The Ziyech injury latest and Mount’s joy from set plays: FPL notes on Chelsea v Leeds

Chelsea 3-1 Leeds United

  • Goals: Olivier Giroud (£6.7m), Kurt Zouma (£5.6m), Christian Pulisic (£8.2m) | Patrick Bamford (£6.1m)
  • Assists: Reece James (£5.2m), Mason Mount (£6.8m), Timo Werner (£9.5m) | Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m)
  • Bonus: Mount x3, Bamford, Phillips x2

Chelsea came from behind to see off Leeds with a performance of pace and verve played out in front of 2,000 loud and happy fans.

Patrick Bamford‘s (£6.1m) eighth goal of the season, seven of which have come on the road, gave the visitors an early lead.

But once Olivier Giroud (£6.7m) had equalised, the hosts took control, dominated the second half and ended up out-shooting their opponents 23 to eight.

BLOOMER ZOUMA

The Bamford goal, from an exquisite Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) through-ball, scuppered Chelsea’s chances of a third straight clean sheet.

It also meant a mixed night for those with a Blues defender in their Fantasy Premier League (FPL) line-up.

Top of that particular shop is Ben Chilwell (£6.2m and 36%), who treated all those owners to a first blank since Gameweek 5 and only his second in eight games as a Chelsea player.

Leeds’ wingers, and in particular the industrious Raphinha (£5.4m), kept both Chelsea full-backs relatively quiet on the night, although Reece James (£5.2m) did provide the cross for Giroud’s leveller – one of two big chances he created.

Stopping the aerial threat of Kurt Zouma (£5.6m) is not so easy, however, and he powered home a header, from a Mason Mount (£6.8m) corner, to put the home side in the lead after the break.

It was the centre-half’s fourth goal of the season – double the total of any other defender – and confirmed once again the Blues’ prowess from dead ball situations.

Frank Lampard’s side has now scored seven goals from corners this campaign, which is four more than any other team.

MIDFIELD RICHES

That set-piece threat should increase the Fantasy allure of Mount, who took eight corners against Leeds, six of which were successful.

The England international has actually delivered more corners than any other Premier League player over the last six Gameweeks.

But his 4.6% ownership figure means managers are clearly not buying him into thus far, even though a goal and four assists this season have helped him to more points (43) than anyone else in Chelsea’s vaunted midfield.

Maybe familiarity has bred contempt, but the fact that the 16.5%-owned Hakim Ziyech (£8.3m) lasted just 29 minutes on Saturday might boost Mount’s popularity should Fantasy bosses want a straight swap.

Lampard gave an immediate verdict on Ziyech’s injury post-match:

It is a hamstring injury which we will find out the severity of in the next couple of days. It is obviously a disappointment going into this busy period.

Regardless of the upcoming Christmas madness, rushing anyone back from a hamstring problem is decidedly ill-advised.

Not that Lampard is lacking options in midfield anyway.

Christian Pulisic (£8.2m) came off the bench for his first extended run-out in the league since Gameweek 6 and he was his usual fast, direct and threatening self, which bodes well for his 1.8% ownership.

Lampard was certainly happy with his sub’s impact:

I was really pleased for Christian today because it has been a difficult period with the injury for him. For him to play the period of the game he played with the intensity of the game, and to get his goal, because he has the incredible gift of arriving in the box centrally as a wide man, I was delighted and he is only going to get stronger.

TIMO TIME OR WERNER WORRIES

The American’s introduction had an impact on Timo Werner (£9.5m) – and not all of it positive.

The striker, who had been interchanging with Giroud in a central role, was shunted out to the right flank by Pulisic’s introduction, although it didn’t stop him from having a busy night.

He set up the substitute’s late clincher and worked the excellent Leeds keeper Illan Meslier (£4.6m) on a number of occasions, most notably when contriving to fluff a chance from a yard out following a Giroud header.

On another day, Werner could have brought in a huge haul for his 23.4% ownership, which is a familiar refrain so far this season.

He’s produced just one double-digit performance so far (a 16-pointer in Gameweek 5) and that has tried the patience of many managers.

But only five forwards have more than his 55 points in FPL and he leads the way among strikers for penalty area touches (62).

Chelsea’s schedule is not the easiest – they’ll travel to Everton and Wolves next and will face Arsenal and Manchester City before the FA Cup third round.

That might not encourage much new investment in their key assets, although selling on the likes of Werner looks risky.

LIMP LEEDS

Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa was blunt about his team’s loss:

The result was fair and the difference was fair. Although we didn’t create many chances, the difficulty in the game was not neutralising them when they were playing out from the back.

Chelsea must take much of the credit for keeping the visitors quiet – Leeds averaged 15 attempts a match prior to Saturday, but were kept to just over half of that total at Stamford Bridge.

That didn’t stop Bamford scoring yet again, and he remains the team’s most popular FPL asset, at 35.2%, by a huge margin.

Leeds came into the game looking for a third straight clean sheet, but an early knee injury to Robin Koch (£4.5m) proved disruptive.

However, Bielsa’s decision to play full-back Stuart Dallas (£4.6m) in midfield could tempt investment ahead of a generally good set of fixtures. If the coach continues to use him in that role, that is.

West Ham and Newcastle at home are next for Leeds, while their two toughest games before the FA Cup – Manchester United and Spurs – will both be away, which should keep Bamford owners happy for now.

Chelsea XI (4-2-3-1): Mendy; Chilwell, T Silva, Zouma, R James; Mount, Kanté, Havertz (Kovacic 67); Werner, Giroud (Abraham 79), Ziyech (Pulisic 30).

Leeds United XI (4-1-4-1): Meslier; Alioski (Rodrigo 69), Cooper, Koch (Llorente 9), Ayling; Phillips; Harrison (Poveda 57), Dallas, Klich, Raphinha; Bamford.

I will from gw13 - no Bruno atm.

      Martinez Foster
      Chilwell Zouma Konsa KWP Mitchell
      KDB Salah Grealish Jota Maddison
      Kane DCL Brewster

Looking at DCL to Bamford this week leaves me 0.1m spare (which I'll prob need) for Maddison to Bruno next.

Loathed to lose DCL who I've had from the start but think it's worth it?

        Same boat.

Thing is I'd rather lose DCL than Kane.. but then DCL is returning every week for a 7.0 (what I bought) - you can't go wrong!

      Yes, from next week -

      Martinez
      James, Dias, Lamptey (coufal)

De Bruyne, Fernandes, salah, grealish, Soucek

      Kane, Bamford (Brewster)

Risky going without DCL and jota but I like the team for now

I still think they're a bit away from top form but they look closer to hitting it now lately than they have since the season started IMO. I can never realty call this game over the last few seasons though and haven't a clue what to expect. I got KDB in 1 or even 2 weeks earlier than expected due to Ziyech's injury and so goals galore would suit me

Is there any obvious reason why Bamford seems to get most of his goals away (so far)?

Is it a coincidence, due to relatively difficult home fixtures or a tactical thing?

Almost identical xG home vs away.

But he's taking more shots away from home and is more involved too. Not sure if that's opponent dependent. I think they have had tougher home matches though.

Home - FUL, MCY, WOL, LEI, ARS
Away - LIV, SHU, AVL, CPL, EVE, CHE

I'd definitely say in terms of attacking, it's been harder at home against those guys. Against Fulham at home they scored 4...

Probably although losing a polayer who's just had a rest so is now likely to play always suprises me. As above it's expected with Jota but at that price worth it and he's scored OK even as sub.

    2 questions / thoughts

Is Vardy to Ings in 2 weeks a good idea? I think Brighton and Everton won't change and will give Leicester chances but after that they have Spurs MU Palace Newcastle Chelsea, and apart from MU I can't see the rest of those teams giving Leicester much change and that's when they struggle

Other question is for someone that doesn't have a Spurs defender and is looking at getting one in, what's the best call? Reguilon seems like the obvious choice and he's looked excellent from the games I've seen him in but he looks a lot more defensive now than when he first started playing (naturally given how Spurs have developed), so is it worth the extra cash or is Dier a better option being cheaper and sometimes on FKs? I'm not looking at this immediately but definitely within 2-3 weeks

Ings is back from injury, minutes may be managed, and he needs to get fitness/sharpness back. Not worth it until he is proven to be fully recovered.

Spurs fix to pick up post Xmas, I like Reguilon personally.

Thanks, I suppose if I'm keeping Vardy minimum for the next 2 weeks that should give me time to see what shape Ings is in, if I end up making that move I can probably afford Reguilon at some point too

Stay clear of Chelsea mids for the time being I reckon. Lots of better options out there.

Its like a Pulisic love story, bit of a tragedy at the moment.. but will it end happily ever after??

I rate Pulisic really highly, he can be an amazing value player for only 8.2m.. If he's fit and playing week in week out with no injury issues then he's better value than Ziyech because of the goal threat. However thats the big problem, and I'd probably steer clear still because he's only just coming back, will get benchings with 3 day gws.. and during the cold winter period he's more likely to tweak a muscle injury again. Keep an eye on him, hes not going to be rising - nobody really looking at him yet

      I did exactly the same!

I want to reserve that 8-8.5m slot in my team for a Chelsea mid but I can’t seem to land on the right one at the right time.

I think I am going to do Ziyech > Jota this week and use the spare cash to upgrade Kilman to Dias the week after.

Jota will be benched from time to time but I’m content with that and my bench is strong enough.

      Good luck with your choice!

    Martinez
    Chilwell, Cresswell, KWP
    Grealish, KDB, Son, Jota
    Kane, Vardy, DCL

    (Steer, Lamptey, Mitchell, Stephens)
    2 FT, 0.5 ITB

Thoughts on Grealish, Kane > Salah, Bamford this week to facilitate Jota, Vardy > Bruno, Watkins later on?

Alternatively can look to downgrade one of Bamford or Watkins to make room for TAA or Robbo.

Think Salah is a more explosive option than Vardy for this week. Vardy home form iffy.. He scored but Leicester dont create enough chances. Im considering dropping him before Brighton.. He does have a decent record against though hmm

I think Kane/Son are essential right now!
With Liverpool, they have more goal scorers and harder to pick who will each week. Spurs is easier- Kane or Son!

Why is it not worth it? if its a straight swap, ie 2FT, then Liverpool do have the better fixtures coming up so could work out. Could all depend on the other moves you make, who are you downgrading Kane to and upgrading Salah from?

        1. Captain_Shirokov

Kane for Salah? Personally don't see Kane as being as explosive as Salah. A Salah hatrick could get you ~21pts, a Kane hatrick would get 17pts. Goals for midfielders are worth more therefore I rate Salah above Kane.

Kane has been involved in 78% of Spurs goals this season when on the field (and an underappreciated element of him is he seems the most nailed of the premiums to start and play 90 every GW)

        FPL goal involvement for others:
        Bruno is 63%
        Son 59%
        KDB 53%
        Salah 52%

So to me dropping Kane means you have to believe that Spurs are going to not score many goals...

Good point - but a counter point to that is that Spurs arguably don't score as many as City or LIverpool will. Mourinho mindset when 2-0 up is to shut up shop. City and liverpool will get 4/5-0. I don't see the early spurs form when they blew teams away continuing because Mourinho is on top now, has a lead in the table to defend, different story before.

So KDB and Salah, despite lower overall involvement, will probably have more goals involvement due to the higher goals scored for their teams, in my opinion. Kane still a great option and if you have no point swapping

My other option would be Ziyech, JRod to Salah, Bissouma and then play either 433 or 343 playing the hokey cokey with Soucek and a defender
          Current team:
          McCarthy/ Martinez
          Chilwell/ Dias/ Lamptey/ Konsa/ Dallas
          KDB/ Son/ Ziyech/ Jrod/ Soucek
          Bamford/ Kane/ DCL

Set on doing a -4 this week:

Ziyech > Salah is locked in

Now the Q is do I:

      A) DCL > Adams (exact money)

      B) Vardy > any forward 8.6 and below

....if B, who would people suggest? Have BamBam already

OK, so I drafted a wildcard that has a pretty dreadful defence and third striker option. Is this madness?

      McCarthy / Button
James / Lamptey / Dallas / Mitchell* / Neco Williams*
      Grealish / KDB / Bruno / Son / Salah
      Wilson / Bamford / Brewster

Is this too many eggs in one or two baskets?

Why are people keeping Vardy for the Brighton game? LEI have been poor from an attacking point of view in the last 2GWs. Of course Vardy does not need a lot of chances but I don't see him scoring more than a goal or a captaincy option for this GW.

Interestingly eyeing up the exact same move. But im torn between using Vardy to fund Son for Soucek to give me all the big hitters in midfield.

Do you own Son? Curious as my decision basically comes down to Trent Vs Son. Most will say Son but its not as simple as that, Trent also allows me better bench coverage and their run from 14 looks prime for clean sheets. Son however is hugely owned and any double digit score just ruins me..

I have son but I’m scared of not owning Bruno, Trent allows me 1.2 itb to upgrade my horrendous bench so over the next few weeks Branthwaite can become Dallas and Bissouma can become Soucek..

So to get Trent you're going without Bruno?

This is my dilemma.. I can only get Trent if I forego one of Salah - KDB - Bruno or Son.. Originally I was going to go without Son but he's a major headache

            Bamford Calvert-Lewin

            Bissouma Brewster Branthwaite
            2.9itb

Son to Bruno next week will leave 1.2 itb to improve my bench (dependant on injuries, illness etc)

And to OP, I agree. Im extremely happy for the 5 and 8 points from Vardy but expected a lot more.. He has dissapointed especially in the eye test. Leicester have reminded me of the Arsenal of old, pass pass pass, do nothing. They created 0 chances in the second half until the last minute Vardy goal. Thats what he brings but the emphasis is on Leicester to attack in the home game, and Brighton are underated - can keep the ball well and prevent opportunities.

Vardy does have a good record against Brighton in the past however.. Just not sure he's going to explode though. Probably going to move him on..

Brighton give away too many chances and constantly attack so I think that plays into Leicester's hands as they aren't able to pick open a tight defence. I never expected Vardy to run riot against SU and I'm not sure why people did, they've only lost 2 games this season by more than 1 goal. Brighton have been better defensively of late but I still think the way they attack means they will give clear chances to Leicester, but I do think Vardy needs Barnes beside him in games like this. Same for Everton, they won't change how they play so he'll get chances there
