating Saturday of Gameweek 9.

On two occasions, de Bruyne went close to scoring against Crystal Palace, once nodding a glancing header against the post and then not receiving a squared pass from Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) when he was faced with an open goal.

Following his Gameweek 7 injury at Everton, de Bruyne remained the most fashionable midfield asset among top 10k squads but saw a drop-off in representation at that level of over 26 percentage points going into Gameweek 8.

It would appear that those who sold the Manchester City man for that disastrous round of action before the international break did not do too well, with many who benched de Bruyne pushing into the top 10k.

That shift, plus 270,000+ new owners for Gameweek 9, has brought his ownership in the top 10k back up to 71.1%.

While it was a case of what could have been at Selhurst Park, there are perhaps positives to take from how close de Bruyne did go to getting attacking returns.

By contrast, those at the upper echelon of FPL have largely lost faith in Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) ahead of his trip to Old Trafford on Sunday.

At the Gameweek 8 deadline, the Egyptian was owned by 54.1% of managers inside the top 10k and was second only to de Bruyne for popularity among midfielders.

However, now that the Gameweek 9 deadline has passed, just 31.6% at that level of the game are holding Salah – that’s a drop-off of 22.5 percentage points.

At the same time, Sadio Mané (£11.8m) has travelled in the opposite direction.

Heading into Gameweek 8, the Senegalese international was not among the top-five most popular midfielders among the top 10k.

A large number of managers inside the top 10,000 will be hoping it is Mané who delivers at Old Trafford, not Salah

However, a 12-point haul for Mané against Leicester both propelled his backers into the upper reaches of the worldwide rankings, but also triggered a flurry of transfer market activity.

540,000+ managers signed Mané for Gameweek 9, making him the third-most fashionable midfielder among the top 10k this weekend, behind only de Bruyne and Mason Mount (£6.8m).

Not surprisingly, Teemu Pukki (£7.1m) also saw his representation among the top 10k decrease for Gameweek 9.

Even in Gameweek 8, he was still the most popular forward at this level of the game but dropped from 57.1% top 10k ownership to just 38.3% over the international break.

It would appear that the decision to leave the so-called ‘Pukki Party’ was a sensible one as Norwich drew another away-day blank.

Callum Wilson continues to act as an FPL enigma

The top 10k largely stayed away from Callum Wilson (£8.0m) for the Canaries trip to the Vitality Stadium, even though Daniel Farke’s men had a dreadful defensive record coming into it.

He was owned by just 21.3% of managers at this level for Gameweek 9 and was barely considered by them for the captaincy too.

Wilson’s effective ownership among the top 10k was just 26.8% for this weekend, which could have seen act as an incredible rank-boost but, alas, he blanked for just the second time this season.

Abraham was a cause of much frustration for the top 10k managers

Tammy Abraham (£7.7m) was another huge disappointment on Saturday afternoon as he blanked against Newcastle.

The Chelsea forward really should have registered attacking returns, hitting the crossbar and spurning a golden close-range chance.

That was of huge frustration to managers inside the top 10k for Gameweek 9.

They had moved en masse for Abraham increasing his ownership at that level from 48.6% to 69.3%.

Furthermore, Abraham was also the most captained player for Gameweek 9 among the top 10k managers.

He was supported with the armband by 25.9% of them, almost double the number who went for a benched Sergio Aguero (£12.2m).

The Manchester City forward was the second-most captained player at this level with the backing of 14.5%.

In what has already proven to be another damp squib of a Gameweek, Harry Kane (£10.9m) also let down those who trusted him with the armband.

10.1% of managers in the top 10k fancied his chances against an out-of-form Watford side, only to see Kane blank against the Hornets.

The Wildcards continue to get used up by the top 10k. We are now at 51.8% usage for that chip among these managers.

Not surprisingly, that’s now double the number who have played the Triple Captain.

That chip stands at 25.4% usage, the Free Hit at 14.3% and the Bench Boost at 12.8%.

Pukki got attacking return vs Liv and City, nil when play against Villa and Bournemouth.

Wilson get attacking return against City and nothing against Norwich.

    Hi guys,
Looking to get rid of Pukki and Son, but not sure about replacements. I have 2FT and .2 ITB, also willing to take a -4 hit.

    Current team:
    TAA. SOY BOLY DIOP RICO
    KDB Sterling Mount SON Hayden
    Tammy Wilson. Pukki

    Thoughts?

Got 2FTs with no real pressing issues, so looking to sure up the bench.
Thus to enable Kelly to Rico, would you do:

    A) Pope to Roberto
    B) Tomori to Lascelles/Webster
    C) Soyuncu to Lascelles/Webster
    D) None of the above and keep Kelly

    Thanks

          Salah | Sterling | Mane | KdB
          Kane

      Soy to Lascelles/Janmaat. Fixtures 🙂

Soy's lack of goal threat is bothersome in a season with few clean sheets. Getting a Man U vibe from Leicester's defence... Not due to any fault of theirs. Just that EVERY team attacks these days, unlike past seasons when we had defensive teams who'd only park the bus

So nice. I just picked him up as well this week. I took a 16-point hit to get my team where I wanted it and then took the strategy of trying to offset it with a bench boost. Alonso darn near paid for the hits himself, so that was very delightful.

Thanks for the replies. Wasn't going to lose McGinn, but in a good position and the perceived wisdom seems to be it's generally best to use your transfers aggressively. McGinn is an easy swap back when the fixtures turn / if CHO doesn't work out.

Are people taking the wrong approach to solving the issue of a lack of clean sheets by switching from big at the back to budget options with no attacking threat? Defence is the one place where 1-1.5m buys you A LOT more points scoring potential, but now everyone's obsess with Soy, Tomori etc "because there are no CS anyway". I see it the opposite way - we need the top quality attacking defenders to fill the void, and unlike in midfield there's not a price chasm between dull and exciting.

I sold Digne for Alonso three GWs ago with this in mind, when the move to cheap and cheerful was all the rage. I just think for that little bit more money you can have another spot in your team where a big double digit haul is possible. Spiking these kind of defensive hauls is a huge differential. Sure you need to get lucky, but to an extent you're making your own luck by picking players with more than one avenue to points.

I'll also be moving VVD to Robertson soon for Liverpool's great run to go alongside TAA. Big at the back lives on!

I'm definitely sticking with it. Might do Alonso to Pereira if/when Alonso loses his place. The starting XI just looks so much better when you gave genuinely dangerous premium defenders, and you don't really lose that much apart from one downgrade somewhere else in your team.

Yep. I love having defenders with that real threat of scoring. Alonso seems to hitting a purple patch, so I'm gonna sit back and hope for more. TAA tomorrow should be fun as well.

I think there's a chance Alonso keeps his spot. They've actually started keeping clean sheets since he came in, and of course I'm not suggesting he's the reason, but he's part of a defence that is now working, and he's a major threat in other ways as we've seen. I'll drop him when Lampard drops him.

No, it doesn't live on. Let's be very honest here. The 8th ranked midfielder and the joint 9th ranked forwards are tied for points with the top-ranked defender

Big ATB died with Alisson, Laporte, Gbamin and Kante injuries. It might be resurrected with Alisson's return, and you could have made the best move swooping for Alonso/Pereira at the right times, but it doesn't change the fact that big ATB has gotten managers nowhere near what was anticipated, because attacking points don't really beat regularity of clean sheets

That said, I'm buying Robbo next week to add to my TAA + Lunc + Rico + Janmaat collection 😀

I didn't say it was successful to this point. But I am saying that I think it is going to be successful moving forward, right when everyone has completely written it off. It's not dead, but people are acting like it is because it hasn't been the best start.

Oh. I see. It was offset by a number of freak occurrences... So, as those occurrences are fixed and/or the teams find ways around those key injuries, we could see a return. Maybe that's what's happening now 🙂

What happens when Emerson is fit, though? Lampard always has clear favourites...

What happens is I drop Alonso for another premium defender. That's the thing, people are always so worried about future transfers. Transfers are part of the game. When Emerson got injured the opportunity for a few weeks of Alonso was too good to pass up. Most would advise against it, which I don't understand.

I've never got this "what will you do when x happens?". I couldn't wait to bring Alonso in, I was pumped. Ask around here though and just about everybody would tell you it's a transfer waiting to happen blah blah. Points are points.

Not always, though. Some "transfers waiting to happen" haven't gone so well, like Adrian and Zinchencko

So you can be right sometimes, wrong other times. Not sure there's one sure way around it. Points are points, yes

That's true. I guess you've got to pick the right players too, but I don't personally put Adrian in the Alonso category. Alonso is FPL royalty and if he's starting, he's in my thinking. Adrian, I can see why people did it, but it didn't appeal. Nor Zinchenko.

I think you can even go further and say the scoring power of Lundstram and Rico (both initially priced @$4m) has killed it off too. Why, pay the big $ for a top scoring defender when you have Lundstram playing in the midfield (for a team the gets CS) and Rico, an attacking full back on corner duties.

There's that too... Although their hauls are harder to predict

Oh well. Everybody's hard to predict this season X_X

Auba hat trick vs SHU might happen. Man U might win. Bournemouth vs Norwich might be 0-0... It's just the way the script works now

To an extent that's also true. I've got Lundstram and Rico as well (the former coming off my bench this GW and the latter I started). But topping them up with premiums feels great, rather than the ultra dull Tomori and Soyuncu.

Kind of agree with you for at least own excitement. Probably two out of three defenders with attacking potential are enough for me. TAA Robbo on the card plus Lundstram. On Alonso, the Emerson's return has been bothering ... should have been braver.

KDB was at about 72 when I went to sleep last night on FPLStatistics.

Thought that I’d be able to do Son to KDB after Mane gets away injury free today.

How has he gone up last night? The fella should have fallen at least once while there was the mass exodus when he missed the last match.

      Fixed.

      Loyalty program, same with Martial.
No point the price sinking due to injury.
Bad form should always make the price drop quicker.
