Well-timed goals for Salah and Mané as FPL bosses consider double-up

Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City

Goals: Fabinho (£5.5m), Mohamed Salah (£12.3m), Sadio Mané (£12.0m) | Bernardo Silva (£7.9m)

Assists: Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Jordan Henderson (£5.4m)

Bonus Points: B Silva x3, Fabinho x2, Salah x1

Liverpool attacking assets went a long way to justifying a double-up in the coming weeks as they punished Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Despite losing 137,239 owners ahead of Gameweek 12, it was Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) who arguably looked the most dangerous at Anfield.

He added Liverpool’s second in the first half with a well-placed header following an Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) cross.

Salah looked very dangerous for Liverpool in Gameweek 12

“The second goal we scored, I don’t think I ever saw a goal like this. Probably not. A right full-back with a 60-yard pass to the left full-back; two more touches and a cross over 40 yards, 50, and a header. That’s pretty special. It was a good moment to score a goal like this.” – Jurgen Klopp

Now with two goals in as many home matches, perhaps we should not be too surprised that Salah found the net in such a big fixture.

As we reported in the Members-only section of our most recent Captain Sensible article, the Egyptian went into Gameweek 12 joint-top of the league for shots on target in the previous four rounds, despite registering only 238 minutes in during that time. That suggests that when he gets back to playing week-in, week-out, he can offer serious goal threat once again.

Mané’s second-half goal kept up the pressure on Salah owners

Sadio Mané (£12.0m) also kept up the pressure on Salah owners though as he added his 11th attacking return of the campaign, and his sixth in the last five matches.

“The third goal very, very good as well, a sensational cross and Sadio in the right position.” – Jurgen Klopp

It means that only Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) has scored more Fantasy points after 12 Gameweeks than Mané, the Senegalese international just nine off the current leader’s total (92).

Crucially, he remains ahead of Salah despite the Egyptian managing one more point than him against Manchester City.

The gap currently stands at 11 points and is widened further when we look at points per start for the two players.

Salah has averaged 6.5 points per game in matches that he has started this season while Mané’s figure here is 7.5 points per game.

It is also worth mentioning that Mané has somewhat shirked off one of his detrimental factors from last season. Just five of his 25 attacking returns came away from home in 2018/19.

The Salah vs Mané debate could come to an end if managers consider owning both for Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures

Fast-forward to Gameweek 12 of 2019/20 and, of his 11 goal involvements so far, five of them have come on the road and six at Anfield – a much more even spread.

Also troubling Salah owners currently is an ongoing issue with his ankle, injured against Leicester in Gameweek 8. While it is not hurt badly enough for him to miss matches, Klopp has been managing the knock. That’s probably why Salah has not completed 90 minutes the Premier League since that Leicester match.

Against Manchester City, there was a moment in the first half where it looked like Salah might have to come off as the ankle in question was rolled by a tackle. However, he was able to continue until the 86th minute when he was replaced by Joe Gomez (£5.1m). That substitution did seem largely tactical in nature though as Manchester City were staging a late surge.

“After they scored for 3-1 they had momentum and we had heavy legs. We tried to change it a little bit; we actually changed at half-time to 4-4-1-1, and changed back late in the game to 4-5-1.” – Jurgen Klopp

Meanwhile, the international break should help Salah get some much-needed rest for the ankle.

Fantasy managers have been debating the merits of Salah vs Mané ever since the start of last season but, with both players showing statistical form and passing the eye test in recent weeks, the prospect of owning both of them is potentially a viable strategy in the upcoming weeks with some appealing home fixtures (Brighton, Everton and Watford) before their blank in Gameweek 18.

Manchester City’s defence was really poor against Liverpool

However, (dare we say this?) it could be argued that Liverpool’s attacking display was greatly helped by a dreadful defensive outing from Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s men came to Anfield without first-choice goalkeeper Ederson (£6.1m), who was injured in the Champions League and are, of course, still short one Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m).

However, the Citizens’ manager made the bizarre decision not to use Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) at left-back and left Joao Cancelo (£5.3m) on the bench.

“Mendy after two seasons injured, when he plays a game… yesterday he couldn’t train. He’s not injured now, he goes with the national team.” – Pep Guardiola

Angeliño (£4.7m) did offer some threat going forward but he was left very exposed to Salah for most of the game and allowed the Egyptian far too much space to work in.

Stones and Fernandinho were often left exposed at centre-back

Guardiola’s team opted to try and defend by holding possession in the Liverpool half but whenever they lost the ball, Liverpool punished them. That’s why they found themselves 2-0 down after 13 minutes despite looking the so-called better team up until that point.

Fernandinho (£5.2m) and John Stones (£5.3m) were named at centre-back and, with both players largely known for their ability on the ball rather than defensive capabilities, were left very exposed to the Liverpool counter.

Again, we probably shouldn’t be too surprised to see Manchester City’s defence suffer on the road once again. In the Members-only section of last week’s Captain Sensible article, we reported that in the four previous away matches to this one, the reigning champions had the seventh-worst expected goals conceded (xGC) in the league, recorded against relatively goal-shy opposition in Crystal Palace, Everton, Norwich and Bournemouth. With that in mind, it seemed inevitable that Liverpool attackers would enjoy a profitable outing against them.

The question now to ask is whether Salah and Mané will have the same joy away to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 13? Perhaps not. Only Leicester (three), Newcastle (four) and Sheffield United (four) have conceded fewer goals at home this season than the Eagles (five).

Robertson has outperformed Alexander-Arnold in recent weeks

The greater interest for the trip to Selhurst Park may well be in Liverpool’s defensive assets rather than their attacking ones, with the Eagles joint-bottom of the league for goals at home this season (four).

Despite greater interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) this season, it is Robertson who goes into Gameweek 13 in the better form.

He provided the assist for Salah’s goal against Manchester City and now has three of his last four outings. In that time, his colleague on the right-hand side of defence has just one.

From Gameweek 7 onwards Robertson has averaged 5.3 points per game while Alexander-Arnold has managed just 3.5 points per game in that time.

Alexander-Arnold has disappointed his owners of late

It seems to be the lack of clean sheets that is causing the main problem for the right-back as Liverpool still have just two this season and none at Anfield.

Despite standing up particularly well to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, Bernardo Silva (£7.9m) pounced on a deflected cross to deny a first home shut-out of the campaign. Relegation-threatened Norwich and Southampton are the only two sides without one so far.

That leaves a tough decision awaiting Fantasy managers going for a triple-up on Liverpool options. Gameweek 13 looks a better prospect for the defence given Palace’s home record, while subsequent home matches seem more likely to favour the attackers.

As for Manchester City’s forward players, there is certainly mounting pressure on the large number of managers in possession of them.

Aguero’s Anfield hoodoo goes on as he failed to score there once again on Sunday

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m) remains the most popular, still sat in 40.1% of teams but he has just one attacking return since Gameweek 8.

Arguably, the Belgian was unlucky not to come away from Anfield with something as his delivery from corners, free-kicks and open play was still excellent – his colleagues just couldn’t get on the end of them.

Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) was particularly out-of-character on Sunday afternoon as he failed to make a connection with a number of well-placed balls into the box.

That said, he has never scored at Anfield in the entirety of his professional career and has now gone 782 minutes without a goal there. It’s a truly staggering statistic for a player with such strong goal-scoring pedigree but perhaps shows the power of Anfield.

Sterling was by far Man City’s most dangerous player at Anfield

It was a mixed afternoon for Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) owners. He was arguably Manchester City’s most dangerous player and was perhaps unfortunate not to get something against his former employers.

With many Fantasy managers considering the Liverpool attacking double-up, Sterling could be the fall-guy. Had he picked up a fifth yellow card of the season at Anfield, then many would have been further pushed into that move.

As things stand, it could be worth giving him, and indeed de Bruyne, at least one more week. Chelsea come to the Etihad Stadium in Gameweek 13, still without a clean sheet on the road this season. They have been breached a total of 12 times on the road, only Aston Villa (13), Watford (13) and Newcastle (14) shipping more in such matches thus far.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, van Dijk, Lovren, Alexander-Arnold; Wijnaldum, Fabinho, J Henderson (Milner 61′); Mané, Firmino (Oxlade-Chamberlain 79′), Salah (Gomez 87′).

Manchester City XI (4-2-3-1): Bravo; Angeliño, Fernandinho, Stones, Walker; Gündogan, Rodri; Sterling, de Bruyne, B Silva; Aguero (Gabriel 71′).

I think you need one Liverpool full back in there (either TAA or Robertson).

Then other defender can be a cheapie

You're probably right Palace fixtures are set to improve. I wouldn't go Kelly though since he is not nailed by any means.

I'm planning that transfer too so totally on board with that.

I think a Liverpool defender needs to be your priority. Team looks in great shape though.

Are you set on keeping Chilwell?

I'd be tempted to do Mendy > TAA/Robbo, and downgrade Chilwell to someone like Janmaat to free up funds.

Your front 7 is fire though. Wouldn't be looking to get rid of any of those.

If you downgrade Sterling to Maddison you could do Mendy to Robertson
Mendy definitely doesn't play often enough, so not a difficult deicision there, but Sterling is always risky to take out. I replaced him 3 weeks ago and in the first GW he made 11 points, but then blanked twice

Yeah that goes with my thinking - just wanted others opinions - probably do it soon to not miss out on any potential rises and take the risk no one gets injured over international break..

Chillwell i'll keep for just now, i took him in just before the 9-0 game so showing him some loyalty but no doubt he's just not as effective as perreria long term i don't think in terms of attacking returns

But yeah front 7 is ace as it is, just Sterling been pissing me off for weeks now - half his points have came from 2 games basically

How many clean sheets would you forecast Liverpool have by GW38?

They're on 2 from their first 12 games
They got 20 from 38 last season

That would be ~12 CS in their next 26 games... not terrible - it would have TAA & Robbo on an extra 100 points each from appearances & clean sheets onto their current scores, pre-baps, and pre-attacking returns

So they probably both have a decent shot at another 50 points worth of baps & attacking returns in the next 26 to get up to the 200 point mark

                      15-16 sounds right

You're the man with the stats. How many did City have this time last year? I can see tightening up in a long run in

Ederson got 7 CS in first 12 GW's last year
Finished up with 20 in 38

Is it a big problem not to join the Vardy party when you have Abraham, Jiminez and Ings? They gave me 24 points this weekend and with the exception of Abraham next GW have easy fixtures coming up

                      That's a decent front 3 going forward.

Do you have Maddison or any form of Leicester 'cover'? Hard to argue against getting Vardy in, but I wouldn't be in any rush to transfer 1 of those front 3 out.

So far, only Soy, but I have 2 FT and 2.6 in the bank (not enough to switch Ings to Vardy directly though)

I just can't see Ings outscoring Vardy over the next 5 GW. Team form and fixtures must come in to your thinking (and that has to include the defensive form of the opposition as well).

I agree, Ings won't outscore Vardy and will most likely not score every GW. The question is if it's worth it to downgrade somewhere else to make the switch or if I have to consider dropping Jiminez or Abraham for Vardy (which I don't fancy)

If I go down the obvious move route of Boly > Robbo, given Robbo is going to continue to rise and Boly (although slowly) will continue to drop, should I just do it now or too risky in case Robbo gets himself injured?

Although I have plenty of cash for that move itself, losing out on a 0.2m price swing could scupper future moves....

Keep your eye on stats and hold-out as long as you can. I am in a similar boat re. Robbo's price, but wouldn't panic yet.

In the exact same position. Just have to hold as long as we can and keep an eye on fplstats.

As soon as it looks like Robbo rise is imminent I'm pulling the trigger but it's hard to postpone when you know the move you want to make.

Slightly easier to postpone as I’m still vaguely considering going for the Salah Mané double up instead so procrastinating helps!

Looking to bring Ings in after the Arsenal game. Great fixtures and, even though Soton are woeful, Ings always finds way to get points, is on pens, and posts decent stats.

My only fear is owning him with the fixture congestion and probably rotation etc, but I'm think he'll be prioritised for their more winnable games.

I think Ings is the only Soton player that could be considered, even for the Arsenal game. His five goals this season came vs Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea, Wolves and Everton

                            Wow, didn't realise that.

Ings is the type of striker who Arsenal defenders hate because of his pressing, so he could be one to look at this week.

Dilva could actually haul but he will need at least a double digit haul to make that 2nd -4 worth while. Risky business.à

I got Mousset and Maddisson in part of a -4 so might as well stick to my plan to play Mousset vs UTD and do Mount to Dilva start of GW13.

Pulisic has a match in Americas on 20, Chelsea have match on 23. Guess you can get it royally wrong if Pulisic is benched. Mount is most nailed as he can fill all attacking mid positions. Do pulisic to Maddison/Tielemans

So that we can mount higher in ranks. People just dont like the motto 'Dont fix something that aint broken'. 3 great chances Mount created last match and 1 big chance was easy tap in. Also with his great passing he is second to only Jorginho in BPS.

My GW's are starting to settle now.

GW9 I was ranked at 1.3m, only 38 points that GW. That -12 screwed me over big time.

                                    GW10 65 points -4.

                                    GW11 76 points no hits.

                                    GW12 82 piints -4.

Now my rank is at 297k. Hoping to clim further.

2 tranfers away from a team which I feel will need no hits for a while unless unforseen injuries or suspension strike. 2nd GK aside, will also have a full playing bench for GW18 Pool blank. No hits requited that GW.

                                    Planning ahead 🙂

Probably until Boly comes back. Bennett is a threat though so I would'nt go there. It just isn't a good long term move and there isn't any guarantees that other 4.4 guys won't outscore him.

Didn't see the game so not sure how he did, but he did it the bar with a shot from fairly close range.

Think his sub was only because Bournemouth were chasing the game and they moved to a 3-4-1-2 formation.

His main competition, Lloyd Kelly, is injured so I'm confident he still starts.

Is keeping Sterling long-term a smart move or a stubborn move?

                                    From GW2 onward, he's performed like a 7.5m asset.

I’ve managed to keep him at the minute. I feel like he could hatty any minute, and there’s not many in the league that I feel like that with. He’s an expensive risk, but I’ve a high tv, so I can warrant it

will be a good differential soon.
i can see merit in switching between Salah/Sterling based on fixtures (neither have any value built up in their transfer price) but whether that outperforms buy and hold im not sure.

If he didn't play for City then he's an easy sell (Auba and Kane are easy sells for me because of the teams they play for).

City still looked good yesterday and their xG is still better than anyone else's. The rotation and 4 yellows though is a concern.

Chelsea are great at getting goals away and Tammy is the main man. Mount isnt that involved atm tho

Given City's defense I wouldn't bench Abraham, esp. considering his away statistics. Lundy at home vs Utd sounds a good option though

As Tomori, Dendo and Hayden owner I think I have to start both. And if Ederson is still injured, who knows what will happen. Chelsea counter attacks could and should be dangerous.

GW 19 is on Dec 26, that's the last time to play WC for the first half of the season
You don't have much need to WC at the moment, but maybe consider it before Liverpools blank in GW 18

Mousset. I can't believe that Ayew has scored so many already. I don't rate him as a player at all (expect that he works hard for the team)

Exact funds right now to do this:

Ota, Sterling, King > Robbo, Maddison, Vardy (-4)

                                            1) Do it. Do it now!
                                            2) Hold out until IB games are done/reassess

Depends on your view of the Maddison vs Tielemans argument

That is the decisive factor. If he certainly wants Maddison over Tielemans then naturally 1.

                                              Hi all 2FT 0.2 ITB.
                                              Heaton*
                                              Robertson, Soyuncu, Lundstram, Tomori
                                              Salah, Sterling, KDB, Mount
                                              Vardy, Abraham
                                              Tomori, Connolly, Cantwell

Thinking Sterling and Connolly to Maddison/Martial and Jimenez. Could do KDB to Tielemans and afford that too but had KDB since GW1 so couldn’t get back easy.

                                              Thoughts appreciated

Thanks both. Seems keeping KDB is the thing to do. Can see rotation for Sterling increasing but expect goals in the next few so tough decision. Martial always tempts me but has let me down on many occasions. Lucky I have time to consider this over the break. Heaton injury annoying too but hopefully he is fit, if not I’m tempted to play with 10 and get Henderson GW14.

Looks to me like you are planning for GW18 and beyond, and that your GW18 team will just be a regular eleven with 3 Liverpool on the bench. In that case it isnt too late to be getting Robertson, because you ll be keeping beyond GW18.
Seems that you have the strategy worked out, so go for it.

Is there a need to have 2 keepers? do they cover each others weak fixtures?
is there a better 5th mid than hayden available?

Prefer 2 and I think it's what I'll be getting, but 1 is great too and leaves cash left over to strengthen the squad. No clear cut answer really
